fter enjoying the summer, achieving your golden tan, sipping gin and jumping in and out of the pool, it’s time to repair summer damage and prepare for the colder months.

Yes, I know you’ve also survived school holidays, sunburn and insect bites but it sounds less glamorous for a beauty page!

Whatever the reasons for the damage, we all want our lovely skin restored and, ideally, a smooth, flawless complexion - there is nothing quite like it for a youthful glow. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, girls, but in order to achieve this we must put in some effort!

However, this is lovely pampering effort…

You probably already cleanse your skin both morning and evening. Applying your favourite serums, eye creams, moisturisers and sun blocks are next in your routine. And then, of course, you need to exfoliate about twice a week to eliminate dead skin. After all, there is no point in smoothing your treasured lotions and potions onto a layer of grime and dead skin cells.

If possible, to complete the regime you should aim to have a facial about every four weeks. A professional facial is the best treatment to go for as your beauty therapist will analyse your skin and advise you of the best action for your specific skin type, taking into consideration your long term goals which could be to target lines and wrinkles, sun damage and pigmentation, dryness, dehydration, spots and

acne or simply to have a really professional deep cleanse.

What is a facial treatment?

A facial is a procedure involving a variety of skin treatments including cleanse and tone, exfoliation, steam, extraction, creams, lotions, facial masks, peels, and massage.

There are different kinds of masks for different purposes: deep-cleansing by penetrating the pores; healing acne scars or hyperpigmentation; or brightening for a gradual illumination of the skin tone.

Some masks are designed to dry or solidify on the face, almost like plaster; others just remain wet. The perceived effects of a facial mask treatment include revitalising, healing or refreshing. They may yield temporary or longterm benefits depending on environmental, dietary and other skincare factors.

The facials that we perform in the salon use products with a high percentage of active ingredients not available to the consumer over the counter although you can carry out a home facial using pre-blended facial masks; these are readily available in most skincare shops or from your local salon. Or try some homemade ones from the ingredients of your store cupboard!

The basic goals of facials are the same whether the treatment is professional or home-based: to deeply cleanse, nourish and hydrate the skin.

Food Beetroot Risotto A vibrant autumnal dish Serves 4

1 onion, finely chopped 3 celery stalks, finely sliced 2 tbsp olive oil 500g fresh beetroot, peeled and diced

3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 3 sprigs fresh thyme 300g risotto rice 1 litre vegetable stock salt and black pepper

75g parmesan, grated 30g butter, cubed 100g hard goat’s cheese 50g walnut pieces, chopped

Begin by gently frying the onion and celery in the olive oil in a large saucepan. When soft add the beetroot, garlic and thyme leaves and continue to cook until tender.

Turn up the heat, add the rice and stir to coat in the oil. Add the stock a ladleful at a time, stirring continuously until the rice is cooked through with a little bite. You might not need all the stock.

Season to taste.

Turn off the heat and stir in the parmesan and butter. Leave to sit with the lid on for 5 minutes.

Stir again and divide into bowls. Crumble the goat’s cheese and scatter on top with the walnuts.

Travel writer and blogger Katie Gregory stayed at the stylish serviced apartments. Here’s what she thought…

E

ver stayed in an aparthotel? I hadn’t, until I arrived at the new Wilde Aparthotel on London’s Strand a few weeks ago. The clue is in the name when it comes to these apartmenthotel hybrids, which are better known as serviced apartments and popular with business travellers.

But the Wilde promised something a little different – from intelligent in-room tech to Oscar Wildeinspired interiors – so we popped in to have a look around.

The aparthotel concept: local living with peace of mind

Arriving through the building’s big black doors on Adam Street, which is about 20 seconds off The Strand, we found two touch-screens to check ourselves in. There’s a member of staff on-hand here 24 hours, so you get hotel-style security, but it’s all very informal. There’s no bellboy or sharp-suited concierge in sight, just a friendly lady who helped us check in via a staff computer hidden in the wall and chatted to us about where to eat that night.

The thinking behind the property, which is developed by Dublin-based company, Staycity, and the first of several Wilde properties they’re due to open in the UK and Europe, is to bridge the gap between an Airbnb and a luxury hotel.

It’s a taste of local living for people who want that residential feel – like you’ve got your very own London bolthole – but with an added dose of

Speaking of which, the kitchenette is one of the best I’ve seen. While you’re probably not going to be rustling up a Sunday roast, there’s enough to cook a fry-up or a simple dinner – especially if you’re staying for longer than a night. And quirky nods to Oscar Wilde’s writing crop up everywhere from the scripts on the bedside tables to the wry quotes on the mugs, but because they’re delivered like a subtle wink rather than a shouty monologue, nothing about it feels themed.

The building has 106 rentable rooms, and we made our way up to ours on the second floor via the lift. The corridors are all gloomy black walls and carpets – a huge contrast to the apartments, which are as bright and airy as it gets. Our room was a Wilde Superior Studio, which means a huge portion of it is taken up by floor-to-ceiling windows, including one that curves around the side of the building, right in front of the bed. We pulled back the blinds to reveal a dream view of London’s red buses and black cabs zipping up and down The Strand, and watched a thunderstorm light up the sky above the Adelphi Theatre that night.

