We’ll equip you with the skills you need so you can make the most of the outdoor environment at every opportunity, from camp craft, to canoeing, navigation to rock climbing. We want to take you from guided adventures to self-propelled journeys planned and enjoyed by you. Funding your adventure

Depending on your chosen adventure these are some of the things you could take away with you at the end of your experience:

Outward Bound was founded in 1941 by the industrialist, Lawrence Holt and the educationalist Kurt Hahn.

Originally we trained young merchant seamen to prepare them for a life at sea and improve their chances of survival if they became shipwrecked. After the war, our courses were open to all and ever since, our mission has remained unchanged – to discover potential through outdoor adventure. We make no apologies that we still have the same mission today, (even though the waterproofs have improved!), it is the original Outward Bound experience, and to take part in a course is to join the one million people who are former Outward Bounders, they range from the first Briton to conquer all fourteen 8,000m peaks to celebrities and leading business figures.

Our mission is to make Outward Bound experiences accessible to as many young people as possible, regardless of financial situation. We can help you raise funds to make your adventure happen, with information available to download on our website outwardbound.org.uk. You can also apply to receive match funding for up to 50% of your course fees (UK residents only, as we are a registered UK charity). Unique locations At The Outward Bound Trust, choosing your venue isn’t about choosing a ‘centre’ but a base from which to start your journey. All of your adventures will take place in the spectacular wild environments surrounding each location. (If you’re taking part in one of our expedition courses, you won’t even set foot in the building when you arrive!)

So all you have to do is choose which environment you’d like to explore first, because we can guarantee you’ll want to come back and discover the others on your next adventure. Whether you’re into mountains, lakes, seas or all three, there is the perfect Outward Bound experience waiting for you.

Each centre has different styles of accommodation, with a mixture of dormitory-style rooms for four to ten people, some having en-suite facilities. We also have student lounges, drying rooms and a small shop – as well as all that outside space to relax in.

I’ll never forget the overnight camping – the sight of the mountains, the moon, the waterfalls and the stars – it was just beautiful.

Loch Eil, the Highlands, Scotland Our Loch Eil centre looks towards Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the UK), is located close to Fort William and on the shores of Loch Eil. This gives incredible access to the high craggy mountains, inland lochs and the stunning West Coast of Scotland, a perfect place for your big adventures to begin.

Ullswater, the Lake District, England Our Ullswater centre, set in the heart of the Lake District National Park and on the shores of the lake, has easy access to Helvellyn, the surrounding fells, crags, ghylls and waterfalls. It is one of the original homes of rock climbing as a sport and boasts a wide variety of locations for any level of climbing. The fells and tarns also provide scenic locations for overnight expeditions.

Highlights: The Lake District is England’s largest national park and covers 1,424 km2 Ullswater is the second largest lake in the Lake District and is considered by many to be the most beautiful Home to a wide range of wildlife including: red squirrels, two species of the few carnivorous plants in England, golden eagles and the vendace (fish) - an endangered species only present in The Lakes.

Aberdovey, Snowdonia, Wales Our Aberdovey centre is located on the stunning Dyfi estuary (a UNESCO world biosphere reserve) on the southern coastal edge of the Snowdonia National Park. It is the perfect setting for all kinds of adventures, with the Snowdonia National Park on the doorstep there is easy access to a wide range of landscapes from steep river gorges, to waterfalls, green valleys, woods, windswept uplands and jagged peaks. We also have our own fantastic waterfront facility and jetty.

You will have one dedicated instructor throughout who will get to know you, understand what you would like to achieve, encourage and guide you whilst you take on new adventures.

...and finally What’s included Our adventures are fully inclusive, right from the moment you arrive at the centre. We provide all the specialist equipment needed, like walking boots, waterproofs, safety equipment and tents. All meals and daily packed lunches are provided, as well as bedding in the dormitories. For full details on what’s included, please refer to the fact sheets on the website (select individuals/ downloads/factsheets), or call for details.

Insurance Our prices also include fully comprehensive travel insurance cover for the duration of the trip. The cover is ‘door to door’ and includes personal accident, medical expenses, personal belongings, money and personal liability. Cancellation cover is also included once the booking has been made and first deposits paid. Please refer to the Terms & Conditions on our website for more information.

Safety Safety is of paramount importance to us at The Outward Bound Trust. We have been taking young people on adventurous journeys in the wild for over seven decades. As a result, we have considerable experience in managing all aspects of safety and enjoy an enviable record in this area. We comply fully with all relevant legislation and all of our centres are licensed under the Adventure Activities Licensing Scheme 1996.

Booking To book your adventure, you can book online or just complete the booking form and return it together with a deposit of £100 to reserve a place. Coach transfer service To make your journey easier to get to our centres, you can make use of our coach transfer service during the summer months. Collections are available from Glasgow

Buchanan Bus Station, Glasgow International Airport, Birmingham International Train Station and Penrith Train Station. More information on the service is on our website.

Fitness The more fit and physically prepared you are, the more you’ll get out of your Outward Bound experience.

There are varying degrees of physical challenge for each activity but the most demanding is probably the expedition. On shorter programmes, such as the one week adventures, it’s advisable to be prepared to carry a full expedition rucksack for a day. Younger age groups do a shorter walk into and out of camp but will still have to carry a day sack for at least a day. We also recommend, for both the Classic and Expeditions, that you’re prepared for at least a three-day walk, in a mountainous environment, with a full rucksack.
