- Welcome to this afternoon’s matchup between the No. 2 ranked Owens Express women’s basketball team and the visiting Columbus State Cougars (10-12, 6-6 OCCAC) of Columbus, Ohio. Head coach Mike Llanas is 23-3 against Columbus State. They have won seven straight and 18 of the last 19 in the series. Interestingly, though, the one loss represents the last conference loss Owens has experienced, and it came on Feb. 1, 2014 on the road with a 73-67 final. If they 318-96 (.768) 10-12 (.455) should do that, it would break the record set last year. - This year, Owens is scoring a nation best 94.1 PPG and Career OCCAC Record: Career OCCAC Record: allowing just 44.8 PPG, thus outscoring its opponents by 49.3 PPG. They have outscored their opponents by 1,232 138-29 (.826) 6-6 (.500) points, which is 111 more than the total number of points they’ve given up. Their closest win was a 76-55 victory over Cincinnati State on the road Jan. 28. - On top of owning the nation’s top offense, Owens is leading the country in FG made/game (35.9), offensive RPG PPG: Reese 13.8 PPG: Codner-Pinto 22.9 (21.4) and opponents FG percentage (27.8). They 3PT FG%: Cowan 44.5 3PT FG%: Rutter 33.3 are also among the top five in eight other team statistical FT %: Frost 85.7 FT %: Codner-Pinto 75.3 categories. - Individually, Owens has four players ranked among the nation’s best - Ariel Bethea is second in the country in steals per game at 4.9; Essence Cowan is sixth in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage at 44.5; Brenda Pennington is 13th in assists per game at 5.0; and Jeryn Reese is 30th in field goal percentage at 53.5 percent. - In OCCAC play, Owens leads the conference in the following team categories - total points, PPG, FGM/game, FGA/game, 3-pt FGM/game, 3-pt FGA/game, offensive RPG, total RPG, rebounding margin, assists/game, steals/game, blocks/game, PPG allowed, opponents FG percentage and opponents 3-pt FG percentage. They are also second in FG, 3-pt FG and FT percentages. - Owens is now 70-1 at home, including 21 straight wins, since February of 2012. - The magic number for Owens to clinch at least a share of its fifth straight OCCAC championship is two. Thus, any combination of Owens wins or Cincinnati State losses that amount to two does the trick.