Design-led interiors with added quirks

Décor-wise, this place manages to hit a balance between sharp styling and comfort. The phrase ‘design-led’ comes up a lot on the Wilde Aparthotel’s site, and while it’s true, you don’t get the feeling you’re in someone else’s idea of interior-design heaven. White and slate walls, light oak kitchenettes and grey-green soft furnishings create a smart, muted palette that’s not trying too hard. The design-led bit comes in the form of intelligent in-room technology – AKA sleek touch-

London on your doorstep

As for location, London accommodation doesn’t come much more central if you want to be in the heart of theatreland. Covent Garden, Soho, Trafalgar Square, Embankment and Charing Cross are all within a couple of minutes’ walk, so you’ve got pubs, shops, restaurants and theatres on your doorstep. And if you fancy carrying on the Oscar Wilde theme, The Vaudeville Theatre is just over the road and currently showing its Oscar Wilde season until 20 October.

We spent the afternoon wandering around London in the sunshine until we eventually settled on somewhere for dinner. The next morning, we tucked in to an epic cooked breakfast at Art Decostyled Smith & Wollensky in the Adelphi building over the road, then walked over the bridge to the South Bank before heading home. If all aparthotels are like this one, I think I’ve found my new favourite way to travel. But I’m pretty sure this place has something extra-special, and I’ll be seeking out the Wilde name specifically next time I book.

o our wonderful summer is over, we are way into autumn and the prospect of a long winter is just around the corner.

But don’t let me be the bearer of bad tidings.

There’s a great way you can lift your spirits and wake up to a positive outlook every day.

The answer is… exercise.

It really doesn’t matter what form the exercise takes - from a brisk walk to swimming to a game of badminton. It’s all good…

It’s a known fact that exercise leads to the release of endorphins, which make you happier. They create the slightly buzzy feeling you get immediately after working out and the world just seems a better place than it did half an hour before.

Endorphins are produced in your brain, spinal cord and other areas of your body. They are then released when a message is sent from the brain to reduce the perception of pain – acts like a sedative. The result is you feel great, a reaction which has been compared to the effect of morphine. However, the big difference is you won’t have a problem with addiction or dependency. Some runners I’ve

spoken to have mentioned feeling euphoric or high after exercise and tend to have a more positive and energising outlook on life.

Endorphins also help balance out the effect of mental illness and any stress that you may be feeling. You may have had a terrible day, but as soon as you start to exercise your mind wanders off and you start to think about the good bits in your life and don’t dwell on the bad stuff. Exercise can also ward off depression and anxiety.

There have been multiple studies on the longlasting positive effects of exercise covering mood and behaviour. Some of the greatest effects have been seen in older patients who may be at risk of dementia. The bottom line is exercise is good for everything from your body to your brain.

One of the most enjoyable ways to get happy and fit quickly is to join one of my group sessions in Harrold-Odell Country Park. These take place every Saturday at 9.30am - see you outside the Dragonfly café.

How can you help?

Citizens Advice Bedford (CAB) is a free, independent, impartial and confidential advice organisation accessible to all in Bedford Borough. Last year, CAB saw over 8,600 clients with a variety of issues notably around benefits, employment, debt, immigration, housing and consumer problems. CAB assisted these clients by offering information and advice to help them resolve the problems they were facing.

Our advice and information service is mainly delivered by a team of fully trained volunteers and without them we would be unable to provide our service in the way that we do. Our volunteers have different backgrounds and levels of experience all with different motives as to why they decided to join us: for some, they chose to volunteer to add some structure to their week after they had retired; for others, volunteering is a way to develop their skills and something which they can do around family commitments.

Nevertheless, despite their initial reasons for joining, they all had one aim – to be able to make a positive contribution to other people’s lives and to help reduce similar client issues from reoccurring.

Volunteering offers you the opportunity to gain lots of new transferable skills and for those who are looking for paid work, it’s an excellent opportunity to stand out from the crowd.

All of our volunteers undertake a highly respected structured training programme exposing them to a wide range of core

workplace activities including: communication, confidentiality, time management and using your common sense to be able to assist clients in the best possible way. As well as this, they receive dedicated supervision and support from a team of supervisors and there is always room for personal development.

Could you join them?

We do not look for any previous experience or particular skills. To become a CAB volunteer you just need to have an open mind, be a good listener, be IT literate and have good written and spoken English. The only requirement is that volunteers must be able to offer a minimum of 6 hours per week during our opening times.

Bring fragrance, warmth and light into your garden during cold or dreary days with winterflowering viburnum.

R

esilient to frost, rain and snow, winterflowering viburnum is invaluable for lifting our sprits during winter with welcome scent and flowers when there is very little to admire in the garden.

These evergreen or deciduous shrubs, which are fully hardy, have fragrant clusters of cream, pink or white flowers on bare branches or in flat heads among leaves. Viburnum can reach a height of 3m and a spread of 2m.

To make the most of the wonderfully scented flowers plant in a moist, welldrained border close to an entrance or path in sun or partial shade. Or set one in a border with other winter-flowering shrubs, plants with berries and evergreens to give the perfect background to these amazing blooms. Make sure you can see the flowers from your windows.

