Don’t Miss Andy Warhol at SFMOMA by Chris Narloch
C
ooler temperatures and very cool art await you in San Francisco, where the Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is currently presenting a fantastic retrospective entitled “Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again” but only through Sept. 2, 2019.
Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again is currently on display at SFMOMA.
A survey of the always-relevant artist’s 40-year career, the exhibition is extensive and thorough, including drawings, paintings, films, video, and prints that reveal new complexities about one of the most inventive and important American artists of the 20th century (or any century). This is the West Coast premiere of the first Andy Warhol retrospective in the U.S. since 1989, and it’s a major exhibition that features more than 300 works by the quintessential pop artist (who, among other things, immortalized the Campbell’s soup can). “Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again” was organized by Donna De Salvo, Senior Curator at the Whitney Museum in New York City, and, to her credit, the show does not shy away from Warhol’s homosexuality and the sometimes-coded queer content in his art. The main part of the exhibition, on the fourth floor of the museum, is an overview of his entire artistic career, but if you go – and you should – do not skip the Warhol works displayed on the second and fifth floors, which are essential viewing. Floor 5 showcases some of Warhol’s best-known portraits, featuring artists, athletes, and other celebrities such as Debbie Harry, Dolly Parton, and Liza Minnelli, while Floor 2 includes some really lovely Warhol work from the ‘50s. 6

Those pieces on the second floor were of special interest to me, since I had never before seen Warhol’s homoerotic drawings of men or a fun series of gold shoe collages he did during his early career. I cannot stress enough that this exhibition is not to be missed, despite its costly price tag of $35. That breaks down to $25 for the basic museum admission, plus $10 extra for the Warhol show, which cannot be purchased alone. Spend the day at SFMOMA, and I guarantee you, it will be worth every penny. For more information, visit www.sfmoma.org. outwordmagazine.com

Big Wishes: Bridging the Urban Planning Gender Gap Through Art
I
Op-Ed by Maren Conrad - Sacramento-Based Muralist and Fine Artist
n dirty space between urban dwellings, above the frayed and broken concrete littered with needles and drenched in addiction, lies my opportunity to turn scenes of despair and danger into backdrops of joy, expression and value. These larger than life canvases of steel, brick and stucco become the destinations that define a city. My murals become the place where toddlers go to wish, where dandies go to peacock, and where cars appear toy sized against the background of giants. Each work may be a part of a developer’s project, or painted on a wall that someone has purchased, yet they are owned by no single person, not even their creator.
Michele Obama mural at Rivercity Market Place on Del Paso Blvd. Artist Maren Conrad.
As a female muralist, the desire to transform dangerous alleys into stages for playful interactions originates from a place of self-preservation. The very places that now adorn my 12,000+ square foot creations were once places I would have dreaded to walk through alone. Using my passion as a vehicle that narrows the urban-planning gender gap is not simply insurance for my survival, it is my mission. When local developer Julie Young of Urban Elements, Inc. purchased the building that now houses the offices of Covered Sacramento, she worried the graffiti and frequent visits from those plagued by the

opioid crisis to the northern alley would create an unsafe atmosphere for the staff supporting the underserved Sacramento population with health care support founded by our late mayor Joe Serna. Julie and I are kindred spirits. Instead of focusing on high-rent luxury properties like many in the Sacramento Real Estate game, Julie has turned her focus to concentrating on dwellings for our often unthought of working class. Similarly, I have shifted my focus from creating pricey pieces for milliondollar homes to try to make a difference in the way women are forced to walk a city, carefully dodging under-lit alleys with large
dumpsters that serve as perfect visual obstructions. We are making our way in separate yet related male-dominated career fields. On a drizzly gray day in December, we met to talk about ways to activate the space on 19th & Historic Alley. She relayed a quote by Northern California based poet and children’s book author Shel Silverstein that had been churning through her mind since the beginning of her project: “If you are a dreamer come in. If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, a hoper, a pray-er, a magicbean-buyer. If you’re a pretender come sit by my fire, for we have some flax golden tales

to spin. Come in! Come in!” With thoughts of magic-bean-buyers, wishers, and flax golden tales- a “Jack & The Beanstalk” sized golden dandelion seemed like the perfect image to make a place inviting to children and adults alike, and convey Julie’s sentiment for the building. Thus, the “Wishing Wall” was conceived. In Sacramento, there is now a place to go where you can always find a dandelion to wish upon. If you don’t have enough money to afford a birthday cake or candles, the Wall is there for you. Bad day? A little bright spot of optimism now stands where darkness lay before. Come In.

