What a weekend we have ahead of us with fixtures against Stoke, Gosford, Wallingford, Chinor, Witney, Henley, Old Pats, Newbury and Old Northamptonians all scheduled to take place. By my calculations there will be somewhere in the region of 450 Oxford Quins players taking to the field and with somewhere in the region of 900 meals due to be served from the Quins kitchen, the clubhouse will at times feel like it is bursting at the seams!

To kick things off on Saturday we hold our first Sponsors and Supporters Lunch.

With 90 people joining us, we are thrilled to welcome our friends from Howdens, Penny & Sinclair, Shaw Gibbs, Biba Landscapes, OXIL, Sweetcroft Homes, Freeths, Vanguard and the Dragon School. The support which all our sponsors provide, helps make all that we do both at the club and across the wider community possible men's, women's, mini & junior rugby, a flourishing schools programme and community camps plus so much more.

You will have no doubt noticed that during the summer months, the latest edition to the ground - our first stand was installed. This was only made possible due to the generous support from Penny & Sinclair and I am thrilled that they will help us officially open the stand on Saturday afternoon. This major addition forms part of the club's ambitious plan to be the leading amateur community rugby club in the country. Although we may not pay our players, we strive to make everything else as professional as it can be.

Whilst we may have record numbers of people playing at the club, we are not standing still. Our Head of Community, Tom Varndell, continues to drive our community programme, working across over 10 local schools and also offering activity and food camps during the school holidays. None of this would be possible without the support of Shaw Gibbs and their sponsorship of our Community Programme. The local community is key to the success of the club, and we continue to actively recruit across all sections. So as to make sure that the club and game is as accessible as possible, we have established the Oxford Quins Youth Rugby Sponsorship Fund. Supported by the Dragon School, the fund helps us break down some of the financial barriers which may exist, providing help where it is needed whether this be providing free kit or membership.

I finish with a special thank you to all of the volunteers who make it all possible!

There are too many to name but a special thank you to those of you who will take to a pitch this weekend to referee a game, as without you, there would be no game.

​Half-Term Rugby Camp Success!

The Oxford Quins Community Programme organised a three-day half-term rugby camp, which was attended by boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 14. It offered opportunities for skill development and fostering an appreciation for the sport. The camp was highly successful, with a strong focus on key areas such as evasion, handling, and tackling.

1. Skill Development The camp provided a structured environment for participants to work on their rugby skills.

Coaches and instructors dedicated time to teaching evasion techniques, improving ball handling, and enhancing tackling abilities. These essential skills form the foundation of rugby, and the camp was instrumental in helping the children hone their abilities.

2. Game-Based Learning: Beyond skill development, the camp emphasized the practical application of these skills in game-based situations. Children had the opportunity to put what they had learned into action, which not only reinforced their understanding of the sport but also made the learning process fun and engaging.

3. Community Involvement It was inspiring to see a significant number of children coming to the camp not just from our current members, but also children from outside of the club and actively participating. The strong turnout demonstrated a growing interest in rugby within the local community. The camp not only provided an avenue for skill development but also created a sense of camaraderie among the young participants.

Looking ahead to the new school term, the Oxford Quins Community Programme is excited to build on the momentum generated by the successful Rugby World Cup which really was able to give the rugby community a positive lift, as well as the success the Oxford Quins senior teams are having on the field at the start of this season.

The Oxford Quins Community program aims to further nurture children's interest in rugby by introducing various activities and initiatives designed to create enthusiasm for the sport.

These include rugby clinics at more schools in the area, community engagement, and increasing the amount of schools currently on our partnerships program.

The Oxford Quins Community Programme remains committed to its mission of developing rugby talent and fostering a sense of community among the youth in the local area. Building on the excitement generated by the Rugby World Cup, the program looks forward to inspiring a new generation of rugby enthusiasts during the current school term.

My mission this year is to get as many women and girls in the game as possible. Once they are here, I want to ensure that they stay, and continue to love the sport as much as possible. Being able to oversee both of these teams within the partnership allows for management of load, skill development, tactical knowledge enhancement, and opportunities across the partnership.

I have an amazing team around me that are going to help bring as much opportunity and experience for this learning. The success of this squad will be down to the hard work behind the scenes by these coaches, and the passion and desire contributed by the players week in, week out.

It’s a privilege to be heading up the Oxford Brookes / Quins Partnership this year. I am a huge advocate for women’s rugby, and to be coaching both an NC1 Women’s Club Team and a Tier 1 University Women’s Team is amazing to me.

The Quins Women’s team have come along way over the last 2 seasons and that is a huge testament to the hard work of Pat Metcalfe-Jones. We still have a long way to travel together, but over the last 2 league games we have shown incredible passion, togetherness and the ability to play rugby at a high level. The results haven’t been able to show those outside of the club truly what we are capable of, and the talent and ability that we have on show. However, I have massive faith in all of our players to continue on the path that we are travelling. Their time will come, and they truly deserve this.

I am hoping that with the development and growth of the Brookes / Quins Women’s Programme we can start impacting the Girl’s Section at the club and those at local schools who want to play rugby. With a team at the top of the club, I truly believe that these young girls will soon discover role models and aspire to be like them. This is what we need, and I think our players realise this. It’s not just about the immediate senior women’s team. This programme is about the growth of women’s and girls rugby. If we can start getting people down to watch our games, they will very quickly realise what we are capable of, and what we bring to the club and it’s partnership.

I can’t wait to see where we are at, at the end of the season. It’s a very exciting time, and to see how we will progress will be a pleasure.