Viburnum is easy to care for. All you need to do is trim back any untidy shoots after flowering. You can cut out older branches if the plant is getting too dense to encourage more growth of the young wood that will bear more flowers. Once it is established, you could use your viburnum as a frame for a clematis to romp over so that you have flowers all year round. The plant will. however, produce flowers most abundantly during mild spells. Display some sprigs in your house; the flowers will last a long time.

All the deciduous forms look lovely with early bulbs, hellebores and mahonia. One of my favourites is ‘Dawn’. Its spectacular small clusters of dark pink flowers which fade to white are produced on bare stems from November to February.

Another good choice would be ‘Eve Price’ which flowers from December until April. This variety can also be planted in a container. It has dark evergreen foliage with pink flower buds that open to tiny, starshaped white flowers. These are followed by small dark blue-black fruits.

Another favourite is ‘Gwenllian’. While not quite as compact as ‘Eve Price’, the combination of deep pink buds opening to blushed white flowers followed by generous blue-black berries – often all on the plant at the same time in winter – is eye-catching.

‘Charles Lamont’ is similar to ‘Dawn’ but with brighter pink flowers or try ‘Deben’ which has white flowers flushed faintly with pink. Viburnum grandiflorum, a more compact shrub, also has pink-flushed white flowers from winter to early spring.

Viburnum foetens, a slightly smaller variety, flowers from late autumn through to early spring with pink-tinged white or pure white flowers.

Jobs for October & November Divide campanula, asters, geraniums and phlox now but it is probably best to leave hellebores and peonies alone.

Keep containers going until the first frost. Then plant winterflowering pansies which will flower in mild weather and again in the early spring.

Shorten the long shoots of late-flowering shrubs, such as buddleja davidii, but finish the pruning in the spring.

Plant hyacinths and largeflowered anemones and lift, divide and replant crocosmias.

If the weather is mild your roses will flower well into the autumn so continue to deadhead.

Remove only the flower and not long stemmed sections as in summer.

This is a good time to plant new hardy climbers so that a good root system can develop in warm, moist soil.

Finish planting tulip and hyacinth bulbs in November for flowering in the spring. Lily bulbs can now be planted in pots.

Early winter is the time to prune winter jasmine, ornamental vines and wisteria.

Leave penstemons until the spring, apart from deadheading, as the stems will protect the crowns from the cold.

Lift begonias before the first frost and dahlias and gladioli after the first frost.

T

he puffin is known as the “Clown of the Sea” and I must admit it is quite a comical bird. I am sure most of you reading this will have seen a puffin on TV but I would like to tell you a little bit about my experiences photographing this amazing bird in one of my favourite locations up on Fair Isle (in the Shetlands). They are such fun to photograph that I try and get my “puffin fix” at least once a year.

It’s quite a task getting to Fair Isle. For me it involves a flight to Glasgow, and then another flight to Sumburgh in the Shetlands. From here you have a choice of transport to get over to Fair Isle - a one hour flight on a 6-seater plane or a trip over on the ferry, named the Good Shepherd, which takes a good few hours and can be quite a rough crossing.

Needless to say I always opt for the short flight…

The only place to stay on Fair Isle is the Bird Observatory and this is located within a few minutes walk of the main puffin colonies, so it’s ideal.

The puffins have their burrows (they often use discarded rabbit holes) on the side or just in from the cliff edge. For eight months of the year the puffins stay out at sea but for four months of the year they come back to their breeding grounds. For puffin breeding behaviour, April is a good time to get your images but the iconic image is the photograph of the puffin carrying in sand-eels to the chick that is hidden away in the burrow. Puffins are very social so hundreds of birds may have their burrows almost on top of each other and squabbles can often occur.

This sand eel period is usually in June and July and birds can be seen coming in off the sea and up to the cliffs with tens of sand eels in their beaks, braving the attacks from gulls wanting to steal their catch.

The puffins can be away for many hours looking for the sand eel “hot spots”.

The puffin is the most inquisitive bird I have ever come across. It’s possible to sit next to a colony and have puffins coming so close to you that they tug

at your shoe-laces or investigate your camera so closely that it’s impossible to get a photograph. If you are standing in the way of where they want to cross a pathway they won’t move from their position - they will wait until you move. They are also collectors and love nothing more than taking something unusual down in to the burrow, or they can be seen walking along with a large stick in their beak, or a pretty flower. In fact, the best time to photograph puffins on Fair Isle is when the pretty pink thrift flowers cover the cliff tops and make for beautiful backgrounds.

The puffins always need to be on their toes though as it can be a dangerous place for them up on the cliff tops. The Arctic Skua, or Bonnie as its known, a huge gull, will often attack any unsuspecting puffin.

Quite often the puffins have a guard up on the cliffs and the slightest unusual shadow moving across the cliff top will send them scurrying underground.

There are other more accessible places in the UK to photograph puffins. Day trips are offered to the Farne Islands at Seahouses in Northumbria. Boat trips will take you across to the islands and here you will find hundreds of puffins from April to August, but I find this a much less photogenic location. The plus side is you will also get the chance to photograph many other types of seabirds here as well. If you are over towards the Welsh coast then Skomer is another great place. Day trips here are also available and if you are really keen you can stay on the island at the hostel for a couple of nights. Whilst the accommodation is pretty basic if you do stay it gives you a great opportunity to get your sunrise and sunset puffin shots.

