If you want to study abroad but don't speak English as a first language, you'll almost certainly have to take a language exam before being accepted to an international university that offers English-taught degrees.

But how do you know which English language test to take? The answer is contingent on a number of things, including which test/exam is accepted by the university where you wish to apply, which exam centres are nearby, and how much you're willing to pay.

Don't be alarmed if it appears to be perplexing. We'll compare three of the most popular English language examinations in this article:

Academic IELTS The IELTS Academic exam is divided into four sections: ● ●

30 minutes of listening You'll hear four native speakers on four different recordings.

After that, you'll have to respond to 40 questions.

Academic 60 minutes of reading You will be required to read three texts and then respond to 40 questions.

60 minutes for academic writing There are two tasks to complete. You must describe a graph, table, chart, or other visual information in your own words for the first one. You must write an essay in response to a point of view, a problem, or an argument in the second one. For both exercises, you must write in a formal tone.

11-14 minutes of speaking time There are three components to the exam: you will tell the examiner about yourself, describe or express your opinion on a specific topic, and then discuss more abstract ideas or concepts.

TOEFL iBT is a computerised version of the TOEFL test.

The TOEFL iBT exam is divided into four sections: ● ● ● ● ●

Reading time is between 54 and 72 minutes. You'll read three or four scholarly passages.

Then you'll have to respond to 30-40 questions.

Time to listen: 41-57 minutes You'll be asked to listen to four recordings of native speakers before answering 28-39 questions.

17 minutes of speaking You must express your thoughts on a common topic and respond to questions based on reading and listening exercises.

50 minutes of writing There are two tasks to complete. You'll have to write essay responses and provide evidence to back up your claims.

In the Reading and Listening parts of the TOEFL, the number of questions varies. Why? The number is determined by the length, type, and difficulty of the text(s) and audio recording (s).

Academic PTE The PTE Academic, or Pearson Test of English, is divided into three sections: ● ● ●

77–93 minutes for speaking and writing. You'll have to do things like introduce oneself, read aloud, describe a visual, summarise a text, and write an essay, among other things.

32–40 minutes of reading You'll have to fill in the blanks, answer multiple-choice questions, and rearrange paragraphs, among other things.

45–57 minutes of listening After listening to or watching audio or video samples, you'll have to answer a series of questions.

How long does it take to finish the IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE tests?

The three English tests last about the same amount of time: 1. Academic IELTS: 2 hours and 45 minutes 2. TOEFL iBT: The computer-based test takes 3 hours. Because the new TOEFL paperdelivered test does not include a Speaking section, it takes 2 hours and 25 minutes to complete. However, it is only available in areas where there is no access to the internet.

For university admission, test scores and minimum grades are required.

The grading system for each exam is different. The IELTS Academic test is scored on a scale of 0 to 9. A score is assigned to each test segment (or section). To get an overall score, the four scores are averaged and rounded.

The TOEFL iBT test is scored on a scale of 0 to 120. A maximum of 30 points are available for each section. You must answer at least 1 question in each Reading and Listening, compose at least 1 essay, and complete at least 1 Speaking exercise to obtain an official score.

The Global Scale of English is used to assess the PTE Academic exam, which ranges from 10 to 90.

Each institution or college is entitled to set its own minimum grade requirement for admission.

The majority of educational institutions demand: 1. For IELTS Academic, a minimum score of 6.0 or 6.5 is required. Scores as low as 5.0–5.5 are accepted by some universities.

2. A TOEFL iBT score of 70–80 is required. Scores as low as 65 are accepted by some universities.

3. PTE Academic requires a minimum score of 55–60. Scores as low as 50 are accepted by some universities.

What is the duration of each English test?

The scores of all three tests (IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE) are valid for two years after they are published. You'll have to retake the exam if you need to demonstrate your English skills after that time frame.

What is the cost of each language test?

IELTS Academic fees Fees are established in your local currency, thus they differ based on the country and test centre where you take the exam: In India, it costs between 13 to 15,000 Rs. In the United States, it costs between 215 and 240 dollars.

In the UK, 162–180 GBP (210–234 USD) In Norway, the exchange rate is between 2,950 and 3,000 NOK (331 and 337 USD).

In Germany, 229 (255 USD) In Australia, 340 AUD (236 USD)

The above prices and countries are merely provided as examples. Many other countries and test centres across the world offer the exams. Always utilise the official IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE pages to locate and register for the nearest exam centre.

Is this a British or American English exam?

You can utilise either British or American English when taking the IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or PTE Academic. Make sure, however, that you remain consistent throughout the exam.

For example, don't switch to "colour" and "specialise" later in the exam if you started with "colour" and "specialise." It's entirely up to you.

What countries accept English language tests?

Thousands of organisations throughout the world accept and recognise all three English language tests: ● ●

Over 10,000 institutions in over 140 countries accept IELTS. In the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, and South Africa, IELTS is particularly popular.

More than 10,000 institutions and other organisations in over 150 countries accept TOEFL. Universities in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, and Germany typically favour TOEFL. Thousands of institutions in a variety of countries accept PTE Academic. In Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland, it is extremely popular.

Universities and colleges frequently accept two or three English language competency examinations, with some even accepting all three. If you intend to attend a specific university, find out what language exams it allows so you know which English exam to take.

All three English examinations are normally only available at specialised centres. Both online and paper-based tests fall into this category. On the official website of each test, you can always find the closest centre. ●

The IELTS Academic test is available both online and on paper. If you register for the computer-based IELTS, you will have a larger selection of exam dates to choose from.

