Who we have worked for Education - Health Care UC San Diego - Consulting Executive Engineer, University of California, Irvine Hewitt Hall East Campus Utility Plant (ECUP) Expansion Medical Research Facility and BSL-3 Laboratory San Diego, CA Irvine, CA

UC, San Diego - East Campus Central Plant

Owen is the prime consultant provide full services. We are also collaborating with the design team on the new Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTRI) in East Campus. The goal of the ECUP expansion is to provide required chilled water and emergency power utilities to the new CTRI building as well as other nonOSHPD buildings on UCSD’s East Campus. This project will also include a 3,500 gsf addition to the ECUP building to support the new chiller and emergency power generator. The Henrikson Owen team is also providing sustainability options to the university with a goal of LEED Silver certification through the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The project will also be required to meet the minimum state requirements for CALGreen Building Code and Title 24.

UCI - Hewitt Hall Medical Research Facility & BSL-3 Lab

Owen was the Structural Engineer on this design/build, with Hensel Phelps Construction and Carrier Johnson Architects. Hewitt Hall is a 76,905 gsf new laboratory building, which consists of a 3 story building with a basement. This project received the award for 2008 Outstanding Building - Post Secondary Division, American School & University, Architectural Portfolio.

University of California, Irvine - Medical Center Clinical Laboratory Replacement Building Irvine, CA

Owen provided structural engineering services for the new LEED Gold design/build Clinical Laboratory Replacement Building (CLRB) at the UCI Medical Center. This five-story, poured-in-place concrete structure is comprised of 8” flat slab concrete floors and 20” square concrete columns providing the bulk of the gravity load UCI - Stem Cell Research Center Building resisting system. The on grade floor will consist of a 5” concrete slab supported on compacted fill. UCI - Herbert Gavin Eye Institute

Owen was again teamed with Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company and DES Architects on this $30 million dollars design build project for the University of California, Irvine. Structural engineering services were provided for the newest and most state-of-the-art eye care and treatment facility to be built on the West Coast. The Gavin Herbert Eye Institute’s mission is to develop educational programs, technologies and clinical solutions that enhance visual health and performance for people in Orange County, the nation and the world through cooperation with medical professionals, industry and the community.

UCI - Social and Behavorial Sciences Building

Owen was the structural engineer of record for the new Social and Behavioral Sciences Building at UCI. This was Owen’s eighth design-build project at UCI Irvine. The 5-level building will provide 64,100 sq ft of space for instructional and research laboratories and faculty and administrative offices for UCI’s Schools of Social Sciences and Social Ecology. It will also include 14,750 sq ft of flexible office and dry laboratory space. The structure is cast in place concrete. The lateral force resisting system is a dual system with ductile moment frames and shear walls. The floor system features castin-place post-tensioned floors.

Owen was part of a design-build team that under contract with UC Irvine provided a six-story LEED Gold building that expanded the existing ICS campus and increased general assignment classroom space by more than 46,000 sf. The design of this facility was intended to enhance interaction between faculty and students and to create a progressive learning environment. Designed with flexibility in mind, the plans were outlined to accommodate ICS growing faculty, staff and student body populations.

UCI - Natural Sciences Unit 2

Owen was the Structural Engineer on this new LEED $44 million, five-level, laboratory facility design-build project with 136,380 sf of space. The building consists of poured in place concrete with five levels of office space and four levels of wet lab space.

Owen is the Structural Engineer of Record on this design-build, with Hensel Phelps Construction and Carrier Johnson Architects. The 58,000 gsf design-build project consists of a three story building and a full builtout basement that functions as a research laboratory and office area with a large three story high atrium at the entry. The lateral force resisting system consists of a combination of cast-in-place reinforced concrete and reinforced unit masonry (CMU) shear walls and reinforced concrete roof and floor diaphragms. The vertical load supporting system consists of cast-in-place concrete slab and beam, floors and roof supported on cast-in-place concrete columns.

Owen provided parking consulting and structural engineering services as part of the design/build team for this project. Floor System: One-way post tensioned slabs supported by post-tensioned Cunningham beams at 20 feet on center. Lateral Support: provided by cast-in-place moment frame system at exterior in each direction. Structure: Aside from foundation, structure is 4000 psi concrete using hardrock aggregate. Supported on conventional spread footings

Owen is the structural engineer of record for this $50 million design-build lab project at UCI. This is Owen’s seventh design-build project at UCI. The 122,000 sq ft building includes laboratory space, lecture, and office. The structuture is cast in place concrete. The lateral force resisting system is a dual system with ductile moment frames and shear walls.