If you ever get the opportunity to visit the puffin colonies in the UK then please take advantage and go. You will find that you get bitten by the puffin bug and you will want to keep returning just like me. A year without a “puffin fix”? Well, I just can’t imagine that now… I hope that you have enjoyed seeing a few of my puffin images and that it may have inspired you to seek out a trip up to the Farnes or Skomer even if you can’t make it all the way up to Fair Isle.

Kennel Cough Infectious tracheobronchitis or, more commonly, kennel cough is the general infection of the canine respiratory tract (ie nose, throat and lungs).

When I see patients for their annual preventative healthcare exam and vaccinations, more often than not clients decline the kennel cough vaccine on the grounds that their pet is not boarding. Here’s the thing, yes kennel cough can be caught in kennels but dogs out on walks, at puppy parties, or visiting friends can also catch kennel cough. This is because the infection is transmitted in shared air spaces and objects like bowls and toys. Quite often we see dogs present with kennel cough, not from those having stayed at a boarding establishment but from those going about their daily routine.

Kennel cough is caused by a number of viruses and bacteria. It can take up to 14 days for an animal to shown signs of infection. The most obvious sign is a harsh, hacking cough - some say it sounds like a goose honk! Sometimes they cough so hard it can cause them to bring up white phlegm from retching. They may also be a bit off colour and have a temperature. Less common is: a runny nose, weepy eyes and sneezing. It is rare for kennel cough to cause dogs to be very poorly but it has been known to be develop to fatal bronchopneumonia in puppies, elderly and/or ill, weak dogs.

Your vet will use the clinical history and symptoms, alongside a clinical exam, to determine if your pet has kennel cough. Swabs can be taken to

determine the exact virus or bacteria present in case of resistance to treatment. X-rays of the chest may also be taken to determine the severity of the disease and to rule out other causes of coughing.

Treatment is very simple. Mild cases can recover fully on their own whilst others may require antiinflammatories and/or antibiotics to help the body remove the infection, which can take up to 6 weeks. It is important to remember the disease is highly contagious and so your dog should be kept apart from other dogs during this time.

To prevent kennel cough, vaccination is important and even more important for the young, old or weak. Several of the viruses that can contribute to the disease are covered in their annual vaccinations such as canine adenovirus type 2, canine distemper and sometimes canine parainfluenza virus. The most common offending bacteria is Bordatella bronchiseptica, which is given in the kennel cough vaccine. The vaccine lasts 12 months and can be given from as young as three weeks old. Vaccination does not guarantee prevention of kennel cough but it will reduce the severity of the symptoms and reduce viral and bacterial shedding meaning the dog will be less contagious.

Turvey History Society awarded National Lottery support

hanks to money raised by National Lottery players Turvey History Society has received £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Together with a grant of £2000 from Turvey Parish Council, it will enable the society to develop a local history website and walking tour app, featuring village voices.

The project will stimulate research into the rich history of Turvey, whilst also ensuring the future storage of any ‘history in the making’. The new site will feature a timeline, an interactive map, and the story of Turvey through its buildings, landscape and lives of its people. Turvey is a village rich in heritage dating back to the Beaker people, and there is great interest in its history.

A community play (www. bellsofturvey.co.uk) using archival research into the village in the nineteenth century was enthusiastically received by sell-out audiences. However, historical material is widely dispersed and there is no single reliable information source.

Some documentary evidence relating to the village’s past has sadly been lost, for lack of a place to save it.

By involving the local people in researching and documenting their village’s past, Turvey History Society aims to give ownership of Turvey’s past to the community, and to enrich their understanding of where they live.

I qualified with a BSc Honours degree in Speech and Language Pathology and Audiology from the University of Cape Town. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, Royal College of Speech and Language therapists, and Association of Speech and Language therapists in Independent Practice.

In addition to four years’ full time training, I have 24 years’ experience in the field.

What does your job involve?

I work with children from eighteen months through to young adults in their early twenties. I work with the whole child/teen/young adult and I have a specialist interest in neurodevelopmental disorders. The range of difficulties that I see for assessment and therapy, or involves management with other professionals (such as a sensory integration occupational therapist, educational psychologist, paediatrician, psychiatrist, consultant audiological physician, and consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon) includes: 1. Can you explain about assessments and therapy?

Depending on the age and symptoms the client is presenting, assessments can be half an hour to an hour. If a full assessment for language and other complex issues is required, then assessment can be 2.5 to 3 hours. Based on the assessment, therapy targets are set for each client and their sessions may be weekly or fortnightly for half an hour or an hour.

This is usually during school term time. Costs vary according to what is required.

Where and when do you work?

I have two therapy rooms (one play room for younger children and another room for older students) within Emmaus village in Carlton. I have been based there for the last 10 years. I see clients there Monday to Thursday, and all day Saturday. I also work in schools Tuesdays to Thursdays. I am available to do school training, and meetings, on a Monday and Friday. I do assessments in London as required.

What is the best part of your job?

It is how the client responds to therapy and the change for them makes such an impact on their social-emotional wellbeing and behaviour, education, and for life. I love hearing how they have continued to happily progress through school with their GCSEs or A Levels, and go on to college, university or work successfully.

