OUR HERITAGE EST. 1962 IN ANAKIWA
At the time of the Treaty of Waitangi the residents of Anakiwa were Ngāti Rāhiri. Although this hapū departed during the 1850 land wars to support their whānau in Taranaki, other hapū and whānau of Te Ātiawa have manawhenua (authority over the land) throughout the area to the present day.
In 1962, the Outward Bound Trust of New Zealand purchased a guest house built by the Beauchamp family who had farmed Anakiwa since 1863. Governor-General Lord Cobham opened the school on 1st September 1962 and shortly after thirty-six young men were welcomed on the first course. Ten years later the first women were invited to attend. Over the years the school in Anakiwa has grown significantly with the original guest house being replaced with new buildings in 1980 and the addition of a new watch house in 2018 as part of Project Refresh, a major building campaign to future proof the school.
Outward Bound and Te Ātiawa recognise the diverse history of Anakiwa, and actively work together to protect the uniqueness of the area.

OUTWARD BOUND
AN INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT
Outward Bound New Zealand is part of an international network of over 30 Outward Bound schools worldwide. Originating in Britain and influenced by philosopher and educator Dr Kurt Hahn, its initial purpose was to help young WWII servicemen better survive the physical and mental challenges of war.
The first Outward Bound School opened at Aberdovey in North Wales in 1941 and its mission quickly grew to include people from all backgrounds. Courses are designed to give participants greater insights into their own abilities and tenacity, summed up in Kurt Hahn’s favourite expression “Plus est en vous - There is more in you”. The name ‘Outward Bound’ is a nautical term to denote a ship about to head out of port to open sea.

THERE IS MORE IN YOU
(Kurt Hahn, founder of Outward Bound).
This simple idea forms the basis of Outward Bound’s philosophy and is the guiding principle for all our experiences.
We specialise in facilitating complex, fun and challenging experiences in the outdoors that help individuals realise their full potential.
“There is so much more to Outward Bound than physical challenges. Every strenuous activity, every test of endurance, every uncomfortable night’s sleep is designed to teach you something about yourself.”
Jo Percival, McKenzie 638

SAFE & SUPPORTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Outward Bound is absolutely committed to health and safety. We pride ourselves on rigorous and comprehensive safety systems and practices to ensure you are physically and emotionally safe at all times. We focus on the appreciation of strengths, interdependence, equality and responsibility for learning.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT STUDENT?
There is a misconception that Outward Bound is only for young people, sent here to be straightened out. This is far from the truth. An important foundation of OB is that all students are here by their own choice, that they want to be here. Yes, we love developing youth into confident and resilient adults, but what might surprise many, is that most of our students are aged 18+yrs.
We value diversity; any age, gender, ethnicity, or religion. To date our oldest student was 84! Know someone who is keen to beat that record? Send them our way!
Here are the key attributes that make for a great Outward Bound student:
Open to Learning
Above anything else, you need to be open to the process of learning more about yourself and working in a team. This is not to say that you won’t find working in close quarters with others challenging… but being open to what is on offer is fundamental to making the most of your Outward Bound course.
Open to Getting Involved
The more you put into your course, the more you will take away. Giving things a go is pivotal to the success of your OB experience.
A Base Level of Health
You do not have to be an athlete to get the most out of your course but ensuring you are physically and mentally in good shape will support you to reach the best course outcomes.

HEALTH & SAFETY
A comprehensive and rigorous safety programme sits at the foundation of our course delivery. We are 100% committed to consistently delivering quality courses in a safe and supportive environment. We don’t deny that your course involves risks. However, those risks are carefully managed using the following framework:
► Duty Manager
A Duty Manager is assigned daily, contactable 24/7 and their role is dedicated to overseeing the instructors and their day to day responsibilities.
► Expert Staff
Outward Bound attracts high calibre candidates to our annual instructor selection process . New instructors go through a rigorous 2 month training programme followed by a 4 month induction phase. They continue to be mentored by senior instructors for their first year. All instructors undertake 3 weeks of staff training each year and are allocated funding to undertake further training with external providers. Instructors are employed full time on 3 year contracts.
► Quality Equipment
All our safety equipment is subject to pre-use checks, monthly inspections and scheduled replacement to ensure it is fit for purpose.
► External Safety Advisory Committee (ESAC)
ESAC is made up of outdoor sector safety experts. Alongside our Safety Manager and School Director, they advise the Board on health & safety matters. This includes oversight of our schedule of regular audits, and approving any substantial changes to our safety management policy or system.
Students rated safety an average of 9.4 10
