SHANG XIA 上下的诞生
2008 年，以工匠精神和创造力闻名的法国品牌爱马仕，开 始探索复兴世界其他地区文化遗产的机会。在探索了印 度和非洲各国的古老工艺之后，他们将目光投向了中国。
彼时，中国设计师蒋琼耳正在为爱马仕设计橱窗，二者的 愿景一拍即合，即把中国文化和手工艺与当代中国美学相 结合，创造一个时尚和生活方式品牌。同年，爱马仕与蒋 琼耳达成了合作协议，这标志着 SHANG XIA 上下故事的开 始。
品牌名称“ SHANG XIA 上下”，简单至极，又可以回溯至令 人深思的中国哲学思想：上下五千年，承上而启下；路漫漫
其修远兮，吾将上下而求索。在关于新公司的许多早期讨 论中，爱马仕的艺术总监 Pierre-Alexis Dumas 画了一个圆。 他说，世界就像这个圆一样轮回，而这个圆捕捉到了许多 的多元性，上与下，东与西，传统与当代……看似对立，但 实则互为补充。
SHANG XIA 上下的目标明确―复兴中国文化和手工艺， 将其与当代设计相结合，并将这一过程中产生的高品质产 品传播到世界各地。中国虽然也有很多高水准的手工技艺， 但大多散落在民间，而且很多技艺的传承处于岌岌可危的 状态。爱马仕和 SHANG XIA 上下希望通过帮助手工艺人重 建他们的生产能力和发展手工艺产业链，支持那些濒临灭 绝的手工艺。这一高瞻远瞩的愿景需要付出巨大的人力 和财力投入。但是，这不仅为品牌未来的发展奠定了基础， 也使 SHANG XIA 上下成为致力于中国手工艺保护和发展的 先驱，并将其置于中国设计的最前沿。因此，SHANG XIA 上 下也带着使命而生―帮助引领中国古老工艺的复兴。
The Birth of SHANG XIA
In 2008, SHANG XIA was conceived as a concept that merged modern design with traditional Chinese craftsmanship. Jiang Qiong’er, cofounder of SHANG XIA, was working in Paris with Hermès when she envisioned blending ancient Chinese culture and artisanal skills with contemporary aesthetics to create a unique home decor and lifestyle brand. This philosophy resonated deeply with Hermès, a company renowned for its commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. Recognizing the alignment in values and the potential of SHANG XIA, Hermès decided to cofound the brand, marking the beginning of a transformative journey.
The name “SHANG XIA” is rooted in ancient Chinese poetry, symbolizing a bridge between the past and the future, and representing the complementary nature of tradition and modernity. The concept of SHANG XIA encompasses the rich history and cultural heritage of China, aiming to preserve and revive traditional crafts while incorporating modern design elements.
The purpose of SHANG XIA was clear: to revive Chinese culture and handicrafts, merge them with contemporary design, and share exceptional products with the world. China’s handicrafts were geographically scattered with many nearing extinction. SHANG XIA aimed to support endangered crafts by helping artisans rebuild their production capacities and developing a robust handicraft industry. This vision required significant effort and financial investment, positioning SHANG XIA as a leader in Chinese craft preservation and innovation.

2010 年，经过两年时间的精心准备，SHANG XIA 上下品牌 正式成立，首个系列甫一亮相便惊艳了世界，其中包括几 个标志性的作品：“雕塑”系列羊绒毡大衣，“桥”系列竹 丝扣瓷茶具，“ 大天地”的紫檀系列家具等。随后，在品牌 诞生后的第一个十年里，SHANG XIA 上下为其使命奠定了 坚实的根基。精心梳理中国文化脉络，从三个历史朝代获 得灵感，汉代（服装）、宋代（器物）和明代（家具），开创 了六个类别：家具、家居、成衣、皮具、珠宝和配饰―共 同构建起 SHANG XIA 上下“生活的艺术”的形象。
The Brand's First Collection
In 2010, after two years of preparation, SHANG XIA officially launched. The first collection included iconic pieces such as the “Sculpture” cashmere felt coat, the “Bridge” Porcelain Tea Set with Bamboo Weaving, and Da Tian Di sandalwood furniture. SHANG XIA’s designs have been collected and exhibited by world-renowned museums, including the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques-Guimet. These designs have also been featured by international auction houses and recognized by authoritative media and influencers. This recognition has solidified SHANG XIA’s reputation as a brand that seamlessly blends heritage with modernity.
In 2015, SHANG XIA introduced the Da Tian Di Collection Carbon Fiber Chair. This chair combines Ming-style aesthetics with futuristic design, using carbon fiber. Despite its thin and lightweight structure, the chair is incredibly strong, symbolizing the perfect blend of classic and contemporary elements. The Da Tian Di chair is a testament to SHANG XIA's innovative approach, showcasing how traditional designs can be reinterpreted using advanced materials and techniques.
As SHANG XIA enters its second decade, it reflects China's growing presence on the global stage. In 2021, SHANG XIA introduced a new logo symbolizing diversity and duality. The brand continues to draw inspiration from Chinese culture, interpreting it in a contemporary context, and valuing both heritage and innovation. Through advanced technologies and traditional craftsmanship, SHANG XIA creates products that celebrate China’s magnificent heritage with timeless designs that will be celebrated for generations to come.