From High-School Dropout To 6-Figure Business Coach Mindy Paul: Bedford’s Own Success Story

hen we think of the term ‘highschool dropout’, we rarely imagine an international business man, but Mindy Paul is just that. Having spent his childhood years growing up in Bedford, he was motivated from a young age.

Mindy Paul, International Business Man For the past few years you have been changing the lives of hundreds of people around the world with your teachings and experience of how you were able to go from a high-school dropout to a very successful entrepreneur, building multiple 6-figure businesses at an early age. You have a powerful story. Can you share some of your biggest lessons with our readers?

I always believed that more was possible. However, I used to think, “There must be a secret!” I knew I had to get guidance from someone who knew the science behind success. I understood the idea that there must be a solution, a system of some sort that, when followed, would guarantee a certain amount of ‘success’. I realised that just as we take our car to the mechanic to be fixed, I needed to get myself to the mechanic of success. I had a hunger for it, a fire burning within me, so I kicked myself out of my comfort zone and got myself around the right people.

The number one thing you need to do is make the decision. You’ve got to be ready to do whatever it takes to reach your dreams. I committed myself to proving my naysayers wrong by going all in, and I made the conscious decision not to let my lack of ‘experience’ hold me back. You need that winner’s mentality! This entails knowing who you are and where you want to go. What’s your vision?

Write it down! We spend more time planning our next holiday than we do mapping our next steps in life. When you make it your mission to refine your vision, you’ll find clarity fast.

From your experience, what do you believe separates those who succeed with their goals from those who don’t?

If you don’t have a goal, you’re essentially lost.

Your goal is the destination you can set your sights on and, once you have that, you just need to follow the map that will get you there! Imagine a captain of a ship navigating through the seas with no map.

Sooner or later, the ship will find itself lost and lacking direction. The same applies to business — and to succeed in business, you need direction. It all begins with a defined goal.

I know you’ve been working closely with Bob Proctor, international speaker, author and star of the movie ‘The Secret’, as part of his inner circle for quite some time now. How has he impacted your life?

Since meeting Bob Proctor, everything in my life has changed.

I have spent well over £150,000 hiring mentors, coaches and attending seminars all around the world, but Bob Proctor’s teachings single-handedly changed my life and business, which is why I’m so passionate about educating business owners on his material. I went to him because he’s the authority when it comes to human potential, and I now have the honour of working with him on a 1-1 basis. He’s helped me scale my business to new, international heights, and he’s also armed me with a wealth of transformational knowledge that I now share with my clients on a daily basis, and the results always excite me.

Having accelerated your growth with the help of one of the world’s top coaches, how do you believe coaching can impact a business’ growth?

The impact is phenomenal but a particular experience with Bob instantly comes to mind.

One time when we were in Toronto together, I was opening up to him about my life story and how I felt I was capable of so much more than I was doing at the time. Bob simply responded, “Mindy, It’s not working your way so why not try it my way? Until you find out that I’m lying and I don’t know what I’m talking about, do exactly as I say because I do know what I’m talking about, and I don’t lie!” Let’s just say I listened to his advice and since that day I haven’t looked back!

We all have huge amounts of potential locked up within us but we also have an abundance of limiting beliefs holding us back. We see ourselves with a limited amount of potential, and this is known as self-image. Most people try to change their results first but, frankly, you can’t change your results permanently until you change your beliefs, and that is done through a proven system that Bob has taught me, and I can teach you.

oadstone is a ferric ferrite made up of mostly rust (Fe2O3) mixed in with Stelios Mores calcites, silicates and quartz plus traces of barium, manganese, nickel and also zinc. At first it is difficult to see why this rusty stone might be considered to be of any special interest, until one realises that it is magnetic.

The first references to loadstone and its magnetic properties go all the way back to 600 BC and the ancient Greek province of Magnesia on Asia Minor, when Thales of Miletus first described stones with magnetic properties found in the region. He called these ‘stones of Magnesia’ also known as Magnetite, and the term gave its name to the physical phenomenon of Magnetism. Around the same time, the method of magnetic induction by which magnetic properties can be transferred from a loadstone to an iron object were also discovered. However it seems that very little was made of this knowledge, and despite many of the philosophers of the age mentioning it in their essays, no explanations were ever suggested.

The first practical use of magnets was by the Chinese in the 12th century who were making and using crude compasses by magnetising iron needles and floating these on water by placing them on corks. This galvanised natural philosophers in Europe such as the French scholar Peter Peregrinus to conduct experiments which successfully described the behaviour of magnetic forces. This work led to the development of compasses which could be relied on for long-distance navigation.

By the late 1500s, the groundbreaking work of the English astronomer and natural philosopher William Gilbert showed that the Earth itself behaved much like a magnet, albeit a very weak one. His published work ‘De Magnete’

confirmed the existence of magnetic polarity and defined the poles of a magnet as North pointing and South pointing, ie. the North and South poles of a magnet. Despite such advances, it was not until the 16th and 17th centuries when protagonists such as Isaac Newton brought about the ‘Age of Enlightenment’ that the understanding of magnetism could progress any further.

