After a hard fought win away to Derby RFC last week, the Quins First XV are in action at home this Saturday with Bridgnorth RFC visiting. With only three home games of the season remaining, the players and coaching team are more focused than ever and continue to play with the grit and determination that is needed to compete in this hugely competitive league. With Bridgnorth RFC defeating Stourbridge RFC at home last week, this fixture will be as tough as they come and we can expect some quality rugby to be served up.

Our Second XV are away this Saturday and travel to take on a Rams Third XV. The side suffered a narrow defeat last Saturday against Windsor RFC, and as we reflect on how the club has developed over recent years, we should not lose sight of the fact that it was only a couple of years ago that this fixture was being played between both clubs First XV. Competing at level 7 means that those of you who do not or are unable to travel to watch a First XV fixture away from home are still able to come to the club and watch attractive, running rugby at a very competitive level.

Our Third XV are also at home this Saturday and look forward to welcoming our friends from Didcot RFC. After successive promotions, the Third XV are also playing at the highest level ever and regularly competing against local First XV sides. After a fantastic away win last week against a Chipping Norton RFC First XV, the “Mighty 3’s” are getting stronger by the week, with just one point separating four teams at the bottom of the table and six game to go, they take to the field looking to secure their place in this league next season.

Our Women’s section have a rest weekend as their opposition in the Papa Johns Cup have given the First XV a bye into the next round of the cup. This means that the side are just one win away from the final. As yet the opposition have not been confirmed but please do put Sunday 24 March in your diary as we look to cheer them on to the final! As yet, the venue for the final has not been confirmed but I am sure that like me you will be crossing your fingers for Twickenham! Last Sunday, our Women’s Second XV hosted Tewkesbury First XV – watched by a large crowd, they treated their friends, families and supporters to a great game of rugby and better still a win! I know that the coaching team and wider squad were incredibly proud of the players as they took to the field for their second fixture this season.

With some key fixtures still to come this season, we still have a few spaces available for our Reunion Lunch on Saturday 3 March, with Kenilworth RFC and Oxford RFC visiting, there will be two great games of rugby for people to watch. Whether you played for the Old Boys, the Maras or Quins – everyone is welcome! Last year when we hosted this for the first time, it was a complete sell out! It only seems like yesterday that the merger of the Oxford Old Boys and Oxford Marathons was being finalised. In February 1996 both teams were playing at level 8, the formation of Oxford Quins was fundamentally about creating a new club within the city that could compete at a much higher level and ultimately become the number one club in the city. The First XV currently sit at the top of Regional 1 Midlands, a position which it has never been before, on the cusp of bringing level 4 national league rugby to the city for the first time in our relatively short history. With six games remaining, the season is far from over but the desire and passion which the squad are showing makes it hard not to believe that this current group of players can do what no team at the club has done before.

Second half the season is well underway for the Quins Women.

Leading the Women’s section as Head Coach is a great privilege. The section would not be where it is now, or even exist without the hard work and passion of Pat Metcalfe-Jones who was the Head Coach until the end of last season. I was honoured to take over leading into this season. The 2023/24 season has been a good one so far. The women’s section is still young in its existence, but it is building incredibly fast. This is year one for me. I have changed some things in how we operate, and I have introduced several new aspects to the team both technically and tactically. It was always going to be a tough start to the season. But I can’t fault the faith and the passion of all of our players.

Being part of the Oxford Harlequins team is an incredible opportunity. The club is growing significantly, and it is very exciting. The men’s section is performing outstandingly.

Since our close fixture at home against Wasps FC in the Papa Johns Cup, we have been on the climb.

The growth in our last couple of fixtures has been great to see. There’s been a clear shift in intensity at training which has given us the edge in competitive fixtures. We’re working very hard at the minute to be able to replicate the competitive nature of fixtures to best prepare us for Sundays.

We talk a lot about belief, family and professionalism within our squad and the team. This squad and the culture of the team is by far one of the best that I have been involved in. From a coaching staff perspective, we are very lucky. Charlotte Barras (Beanie) who is currently undertaking her Advanced Coaching Award (Level 3) brings a wealth of personal playing experience. I learn a lot from Beanie each week, and I know the players do too. We are extremely lucky to have a Women’s Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Fin Owen-Evans has brought another level to our physical preparation and robustness. With his expertise, we can ensure a consistent squad for our fixtures and bring the appropriate load to training sessions. Our Head of Women’s Rugby, and player, Daisy Hopkins makes everything happen. Without her work behind the scenes, and the support of the coaching team we wouldn’t be able to operate as highly as we do. The growth of the squad since August last year has been down to the strong coaching team and dedicated playing base.

We currently sit in 5th place in the league. We do have quite a way to go until we can start catching up with 3rd and 4th. However, it is something that the team wants to work towards. Our goal for the second half of the season is to chase those teams ahead of us. We have no pressure and realistically nothing to lose by leaving it all out there on the field after each fixture. The shift in mentality since the first fixture has been huge. Our club psychologist Immy Porter has supported me to help the players get to this point. Not many clubs have access to someone like Immy, let alone in our league.

On 4th February we travel away to Wymondham Rugby Cub to compete in the quarterfinals of the Papa Johns PLate. I have full faith in the squad that we can go all the way in the competition. Being able to play in a final in such a competition would be huge for the players, for the club and the growth of the women’s and girls’ game in Oxfordshire. Our game this weekend against Old Leamingtonians is a great opportunity for us to put our focus into practice and work towards both chasing the top of the league and being as prepared as possible for the plate game in February.

We are still building, and we still have far to go. But we’re in an exciting venture and I can’t wait to see where we get to over the next couple of years.

The Oxford Quins community programme has been making remarkable strides in recent months, particularly with the success of their rugby camps aimed at fostering skill development and a love for the game among young participants. The upcoming rugby camp, scheduled for February 12-13th, is set to be a highlight during the next half-term holiday period. Taking place from 9 am - 3:30 pm on both days, this two-day camp promises an engaging and instructive experience for children involved.

Previous rugby camps organised by Oxford Quins have received overwhelming positive feedback, with children thoroughly enjoying themselves while simultaneously enhancing their game understanding and skills. The success of these camps has been a testament to the club's commitment to providing a fun and educational environment for young rugby enthusiasts.

In addition to the camps, the club's schools programme has been a key driver in expanding the Oxford Quins Mini and Junior sections. The programme's continued success is evident in the growing number of children joining, showcasing the positive impact the club has on the local community and its youth.

A recent recruitment day held a few weeks ago further solidified the club's outreach efforts, drawing in more than 20 new children who eagerly joined the club. Oxford Quins is keen to continue offering recruitment days as a means for prospective members to experience firsthand what the club has to offer. These special days allow newcomers to witness the club's inclusive and nurturing environment, encouraging them to become part of the thriving Oxford Quins community.

As the club moves forward, they remain dedicated to providing opportunities for young athletes to engage with rugby, fostering not only a love for the game but also personal development and camaraderie within the community. The upcoming rugby camps and ongoing initiatives underline Oxford Quins' commitment to nurturing the next generation of rugby players and reinforcing the club's status as a welcoming and vibrant community hub