There are no variations between the computer and paper-based tests in terms of structure, substance, or timing. The Speaking section is always conducted in front of a trained IELTS examiner.

The TOEFL iBT is normally given online, although there is a paper version for those who do not have access to the internet. There is no Speaking section on the paper test because there is no means to record the answers.

Only a computer-based version of the PTE Academic test is available.

What is the difficulty level of IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE? It's tough to say which English proficiency test is the most difficult. However, using the free resources provided by IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE on their websites is a simple approach to assess your present English ability.

Remember that how you study for a test is more essential than how difficult it is or what others say about it. These tests are not intended to be barriers, but rather an opportunity to demonstrate that you have the English abilities necessary to live and study in another country.

Steps to take to prepare for an English language test in general How much time should you devote to studying for the exam?

It is very dependent on your current level of English. Some pupils have exceptional English skills, and the test is merely a means of obtaining official certification for them.

Others will find the exam to be a genuine struggle, therefore they should begin studying early. If possible, I'd recommend starting learning and practising 1 or 2 years before the exam, based on my experience. If not, you can make significant progress in a few months with a lot more effort, discipline, and stress.

What should you do to prepare for the Reading section?

You may be asked difficult questions throughout the Reading part. They'll see how well you understand the material and if you can pick up on topics that are inferred but not explicitly stated. It's advisable to look at various sorts of material (descriptive, persuasive, informational), as well as different styles (formal, casual), and try to figure out what the author is trying to convey explicitly, indirectly, and what he or she doesn't say.

Reading English articles on areas you're interested in is a terrific method to practise. Start reading information published in English, especially content generated by native English speakers, if you enjoy sports, politics, nature, or any other topic. Examine academic writings to see how they differ from other types of written materials and where you might have trouble understanding them.

What should you do to prepare for the Listening section?

Start watching online videos and movies without subtitles to improve your listening abilities. It may be challenging at first, but it will get much easier with practise. You'll be shocked at how quickly you progress.

If this is too tough for you, utilise English subtitles rather than your local language. Have you come across a word you're unfamiliar with? Great! Find out what it means and memorise it.

Make sure you know how it's used and when it's used. You won't have to pause the audio/video the next time you hear it.

Another excellent technique to practise is to pick random English songs and try to write down the words as you listen to them. You might be shocked at how many words are different from what you heard when you first listened to the song.

Make sure you're not only using simple audio/video materials. Investigate various accents (American, British, Australian, and so on), native speakers, and patience, as listening is a talent that takes time to master.

What should you do to prepare for the Writing section?

Reading practise will also assist you in preparing for the writing portion of the exam. You can't write wonderful texts if you don't even know what a text looks like or sounds like, can you?

Reading can also help you expand your vocabulary, which will be beneficial to any prospective international student.

While writing can be difficult, begin where you are and don't overthink things. Try writing a one- or two-paragraph description of something you adore. Then try to improve it: use the proper adjectives, divide big sentences in half, and double-check that ideas are well-connected.

Is your grammar correct? Is the punctuation correct? Spelling? Is the key point obvious? All of these considerations must be made when creating a manuscript.

There's also the matter of fashion. It would be a great mistake to write a casual text when a formal one is requested. Alternatively, vice versa. In addition, persuasive writing takes a different approach than an informative text. You must be aware of these facts. You should also understand how an essay is structured and what distinguishes a good essay from a bad one.

All of this preparation necessitates a significant amount of writing, reviewing, refining, and rewriting. You may not enjoy it, and it might be frustrating, but being a brilliant English speaker without learning the art of writing would be a pity.

What should you do to prepare for the Speaking section?

Many students believe that the Speaking section is the most difficult. Why? Because conversing with an examiner while nervous is difficult. You may make errors, lose your ideas, or be unsure how to continue what you're saying. That's OK. Speaking, like any other skill, requires practise.

You'll be relieved to learn that only the IELTS exam needs you to speak with an examiner face to face. You can use a microphone to record your answers on the TOEFL and PTE. If you absolutely don't want to speak to people face to face, you can take one of the other two tests if your university allows it.

You'll have to talk again, so practise, practise, practise! The fear of making a mistake is typically the most difficult obstacle to overcome. That's fine, though. When learning anything new, many people make blunders. You must overcome your nervousness and continue speaking, even if you are aware that you mispronounced a word or failed to use the correct adverb.

Vocabulary is a fantastic method to boost your self-esteem. Finding the correct word can be frustrating and disappointing; you may have something to say but don't know how to say it. To get around this, try writing a new sentence (or multiple sentences if necessary) that explains the missing word or allows you to leave it out. It may not sound wonderful, but it enables you to continue speaking and practising.

You'll become more confident as you learn new terms, and one day you'll be glad to say that you can express yourself fluently in English.

I'm not sure which English language test I should take.

Do you think we'll mention this or that test? I'm sorry for disappointing you. If you've read this far, you're aware that the IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE tests are all structured, priced, and available in the same way.

The university where you intend to apply may limit your options. Some colleges accept all three English tests, while others accept only IELTS or TOEFL, or perhaps only one of them.

Even though you have the option of choosing amongst these examinations, you should first check to see what exam dates and locations are available in your area. Traveling to another city is a possibility, but if the distance is too great, you may prefer a centre that is closer to you.

You should also experiment with free internet resources to discover whether one exam appears to be easier than the others. This is a simple technique to make a decision.

It makes no difference whether you take IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or PTE Academic.
