When I was seventeen, my dream was to apply to Oxford to study French and History but my school would not support me. I was a bit of a rebel and did not fit their picture of a typical Oxford applicant. I never forgot this lack of support for my ambitions, but I went to the University of Leeds and was very happy there studying History and Russian, in which I achieved a joint first, going on to complete a PhD afterwards.

I was delighted when I was appointed some years later to a Darby Fellowship in History at Lincoln College, Oxford., which entitled me to an Oxford MA and all the benefits and responsibilities of being part of the amazing academic community of Oxford. I made up for not attending as a student by playing field hockey with the college student hockey team! I loved hurrying down Turl Street in my gown to dine at the high table in college in a tradition unchanged for centuries. I relished the architecture, the history and Oxford’s atmosphere of learning. I followed this with a post at Russell Group University, Exeter. In addition to lecturing and publishing books and articles in history, I was in charge of admissions for a large department there.

Eventually, the lure of Oxford was too much to resist, and I returned, this time as a student of experimental psychology. Taking up science was a challenge, but I relished the opportunity to extend my knowledge, attend lectures and take part in exciting lab practicals. After completing the BA I moved with my family to Cambridge where I taught psychology IB and A level, publishing A-level textbooks in psychology.

I enjoyed Cambridge with its colourful market square, elegant colleges, and green spaces threaded by the River Cam, but Oxford drew me back and I returned to lead the UCAS team in a local school.

Recently I sought a new challenge and am delighted to hold the position of Acting Head of Oxbridge Summer Scholars. It is my goal to ensure that today’s students have the opportunity to enjoy the cherished academic experience that initially eluded me but then catalysed my journey. As you apply to global universities, your experience at Oxbridge Summer Scholars can demonstrate your intellectual vitality and commitment to challenge yourself. In short, it enables you to stand out on the world stage. I can’t wait for you to experience the magic of Oxbridge and with the rest of the OSS team hope to welcome you to Oxford or Cambridge in the very near future!

The Universities of Oxford and Cambridge THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD The University of Oxford, founded in the 11th Century, is the oldest university in the English-speaking world. It is located in the city of Oxford and is comprised of 44 colleges and halls. It is renowned for its strong programmess in a range of disciplines, from humanities and social sciences to the natural sciences, as well as its world-class research centres and libraries. Oxford has a long tradition of producing successful alumni, including Nobel laureates, 30 UK Prime Ministers, and other notable figures in politics, literature and the arts.

INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH At Oxbridge Summer Scholars, we believe in the power of interdisciplinary learning. Our programmes are designed to expose you to a wide range of subjects and perspectives, fostering a deep understanding of complex issues, while still enabling you to focus on your primary area of interest.

OXBRIDGE TUTORIAL SYSTEM In addition to daily lectures and interactive seminars, OSS programmes offer students tutorials (intensive small group classes) in their favourite subjects. The tutorial system is a cornerstone of the world-class education offered by Oxford and Cambridge Universities. This distinctive approach to teaching is designed to foster independent thinking, critical analysis, and a deep understanding of complex subjects.

SELECTIVE PROGRAMME Oxbridge Summer Scholars is a uniquely selective summer school. We interview all applicants to ensure that they have the required level of fluency in English and also the academic mindset and motivation that will enable them to benefit from the university-level teaching we provide on the programme. This means that you will benefit from meeting truly like-minded students who share your academic goals and ambitions.

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT One of the highlights of the Oxbridge Summer Scholars programme is the requirement to undertake an individual research project. This assignment allows you to delve deeper into a topic that interests you, showcasing your research, critical thinking, and writing skills, and is assessed by tutors who are subject specialists.

OXBRIDGE SUMMER SCHOLARS | 06

A Day at Oxbridge Summer Scholars 8am

Students start the day with breakfast in a college dining hall with other programme attendees and faculty.

9.15am

We start the day with the first seminar run by a visiting tutor who delivers a short lecture before taking the group into class-wide discussions or setting them off on independent coursework, group projects or presentations.

10.45am

The second session of the day aims to deepen learning in the sciences, humanities and arts with a follow-up sesson on a topic related to that of the first seminar.

12pm

Students and tutors lunch together in a college dining hall.

1pm

After lunch there will be a choice of tutorials (small-group disussion classes) in two or three majors. If students do not have a tutorial, they are free to explore the city centre with its modern shops, old colleges, and green spaces.

1.45pm

The third seminar of the day is an occasion for students to meet a new tutor and explore another discipline, or continue to broaden their knowledge of subjects discussed in the previous two sessions earlier in the day.

3pm

The third seminar is followed by a new choice of tutorial subjects. If students do not have a tutorial at this time, they will have an opportunity to prepare some reading, prepare for the following day, or rest.

4pm

The day finishes with one last interdisciplinary lecture delivered by an academic or professional invited for their excellent reputation and strong interdisciplinary expertise in their fields.

6pm

Faculty, tutors, and students dine together in formal and informal dinners in a college dining hall.

7pm

After dinner our residential team encourages the students to socialise, prepare the reading for the following day, or relax in the common room of a college.

