What a day! We are thrilled to announce that our sponsors and supporters lunch was a resounding success and we saw the offical opening of the Penny sinclair stand , thank you to james penny for cutting the ribbon. We helped to raise £750 for the Youth Sponsorship Fund. This helps to make rugby available to all, removing the barrier of cost to those who might not otherwise be able to afford it. This means 5 young people can be funded for an entire year to enjoy rugby. Thank you to everyone who attended and to the squads providing the entertainment in the day .

Remembrance Sunday is upon us, a weekend when across all sport, from community to elite, we pause to remember the fallen, and those who sacrificed their present for our future.

Remembrance Sunday

My grandfather fought in the Great War, my uncle in the 2nd, my father served in the Navy during the crises that followed. The Great War was the “war to end all wars”. We look East and we see an interminable conflict, unimaginable suffering, things that most of us can only imagine. Events in Gaza and Israel are giving us an insight into the worst atrocities that man is capable of, the fallen there are women, children, babies.

What has this to do with rugby? For me it serves as a reminder to look outward, to gain perspective, our highs are not so high, are lows not so deep. We are indescribably fortunate to live the lives we live, pursuing our passions, surrounded by friends, in every sense squeezing every ounce out of our existence. But there are battles being fought here.

This month is also Movember: a focus on men’s health. It started by raising awareness of men’s physical health but resonates now as a time to talk out about the things we as men find it hardest to do: to be open. To make ourselves vulnerable by expressing what we have been raised to perceive as weakness. A rugby club is a small corner of the world, one that we can make our own, where we define the culture and the values, what is and isn’t acceptable. And here, at Quins, we choose for this to be a place where men and women can speak out without fear of censure or ridicule, a place where we will tolerate everything but intolerance. A part of the world which we strive to make better, by denying the stigma and toxicity of the world around us.

So as we go out on to the park this week, we know some are fighting their own wars within, others have no such worries and simply relish the struggle on the pitch. Wherever you are right now, amidst the reflection, I hope that this weekend brings you a sense of comfort, reassurance and pride that you are part of something that is simultaneously just rugby, and also so much more

​Half-Term Rugby Camp Success!

The Oxford Quins Community Programme organised a three-day half-term rugby camp, which was attended by boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 14. It offered opportunities for skill development and fostering an appreciation for the sport. The camp was highly successful, with a strong focus on key areas such as evasion, handling, and tackling.

1. Skill Development The camp provided a structured environment for participants to work on their rugby skills.

Coaches and instructors dedicated time to teaching evasion techniques, improving ball handling, and enhancing tackling abilities. These essential skills form the foundation of rugby, and the camp was instrumental in helping the children hone their abilities.

2. Game-Based Learning: Beyond skill development, the camp emphasized the practical application of these skills in game-based situations. Children had the opportunity to put what they had learned into action, which not only reinforced their understanding of the sport but also made the learning process fun and engaging.

3. Community Involvement It was inspiring to see a significant number of children coming to the camp not just from our current members, but also children from outside of the club and actively participating. The strong turnout demonstrated a growing interest in rugby within the local community. The camp not only provided an avenue for skill development but also created a sense of camaraderie among the young participants.

Looking ahead to the new school term, the Oxford Quins Community Programme is excited to build on the momentum generated by the successful Rugby World Cup which really was able to give the rugby community a positive lift, as well as the success the Oxford Quins senior teams are having on the field at the start of this season.

The Oxford Quins Community program aims to further nurture children's interest in rugby by introducing various activities and initiatives designed to create enthusiasm for the sport.

These include rugby clinics at more schools in the area, community engagement, and increasing the amount of schools currently on our partnerships program.

The Oxford Quins Community Programme remains committed to its mission of developing rugby talent and fostering a sense of community among the youth in the local area. Building on the excitement generated by the Rugby World Cup, the program looks forward to inspiring a new generation of rugby enthusiasts during the current school term.

My mission this year is to get as many women and girls in the game as possible. Once they are here, I want to ensure that they stay, and continue to love the sport as much as possible. Being able to oversee both of these teams within the partnership allows for management of load, skill development, tactical knowledge enhancement, and opportunities across the partnership.

I have an amazing team around me that are going to help bring as much opportunity and experience for this learning. The success of this squad will be down to the hard work behind the scenes by these coaches, and the passion and desire contributed by the players week in, week out.

It’s a privilege to be heading up the Oxford Brookes / Quins Partnership this year. I am a huge advocate for women’s rugby, and to be coaching both an NC1 Women’s Club Team and a Tier 1 University Women’s Team is amazing to me.

The Quins Women’s team have come along way over the last 2 seasons and that is a huge testament to the hard work of Pat Metcalfe-Jones. We still have a long way to travel together, but over the last 2 league games we have shown incredible passion, togetherness and the ability to play rugby at a high level. The results haven’t been able to show those outside of the club truly what we are capable of, and the talent and ability that we have on show. However, I have massive faith in all of our players to continue on the path that we are travelling. Their time will come, and they truly deserve this.

I am hoping that with the development and growth of the Brookes / Quins Women’s Programme we can start impacting the Girl’s Section at the club and those at local schools who want to play rugby. With a team at the top of the club, I truly believe that these young girls will soon discover role models and aspire to be like them. This is what we need, and I think our players realise this. It’s not just about the immediate senior women’s team. This programme is about the growth of women’s and girls rugby. If we can start getting people down to watch our games, they will very quickly realise what we are capable of, and what we bring to the club and it’s partnership.

I can’t wait to see where we are at, at the end of the season. It’s a very exciting time, and to see how we will progress will be a pleasure.
