2023 Impact Report

Page 1

I saw students step into leadership roles, showcase compassion and empathy, and communicate effectively. It was transformational for everyone… including me.

Our 55th year of changing lives through challenge and discovery proved to be one of rebuilding and reaching new heights.

On the heels of a worldwide pandemic, workplace disruption and the escalating social-emotional needs of young people, it is clear that North Carolina Outward Bound School’s (NCOBS) mission-driven programs are needed now more than ever. Since our founding 55 years ago, we have committed to the School’s core values and creative adaptations to the needs of the times. Fully aligned with principles and traditions, we go forth now to develop strategic, innovative, and dynamic plans to serve in these challenging times.

We envision a world where the next generation of servant leaders will have the skills to navigate the complex problems of the day with confidence, perseverance, and collaboration. Building on the School’s legacy and rooted in our course curricula and Four Pillars - self-reliance, physical fitness, craftsmanship, and compassion - NCOBS alumni will take what they learn on course to navigate internal and external adversity with courage and effectiveness.

In pursuit of our vision to serve more students and increase program quality and relevance, the primary goal this past year was to strengthen staff. With a focus on staff recruitment, training, well-being, diversity, equity, inclusion, and retention, we have successfully begun to rebuild our pipeline of instructors. These staff retention efforts are paying dividends in creating a positive and thriving culture and increasing the number of students we can serve year over year.

In FY 2023:

• We saw a 20% increase in the number of students we served from FY 2022, and a 306% increase since FY 2021.

• There was a 10.5% increase in tuition growth from FY 2022.

• We saw a 21% increase in the retention of Assistant Instructors since 2022.

• 24% of our students received scholarships totaling $768,204.

I greatly value the ethos of creating and implementing a shared vision for NCOBS. In FY 2023, we convened staff, alumni, community partners, donors, and board members in a collaborative strategic planning process to chart the course for NCOBS’ next 55 years. Our new, three-year strategic plan outlines a bold vision for impact, with measurable outcomes that will strengthen our programs.

Our key focus is to diversifying our program offerings and course portfolio that will increase mission impact and serve more students. We will accomplish this through a curriculum progression with clients, schools, and community partners of muliple touchpoints that have a measurable impact over time. You can see how these measured impacts are quantified on page 12 of this report. This strategic approach to growth and change future-proofs our brand, establishes sound forecasting metrics, and provides three-year financial models to ensure our sustainability.

We invite you to join us in this vital work. Your support and involvement has been instrumental in our success, and we are deeply grateful for your commitment to NCOBS. We will keep the flame strong as we pass it on to future generations. Thank you for being a part of our community and ensuring we continue to have an impact in the years ahead.

MARCH - MAY 2022

Mountain New Staff Training

The primary purpose of New Staff Training is to ensure that prospective field staff have the proper technical, teaching, and facilitation skills, as well as a solid understanding of Outward Bound philosophy and methodology. Twenty-two prospective instructors completed New Staff Training in 2022.

JUNE 2022

All Staff Training at Cedar Rock Base Camp

Our field, base camp, and administrative staff gathered in June for trainings and workshops that focused on NCOBS curricula, vision, and mission while building camaraderie and community. This annual experience results in a high level of program quality, a strong staff culture, and a positive student experience.

JULY 2022

55th Anniversary Event at Smoky Park Supper Club

In July 2022, NCOBS marked 55 years of “changing lives through challenge and discovery” with a celebration attended by local staff, board members, and donors. A month-long fundraising campaign in honor of the School’s 55th anniversary raised over $80,000 in unrestricted funds to support operations.

SEPTEMBER 2022

Everglades Base Camp Damaged by Hurricane Ian

Sunset Island, home to our Florida Programs, sustained significant damage when Ian made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane in Everglades City. A number of former and current staff, board members, and friends of the School came together to repair and rebuild the base.

OCTOBER 2022

Fall Board Meeting at Table Rock Base Camp

The NCOBS Board of Directors gathered, as they do multiple times a year, to provide oversight and support for the School. We are deeply indebted to each of our former and current board members for their enduring service to NCOBS.

FEBRUARY 2023

Annual Unity Project Breakfast

This annual fundraising event provides funding to support the Charlotte Unity Project and scholarships for students from Charlotte-Mecklenburg high schools. One hundred fifty people attended the 2023 event and raised over $100,000.

APRIL 2022

BIPOC FELLOWSHIP KICKS OFF

NCOBS students, staff, and partners are as diverse as our courses and program environments. To meet the needs of all stakeholders, NCOBS offers innovative and focused trainings, curricula, and programs for its staff.

As an example, NCOBS has developed leadership opportunities to further develop its staff pool from underrepresented and marginalized communities. In 2022, with the launch of the Fellowship for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Staff, the School provided professional development for select individuals who seek to pursue or further their careers in the outdoor education industry.

The BIPOC Fellowship aims to increase diversity in the professional outdoor community and to provide an affinity space for training and development. NCOBS hopes to retain as many of these Fellows as possible so that the students we serve are better reflected in our staff. Eight individuals completed the BIPOC Fellowship in 2022, its first year, with five Fellows returning in 2023 to join the School in various roles.

