Leave a Lasting Legacy for Ojai

Just by including the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy in your estate plans, you can help protect the beauty of Ojai for generations to come. A bequest is a simple way to support the OVLC in the future while retaining control of your assets during your lifetime. By making the OVLC a beneficiary of your will, trust, retirement plan, life insurance policy, or financial accounts, you ensure your values will be passed on after you.

The real beneficiary, of course, is Ojai.

Protecting What He Loved

Peter Kinnoch Noone embodied the down-to-earth style of the outdoor industry and is credited with shaping the development of the outdoor retail store as a commercial force, customer refuge and the forefront for the protection of wilderness. He laid the foundation for his career by skiing, climbing and fly-fishing his way out of the University of Utah. This and his innate business acumen prepared him to run the influential Ski Hut in Berkeley, an unofficial gathering spot for the Bay Area’s seminal climbing, outdoor and environmental communities. In 1983, Peter took a big leap southward to join Patagonia where he worked in various executive roles and as a consultant for more than 35 years, until, and through his last illness. He was a frequent flier, traveling the country and the world in search of perfect spots for the extensive roster of Patagonia retail and operations locations, always happily returning to the quiet, rustic beauty of Ojai.

Peter’s gruff exterior—most of his overtures to conversation began with a complaint—belied an uncompromising sense of honor, sharp sense of justice, respect for the dignity of others, a generous helping hand to those in need, and desert-dry sense of humor. He was enthralled by the natural history of the places he loved: the Sierra, southern Utah along Route 12, Silver Creek near Sun Valley and his beloved Ojai. Birding and fly fishing remained lifelong avocations. He spent his later summers in a perfectly appointed, specially tricked out Airstream at Riverside Camp, slot 2a, within earshot of Henry’s Fork.

A natural lone wolf, Peter found a strong community of friends in Ojai. Being outside was important to him and when he wasn’t traveling or fly-fishing he enjoyed golfing at the Ojai Valley Inn where he could stir up a little trouble, revel with his cronies and look at birds. He held dear the natural elements and open space that give the Ojai Valley its unique character and sought to preserve them. He confirmed his trust and support of the stewardship of the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy by leaving an endowment gift.

Peter passed away on July 9, 2018 at the age of 75. A celebration of his life was fittingly held at the OVLC Steelhead Preserve in late September. Two rehabilitated barn owls were released in his honor by the Ojai Raptor Center, another of his favorite local organizations.

Restoration at Work

At a quick glance it is obvious that the Ojai Meadows Preserve is doing what it’s meant to—connecting people to the natural world. However, unless you remember the way Highway 33 used to flood during a rainstorm, you may not realize the important role the preserve plays in capturing flood waters.

History has not always been kind to the meadows. Before the OVLC acquired the Ojai Meadows Preserve in 2000, this historic wetland had been buried under sediment and fill dirt from nearby construction. With nowhere for storm runoff to go, Highway 33 became impassible after rain events and flooding at Nordhoff High School was common.

To alleviate flooding, the OVLC enlisted the help of botanists, biologists and restoration specialists for advice on how to bring the land back to its natural state. These experts designed a plan to excavate fill dirt, creating a basin for flood water to drain from the highway, Nordhoff High School and Taormina neighborhood into the preserve.

The next step was to restore the preserve’s native habitat— improving water infiltration and encouraging the return of wildlife. This was an ambitious undertaking, as the preserve was overrun with non-native weeds and a grove of non-native eucalyptus trees that had been planted in the 1950s. As a result, it was clear that the native habitat would not return on its own. Therefore, the OVLC began an active campaign to replace non-native plants with native wetland species such as willow and mulefat around the pond and native trees, shrubs, grasses, and annual flowers in the areas surrounding the wetlands. This project continues today, as we work to improve the diversity on the preserve.

Almost two decades ago, community members and businesses came together to help the OVLC purchase this land and transform it into a gorgeous wetland environment. Because of their commitment to the environment, we now have this beautiful preserve with a successfully restored wetland near the center of town, and the highway doesn’t flood anymore!

Double Your Impact

TAKE

ADVANTAGE of your company’s matching gift program.

A matching gift means your contribution will go twice as far. Many companies will double (or sometimes triple) the value of their employees’ gifts to the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy. These matching gifts provide valuable funds as we work to protect the views, trails, water, and wildlife of the Ojai Valley. Some companies will still match your gifts even after you retire.

To see if your company will match a gift to the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy, contact your company’s human resources department.

Welcome Back!

A warm welcome back to board members Don Reed, Phil Moncharsh, and Roger Essick! The OVLC is governed by an all volunteer board. To read more about our OVLC board members, please visit our website ovlc.org.

Planting on the Preserves

A huge thank you to Ojai West and International Rotary for the donation of 100 5-gallon coast live oaks that are being planted at the Ventura River Preserve. The oak circle in the photo, and many others, were re-planted in December a year after burning in the Thomas Fire. In addition, 35 OVLC supporters grew a variety of plants for the OVLC to help restore the preserves after the fire.