Silver Oak – Cabernet Please words and photograph by Diana Kienle
S
ilver Oak is a well-known winery, and the annual release of their Cabernet is anticipated each year. Wine stores set up events for the heralded moment when the latest vintage will be available. People have been known to camp out to be first in line to secure their wine. Silver Oak makes one varietal and one varietal only. They focus and specialize in Cabernet. There are two wineries for production of their wine; one in Napa and the other in Healdsburg.
Silver Oak Winery
I walked into the new property in Healdsburg that had opened just one year ago in April of 2018. To say it was a gorgeous setting would be an understatement. Located just off Highway 128, you drive up through vines to reach the winery as it is set among the vines and surrounded by beautiful hillsides. The architecture is modern and sleek yet very welcoming. Once inside, the bar is broad and spacious to allow for many visitors to comfortably stand and enjoy their offerings. There are several different tastings available from a bar tasting to a scheduled library tasting. The choice is yours depending on the experience you are interested in and the time to enjoy. The standard walk-in tasting consists of three wines: The current vintage of the Napa Cabernet, the Alexander Valley Cabernet, and a library wine. I tasted the 2014 Napa, the 2014 Alexander Valley and the 2007 Napa Cabernet. It is really unique to be able to contrast the current release of any wine with an older vintage. The tasting includes a outwordmagazine.com
Silver Oak crystal wine glass to take home. All of this is for only $20! (At the Napa location, I understand this is $30.) I consider this remarkable in these times. Out of the wines, the 2014 Napa Cabernet emerged as my favorite. It was bright red and black fruit and a plush mouthfeel with a soft finish that lasted. Yes, I had to take a bottle home. One of the most interesting aspects of the winemaking at Silver Oak is that they only make one wine. That wine is, of course, Cabernet. It is their focus and their pride to deliver a wine with great depth, year after year with a winning profile. The other stand out for the process is the use of only American oak. American oak is known for providing notes of vanilla, cream soda and coconut, with a creamier texture. The wine is aged for 25 months in barrel and held for 14 to 20 more in bottle before release. Next time you are in Napa or Healdsburg, give yourself the opportunity to step in and try the wine and the experience for yourself. www.silveroak.com Enjoy! August 8, 2019 - August 22, 2019 • No. 630

See “The Wiz” & “Visiting Mr. Green”
T

his month at Broadway At Music Circus, don’t miss a rare chance to see one of the most soulful musicals ever made, and after that take a drive up to Sutter Street in Old Folsom for a powerful, gay-themed, two-man play. The Wiz It’s just a hunch on my part, but I wouldn’t be surprised if “The Wiz” turns out to be the hit of Sacramento’s summer theater season, especially given the dynamite cast that director Glenn Casale has assembled, including Music Circus favorites Phillip Boykin (Lion), Kevin Smith Kirkwood (Scarecrow), Alan Mingo, Jr. (The Wiz), Terry Burrell (Addaperle) and Zonya Love (Evillene). Additionally, Broadway stars Adrianna Hicks and James T. Lane will play Dorothy and Tinman, respectively, with Christina Acosta Robinson as both Glinda and Aunt Em, in this supremely soulful, AfricanAmerican retelling of L. Frank Baum’s beloved novel, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” “The Wiz,” a seven-time Tony Awardwinner (including Best Score and Best Musical), is one of my absolute favorite Broadway shows, and this rare opportunity to see it performed in the round by a sensational cast should not be missed. “The Wiz” performs through August 11 only. “Ease on Down the Road” to the Wells Fargo Pavilion box office, or get tickets at

www.BroadwaySacramento.com. Visiting Mr. Green If you have never been to Sutter Street Theatre, a quaint, intimate venue in Old Folsom, you have until August 18 to see this entertaining two-person drama about a pair of men, one young and one older, who bond despite their initial differences. Two fine actors, Stephen Kauffman and Shane Burrows, give committed performances in “Visiting Mr. Green,” a play that transcends its rickety premise thanks to skillful direction by Janelle Kauffman and terrific work by both lead actors. Kauffman plays Mr. Green, a widowed retiree who will receive community service visits from a much younger man named Ross, as punishment for a near-accident. The basic setup is not very believable, but it does provide a framework for two sturdy performances that make the play well worth seeing. Both men are Jewish, but they are miles apart, with Mr. Green set in his ways yet forgetful, and Ross, a single gay man, initially resentful of his civic duty. The first act is somewhat repetitive and predictable as the pair slowly bonds, and the characters’

