Welcome Footballers, comedians, politicians, DJs, fashion designers: the Union offers a plethora of opportunities to meet truly incredible people at the forefront of their fields, but it is easy to lose sight of what it has the potential to do, at its core, amidst the influx and variety of events we hold every day. As we enter into a new decade, and as we approach our bicentenary celebration in three years, it is high time to reflect upon the Union’s purpose, the direction in which we are moving, and the place we hold in today’s world. Reminding you of the fact that we have hosted Malcom X in the past sounds tired; hoping that you find something you enjoy here this term has been repeated so often that it has, at least to me, been rendered meaningless. So, to the members, to everyone in Oxford: I encourage you to approach the Union with an open mind this term. Neither the Union, as an institution, nor I, at its head this term, have the ability alone to bestow the inspiration and the power to act onto any of you. Instead, all I can do is urge you to find some agency this term, to take an hour out of your day to attend events with people you may not have heard of, but that represent often-marginalised voices across the world that deserve to be heard. I urge you to engage with, to challenge, and to learn from voices you may not necessarily agree with. I urge you to raise an unexpected question and to discover an unknown, unadvertised cause close to the heart of a celebrity who is never asked about anything outside their own career. Because, the discussions we provide, and the essence of the ideas promoted through them, are only as strong and as impactful as you, the members, make them.

Internally, the Union, too, is approaching its own policies with an open mind - having already updated our accessibility policy, and committed to a review of all our practices, policies, and structures. I encourage members and committee alike to respond to these reforms free of dogma, political motivations, or a desire to cling to roots that we may have to acknowledge are already-eroding. I have no grand illusions about any immediate impact these words will have. But, the reason I wanted to create a term here at the Union was the hope of having a positive impact, and, at the end of the day, that hope still lingers. So, to those that this may have resonated with, I sincerely hope that you will come to our debates, panels, and speaker events this term with a truly open mind and will identify and genuinely listen to the ideas that matter amidst the noise of our many conversations. And beyond that, I hope that you take these voices with you beyond the walls of our old and aged institution, beyond the dreaming spires of Oxford, and into the world to forge your own path and to create your own impact.

Librarian’s Welcome

Treasurer’s Welcome

I still remember my first-ever Union event: Tony Abbott spoke in a packed, buzzing chamber during my freshers’ week. I was amazed that I was listening to a world leader, and that students were empowered to challenge him, as equals. The most surreal part of that experience was seeing Tony Abbott joking around with members, beer in hand, in the bar after the event. And that’s what I’ve come to realize the Union is about: ideas, debates, and unforgettable experiences.

Welcome back to Oxford, the new term, and the new decade!

I’m incredibly proud of the term of events we have put together this Hilary, and look forward to more of those unforgettable moments, from the laughs we’ll share with Conan O’Brien, through the insight we’ll gain from Paul Krugman, and the title-winning goals we’ll remember with Sergio Aguero. And from debating the UN’s role in safeguarding global cooperation, to remembering the Holocaust with survivors 75 years on, I really hope you’ll enjoy and feel empowered by the discussions we’ll be hosting. In addition to putting together these events, I’ll be overseeing the upkeep of our beautiful Library and its book collection. We have weekly meetings of library committee to discuss anything from buying blankets to updating book stocks. If you’re interested in getting involved in the running of the library, please reach out! It’s been the honour of my time at Oxford to serve as Librarian. I hope this term sparks as much laughter, discussion, and debate as it should. Spencer Cohen Brasenose College librarian@oxford-union.org 4

The Treasurer’s Office has worked hard over the vacation to help you liven up the Hilary cold. Our debates this term - from China, to Feminism, to the British Empire - offer plenty of opportunity to make your voice heard. But if the prospect of raising your hand to speak is daunting, then hopefully winning a free three-course meal, cocktail masterclass, or a return trip to London might give you the courage to take part. And while our debates are intellectually rich, we haven’t forgotten about your pockets. You will find on the Treasurer’s Treats page a range of exclusive discounts for Union members at shops, bars, and restaurants throughout Oxford. We have also worked to raise sponsorship from exciting new businesses, enabling us to secure the events outlined throughout these pages. If you’re interested in how we spend your money, you will find a summary of the Union’s accounts at the back of this termcard - I would be delighted to hear from anyone with comments or suggestions. Or, if you want to get involved in the financial life of the Union, there are always spaces open on Finance Committee! It has been a delight to work with such a dedicated committee over Christmas, on putting together such a broad and diverse termcard. I hope you will all find in it something to excite you. HIL AR Y 2020

