After a very successful Sponsors and Supporter lunch at the club two weeks ago, we are thrilled to be holding our annual club day this Saturday at Horspath Road. The emphasis is on members coming together from across the club with an open invitation to all the community to also come down and enjoy what our great game has to offer. As always, there is no charge to come and watch a game of rugby at Oxford Quins and we also look forward to welcoming our opposition players, their committees and supporters.

We are equally thrilled to be hosting the Dragon School on the day who as a club sponsor not only support our Mini Festival but also this event. There will be fun and games from 2:00pm and a guard of honour made up of both Quins and Dragon as the players take to the pitch. As ever the clubhouse and bar will be open and we will also have hot food and cakes available on the side lines!

Following a hard fought win against Kenilworth RFC last week, the Men’s First XV take on Banbury RFC, kick off is 3:00pm and with Quins top of the table and Banbury in third, we will no doubt be treated to a cracking game of rugby.

Our Men’s Second XV travel to Bicester where they will be looking to bounce back following a tough game against Beaconsfield RFC last Saturday. Our Men’s Third XV are also at home this weekend, taking on Chesham RFC First XV and will be kicking of at 2:15pm. Following two successive promotions, the team are now placed in a league where 70% of the opposition are First XV teams, taking on some sides who not too long ago were playing against the Quins First XV. On Sunday, our Women’s First XV travel to Coventry Welsh RFC. Following their emphatic win against Chinnor RFC, the team will be looking to build on this and travel with a strong squad for the game.

As ever, the matches that will be played this weekend are only possible due to the volunteers who take to the pitch to officiate the games. As a club, we have worked to ensure that the welcome they receive and facilities we provide, reflect their support and offer to the game. Please do join me in thanking them before or after the game

My mission this year is to get as many women and girls in the game as possible. Once they are here, I want to ensure that they stay, and continue to love the sport as much as possible. Being able to oversee both of these teams within the partnership allows for management of load, skill development, tactical knowledge enhancement, and opportunities across the partnership.

I have an amazing team around me that are going to help bring as much opportunity and experience for this learning. The success of this squad will be down to the hard work behind the scenes by these coaches, and the passion and desire contributed by the players week in, week out.

It’s a privilege to be heading up the Oxford Brookes / Quins Partnership this year. I am a huge advocate for women’s rugby, and to be coaching both an NC1 Women’s Club Team and a Tier 1 University Women’s Team is amazing to me.

The Quins Women’s team have come along way over the last 2 seasons and that is a huge testament to the hard work of Pat Metcalfe-Jones. We still have a long way to travel together, but over the last 2 league games we have shown incredible passion, togetherness and the ability to play rugby at a high level. The results haven’t been able to show those outside of the club truly what we are capable of, and the talent and ability that we have on show. However, I have massive faith in all of our players to continue on the path that we are travelling. Their time will come, and they truly deserve this.

I am hoping that with the development and growth of the Brookes / Quins Women’s Programme we can start impacting the Girl’s Section at the club and those at local schools who want to play rugby. With a team at the top of the club, I truly believe that these young girls will soon discover role models and aspire to be like them. This is what we need, and I think our players realise this. It’s not just about the immediate senior women’s team. This programme is about the growth of women’s and girls rugby. If we can start getting people down to watch our games, they will very quickly realise what we are capable of, and what we bring to the club and it’s partnership.

I can’t wait to see where we are at, at the end of the season. It’s a very exciting time, and to see how we will progress will be a pleasure.

​Half-Term Rugby Camp Success!

The Oxford Quins Community Programme organised a three-day half-term rugby camp, which was attended by boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 14. It offered opportunities for skill development and fostering an appreciation for the sport. The camp was highly successful, with a strong focus on key areas such as evasion, handling, and tackling.

1. Skill Development The camp provided a structured environment for participants to work on their rugby skills.

Coaches and instructors dedicated time to teaching evasion techniques, improving ball handling, and enhancing tackling abilities. These essential skills form the foundation of rugby, and the camp was instrumental in helping the children hone their abilities.

2. Game-Based Learning: Beyond skill development, the camp emphasized the practical application of these skills in game-based situations. Children had the opportunity to put what they had learned into action, which not only reinforced their understanding of the sport but also made the learning process fun and engaging.

3. Community Involvement It was inspiring to see a significant number of children coming to the camp not just from our current members, but also children from outside of the club and actively participating. The strong turnout demonstrated a growing interest in rugby within the local community. The camp not only provided an avenue for skill development but also created a sense of camaraderie among the young participants.

Looking ahead to the new school term, the Oxford Quins Community Programme is excited to build on the momentum generated by the successful Rugby World Cup which really was able to give the rugby community a positive lift, as well as the success the Oxford Quins senior teams are having on the field at the start of this season.

The Oxford Quins Community program aims to further nurture children's interest in rugby by introducing various activities and initiatives designed to create enthusiasm for the sport.

These include rugby clinics at more schools in the area, community engagement, and increasing the amount of schools currently on our partnerships program.

The Oxford Quins Community Programme remains committed to its mission of developing rugby talent and fostering a sense of community among the youth in the local area. Building on the excitement generated by the Rugby World Cup, the program looks forward to inspiring a new generation of rugby enthusiasts during the current school term.