Owen was selected to provide parking consulting and structural engineering services for the design of this 4-level, l,800-stall Parking Structure. This Parking Structure is used to accommodate the University’s new Ambulatory Care Center, that is located adjacent to the site. The 275,000 square foot facility includes the design of a landscaped corridor that establishes a strong connection between both complexes while encouraging campus pedestrian activities.

Owen was hired by USC to provide structural engineering services as part of the design/build team. The project involved a comparative cost analysis which determined that cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete was the most economical and practical alternative. Parking Structure I is a seven-level, three bay structure containing approximately 1,153 parking stalls. Parking Structure I is designed above grade with major entrances from 37th Place and Flower Street.

Owen teamed with Bomel Construction in a design-build competition for Build LACCD at the Harbor Campus. Owen provided Architectural, Structural, MEP and Civil schematic design drawings for two parking structures on the campus. Both structures meet LEED standards and have photovoltaic panels integrated into the roofing system.

Owen was commissioned by the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), to provide full-service Architecture and Engineering Design Services for this project at Los Angeles Southwest College. This Type-1 Construction Project utilizes poured-inplace concrete columns, and poured-in-place concrete post-tensioned beams and slabs.

LA Mission College

Owen provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering. This new 73,000 SF three story building houses the culinary arts department and Campus book store. Relevant project features include a kitchen demonstration lecture hall which has extensive audio/ visual equipment, computer facilities and television screens for students to observe the instructing chef. There are also 5,000 SF of lecture classrooms with auditorium seating and projections screens and 3,000 SF of faculty and staff offices. The building is designed to minimize energy consumption. Los Angeles Southwest College

The Los Angeles Southwest College Design-Build Package 2 consists of the upgrade and modernization of three main campus buildings, the School of Science and Math building, Fitness and Wellness Center, and the Cox and Little Theater Building that have been in use for decades. The package also includes a new 650-car parking structure on the East side of the campus. BFL Owen is the structural engineer of record for the designbuild team providing structural evaluation, analysis and seismic strengthening engineering solutions.

Channel Islands University, Camarillo, CA

Owen provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services including studies, design and construction administration for the California State University, Fullerton Cogeneration and Central Plant Retrofit Project. The design-build project included evaluation of the entire chilled water (CHW) and heating hot water (HHW) distribution and pumping systems, as well as other miscellaneous studies, for compatibility with the new Tri-Gen plant.

The Cox Little Theater is to become a state of the art facility centrally located at the heart of the Los Angeles Southwest College campus. BFL Owen’s structural team is currently providing a complete analysis of the building’s main lateral force resisting system. The structural program includes seismic strengthening of the theater building and a full building lateral upgrade that meets current code requirements and architectural program standards with careful attention to acoustical and vibration aspects that may affect the theater’s interior space. All of this is being done in conjunction with a complete modernization of the theater’s functionality.

CSU, Los Angeles - New Student Union

Owen’s Structural and Electrical Engineers were part of the design-build team for this new $31 million project at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA). The new 100,587 square foot four-story building replaced an existing aging facility that did not meet current seismic standards. The CSULA New Student Union is a four-story steel building above a subterranean level. The structure is designed for compliance with 2001 edition of California Building Code. A Special Moment Resisting Frame system with Side Plate connections has been used to resist seismic and wind loads. In 2009, the Student Union received the DBIA Merit Award for the design-build construction of a Public Sector Building over $25 million.

This 273,000 square foot, 14 story, 372 suite, full -service high-rise hotel includes an atrium, meeting and conference space, lounge and restaurant facility, gift shop, deli, and back-of house functions and spaces. Supporting the hotel is a three-level, 350 space, subterranean parking structure. The project is located in an area with a variety of office, retail, and serviceoriented businesses. Buildings in the area range from low-rise office and commercial uses to mid to high rise office buildings and hotels.