secrets are revealed. The second act contains the fireworks, including moving speeches by both men that are very well delivered by Burrows and Kauffman. (The meaty dialogue in Jeff Baron’s script reveals Ross’s simmering anger towards his homophobic father and Mr. Green’s

painful family tragedy.) “Visiting Mr. Green” is definitely gaypositive, and although I wouldn’t call it a classic, it is a genuinely moving play about two broken men who learn to care about each other against all odds. For more information, visit www. sutterstreettheatre.com.

New Queer Music Reviewed by Chris Narloch
W
e receive so much new queer music that it can be overwhelming trying to keep up with it all. Here are five excellent LGBTQ artists who are making music that matters.
Lucy Spraggan – Today Was a Good Day The fifth studio album by this lesbian singer-songwriter, a former contestant on The X Factor, is a winner that showcases her clever songwriting (“Dinner’s Ready,” “Don’t Play This On The Radio”) and her versatile voice (“Breathe,” “Lucky Stars”).
Mathew V – Flashback This soulful gay singer’s video for “Flashback,” a song he wrote about sexual violence he suffered when he was seventeen, is a stunner. Singing through tears, Mathew addresses head-on the shame and the fear of intimacy that survivors of rape experience. The song is great, and by the end of the video, I was in tears too.
Brian Justin Crum – I & U Fans of America’s Got Talent will remember this gorgeous gay guy, who was a finalist on that popular TV talent show. Crum has a hot new look and an addictive new dance track, “I & U,” just out. We can’t wait for an entire album. Brian Justin Crum
Hayley Kiyoko – I Wish This bisexual babe has been using her pop platform to address issues like trans-violence and to make gay-positive music such as “Girls Like Girls.” The very catchy single “I Wish” is the first new music from Kiyoko since she released her dynamite debut disc, “Expectations,” last year.

A Tribute To Judy Garland In Folsom
E
mmy-nominated actress Angela Ingersoll celebrates the music of Judy Garland live in concert this month, when “Get Happy: Angela Ingersoll Sings Judy Garland” makes its way to Folsom’s Harris Center for two performances.
As seen on PBS, "the heiress apparent to the Garland legacy" (Splash Magazine) delivers a powerful, virtuoso performance with her tremendous voice, compassionate storytelling, and naturally winning humor. In addition to headlining concert stages nationwide, Ingersoll won acclaim for her superb portrayal of Garland in the play “End of the Rainbow,” including Chicago's Jeff Award and LA Times Woman of the Year in 20 Outword Magazine

BTS & Babs On The Big Screen by Chris Narloch
M
ovie theaters continue to schedule special events such as concert films, Broadway shows, and re-mastered classic movies in an attempt to combat declining attendance at cinemas as a result of Netflix and other popular streaming services. This month in theaters, you can see a brand new concert film by BTS, the most popular K-pop band to crossover in this country so far, and a 50th Anniversary showing of one of Barbra Streisand’s early movies, the timeless musical “Hello, Dolly!”
Bring The Soul: The Movie The seven-member, South Korean boy band BTS was formed in Seoul in 2013, and their worldwide domination continues with this new concert film, which will be shown numerous times at Sacramento’s Tower Theatre between Aug. 7 and Aug. 18. Featuring live concert footage from their recent “Love Yourself” tour, plus interviews shot on a Paris rooftop after the European leg of the tour, “Bring The Soul: The Movie” should have BTS fans happily screaming their lungs out. Visit www.readingcinemasus.com/tower/film/bring-the-soul-the-movie.
Hello, Dolly! Can it really be 50 years since Barbra Streisand lit up the big screen with her hilarious performance as the marvelous meddling matchmaker Dolly Levi in the movie version of this beloved musical? On stage, Carol Channing and more recently Bette Midler owned the role, but Babs is the eternal Dolly on film, and she wrings every ounce of humor out of the story of a scheming widow who decides to make a match for herself after a wealthy single man (Walter Matthau) comes calling, looking for a wife. TCM Big Screen Classics celebrates the 50th Anniversary of “Hello, Dolly!” back on the big screen, on two different days: Sunday afternoon, Aug. 11, and Wednesday evening, Aug. 14, 2019.