Secretary’s Welcome Happy New Year and welcome back to Oxford! I hope you all enjoyed the festive period and I hope you’re looking forward to the amazing social events we have lined up for you this term. As the new Secretary, I can assure you a great term of sparkles, glamour and socials galore. You should all be excited for our Hilary Term Ball, ‘The Roaring Twenties’, which will start the decade with a BANG! With acrobats, contortionists, aerialists and live performances, you will undoubtedly have a greater night at the Oxford Union than at Gatsby’s party. Alongside the ball, there will also be some fun and spectacular pub quizzes with great prizes to win, as well as our Retro-themed 5th Week Social. I feel incredibly privileged to be your Secretary this term, and hope to make it as enjoyable as possible. Please feel free to contact me with any queries or concerns at secretary@oxford-union.org.

ART MA RKET PANE L

Money And Art: The Future Of The Art Market Friday 31st January | 8.00 PM One of the highest performing investment industries, art is a multi-billion-dollar business, with greater returns than conventional capital investments, and new records set at auction each year. Yet, with so much money washing around, questions have begun to emerge. Is this sustainable market growth, or a dangerous bubble? Is this extreme commercialisation harming creativity and innovation? What’s more, at a fundamental level, is it acceptable that some of the world’s greatest artworks are held in private collections, locked away to appreciate in value? With art and money increasingly intertwined, what is the future of the art market, and art’s place in our lives?

Speakers Jussi Pylkkanen Finnish art dealer and Global President of Christie’s, the auction house. He is also a governor of the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

Sir Norman Rosenthal

Art historian and notable art curator. He was Exhibitions Secretary at the Royal Academy for 31 years, and is a champion of contemporary art.

The Loneliest Generation: Mental Health In The 21st Century Monday 10th February | 8.00 PM Over the last few years, mental health issues have emerged from the shadows of stigmatisation and shame to become recognised as an epidemic of global importance, with rates of depression, anxiety, and loneliness on the rise, and the WHO estimating that one in four suffer from some form of mental disorder. In light of this, the need for policy solutions has become increasingly urgent, and last year, then-British Prime Minister Theresa May announced the appointment of a ‘Minister of Loneliness’ to help tackle this growing area of concern. What more, then, can be done to address the invisible afflictions of loneliness and despair, and turn the tide on the mental health crisis?

Speakers Jonny Benjamin, MBE

I NCLUSION IN FAS HIO N PANE L

The Value Of Inclusion Wednesday 26th February | 5.00 PM Fashion has a unique role as both a multibillion dollar business, and a creative industry with enormous cultural reach. Despite its importance, however, the world of fashion has often faced criticism for being too exclusionary. For too long, fashion has presented a single, western-centric model of femininity and beauty, and been dominated by a homogeneous, European and North American perspective. In recent years, there have been signs of change, from British Vogue appointing its first black Editor-in-Chief, to trans, plus-sized, and disabled models increasingly appearing on catwalks and brands such as Gucci implementing diversity and inclusion action plans. Despite these changes, however, much remains to be done. In this panel, convened by Marco Bizzzarri, Gucci’s President and CEO, we gather together some of the industry's most influential figures to discuss the importance of inclusion in fashion and beyond.

Speakers Marco Bizzari

President and CEO of Gucci, who also serves on the Executive Committee of Kering, one of the largest luxury groups in the world.

Sinead Burke

Academic, writer, and advocate for inclusive design. One of Vogue UK's 'Forces for Change', last year she became the first little person on the magazine’s cover.

Dapper Dan

American fashion designer from Harlem, New York. His store is most associated with introducing high fashion to the hip hop world.

Hari Nef

American actress, model and writer. She is the first openly transgender person to appear on the cover of a major British magazine. 31

HOLOCAUST MEM O R IAL DAY PANE L

Never Again: Remembering The Shoah Monday 9th March | 8.00 PM The Shoah shocked the conscience of the world, representing evil on an unfathomable scale, and inspiring the international pledge that it would never be forgotten, nor ever be repeated. Holocaust memorials were erected around the world. The horrors of the Shoah were etched into the literature and political thought of the 20th Century. A new international order was established, devoted to global cooperation and peace. Today, 75 years on from the end of WWII, the Shoah feels like part of a distant past, yet continues to stand as a stark warning from history, which we cannot allow ourselves to forget. The personal stories of its living survivors, especially, are a precious resource, powerfully testifying to experience of this unimaginable atrocity, and emphasising our responsibility to remember and understand. This term, we are privileged enough to host some of the Shoah's living survivors.

