FMS Annual 2022 - Message from the Bishop

Message from the Bishop

Bishop Dr Gordon Wong - Bishop of The Methodist Church in Singapore

Since the dawn of time, the world had to endure challenges that threaten our survival. In recent years, we confronted the biggest test of our generation – the COVID-19 pandemic. We have lost many lives and suffered much disruption. There are countries struggling to recover from the distress and grappling with the perennially mutating variants. There are countries being embroiled in political strife, and also countries tackling economic uncertainty and social unrest.

Just like the world, Fairfield has come a long way since it was founded in 1888. The school has survived two terrible World Wars, the Great Depression of the 1930s, racial riots, terrorist attacks, the global financial crisis, and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a technology boom last experienced in the late 90s. In education, we have more opportunities for online learning. More educators have increasingly honed their e-pedagogy expertise and tapped on a variety of technology tools and platforms to engage their learners.

In this ever-changing world, where both danger and opportunities lurk at every corner, do we have what it takes to adapt in a volatile environment and to take setbacks in our stride? Could we learn from our mistakes and move on to build a better and brighter future?

‘Stronger as One Fairfield’ is the school theme for 2022.

Indeed, we do need much strength to weather the challenges that continue to come our way. No one knows what new challenges will assail our world in the months and years ahead. If we can turn provocation into opportunities for growth and boost our resilience in the process, then success would taste even sweeter. Still, whatever the pressure may be, we will always be Stronger as One Fairfield.

Young Fairsians, be brave and cultivate a spirit of excellence in everything you do. Give of your best but do not be afraid of failing. Always remember that you are not alone. You have with you those who love and support you. May God bless us all with the strength that comes from being one with God and with one another. We are Stronger as One Fairfield.

Thank you for staying strong and for helping one another in your journey to become resilient individuals.
