“I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

Foto’s: Joanie Pretorius

Beestong op die kole Bestanddele:

Volstruispasta Bestanddele: 500 g tagliatelle-pasta 250 g spek met ‘n bietjie vet aan (fyngekap) 500 g volstruisvleis (in blokkies gesny) 250 g sampioene (fyngekap) 3 murgpampoentjies (in skyfies gesny) 30 ml Amarula 250 ml room sout en peper parmesaan of Grana Padano

1,5 kg beestong 3 eetlepels olyfolie 3 eetlepels suurlemoensap 1 teelepel paprika 1 teelepel rissievlokkies growwe sout en swartpeper 12 geblikte of vars pynappelringe soetrissiesous Vloeistofmengsel: 1 liter bees- of groenteaftreksel 4 lourierblare 1 medium wortel (opgekap) 1 ui, opgekap 1 selderystingel (opgekap) swartpeperkorrels

Metode:

Metode:

Braai die spek tot bros in ‘n bietjie olyfolie. Voeg die volstruisvleis by.

Resepte & foto’s: RSG Resepte

Vrydag 17 Desember 2021 UNFORTUNATELY, A DYING BREED… Continued from page 12 Andre Hartman, Allan Holten, Pierre Joubert, Dr. Allan Kayle, Eric Lombard, Peter Leube, Italo Martinengo, Arthur Ridge, Charlie Shapiro, Malcolm Turner and Captain Peter Wilmot are but a few names that come to mind.

11 JIMMY HERBERT Retired lecturer: Stellenbosch University (1977-2013) Writer & Specialist in Maritime History and Archaeology

By the mid-80’s almost all contributions to the world's knowledge of maritime archaeology came directly or indirectly from those mentioned above and the global wreck diving community. Even the two ships WASA (Sweden) and MARY ROSE (UK) that provided the world with a treasure trove of archaeology knowledge, were not discovered by archaeologists. Regrettably and incomprehensibly this trend basically persists to this day. Of all the many of artefacts donated to and accepted by the Cape Town museums not one item that I know of is on display for the South African public to see and enjoy. No silver bars from the many recovered from the Joanna (1682) or even a display of the many Nicobar (1783) rare Swedish plate money cargo items already donated to the Cape Town museums in the 1980s. Not even one porcelain item from the well over 150,000 porcelain items lying on the Brederode (1785). It is sad that wreck divers are a dying breed for as with all other wrecks discovered along the South African coast these above mentioned three famous shipwrecks were also discovered by divers, and not archaeologists.

History of the Overberg ...above and below the waves Jimmy Herbert

UNFORTUNATELY, A DYING BREED… As a young lecturer in the 80’s, one of my perks was that, if I could fit it in without any disruption to my lecturing schedule, I was allowed to attend any course at the university, free of charge. So although the salaries were never that good, the courses were excellent. One such 'out of my field' good course that I attended at Stellenbosch was archaeology. At the time (1985-1988) the archaeology fraternity was getting increasingly anxious to stop any and all nonarchaeological underwater excavations. Apart from naturally trying to create and ensure work opportunities for themselves, their main reason put forward for this was the potential and almost certain loss of maritime archaeology information and data. It was logically stated that one should not excavate a wreck just because its location was known or found. Rather such a project should only get the go ahead if there was a sound scientific need for it.

I was next to see the need and follow his example at my alma mater, Stellenbosch University. In my time the head of the archaeology department was the exceptional intellectually gifted, Professor Hilary John Deacon (1936 –2010). This smart man was first to come up with a strategy to eventually stop the unscientific removal of items from our coastal waters. As the national underwater hockey coach (SA, Netherland then again SA) from the 90’s to 2012, I had to not only look after the elite side but also guarantee continuity. Thus, while working on my team with the intention of getting them to ‘tidal wave’ status as the coach, I was wisely expected to simultaneously put effort into the creating of a ‘next wave’ – talented next generation. This invariably ensured not only short term success but also a continuous success. Deacon’s plan was also along these lines but, in his case, the effort was to stop the next wave from being created and enhanced and in so doing allow this ‘breed of aquatic men and commercial salvors’ to die a natural death. Hilary came up with a brilliant long term plan: keep divers out of the limelight (newspapers, articles and museum displays) while promoting archaeology and the correctly stated fact that, information and knowledge were more of a treasure than gold, silver and jewels, etc. This meant that children or young learners would never see or read about divers making significant discoveries. In this fashion the chain of "I want to be like him or her" would be broken. At the time I foolishly thought his plan was absurd but, today I can see, it worked.

Porcelain recovered from the Brederode (1785)

Some divers also started to think along these lines. It was to gain more knowledge in the field of maritime archaeology that the well-known Overberger Tubby Gericke was the first top diver to sign up at the University of Cape Town for a course in archaeology. 12

The Breed of prominent South African divers (contributors) I have had the privilege of knowing, working with, diving with and from whom I learnt so much, have unfortunately passed on, or are today already old men. Fantastic contributors like James and Jimmy Bell, Tommy Botha, Wilfred Chivell, Dr Francois Claassens, Gavin Clackworthy, Brian Clarke, Ken de Goede, Reggie Dodds, Frans du Rand, Captain Ernie Fritzgerald, Tubby Gericke, Louis Groenewald, Continued on page 11 overdeberg2020@gmail.com