Owen provided a comprehensive array of engineering design services for The Embassy Suites Hotel, La Jolla. The Embassy Suites San Diego La Jolla hotel is located in the University Towne Centre area across from Westfield Shopping town - UTC and close to the campus of the University of California at San Diego - UCSD, La Jolla Cove, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, the La Jolla Playhouse, the Miramar Marine Air Station This all-suite full-service upscale hotel is just a short drive from the San Diego International Airport - Lindbergh Field, Seaworld San Diego, the San Diego Convention Center, the Balboa Park Museums, Petco Park - home of the San Diego Padres, Qualcomm Stadium - home of the San Diego Chargers, the renowned San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Wild Animal Park and Legoland California.

The Embassy Suites Anaheim North hotel is located only minutes from the Disneyland Resort, Downtown Disney, Disney’s California Adventure, the Anaheim Amtrak Station, the Angel Stadium of Anaheim - Grove of Anaheim, the Crystal Cathedral, the campus of Chapman University, the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace. It is a seven story full-service upscale all-suite hotel. Guests of the Embassy Suites Anaheim North hotel stay in spacious two-room suites that include high-speed internet access, fitness center, and meeting rooms.

Hilton Hotel San Gabriel, CA

The company’s economical designs are the backbone of many of its medium- to high-rise structures, such as the 570,000 square foot Santa Monica Beach Hotel in Southern California. It has 340 guest rooms with views, including 19 suites, spa treatment including pool, dry sauna and Jacuzzi. OWEN’s value engineering design of this hotel saved the owner $2 million in construction costs. An alternative foundation system and an OWENmodeled shear wall layout provided a very strong frame for Santa Monica’s earthquake-prone location.

This is the first major hotel and retail development in the China Town strip of the Los Angeles area. A $50 million, five-star, 222 room hotel, including 27 suites with two restaurants, a banquet room, ballroom, and a two-story retail wing. The project also involves a concrete bridge wash over the San Gabriel River channel for a parking structure. The Hilton also has the largest catering and private dining facilities in the area, with a 12,524 square foot ballroom and eight private dining rooms (breakout rooms) which can be divided into twelve rooms. A rooftop garden provides space for casual refreshments, receptions or spectacular wedding ceremonies.

Park at Harbor View

This $200 million mixed-use hotel and garden plaza complex is comprised of six residential buildings, ranging in height from 6 to 11 stories each, two 26 story condominium towers, and one 25 story hotel tower with large garden and walkway retail plaza. The entire site is situated over a three-story parking garage of approximately 324,000 square feet totaling 3,200 spaces. The project overlooks Queensbay in the Long Beach harbor. This project is one of the largest mixed-use projects in southern California and has substantial site constraints, including ground water, existing historical buildings on and adjacent to the site, as well as being close to a major active fault system.

Owen provided full service design and engineering of this 18-story tower project, which consists of 13 stories of residential condominiums on top of a five-level parking structure, located in the heart of San Francisco. The first and second floors are shops and offices and the remaining 13 floors are residential units, consisting of one- to three-bedroom condominium/apartments, including two penthouses on the top level.

Portola is an eight-level, 80,000 square foot mixeduse development project, comprised of 15 luxury condominium units with two and three bedrooms with two and three bathrooms, four street-level live/work loft units, four office/professional suites/retail and a two-level subterranean parking structure of more than 25,000 square feet. The entire site is situated upon an approximately 15,000 square foot sloped lot, located within the Downtown Redevelopment District of Oceanside, California.

Westfield Topanga Plaza Mall Expansion and Parking Structure Canoga Park, CA

Owen provided design and engineering services for this prominent mixed-use high-rise facility in San Francisco, California, consists of apartment units and condominium units with an underground parking structure and front corner office and retail spaces. The structure consists of pour-in-place concrete with post-tensioned floors and concrete moment frame and sheer wall systems. This structure also has underground parking.

Westfield Topanga Plaza Mall and Parking Structure

The Westfield Topanga mall is one of the largest in the United States. This project consists of over 1 million square feet of upscale expansion. There are 125 tenants on two floors with the new expansion adding 100 more. The $2 billion dollar project with a $500,000 facelift provided upscale dining options with cafe-style dining terraces and full-service concierge and acres of covered parking. Also included is a Westfield Play Town for children, a family lounge and an indoor carousel.

This new professional office building consists of two three-story class “A” office buildings. Both buildings total 150,000 square feet. The construction of this concrete office building was performed by McCarthy Construction. The building design features an elegant exterior of architectural/ structural concrete. The structural system consists of an exterior and interior cast-in-place concrete moment frame and post-tensioned concrete flat-plate floor slab. The foundation system consists of pad foundations for the above buildings.