During the late 1700s, the German Carl Fredrich Gauss considered the theoretical basis of magnetism introducing the notion of a magnetic flux around a magnet. During the same time in France, Charles Coulomb’s experiment with static electricity and magnetism led him to quantify the force of attraction experienced by two magnets, stipulating that this was the result of their magnetic fields affected by the distance between them. Once again the story of magnetism stalled and it took another 200 years and advances in the understanding of electricity before it could be revisited.

In 1819 Hans Christian Orsted who was a professor at Copenhagen University planned to demonstrate the heating of a straight length of wire by electricity and to demonstrate magnetism using magnets and a compass. It was to be a home demonstration for family and some close friends. As he was setting up these experiments on the limited space of his small desk, he noticed that his compass moved whenever he connected the wire to his battery. This chance discovery linked magnetism to electricity.

Prompted by this, Andre-Marie Ampere in France went on to show how two parallel wires carrying an electric current created a magnetic force, and that this drew them together if the current flowed in the same direction and forced them apart when the current flowed in opposite directions.

He determined how this force was affected by the distance between them and the electrical currents flowing in each.

At this juncture it had become apparent that the movement of charge and magnetism were inextricably connected. This began Michael

Magnetism is a common phenomenon which typically occurs weakly in nature and affects our everyday life. Most of our technology relies on some aspect of magnetism, from fridges to mobile phones. The Earth’s magnetic field has protected our planet from being ravaged by particles ejected by the Sun, allowing life to take hold. It seems we owe our very existence to the giant magnet we are living on, so it’s no surprise we have been fascinated by the magic of magnetism since ancient times.

Take the needle and magnetise it by drawing one end of the magnet along its length. Repeat this about 30 times.Take the spoon and see if the needle is attracted to it. If not, continue rubbing until it is. Next place the needle on one side of the cork and the pebble on the other and hold them in place using the rubber band. Finally half fill the bowl with water and place the cork into it. You have made yourself a Chinese compass.

Now take the magnet and move it close to the bowl. You should see the cork move. Finally take the bowl outside. If you walk and turn gently you should see the needle pointing in the same direction. Happy exploring!

Around the same time, prompted by Faraday’s observations into how magnetism affected light, an as yet unknown Scottish scientist and mathematician James Clerk Maxwell started to work on the idea of an electromagnetic wave.

He postulated that light was essentially the result of an oscillating electric field which was counterbalanced by an oscillating magnetic field perpendicular to it. The

unexpected outcome from this theoretical work was that the electromagnetic wave was shown to move at the speed of light. It linked the physical phenomena of magnetism and electricity to radio waves, visible light and x-rays. This revelation formed the basis of Albert Einstein’s theory of Special Relativity as well as the Magnetic Quantum Number which is fundamental to Chemistry. At present the hunt is on for an elementary particle called a Magnetic Monopole which in essence should display the attributes of a single magnetic pole in isolation. So the story of magnetism is not over yet.

Faraday’s many groundbreaking experiments at the Royal Society in London. Starting with the electromagnetic rotation of a wire around a magnet, he then went on to develop the first electric motor and the electric dynamo. He also went on to show how electricity flowing in a coil could induce a current in a second coil through magnetism. He later went on to discover that certain materials are diamagnetic such that they are weakly repelled by a magnetic field.

But probably his greatest contribution to the understanding of magnetism was when he showed that a magnetic field could change the plane of polarisation of polarised light. Hence by the late 1860s it was understood that electricity and magnetism were opposite sides of the same coin. The idea of electric and magnetic fields which changed with time, and which interacted to create a resultant force had been proven beyond doubt.

Driverless cars – is it all a con?

A

report on the recent autonomous vehicle exhibition held in Stuttgart, Germany included a couple of things that I’d like to share with you: Firstly, while there was lots of gadgetry on display – vehicle sensors, sophisticated road-mapping devices and so on - there were hardly any actual cars, and none that were driverless!

And secondly (which explains the first point) of the 20 or so exhibitors who were interviewed, not one believed that truly autonomous cars would be on the roads of Europe within a decade!

By ‘truly’ autonomous, I was fascinated to learn that the industry dodges this issue by having six different levels of ‘autonomy’ where level 0 has a human doing all the driving, to level 5 where there’s no human involvement.

Apparently the ‘holy grail’ for the industry is actually not level 5 but level 4 where humans take the control ‘where necessary’! Imagine riding a train that needs the passenger to ‘take control where necessary’ – not very relaxing!

I am not sure that there are any ‘level 4’ cars on the road today, even in Silicon Valley. There is a handful of ‘level 3’ cars which require frequent human intervention and despite what’s been reported this is apparently the type that killed the woman in Arizona.

Add in the reports of how easy it is for hackers to take over a car’s steering and I start to think that despite all the ‘puff’ about a driverless future it’s really just a pipe dream to hook investors and part them from their money. What do you think?

AA Car Genie – Running Report

ou may recall from the last issue that I promised to report back on my time testing AA’s new ‘Car Genie’ which is a recently launched device that claims to predict vehicle breakdowns before they happen. It plugs into the socket all modern cars have inside – usually beneath the dash and broadcasts information to the dedicated Smartphone app.

