As we enter our last weekend of rugby in 2023, it is with great sadness that I report the final whistle was blown this week for Tony Barson. Tony passed away peacefully on the 12 December after a short illness.

Tony was a great Rugby man, a stalwart of Oxford Marathons and was 1st XV captain in the 1969/70 season. The photographs of him in his playing days are on display in the club house and he does look very intimidating which really he wasn’t. He had a wry sense of humour and a cheeky grin that will be sadly missed.

Tony was instrumental in leading the merger talks between Oxford Marathons and Oxford Old Boys which led to the creation of Oxford Quins in 1996. Tony was the 2nd President of Oxford Quins and served from 1999 to 2003. I was fortunate to have worked with him during this period and always valued his advice. Tony stood down from an official role in 2003 but continued to support the Club and was a regular at 1st XV games until his recent illness.

But always with that chuckle and his grin of course. Massive for Oxford Marathon RFC and latterly The Quins. Rugby needs people like Tony and I for one will miss him at games hugely. Commiserations to his family” “I’m going to miss Tony massively. Fun and kind in equal measure. I’m really glad that I was able to visit him last week and update him on what was going on at the club. A Mara and Quin legend in equal measure” All the Quins family extend their condolences to Tony’s wife Carol and son Anthony at this sad time and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

With Christmas almost upon us, this is our last weekend of rugby, but with fixtures this weekend against Burton, Chinnor, Abingdon, Aston and Hucclecote taking place across Saturday and Sunday - there is still time to take in a game.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone – supporters, players, members, volunteers and sponsors a very Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all in 2024!

The Oxford Quins Community Programme is delighted to announce the upcoming HAF Christmas Camp, which will take place on the following dates: 21st-22nd December - 8:30am-5:30pm 27th -28th December - 8:30am-5:30pm

This four-day camp will provide kids with a diverse range of activities, Christmas-themed games, and a special visit from Santa, ensuring an enjoyable and festive experience throughout the Christmas holidays.

In addition, our three-day Rugby Camp will take place on: 2nd - 4th January 9.30am - 3.30pm

The event will focus on skill development, game scenarios, and team structures, offering young athletes aged 8-15 the opportunity to enhance their rugby abilities while enjoying the holiday season.

The Oxford Quins Community Programme is eagerly looking forward to hosting these exciting Christmas holiday events and extending a warm welcome to all participants