Owen is the Structural Engineer of Record on this 129,000 square foot Class “A” office complex and parking structure, located in Diamond Bar. It includes a 5,000 square foot day care center and an adjacent parking structure for 570 spaces. The office portion consists of three stories with a concrete moment frame exterior and concreteposttensioned slab supported on intermediate beams and columns. The foundation system consists of pile foundation.

Scripps Medical Center Innovation Parking Structure San Diego, CA

This is a two-story steel frame building with one level of concrete parking garage below. Metal decks and steel frames are used to carry the vertical loads. Steel chevron braces are used to resist the lateral forces. The one-level subterranean parking is constructed with masonry walls on the perimeter and post-tensioned concrete slab on top. It has a conventional pad, and continuous footings used to support columns and walls

Scripps Medical Center Innovation Parking Structure

Owen was awarded the structural engineering and architectural design service contract for Scripps Medical Center parking structure in San Diego, CA. The structure will be comprised of poured-in-place post tensioned concrete and will contain ductile frame lateral systems. The Innovation Parking Structure was developed by Kilroy Realty Corporation to provide support parking for a new Medical Office Facility located at the corner of Innovation Drive and Rancho Carmel Drive. This posttension concrete structure will house approximately 633 vehicles.


Transportation / Public Works Los Angeles County Metropolitan Metro Division 3 Parking Structure Transportation Authority, Blue Line Station Los Angeles, CA Refurbishments – 21 Stations Los Angeles, CA

Design/Build team of Amoroso-Owen was contracted by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) for the Metro Blue Line project involving refurbishments of the entire group of 21 Metro Blue Line stations. Owen Group, as a design partner to Amoroso, is providing full design and ADA accessibility/compliance for all the 21 Blue Line stations and rail platforms. These refurbishments will upgrade the 20+ year old stations with a renewed look, as well as sustainable technology.

MTA Support Facilities and Bus Transit Center Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (METRO) selected Owen control teamed design services to provide a Design/Build for 2-level parking structure expansion and concrete pavement repair at Division 3, located at 630 W. Avenue 28, Los Angeles, CA 90065. The scope of work for Owen consists of engineering design, and construction administration necessary to complete the new parking structure expansion, renovation work according to Metro’s requirements. The new parking structure expansion was designed and constructed as a cast-in-place and posttensioned concrete structure at the East end of the existing parking structure. The parking structure and foundations are designed in accordance with the requirements of International Building Code (18G) and the recommendations from the geotechnical report. The concrete pavement repair was also designed and constructed in accordance with the requirements shown on the performance drawings provided by Metro. Metro provided construction oversight services.

MTA Support Facilities and Bus Transit Center

Owen provided parking consulting and Engineering Design Services as part of the design/build team for this project. The structure is designed to comply with S-4 occupancy, as an open-air structure per the LA City Building Code. This Type-1 Construction Project utilizes poured-inplace concrete columns, and poured-in-place concrete post-tensioned beams and slabs. The first floor is design for bus transit and upper floors for vehicle parking.

LAX Central Utilities Plant Replacement Project Cooling Towers & Closed Circuit Fluid Coolers Replacements

Owen provided design, plan check approval, bidding assistance, and construction assistance services for the Cooling Tower and Closed Circuit Fluid Coolers (CCFCs) Replacement Project on the top of the LACMTA (Metro) Union Station Gateway (USG) building in downtown Los Angeles. The project was implemented as a Design/ Build project. It consisted of the replacement of four existing twocell, 437-ton, Evapco cooling towers with new, slightly higher capacity BAC cooling towers. It also consisted of the replacement of two existing two-cell 325-ton, Evapco CCFCs with new BAC CCFCs. The work needed to be highly coordinated with the ongoing operations in the 27-story downtown LA high rise building. Staged helicopter lifts of equipment were involved as well.

Owen teamed with Hatch Mott MacDonald as part of preparing the bridging document for the Central Terminal Area (CTA) Central Utilities Plant (CUP) Replacement. The CTA CUP facility has no spare heating and cooling capacity, has reached the end of its useful life, is costly to operate and maintain, and in many cases replacement parts are no longer available. The current CTA CUP operation does not employ the latest economical and efficient technological standards and cannot meet the LAX’s existing heating and cooling demands, let alone expanded demands. Because of these limitations, the existing CTA CUP is being replaced.

