It’s been an exciting couple of weeks at Oxford Quins. It started on 21st January as Oxford Quins Women hosted Old Leamingtonians who came to us on a fine run of form having beaten all of the top 4 teams in the league and, it’s fair to say, expecting a big win over 5th place Quins, 15 points behind the league leaders. What a match it turned out to be, as Oxford Quins played our brand of superb expansive running rugby, a closely fought competition ending in a draw that felt like a victory, and demonstrated the extraordinary progress the squad has made this season. This week our women travel to old rivals Chinnor with a strong squad and it’s great to see the return of Fae Cutler to the squad. Let’s get over to Chinnor on Sunday for 2pm and support our women in the local derby.

At home our 1s hosted Bridgnorth in a must anticipated fixture.

Bridgnorth were the only team to have beaten us this season, they had a potent scrum, and if we’re honest we had played poorly that day. In the previous week Bridgnorth had turned over 2nd placed Stourbridge. There was a sense of anticipation here at the prospect of this match. The opening 20 minutes saw Quins build a 6 - 0 league, then we moved into a different gear. And by half time the lead was 400. And the match was effectively over. Brignorth scored a consolation try to end the match 50-5. It was an emphatic statement by the Quins men, and stretched the lead at the top of the table to 14 points, though 2nd place Stourbridge have a game in hand. With 5 rounds to go - Stoke away, Kenilworth at home, Banbury away, Syston at home, then Bromsgrove away - the prize is tantalisingly in sight but we must stay focused on the now, on our preparation, our professionalism, and the next match. For now that is all that matters.

The 1st XV are sat comfortably mid table with 5 games left to go. The depth and skill of the squad is continually improving, we have had a lot of changes to the squad this season and we are now feeling familiar with our style of play and what we need to work on.

Second half the season is well underway for the Quins Women.

The sideline support this season has been brilliant and is hugely appreciated - seeing the amount of support the women’s team have had down at Horspath Road is a great testament to the strong display of rugby the team are putting on!

This weekend we face local opposition Chinnor Kites, who will be looking to give us a tough contest and wanting a win on their home ground, particularly after we played them last time where we won 45-7! If you’re around - make the short journey down to Kingsey Road in Thame to support the team!

Leading the Women’s section as Head Coach is a great privilege. The section would not be where it is now, or even exist without the hard work and passion of Pat Metcalfe-Jones who was the Head Coach until the end of last season. I was honoured to take over leading into this season. The 2023/24 season has been a good one so far. The women’s section is still young in its existence, but it is building incredibly fast. This is year one for me. I have changed some things in how we operate, and I have introduced several new aspects to the team both technically and tactically. It was always going to be a tough start to the season. But I can’t fault the faith and the passion of all of our players.

Being part of the Oxford Harlequins team is an incredible opportunity. The club is growing significantly, and it is very exciting. The men’s section is performing outstandingly.

Since our close fixture at home against Wasps FC in the Papa Johns Cup, we have been on the climb.

The growth in our last couple of fixtures has been great to see. There’s been a clear shift in intensity at training which has given us the edge in competitive fixtures. We’re working very hard at the minute to be able to replicate the competitive nature of fixtures to best prepare us for Sundays.

We talk a lot about belief, family and professionalism within our squad and the team. This squad and the culture of the team is by far one of the best that I have been involved in. From a coaching staff perspective, we are very lucky. Charlotte Barras (Beanie) who is currently undertaking her Advanced Coaching Award (Level 3) brings a wealth of personal playing experience. I learn a lot from Beanie each week, and I know the players do too. We are extremely lucky to have a Women’s Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Fin Owen-Evans has brought another level to our physical preparation and robustness. With his expertise, we can ensure a consistent squad for our fixtures and bring the appropriate load to training sessions. Our Head of Women’s Rugby, and player, Daisy Hopkins makes everything happen. Without her work behind the scenes, and the support of the coaching team we wouldn’t be able to operate as highly as we do. The growth of the squad since August last year has been down to the strong coaching team and dedicated playing base.

We currently sit in 5th place in the league. We do have quite a way to go until we can start catching up with 3rd and 4th. However, it is something that the team wants to work towards. Our goal for the second half of the season is to chase those teams ahead of us. We have no pressure and realistically nothing to lose by leaving it all out there on the field after each fixture. The shift in mentality since the first fixture has been huge. Our club psychologist Immy Porter has supported me to help the players get to this point. Not many clubs have access to someone like Immy, let alone in our league.

On 4th February we travel away to Wymondham Rugby Cub to compete in the quarterfinals of the Papa Johns PLate. I have full faith in the squad that we can go all the way in the competition. Being able to play in a final in such a competition would be huge for the players, for the club and the growth of the women’s and girls’ game in Oxfordshire. Our game this weekend against Old Leamingtonians is a great opportunity for us to put our focus into practice and work towards both chasing the top of the league and being as prepared as possible for the plate game in February.

We are still building, and we still have far to go. But we’re in an exciting venture and I can’t wait to see where we get to over the next couple of years.

The Oxford Quins community programme has been making remarkable strides in recent months, particularly with the success of their rugby camps aimed at fostering skill development and a love for the game among young participants. The upcoming rugby camp, scheduled for February 12-13th, is set to be a highlight during the next half-term holiday period. Taking place from 9 am - 3:30 pm on both days, this two-day camp promises an engaging and instructive experience for children involved.

Previous rugby camps organised by Oxford Quins have received overwhelming positive feedback, with children thoroughly enjoying themselves while simultaneously enhancing their game understanding and skills. The success of these camps has been a testament to the club's commitment to providing a fun and educational environment for young rugby enthusiasts.

In addition to the camps, the club's schools programme has been a key driver in expanding the Oxford Quins Mini and Junior sections. The programme's continued success is evident in the growing number of children joining, showcasing the positive impact the club has on the local community and its youth.

A recent recruitment day held a few weeks ago further solidified the club's outreach efforts, drawing in more than 20 new children who eagerly joined the club. Oxford Quins is keen to continue offering recruitment days as a means for prospective members to experience firsthand what the club has to offer. These special days allow newcomers to witness the club's inclusive and nurturing environment, encouraging them to become part of the thriving Oxford Quins community.

As the club moves forward, they remain dedicated to providing opportunities for young athletes to engage with rugby, fostering not only a love for the game but also personal development and camaraderie within the community. The upcoming rugby camps and ongoing initiatives underline Oxford Quins' commitment to nurturing the next generation of rugby players and reinforcing the club's status as a welcoming and vibrant community hub
