Welcome

... to an incredible season of shows lined up for autumn 2025.

We’re so proud to stage an Oxford Playhouse co-production of Hugh Whitemore’s brilliant play Breaking the Code. Based on the book ‘Alan Turing: The Enigma’ by Andrew Hodges, for the first time the play will feature an epilogue that speaks to Turing’s lasting legacy on modern Britain, written by Neil Bartlett. In the run up to Breaking the Code, we will stage DETENTION from Gary Clarke dance company –exploring through vivid choreography the impact of Section 28 on LGBT+ communities. There’s also the Improbable Sessions – part gig, part TED Talk –a thrilling night of music and ideas. Don’t miss the fascinating talks which accompany the themes of the season.

A brand-new play from Amy Rosenthal tells the sensational story of the Mitford sisters. Seen through the eyes of Jessica Mitford, The Party Girls is a witty and compelling play exploring how this remarkable family was riven by political extremism. Another highlight is an electrifying new stage adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley. This gripping psychological thriller takes us into the intoxicating world of a chillingly charismatic antihero. Marking the 250 th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth, from Theatre Royal Bath Productions comes a delightful new staging of Emma and her misplaced attempts at matchmaking!

With fantastic comedians, festive folk music, fascinating talks for curious minds, not to mention a visit from everyone’s favourite puddle-jumping pig, there is much to be excited about. Before we know it, we’ll be welcoming you into the joy that is an Oxford Playhouse pantomime - this year the witty and magical adventure of Dick Whittington. It’s a perfect seasonal treat for everyone from 5 to 105! If you’re under 5 we’ve got another festive Oxford Playhouse production for you – Where’s Father Christmas? - playing in The Studio.

We hope you enjoy the autumn season!

Gary Clarke Company DETENTION

In 1988, a piece of legislation from Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative Government devastated lives. Gary Clarke Company’s new dance theatre show, explores Section 28, which ‘prohibited the promotion of homosexuality’, forcing the LGBT+ community into a place of secrecy, fear and shame. Set to a backdrop of nationwide industrial turmoil and the onslaught of AIDS, DETENTION is, above all, a moving celebration of solidarity.

Gary Clarke uses powerful storytelling, drawing on verbatim testimonies, with vivid choreography performed by a company of exceptional dancers, narrator, and local cast of LGBT+ people. Featuring music tracks by iconic Test Dept, DETENTION is a bold and moving portrayal of the remarkable resilience of the individuals and organisations of the time.

HHHH “DETENTION is hard-hitting but laced with humour. It’s a portrait of a particular period in time that still echoes down the decades.”

The Guardian

“Superbly performed by five dancers and five community recruits from the LGBT+ community... It’s a hard hitting, emotional work.”

The Observer

“Since its founding

in

2016, Gary Clarke and his company has won many accolades and awards. DETENTION will surely win many more.”

Hugh Whitemore’s Breaking the Code

Based on the book ‘Alan Turing: The Enigma’ by Andrew Hodges

Directed by Jesse Jones

With a new epilogue by Neil Bartlett

“It’s not breaking a code that matters, it’s where you go from there.”

Mastermind. Code breaker. Maverick. Arguably one of the most important and inquisitive minds of the 20 th century. Alan Turing is famed for cracking the Enigma code at Bletchley Park, effectively securing victory for the Allied forces in World War Two.

From triumph to tragedy, get to know a human being who loved, lost and never stopped asking questions in a quest for truth and understanding in this new production of Hugh Whitemore’s Breaking the Code

For the first time, taking into consideration his recent Royal pardon and the development of Turing’s Law, the original play will feature a new epilogue by Neil Bartlett that speaks to his lasting legacy on modern Britain.

Oxford Playhouse is thrilled to be co-producing this brilliant play. See page 11 for the programme of events and talks running alongside this production.

Meanwhile Decca crosses continents in her own passionate pursuit of love –but can she ever escape her sisters and her past?

The Talented Mr. Ripley

Adapted for the stage by Mark

“I never wanted to murder anyone. It was necessary.”

Step into a world of deception, desire, and deadly ambition. How far would you go to become someone else?

Tom Ripley is a nobody — scraping by in New York, forging signatures, telling little white lies — until a chance encounter changes everything. When a wealthy stranger offers him an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy to bring home his wayward son, Dickie Greenleaf, Tom leaps at the opportunity.