Owen is the mechanical, electrical and structural engineer of record for this new 1,900 car, $58 million, five-level parking structure at the Long Beach Airport. Owen won this 1.2 million sf parking structure as part of the ARB team on a nationwide design/build competition for what was to become one of the largest parking structures in California. Originally planned as a 4,000 car facility, the as-built structure has a second phase that will add the additional 1,110 cars in the future.

Owen provided structural engineering services for this high profile, publicly funded project in San Jose, CA. Floors: framed with long span post-tensioned beam systems and post-tensioned concrete slabs resulting in a virtually crack-free deck Lateral support: cast-in-place shear walls Concrete is compressed with post-tensioning to reduce temperature reinforcement and compensate for tensile force due to shrinkage and creep.


International / Federal Schlumberger Oil Operations Base Basra, Iraq

Owen teamed with Baghdad-based, design/build construction firm, ALMCO, to implement an oil operations base for Schlumberger in the North Rumayla Oilfield, about 42 kilometers from Basra, Iraq. Owen provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) and structural engineering for the facilities. The scope of facility development entailed the design and construction of a small industrial/residential campus of approximately 160,000 square meters. The campus includes residential accommodations for workers, as well as facilities for food preparation and dining, recreation, ablution and showering, lavatories, medical clinic, religious accommodations, office and administration, support, and safe haven. Industrial facilities include maintenance workshops, oil equipment service facilities, wash bays, labs, power generation, water and wastewater treatment, tanks, and other allied facilities. The campus is surrounded by a security berm, walls, fencing, and other security facilities. Construction on the project was completed in 2011

Shell Oil and Gas Operations Complex

Owen was retained by ALMCO, a Baghdad Iraq-based design/build construction firm, to design the Shell Gas Iraq KAZ oil and gas operations complex in Khor Al Zubair, Iraq (southern Iraq). It consists of a wide variety of facilities for worker accommodations and other functions. The accommodations buildings include 13 residential buildings. The other buildings in the Shell Gas Iraq KAZ oil and gas operations complex include a variety of buildings that are typical of this type of industrial community. These include main office/security, kitchen and dining facility, medical clinic, recreation/gym facility, camp administration office, laundry, mosque, guard towers, and security perimeter. MEP design, IT design and structural design for all buildings covers HVAC, controls, domestic cold water, domestic hot water, waste, vent, plumbing fixtures, electrical power, lighting, data and voice communications systems, and building structures.

Owen provided full design services for the air traffic control tower at the Taji Air Base in Iraq. Our scope of work involved architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and civil engineering design services. This project was delivered using the design-build method.

Owen provided electrical engineering design services for a new maintenance building in Salman Pak, Iraq. This project was delivered using the design-build method. The project is a vehicle maintenance complex, which consists of a maintenance garage, warehouses, barracks, ablution/laundry facilities, power house, and a fuel station.

US Army Limited Fueling Stations

Owen provided the mechanical design work that included fueling equipment, piping, and control systems for the fueling stations in Tallil and Numaniyah, Iraq. The fueling stations each consist of seven 100,000 liter of mogas tanks, seventeen 100,000 liter of diesel tanks, two 50,000 liter kerosene tanks, two 10,000 liter oil tanks, and associated piping and fueling equipment. Both projects were delivered using the design-build method.

Travis Air Force Base Visiting Quarters Fairfield, CA

Owen was selected to perform full-service engineering and architecture services for the design-build construction of a new visiting quarter’s facility at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA. The Travis Visiting Quarters is a four-story U-shaped building divided into two wings and a center lobby, administration offices, and maintenance rooms. The 350-room, Visiting Quarters includes site improvement, utility services and all other required improvements. The U-shaped plan had structural plan irregularities; therefore the design utilized the dynamic analysis procedure of the code to arrive with base shear designing the lateral systems.

Owen was contracted by NAVFAC Southwestern Division San Diego to preform many bridging and scoping document for Design-build project in various Naval & Marine bases throughout the NAVFAC Southwestern Division facilities. These projects included for energy upgrade to new facilities.

Owen provided structural engineering design services for a design/build project of an 11-mile viaduct using an Incremental Launch System in Taipei, Taiwan. The project was done in two segments. The first segment was with an Incremental Launch System and the second segment was with moving travelers. The project was completed two months ahead of schedule.