UYGHURS PANE L

The Uyghur People: Voices Of The Forgotten Wednesday 11th March | 8.00 PM Uyghurs, a largely Muslim ethnic minority in China, have for years suffered at the hands of repressive Chinese policies, due in large part to concerns of a separatist movement in Xinjiang. In recent years, however, the actions of Beijing have escalated, with one million Muslims currently held in internment camps, according to UN estimates. While the international community has condemned China’s detention of Uyghur Muslims as a violation of human rights, however, Beijing maintains its innocence, silencing dissidents, and framing these internment camps as a national security measure, aimed at preventing extremism and separatism. What is the truth for those in Xinjiang, and what can be done to protect the humanity and dignity of the Uyghurs, and the stateless worldwide?

Speakers Dolkun Isa

President of the World Uyghur Congress, and Vice-President of the UNPO. He is a leading advocate for the Uyghurs internationally.

Wuerkaixi

Prominent Chinese dissident of Uyghur dissent. He was a leader in the Tiananmen protests in 1989, and remains active today.

Rahima Mahmut

Uyghur singer and activist. Based in the UK, she has been denied access to her family at home due to her activism.

COMPETITIVE DEBATING Debates aren’t only for Thursday nights. The Union’s competitive debating squad is one of the largest and most successful societies in the world. This year, two Oxford debaters won the World Universities Debating Championships, as well as one speaker claiming the Top Speaker award and multiple teams qualifying for the semifinals. Oxford Debating offers something for every level, from total novices to world champions. For those new to debating, our beginners workshops run every Sunday evening and are open to every member. The workshops consist of a presentation designed to target specific debating skills, and practice debates judged by some of Oxford’s most experienced and successful debaters. If you haven’t debated before, they’re the perfect place to start. For those with a bit more experience, our Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced squads run every week;

Every term, we hold public speaking workshops run by some of our most experienced debaters. These workshops are designed to develop not only members’ debating ability, but a range of transferable skills - from constructing an argument to delivering a speech as effectively as possible.

where our coaches provide a one-on-one development and strengthening programme. But we don’t just practice debating at Oxford; we also fully fund teams of both novices and experienced debaters to compete nationally and internationally. We also host the Oxford IV, the third largest Debating Competition in Europe, as well as organising a schools competition which takes place throughout the country. If you have any further questions, or to sign up for workshops and squads, please contact the Chair of the Debate Selection Committee, Geneva Roy: cdsc@oxford-union.org. To sign up to the mailing list for regular updates, including information on how to apply for tournaments, send a blank email to debate-announce-subscribe@maillist.ox.ac. uk, and take a look at the ‘Oxford Debating’ Facebook Page and ‘Oxford Debaters’ Facebook Group.

Most popular are our women’s workshops, run by and open to all self-identifying female and non-binary members, and our ESL workshops, for those who speak English as a second language. These sessions are designed to be casual and accessible to those with no experience of public speaking or debating, and will be advertised by email and on our ‘Oxford Debating’ Facebook page.

How to stay informed

This term, we are proud to present the new and improved Oxford Union app, available free for Apple devices. The Android version of the app will be updated shortly. With events that sync to your calendar, notifications about newly added speakers, and numerous interactive features - including the ability to submit questions, and ballot for Meet and Greets - the app is the best place to keep up to

date with the Union. Download from the App Store or Play Store now. You can also stay up to date with the Union by signing up to the mailing list, available on our website homepage, www. oxford-union.org, and by liking our Facebook page and turning on notifications.

THE OXFOR D UN I O N

I would be nowhere without my family: this termcard is yours. I could fill the pages of this entire book with people I’d like to thank, and that would just be a start. To literally every person who has supported me in any way, big or small (even if it wasn’t from the start, or until the end!), since I began the Union journey; to all the teams I’ve run with and the committees I’ve been on; to the lovely Union staff; to the HT20 team - especially my officers; to my favourite member of ‘senior management;” to my favourite wall-sharer: you’ve all made this worth it and I’ll always be so grateful. Finally, it is rare that someone has enough of an impact on your life that they change the way you fundamentally think and act - that they change who you are. I am so lucky to have met three such people at Oxford - and thanking you does not come even slightly close to what I want to express. Thank you, genuinely, for making me do this myself; for making me stronger. Thank you for being a stronger support than I deserve; for keeping me sane. And thank you, for always, for home, for the swings, for the wrapping: for making me better. 84