Science, Innovation & Technology (SIT)

Suitable for undergraduate courses including: Maths, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Earth Sciences, Materials Science, Cosmology, Astrophysics Science, Innovation and Technology (SIT) is an interdisciplinary field that investigates the dynamic interplay between society and mathsrelated STEM disciplines. Our SIT program provides exceptional learning experiences led by alumni from Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College, London. It encourages exploration through interdisciplinary perspectives, aiming to foster a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted interactions within the realm of science and technology. The SIT stream will equip you with the knowledge and skills to engage with intricate challenges in our ever-evolving world.

The SIT stream explores the latest developments in science and technology.

By examining the role of science and technology in shaping society, students gain valuable analytical skills and knowledge that can be applied across a wide range of fields and professions.

Medical and Biological Sciences (MBS)

Suitable for undergraduate courses including: Medicine, Biology, Chemistry, Dentistry, Veterinary, Biochemistry, Psychology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Psychology, Evolution, Anthropology.

The MBS stream is versatile and can cater to a wide range of interests within the biological, medical, and health sciences. It prepares students for careers in healthcare, research, academia, and various interdisciplinary roles that require a strong foundation in these fields. Additionally, it fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of the complex interactions between biological, medical, and human factors in the context of health and well-being.

The MBS stream is an academic program or area of study that combines various disciplines related to medicine and health sciences.

This stream is designed to provide you with both an understanding of the biological and medical aspects of the human body, as well as the broader context of health careers.

Business, Economics and Entrepreneurship (BEE)

Suitable for undergraduate courses including: Business, Entrepreneurship, Economics, Finance, Politics, International Relations, Sustainability.

The BEE stream presents students with the opportunity to experience undergraduate-level teaching in economics and business, which is quite different in nature from what students experience at the high school level. It provides students with the tools to build and lead successful futures at university and beyond.

Through interactive debates, group work and individual projects, BEE focuses on the interrelationship between economics, business and society. This stream provides a deep dive into the challenges and opportunities of responsible enterprise and global issues. Students will finish the course prepared to pursue university courses in these disciplines.

The BEE stream provides a wide-ranging introduction to the worlds of business and economics in an international context.

Students will finish the course prepared to pursue careers in a wide range of fields, from academic research to developing non-profits, start-ups or working for government.

Law, PPE and Global Issues (LPGI)

Suitable for undergraduate courses including: Law, PPE, Global Issues, History, Literature, Philosophy, Classics, Sociology, Religion.

This stream will prepare students planning to apply to study law, PPE, philosophy or politics and international relations. Knowledge of philosophy is an excellent basis for the study of law, and for those interested in international law or human rights law, an understanding of global issues is also crucial. This programme will enable you to gain insight, not only into the workings of the law but also into the societal and ethical context within which the law operates.

The LPGI stream provides an excellent foundation for those considering applications for a range of courses from Law to International Relations.

For those wishing to study PPE this programme, together with the option of studying economics alongside students in Stream C covers all the necessary bases. It is also an excellent foundation for the study of politics and international relations more broadly.

Creative Writing and Humanities (CWH)

Suitable for undergraduate courses including: Creative Writing, Humanities Science, History, Literature, Classics, Philosophy Those wishing to pursue a career in creative writing are well advised to embed their creative endeavours within a broad context of past human achievement in the field of classics, literature and history. Great writers are not born, they are made.

It is only by exposing yourself to the development of literary art forms from the great writers of ancient Greece and Rome through the poets and dramatists of the Renaissance to contemporary novelists that you can mould yourself into a successful writer.

The CWH stream offers students a platform to explore their creativity and their interests in history, literature and classics in a collaborative academic environment.

The CWH stream offers students a unique opportunity to learn from alumni from the most prestigious universities for the humanities in the UK.

Students applying for the visual arts and architecture share the requirement for a creative and inspired portfolio of their work. This programme offers you the opportunity of developing your creative skills in art/architecture workshops, guided by tutors from Oxford Brookes and other top art/architecture schools as well as attending academic seminars/lectures on fine art, architecture and art history.

The Visual Arts & Architecture (VAA) stream offers students a unique opportunity to explore their creativity in workshops as well as attending lectures and seminars.

The VAA stream offers students a unique opportunity to learn from alumni from the most prestigious universities for the humanities in the UK.

Application & Fees

PROGRAMME COST Cost £5850 + registration fee (non-refundable): £500 The programme cost includes accommodation for the duration of the programme, three meals per day, educational activities, and all extracurricular activities.

However, the programme does not cover transportation to and from the UK, transfers within the UK, or pocket money.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Age: be at least 16 years old by the move-in day of the program English Language Requirement: if your high school’s official language of instruction is not English, you can demonstrate your language proficiency during an interview with one of the members of our Admissions Team.

You will be invited to a brief interview with our Admissions Team. During the interview, we will work together to select the appropriate programme and intake, and address any questions you may have.

STEP 3

After the interview, you will receive an offer for one of our programmes. To secure your place, you will need to pay the first instalment of £1,000 within 7 days, with the remaining balance due within the following 30 days.