So how was it? Well, I suggest the predevelopment conversations at AA went something like this: “Here’s my idea boss. We know that when the yellow ‘check engine light’ comes on in our members’ cars, lots of them ignore it until the car breaks down and then we have to come out?”

“Yes my boy...”

“Well boss, if we gave them a plug-in that told us when the light is on then we could nag people into going to get it fixed - and that could save us up to one third of our call-outs!”

“I like it son, but I’m not happy about the word ‘give’. We’ll sell them the plug-in – getting them to pay us to save ourselves work!”

“You’re a genius boss” Then the marketing department realised that folk were unlikely to pay for anything so basic, so they hired a 14-year old app developer who came up with a load of add-ons designed to boost the appeal. I’m genuinely not making this up when I tell you that my AA Genie app will tell me: 1. Where my car is - useful if it’s stolen I thought – except the location given on the app is always for where I was a day or so earlier! Hence consulting ‘find my car’ right now shows it to apparently be 22 miles away from where I can see it from my window.

2. Fuel consumption - now that is a useful one…. except it’s expressed as “3.3 litres in 29.2 miles” which not only needs a lot of maths to give a mpg figure (3.3 divided by 4.54609 and the result then divided into 29.2, if you’re interested. I thought not…) but then it gives a crazy figure that is about 10 mpg more than I’m really getting.

3. Badges – my favourite – these are medals ‘awarded’ (I kid you not) as follows: •F irst Journey: For driving my car for the first time after fitting the device I received a drawing of a leaf on a gold background.

•M ake it Mine: An award for giving my car a name. I didn’t win this…

•E arly Bird: Awarded if I drive my car before 3am •N ight Rider: Ditto after 10pm •L ong Haul: Awarded for a trip of more than 100 miles.

•T en Trips: I suspect you can work out for yourself how to win this medal!

I mean, come on… Perhaps we can offer the AA some help with more ‘Awards’ ideas? As a starter I suggest: •T itfer: Any journey in a town completed while wearing a trilby hat.

•B rogue: For a journey of more than 10 miles wearing sensible shoes.

•N ight Parker: Any trip after 9pm with driver or passenger carrying a working fountain pen.

•F romage: A journey undertaken with any variety of French cheese in the glovebox.

I shall pass on your suggestions for Awards to the AA!

H

onda is a manufacturer that’s always looking ahead. I know how they feel. Since I had an operation on my neck I’ve never looked back. Ouch!

Honda’s Jazz is a good example of the firm’s approach - essentially modern and classless. Or put a better way, it somehow transcends class by mixing ‘car of the people’ practicality with middle class quality. A bit like buying a flat white but from Greggs. Maybe not… but it was worth developing the idea simply to crowbar in an easy joke.

The Jazz occupies an important place in the ‘supermini’ sector alongside the Fiesta, Corsa and Polo, but it now looks a bit like its big brother the Civic and feels more like an MPV - and apparently there’s as much room in the back as in a Mercedes S-Class!

Many people think they know the Jazz. After all it’s been around since 2001 and has sold by the bucketload around the world. That ‘first generation’ model stayed in production until 2008, but since then, much like Madonna or David Bowie, the Jazz has stayed a favourite by

regular re-invention, retaining the great bits but always keeping fresh and relevant.

The latest incarnation is no exception and the version we tested was a ‘fizzer’ – the Sport model with a 1.5 1-VTEC motor. Clearly a bit of alchemy has been employed on the suspension because there’s a bump soaking ride yet it still feels planted in the twisties and returns around 50 mpg! The looks are sporty but not vulgar as is often the case these days when a manufacturer seeks to make a tuned model look distinctive. The Sport costs £17,765 but less ‘souped-up’ but equally worthy versions start at a competitive £13,300 and being a Honda everything works beautifully.

The Jazz was given five stars in independent Euro NCAP crash-tests and it’s fitted with a full roster of airbags, electronic braking and anti-skid technology.

I need to go now to visit a friend in hospital. He’s totally lost his sense of humour. Finds nothing funny. On the plus side he has become utterly non-judgmental of others. That’s right. He’s serious… but not critical. I’ll get my coat.

Stephen Jones last appeared at Esquires in October 1996, so a return is somewhat overdue. Jones

started writing and recording songs at home and his first collection of these demos, I Was Born a Man, was released in July 1995 using the name Babybird. He formed a band in order to tour and promote this work. In 1996, Babybird signed to Echo Records and their first single was released in July 1996.

Babybird were dropped from their record label in 2000 after their third album, Bugged, had poor sales. The band then split. Jones continued on his own, writing

fiction, releasing solo work and created the score for the film Blessed. In October 2005, the band reformed with three members and created another album released in September 2006. They went on tour in November 2009 and then split again in 2013. Jones reunited the band once again in late 2017 with a new line up.

Support comes from Tony Wright, the frontman of Bradford rockers TERRORVISION who had 13 singles land in the Top 40 back in the Top of The Pops days (insert wistful sigh). You may remember their biggest hit ‘Tequila’ which hit no.2 in 1999 and other bangers such as Perseverance, Alice What’s the Matter, Pretend Best Friend and Oblivion.

