What a start to the season with all three Men’s teams securing victories last week. Much of this can be attributed to the hard work put in preparing for the new season, Pete Davies and Fin Kelly our respective Men’s and Women’s Head Coaches have worked incredibly hard to help everyone be ready for this new season. Whilst some might say that I am biased, they are the best of the best and have a first-class team working alongside them.

Our Medical Team which is now headed up by Ella Sissons is the envy of most clubs playing in the national leagues, it is particularly pleasing to see Ella moving into this role as a former graduate of our Brookes - Quins Physio programme. Ella will be leading our team of Physios and with the next intake of students due to come on board soon, the players will be well looked after and supported. This year we have enhanced our offer to players and are thrilled to be able to welcome Immy Porter, an MSc graduate from Loughborough University and Sports Psychologist. Immy will provide support to the teams, coaches and individual players and will no doubt help support them to achieve their full potential.

As well as our new stand which we highlighted in our programme last week, the club has also completed its refurbishment of the Referees Changing Rooms. This summer, we were thrilled to be awarded the Max Seymour Shield by the Oxfordshire Referee Society for referee hospitality. Much recognition and thanks must go to Charlotte, our Kitchen and Bar lead who works tirelessly to ensure that every referee who visits the club is well looked after on a match day. At this point, I would like to remind everyone that without the referee, there is no game and so please do show them the respect and support that they deserve. Rugby is a special game that thrives on the values which we all know and respect - so cheer, offer applause and help us maintain the culture which makes our game so very special.

With the Rugby World Cup now underway, there will be plenty of games to watch in the clubhouse. Whichever nation you support, it should be a great tournament which will help us further grow the game by encouraging new people to get involved whether that be as players across all ages, supporters and volunteers. As part of our aim to increase participation, the club continues to deliver its Inspire Schools Programme. With nearly 10 schools locked in for next term, our Head of Community, Tom Varndell will be kept busy supporting this as well as leading the Oxford Brookes Men's rugby programme.

Wherever you are, enjoy all of the rugby this weekend!

And so, the 2023-24 season is erway last weekend with all three teams playing in Midlands, the 2nd XV in Counties 1 (following pro (also following promotion). The 1st XV hosted with a good 38-26 win, the 2nd XV travelled to Br d some of the best teams in Counties 1 last seaso e watched the WhatsApp group awaiting updates and seeing none, feared that the result had not gone our way. Then news filtered through of a 0-36 away win for our 2s, a great start to the season, and clearly a superb defensive effort. At home our 3s faced Tring 2s, a side that had pushed our 2nd XV hard last season. I watched from the touchline as our 3s executed a fine display of attacking rugby and came away with the win 38-26. 3 from 3 and a great start.

On Wednesday the Women's Section hosted the Army's Logistics Corp XV for a preseason friendly, the first of the season. It was a great opportunity to get players game time, to have a look at the new recruits, and to build relationships with the coaches and players from Dalton Barracks, many of whom live in Oxford and have since decided to call Quins their home. We're excited to welcome them to Quins and to see the growth in the women's section under Daisy Hopkins, Fin Kelly, Charlotte Barras and the new S&C team led by Fin Owen Evans.

This weekend our 1st XV travel to Broadstreet, a first league meeting between our 2 clubs. Our 2nd XV face Buckingham 1st XV at home and our 3rd XV travels to Wheatley to play Wheatly 1st XV. The fixtures show how far the club has come: two seasons ago Buckingham 1st XV were a regular fixture for our 1st XV, and Wheatly 1st XV played our 2nd XV last season.

On Sunday our Boys U18 Academy gets underway with a friendly vs Reading Abbey U18s: the growth in our Academy means that we'll be putting out 2 XVs this season, which reflects the great work that the Academy staff have done to grow the program over the past 12 months.

The rugby landscape continues to shift before our eyes: this season has seen the introduction of the new tackle height laws which stipulate that tacklers must tackle below the base of the sternum and ball carriers must not dip into contact. The jury is very much out on the impact of the law changes, they have been introduced under the argument that they will prevent concussions to the ball carrier, it must be said that our experience so far is that the new tackle laws have resulted in a disproportionate number of head injuries being experienced by the tackler. It will be interesting to see what the data that the RFU's CRISP project is collecting will show at the end of the season.

We are excited for another big season ahead in the community department at Oxford Quins, after a successful schools and HAF programme last year, we are looking to reach even more schools, and organise even more multi activity and rugby specific camps for members and the local community.

On top of this we are having a big push for girls rugby and already we have had successful training camps during the Summer where a number of girls who had never played the game came along to Horspath and enjoyed our fantastic club and our great coaches . The Lord Mayor of Oxford also visited and even got involved with a number of the drills and activities.

Also during the summer holiday break, we ran our another HAF camp, which is supported by the Oxfordshire county council. This camp ran for 2 weeks, and we had around 50 children per day attending. Our team of coaches provided the children with multi-sport activities, party games, creative learning, orienteering in Shotover Woods, as well as supplying healthy breakfast, lunch, and snack options daily.

The HAF camps we provide are essential for our community as they provide parents with the support that is needed during the holiday period, providing children with an opportunity to get involved in new activities and a new environment, grow their confidence and also meet new people.

It has been great to see some of these children have now become members at Oxford Quins and are gearing up for their first season of rugby. The Community Programme is a huge part of our club as we pride ourselves on being able to grow the game of rugby across the county and create an environment where people can enjoy the game, make new friends and become part of the Quins family.

Rugby is a game for all and Oxford Quins wants to open our doors to everyone who wants to come along and get involved.