竹丝扣瓷
竹丝扣瓷是国家级非物质文化遗产的工艺，SHANG XIA 上 下桥系列竹丝扣瓷茶具采用“双线交叉走丝”的立体编织 工艺，经篾和编篾都增加到两根，编织效果大为提升。工 艺师仅用一把简单的刀，手工将竹子劈成细丝，紧贴瓷面 编织，竹编的每一处接头藏而不露。百斤原竹，只抽丝八 两。所使用的竹丝最细可达 0.33 毫米。白瓷功夫茶具由 1300 度以上高温烧制而成，光泽温润如玉。
Bamboo Weaving
Bamboo weaving has ancient roots in China. Artisans handsplit bamboo into fine threads and meticulously weave them onto the porcelain surface, hiding each joint with exceptional skill. SHANG XIA’s bamboo weaving porcelain uses a threedimensional double-line interlaced weaving technique. Thousands of these bamboo threads, some as thin as 0.33 millimeters, must be manually crafted since no machine can replicate this process. The white porcelain tea sets are fired at temperatures above 1300 degrees Celsius, resulting in a lustrous finish.
薄胎瓷
SHANG XIA 上下薄胎瓷精选景德镇高岭土，经四十多道工 序制作而成。瓷壁薄约 0.5 到 1 毫米，需经百余次的手工 修胚，从而做到白如玉、薄如纸、明如镜、声如磬。因此， 薄胎瓷素有“薄如蝉翼、轻如浮云，轻叩闻之宛若天籁” 之美赞。
Porcelain has been a hallmark of Chinese artistry for millennia, celebrated for its delicate beauty, durability, and its pivotal role in global trade throughout history. Our porcelain is crafted from high-quality kaolin clay sourced from Jingdezhen, meticulously shaped through over 40 intricate processes. With a thickness of just 0.5 to 1 mm, each piece undergoes over a hundred manual refinements. The result is porcelain as white as jade, as thin as paper, as bright as a mirror, and resonant like a chime.

竹丝镶嵌
竹丝镶嵌是省级非物质文化遗产，流传自清代，是宫廷的 装饰工艺。选用生长 4 至 6 年的成年毛竹，一根竹子通常 只有中段竹节匀长的 4 至 5 节可供使用，竹节长达 30 厘米，
孔径 10 厘米，这样的竹子制成竹丝，才最为均匀平整。匠
人们用清润的长竹丝搭成底板，再用镊子衔着短丝一个个 嵌入，连片成型。一面光润，一面素朴，一片 10 厘米见方 的竹丝镶嵌花板，需上千竹片拼成，严丝合缝，宛若天成。
Bamboo Marquetry
Bamboo marquetry, a unique handicraft from Zhejiang, transforms bamboo into intricate relief designs for home decor, such as panels, screens, and lanterns. Celebrated for its classical elegance, this art form was prized by China’s literati and introduced to the imperial palace during the Qing Dynasty, with examples still preserved in the Forbidden City’s Retirement Lodge. The process begins with the careful selection of mature bamboo in winter, followed by precise preparation and cutting into thin strips. Master artisans then notch the strips for seamless fitting and meticulously inlay them into geometric patterns. SHANG XIA works with the finest craftsmen in China and we ensure that each piece reflects the dedication and expertise required to perfect this traditional art.

Woodworking
We use precious woods to create furniture pieces that are both durable and exquisitely beautiful. Each piece is crafted with precision, ensuring the wood's color and grain are harmoniously aligned. The meticulous hand-polishing process gives the furniture a silk-like texture, while special treatments enhance the wood's longevity, allowing it to gracefully endure through time.

Cashmere Felt
We collaborate with Mongolian artisans to craft cashmere felt garments using traditional techniques. Made from handselected cashmere, revered as “soft gold” for its exceptional warmth and lightness, each piece is entirely handmade without seams or stitching. Modern refinements enhance both comfort and softness, seamlessly adapting the design for contemporary wear. Rooted in the elegance of traditional Hanfu, these garments embody a harmonious blend of innovation and cultural heritage.

将古老的蛋壳漆工艺加以创新，应用于家居产品。一件作 品历经 7 道手工工序，每一道工序均需不同手工艺人合力 完成。反复水磨打造出镜面效果，最细的砂纸为 3000 目 砂纸。蛋壳漆的皴裂纹细碎又富于变化，仿宋代瓷器开片 的效果。胎釉浑然一体，表面温润如玉，暖暖含光。
Eggshell Lacquer
Our eggshell lacquer series revives and innovates the ancient technique of eggshell lacquer. This meticulous process involves embedding tiny pieces of eggshell into a lacquer base, creating intricate and stunning patterns. Inspired by Song dynasty porcelain, the eggshell lacquer finish offers a delicate, crackled effect that resembles the fine cracks in old ceramics.

Leather Weaving
Inspired by the intricate structure of Chinese bamboo baskets, we reimagine traditional craftsmanship through the Leather Weaving technique, showcased in the Lan Yue collection of handbags. Crafted from premium full-grain leather, the material is treated for exceptional flexibility and precision, ensuring uniform weaving. The technique draws from Jiangnan’s Kesi silk weaving, creating richly textured, three-dimensional surfaces that evoke the beauty of bamboo craftsmanship. This fusion of classic techniques and modern design represents a timeless and sophisticated aesthetic.