Idles – Joy as an Act of Resistance Idles’ second album is savage, thought-provoking and often decorated with pitch black humour as it takes aim at everything from toxic masculinity, nationalism, immigration, and class inequality. Coming across a 1939 women’s magazine was the inspiration for AJ Pearce’s first novel, Dear Mrs Bird. Set in London in 1940, Emmeline Lake, the 22-year-old protagonist, is an aspiring journalist desperate to work as a lady war correspondent.

When Emmeline finds a job at a newspaper her dreams are shattered on her first day with the discovery that the role is actually for someone to type up replies to letters sent to the problem page of a women’s magazine. The editor, the tyrannical Henrietta Bird, issues her with a long list of Topics That Will Not Be Published Or Responded To By Mrs Bird. Letters containing any form of Unpleasantness must be destroyed.

As Emmeline works her way through the women’s often heartbreaking letters, she decides to answer them herself.

Emmeline lives with her best friend Bunty in the top-storey flat of a property owned by Bunty’s grandmother which involves a desperate dash to the shelters when the sirens go off. The friends are upbeat and optimistic, volunteering for the Auxiliary Fire Service in the evenings and walking home in blacked-out streets after dancing or seeing a film.

With her charming and light-hearted tone, Emmeline draws the reader into her world of misunderstandings and difficult situations. When her fiancé sends her a telegram from the front to inform her he has eloped with a nurse, Emmeline’s response is, “At least he’s not dead”.

The novel is full of humour despite the horrors of war which are vividly narrated. All around them people are dying. Above all, it is a moving portrayal of female friendship with the girls remaining independent and courageous. Funny and touching, exploring feminism and war, it’s a wonderful read.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado

hings I’ve come to expect during a Taylor Sheridan movie: sweaty palms, heart palpitations, to forget to Anthony Lowery breathe, a headache from forgetting to breathe, to yell expletives (internally) at least once, and to want to do it all over again. Sicario: Day of the Soldado is no exception.

Sheridan’s fourth outing as one of the grittiest screenwriters working today is yet another meditation in poetically bleak storytelling. It’s a lesson in impactful narrative and characterisation, and an antidote to the happily ever after.

The war on drugs has intensified since the events of 2015’s staggering Sicario. The cartels are trafficking terrorists across the U.S.-Mexico border and the American government is forced to get dirty in a game of war where nobody is playing by the rules.

Enter Matt Graver (Josh Brolin), a federal agent frostier than a Minnesota winter and his partner Alejandro, the most enigmatic hitman this side of No Country’s Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem).

Following a string of suicide

bombs on home soil, the duo are tasked into action, operating with more ruthless intent than a cold blade pressed against the back of your neck.

Though a solid thriller from the relatively untested Stefano Sollima, the absence of Sicario’s masterful director Denis Villeneuve and cinematographer Roger Deakins is glaring.

Dariusz Wolski’s (The Martian) camerawork falls just short on its potential, and the editing is less effective in building the same crippling suspense as its prequel.

But Day of the Soldado is a smart sequel in that it isn’t really a sequel. It was vital to writer Sheridan to create a unique experience that transcends the boundaries of a typical follow-up.

Aided by the overhaul in some of its creative crew, the movie plays more like a standalone set in the world of the original. Sure there are some returning characters, but the movie has its own rockhard narrative that’ll have you pining for the third.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado is powerful and poignant, with enough shocking moments to mean the sweat on your brow never dries. Grab a cold flannel and head on in.

ood museums combine great objects with great stories and a perfect example is The Higgins Bedford. The museum’s collections, which are housed in superbly renovated exhibition spaces, cover pre-history to the present day with fossils, porcelain, tribal items, and works by some of Britain’s greatest painters. And each item has a local story to tell; many were collected

by Bedfordians, were made in the town, or have some other connection to our region. Displays are frequently curated with, as well as for, local interest groups. All of this makes The Higgins Bedford a community museum of the first order.

As a Bedfordshire local, the best way to support The Higgins is to join the Friends group. For a small annual fee, you gain privileged access to The Higgins, and at the same time support the museum so that it can carry on making exciting acquisitions and staging ground-breaking exhibitions.

The Higgins and enjoy lots of other opportunities to socialise and get involved. This year alone, the Friends have held a varied lecture programme and organised visits to cultural sites in the UK and in Bologna. Social Thinking is what we do when we share space with others. We consider the context; take in the thoughts, emotions and intentions of the people with whom we are interacting and use that information to determine how we respond (continued from part 1).

1. Social Thinking® is a language-based learning approach.

2. Core philosophies of Social Thinking are: a. We think with our eyes to figure out others’ thoughts, intentions, emotions, plans, etc. b. How we think affects how we feel, and how we behave affects how others think and feel. We learn to make people comfortable around us by using our actions and our language. c. We think about people all the time, even when we have no plans to interact with them. We adjust our own behaviour based on what we think the people around us are thinking. d. We try to avoid another’s uncomfortable thoughts. We constantly consider people around us and adjust our behaviour to help people have good thoughts about us. e. How we adapt our behaviour changes as we age and across different situations and cultures. The sophistication of our behaviours is constantly evolving across our lives. f. It is something all of us do every day, even when we are alone. To understand a novel, TV drama or comedy, one has to think about the character’s emotions, thoughts, reactions, etc. It is at the root of academic learning.