In FY 2023, we served 2,737 participants on public wilderness courses and through our custom contract programs for schools and professionals, from the Florida Everglades to the mountains of North Carolina. Our students range from school-age students to educators, adults, veterans, and professionals. No matter their age, they discover that they are capable of more than they know.

24 RECEIVED A SCHOLARSHIP

$768,200 was awarded!

Our scholarship program is guided by a single principle: every person, regardless of means, should have the opportunity to go Outward Bound.

That’s 12,705 days of changing lives through challenge and discovery!

When I arrived at base, I was in awe of how happy I felt. For the first couple days, I was so scared that that feeling would fade away - but it never did. I have been intensely challenged in numerous ways, but through it all, that bliss never left me. Lila, Age 19, Alumna

Hurricane Ian’s Impact on NCOBS’ Historic Everglades City Base Camp

In September 2022, Sunset Island sustained significant damage as Hurricane Ian made landfall in Everglades City. Despite a five-foot storm surge that flooded the island, the impact on our buildings was not as severe as anticipated. The brunt of the damage consisted of heavy deposits of mud and debris on the ground floor of each of our buildings, and broken windows and unstable walls in the West Cottage. One of four docks damaged by the surge could not be salvaged, and our canoe fleet suffered losses as boat racks were uprooted by the flood.

Since Hurricane Irma in 2017, the School has made a concerted effort to upgrade the base to better withstand major weather events, and our staff is trained to stormproof the base at the end of each season. Both of these factors resulted in far less damage to the base following Ian’s destructive path.

We are deeply grateful to the volunteers—former and current staff, board members, and friends of the School—who traveled to Everglades City to complete the needed repairs. This team’s work, which truly embodied our motto, “to serve, to strive, and not to yield,” allowed us to begin the winter season on schedule, less than one month after the storm.

FINANCIAL NARRATIVE

In FY23, in Year Two of a Five Year build back from the pandemic, NCOBS experienced a strong year of scaling program revenue – a 22% increase in tuition and scholarships over prior year.

Scholarship funds played a significant role in maintaining strong enrollment for FY23 courses. NCOBS awarded $823,689 in scholarships to 24% of 2,737 students in FY23.

Thanks to generous donations to support increases in field staff pay and training, NCOBS made significant financial investments to ensure sustainable recruitment and retention practices that will continue to pay dividends in years to come. In FY23, health benefit plans were expanded to field staff working a full season, contributing to these recruitment and retention efforts.

At the end of FY23, NCOBS unrestricted net assets were $1,933,122 and restricted net assets were $22,672,438.

Leading the Way

Outward Bound is at the center of a fundamental shift in the nation’s educational model. We are helping students become more engaged, compassionate, and confident. By teaching critical social and emotional skills, our programs are helping students outgrow their comfort zones and learn to lead together.

In order to continuously improve the student experience and enhance professional development for staff, Outward Bound USA launched the Outward Bound Professional Learning Lab in 2017 with the generous support of the S.D. Bechtel Jr. Foundation. At the center of the Lab’s work is defining and measuring the social and emotional skills students develop on Outward Bound and the practices staff use to support this growth.

Why does Social Emotional Learning matter?

Outward Bound is often known for its commitment to teaching technical outdoor skills like rock climbing, orienteering, and risk assessment in the backcountry. Equally, if not more important, has been Outward Bound’s unwavering commitment to teaching inter/intra personal skills like compassion, leadership, and perseverance. Today, these skills are referred to as socialemotional skills and are at the center of an educational shift within U.S. Schools. Teachers are discovering that academic outcomes are often dependent on these social-emotional skills.

OUR EDUCATIONAL TOOL Domains of Thriving

Social and Emotional Learning is an integral part of education and human development. It is the process through which we acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage our emotions, and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy to others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

THE COLLABORATIVE FOR ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING

To measure our impact, Outward Bound has combined its 60 years of experience facilitating life-changing experiences with the latest research on socialemotional development to create The Domains of Thriving (DoT) educational tool. The tool highlights the four areas of human development that are impacted on an Outward Bound course: Courage, Belonging, Reflection, and Physical Engagement. Surrounding all of this are our Conditions for Learning, which provide the foundation for transformative learning experiences.

Measuring our Social Emotional Learning Impact

The Outward Bound Outcomes Survey (OBOS), designed and validated by the Partnerships for Education and Resilience (PEAR), measures self-reported change in key areas critical to developing the Domains of Thriving’s four domains. Participants fill out the survey after their course and reflect on their skills when they started the course compared to after the course. The OBOS measures this data for young people ages 10-23 on courses three days or longer.

We analyze the results and leverage the learnings to improve programming, staff trainings, and ensure we are providing equitable outcomes for all students.

The graph below represents the percentage of students that reported a positive change on each social-emotional skill.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

In FY 2023, students reported the greatest magnitude of change in Group Relationships, with the average score increasing .77 from before course to after course on a 4 pt scale.

“This group of people would otherwise never interact-but a shared challenge brought us together and we all have a very specific connection that cannot be matched.”