But in the sun-drenched glamour of 1950s Europe, surrounded by shimmering waters and whispered secrets, Tom is seduced by the life Dickie leads—the freedom, the wealth, the effortless charm. Fascination turns to obsession, and as his grip tightens on Dickie’s world, the lines between truth and deception begin to blur. What starts as an innocent opportunity spirals into a chilling game of lies, identity theft, and murder.

This electrifying new stage adaptation brings Patricia Highsmith’s iconic psychological thriller to life like never before. With razor-sharp dialogue, simmering tension, and a dangerously charismatic antihero, this gripping production will pull you into Ripley’s intoxicating world — where nothing is quite as it seems.

Emma

“I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like.”

This autumn, we celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th anniversary with a sparkling new stage adaptation of Emma. This witty and beloved comedy of manners is produced by the Theatre Royal Bath - the city synonymous with so many of Austen’s stories.

Headstrong and high-spirited, Emma Woodhouse - handsome, clever, and rich - has sworn never to marry. Instead, she delights in meddling in the romantic lives of those around her. But as her matchmaking schemes unfold, could she find herself caught in love’s wake?

Filled with Austen’s unforgettable characters - Mr. Knightley, Jane Fairfax, Harriet Smith, and the delightfully pretentious Augusta Elton. The Annual Charles Simonyi Lecture

Beyond Weird

A century ago, Werner Heisenberg’s ideas led to quantum mechanics, a theory that precisely describes how atoms behave. Despite its accuracy, scientists still debate what it tells us about reality.

In Beyond Weird, Philip Ball explores how popular stories of particles being in two places at once oversimplify the even stranger truths. In this talk, Ball explains how new ideas might help reconcile quantum mechanics with general relativity.

Hosted by Marcus du Sautoy, Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford.

A View from the Bridge

Brooklyn’s docks. 1950s America. A man on the edge.

Arthur Miller’s award-winning play follows Eddie Carbone, a Brooklyn longshoreman whose world unravels when his wife’s Italian cousins arrive illegally. As his niece Catherine falls for the charming Rodolpho, Eddie’s protectiveness turns possessive. Bound by law yet powerless to stop the tragedy, Italian American lawyer Alfieri watches as personal obsession collides with cultural code in a slow march toward destruction. A simmering tragedy of justice, masculinity, and control.

University of Oxford student company Labyrinth Productions presents a bold new staging of Miller’s A View from the Bridge, featuring striking visuals, dramatic lighting, an original score, and live orchestra. A sharp, geometric design foregrounds the emotional core of the story—making it feel immediate, human, and fiercely relevant today.

The tension is palpable. The atmosphere claustrophobic yet captivating.

Look closely - things are unravelling.

EN HOUSE

Did you know that every year Oxford Playhouse...

• Gives away around 2,500 tickets absolutely free to community groups, individuals and school groups that might otherwise not be able to attend;

• Offers bursaries for young people to take part in our companies;

• Welcomes older people for social events and a chance to chat;

• And works with local charities like Yellow Submarine and KEEN to run activities open to all.

Open House ensures that as many people as possible, whatever their background or circumstance, have access to creative opportunity and live performance.

“I can’t thank you enough for giving the families an opportunity to access the Playhouse and the chance for their children to take part in something others may take for granted.”

East Oxford Childrens Centre

It’s through the generosity of our supporters and funders that we can keep this valuable work going. Please help us today by donating to Open House at The Playhouse. Every donation makes a difference.

Captioned Performances convert spoken word into text that appears on a screen as the words are sung or spoken on stage.

British Sign Language (BSL) Performances feature a BSL interpreter, who stands at the side of the stage and interprets the show for D/deaf audiences.

Audio Described Performances (via headphones) offer a live narration describing the action in the pauses between the onstage dialogue, for those who are blind or partially sighted. Free Touch Tours also accompany these performances and are a chance to explore the set before the show begins.

Relaxed Performances are specifically set up to be more sensitive to audiences who may benefit from a more relaxed environment, including people with autistic spectrum conditions, learning disabilities or young children. The house lights will be partially on, sound levels reduced, and audience members can come and go as they please and make noise if they want to.

Dementia Friendly Performances are carefully tailored for those living with dementia and their friends, family or carers, so everyone can enjoy the show in a supportive, comfortable, and relaxed environment. Adaptations include reduced volume of music when dialogue is taking place.