Nordhoff High School students spent the day planting native purple reed grass plugs at the Ojai Meadows Preserve during their Environmental Studies class. The students were able to get the grass plugs into the ground before all of the rain that we just received! Thank you NHS for the huge help!

Invasive Beetles

What do beautiful communities, rich wildlife habitats, parks, bird nests, our global climate, and tire swings all have in common? They all depend on trees, a notable symbol representing a healthy environment. Much of the conservation and restoration work undertaken by the OVLC has revolved around the planting and protection of trees. Since 2016, however, a newly arrived invasive beetle has been expanding its range in the Ojai Valley, creating a very real threat to our trees.

The first Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB), spotted in the Ojai Valley added Ojai to a long list of affected communities. The PSHB is a small ambrosia beetle thought to come from Viet Nam. It is related to a second similar species (Kuroshio Shot Hole Borer) that together are lumped into the category of Invasive Shot Hole Borer (ISHB), and both are widespread in the southern areas of California from San Diego

County up to Ventura County. Ojai is one of the newest infestations. The PSHB enters trees through boring and it brings with it a pathogenic fungus that causes Fusarium Dieback disease. Infected trees may experience branch dieback, canopy loss, and, in some cases, tree mortality.

Unlike many invasive insects that focus on specific tree species or crops, the PSHB can utilize and reproduce in a great many species of trees that include common landscape trees and native trees in urban and wildland areas. So far, researchers have identified 64 tree species that support the reproduction of the beetle and the associated fungus. Of these, 15 species are known to be particularly susceptible to damage and death caused by fusarium dieback including California sycamore, arroyo willow, red willow, black cottonwood, and our prized valley oaks.

Photo by Brendan Cleak and Caryn Sandoval of One Apparatus

The OVLC has been working with university scientists at the University of California Santa Barbara and through the University of California Division of Agriculture & Natural Resources to track the spread of the beetles and fungus. Beetle traps have been set up at a number of OVLC preserves and beetles have been captured on the Ventura River Preserve and the Ojai Meadows Preserve. Follow-up investigations have shown that the beetle is well-established in trees throughout the Ojai Meadows Preserve, and we are beginning to observe our first tree deaths in willows and cottonwoods near the Maricopa Highway. We continue to monitor affected trees and are working with scientists to develop a response strategy that may include treating some trees or possibly the removal of impacted trees to prevent the spread of beetles.

While there has been a lot of scientific inquiry regarding the spread and impact of the disease, little is known about how to effectively treat it. Since the beetles do not need to leave the tree to reproduce, chemical pesticides are likely to be ineffective unless injected directly into the tree (at a very high cost). In some cases, removing trees and chipping them may help control the spread of the beetles. In some species, affected limbs can be removed and chipped if the trunk is not infested.

As we work on a response plan, our community can play an important role in limiting the spread of beetles and the related disease. The most important action is to not move wood around the area and to not move wood out of the Ojai Valley where it can infect other communities. It is thought that moving firewood is one of the main pathways for the spread of the disease, so always remember to buy it where you burn it. Moving green waste is also a threat. If you have a dead or dying tree in your yard and you observe bore holes, consult a licensed arborist for an inspection prior to removal to ensure beetles are not transported off your property where they can infest more trees. When trees are removed, it is recommended that wood be chipped to ½ or one inch and covered with plastic for several months in a process called solarization.

In the coming months, look for community meetings and information sessions that we hope will bring community resources together to address this threat to our local treasured trees. It is unlikely that any one group or agency can address this threat alone, so we hope to build a community network where efforts are shared among many parties as has been done in Orange County and San Diego County. For more information on PSHB impacts and strategies, visit the website PSHB.org.

Together, our community will help protect Ojai’s open space for everyone to enjoy, forever.

Please join the OVLC in welcoming Ursula Ruiz as our new office manager and bookkeeper. Ursula was born and raised in the Ojai Valley. After graduating Nordhoff High School, Ursula ventured off to the city of Los Angeles to study at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise where she graduated with a degree in Visual Communications. Since then, she has worked in account clerk roles, working upwards and moving into financial management and later to become the Controller of a Plush Company while obtaining her Accounting Degree from Ventura College. She has worked for small businesses, startups and some global brands and more recently in the private sector such as Disney. During that time, she’s seen some really good accounting systems and some terrifyingly bad ones too.

Since 2010, Ursula has been using her expertise to help a variety of clients with all aspects of their accounts and systems. Ursula moved back to Ojai with her husband and son. When she isn’t looking at financial statements you will catch her baking up a storm, studying for her Hybrid JD, or hiking with her husband and son.

In FY18, over 600 people attended our All About Ojai programs and docent-led hikes and tours, 25 California Naturalists graduated, and over 1,700 people attended Mountainfilm on Tour—we are grateful to connect with so many in the community!
