#20IMPACT20 - Outward Bound Hong Kong's most challenging sea journey of the year, was designed to represent Hong Kong's post-pandemic recovery and showcase resilience in the face of adversity.

The primary objective of #20IMPACT20 was to future-proof a group of resilient individuals, catalyze their personal development, and empower them to make positive impacts in the community. Through this, we created more effective communities and ultimately built a stronger Hong Kong. #20IMPACT20 involved a series of challenging learning experiences in the outdoors, the majority being in the sea. The 20 selected participants, chosen for their passion and ability to impact disadvantaged communities in Hong Kong, embarked on the expedition to/from Osaka on Hong Kong's largest training yacht - the Spirit of Outward Bound Hong Kong.

Throughout the voyage, they underwent rigorous training and round-the-clock sailing that pushed their physical and mental boundaries, fostering future skills, social inclusion, and well-being.

Upon completion of the expedition, the impact of the campaign went beyond the participants themselves. Each participant was empowered to make positive impacts on a disadvantaged community upon their return. By applying the lessons learned, skills acquired, and perspectives gained during the expedition, all participants were able to make a tangible and positive difference in the lives of those in need.

Measuring Impact

Every participant is required for a self-evaluation at the end of #20IMPACT20.

The data was collected in December 2023, following the completion of impact projects and six months after the expedition.

The 5 key areas to quantify the impact of our work includes Resilience, SelfConfidence, Compassion, Social Competence, and Environmental Responsibility.

RESILIENCE

The ability to “bounce back” from, and adjust to adversity and challenges.

OBHK defines RESILIENCE as having the ability to “bounce back" from adversities. We have specifically incorporated it in our courses by placing participants in challenging and unfamiliar circumstances, so they learn to cope, adapt, persevere and discover ways to overcome challenges.

They leave our courses with increased resilience, which contributes to success later in life.

Awareness of connection to nature and demonstrating a sense of consciousness and stewardship for the natural world.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY involves connecting to nature, and fostering respect and responsibility for the environment - which is an essential part of all Outward Bound courses.

Many are increasingly spending time online rather than in the outdoors. For this reason, there is an urgent need to develop connections back with nature for the wellbeing of individuals, society, and the environment, especially with the severe environmental degradation across the world in recent years.

This is especially important for youth in Hong Kong, as having grown up in a predominantly urban environment does not mean they should be disconnected from nature.

Impact projects - future skills WORKSHOPS ON THEORETICAL AI MODULES AND HANDS-ON TRAINING IN AI TOOL TO GAIN PRACTICAL SKILLS WITH FREE METHODIST CHURCH SOCIAL SERVICE “Participants are especially interested in my sharing about application of different technologies in the financial field, like banks in Hong Kong, and working experience as a Tech graduate in a bank.“

FINANCIAL EDUCATION WORKSHOPS WERE HELD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO DEVELOP SOUND FINANCIAL HABITS AND PREPARE FOR THEIR FUTURE “I plan to leverage this experience to reach out to other schools as well. I intend to conduct these workshops annually with the German/Swiss School and build up to hosting them with 3-4 schools each year. .“

FACILITATE STEM EDUCATION BY F1™ IN SCHOOLS, WHERE STUDENTS COLLABORATE, DESIGN, MANUFACTURE, AND RACE COMPRESSED AIR-POWERED CARS [2024 PROJECT] WITH F1-IN-SCHOOLS HONG KONG “In 2024, I will sponsor and lead an underprivileged school to conduct F1-in-School program - allowing students to know there’s more graduation pathways than they knew.”

INSPIRE GIRLS BY SHARING MY PERSONAL JOURNEY, EMPHASIZING RESILIENCE AND DIVERSE CAREER PATHS WITH INSPIRING HONG KONG “I plan to persist in participating as a role model at various organizational events like WISE, SportsChat, advocating for women's empowerment. Eventually, I aim to take on committee roles to further contribute to these initiatives.”

GUIDE AND SUPPORT YOUTH TO PREPARE FOR UNIVERSITY, AND OFFER ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS AND MENTAL SUPPORT “The project shows positive results in the personal development of targeted youth through measurable assessments. Continuous mentoring sessions ensure sustainability.”

PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL TRAINING TO HELP STUDENTS DISCOVER AND ENHANCE THEIR POTENTIAL , BUILD CONFIDENCE TO PREPARE FOR FUTURE WITH TWGHS SUN HOI DIRECTORS' COLLEGE; FUKIEN SECONDARY SCHOOL “Students from broken families learned to calm their emotions through basketball. In 2024, I will work with UAT Association to offer free basketball classes to help students explore their potential.”

PROTECT NATURE CLASSROOM THROUGH CONSERVING AND REPAIRING AND UPCYCLING OUTDOOR FACILITIES FOR EDUCATION PURPOSE WITH DISCOVERY CENTRE

Impact projects - Well Being ENHANCE MENTAL WELLNESS THROUGH 4 ART WORKSHOPS TO RELIEVE WORKPLACE STRESS LEVEL AT WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION WESTERN PACIFIC REGIONAL OFFICE “The wellness artwork workshops became a platform the single mother to relax, cancer survivor to cry, stressed individuals to breath… and also a platform to raise the awareness on sexual misconducts. “

PROVIDE UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN EXPERIENCE FOR VARIOUS NEW SPORTS, AND FOLLOW UP WITH LONG-TERM TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES WITH LEO CLUB OF LION ROCK “They got to explore sports such as dodgebee, roliball and orienteering, which are not easily accessible at school. Upon the end of workshops, children with potentials were referred to long-term community classes to further sharpen their skills.“

HELP OVERWHELMED YOUTH TO RELIEVE STRESS IN PASTEL ART AND RECONNECT WITH PEOPLE “A university freshman, feeling overwhelmed by the new environment and personal expectations, joined a pastel drawing workshop. Surprisingly, he discovered his artistic talent and found happiness through connecting with others.”

The resilient individuals have made significant impacts on 20 disadvantaged communities through the #20IMPACT20 impact projects. It marks the end of #20IMPACT20 Osaka Expedition, but the impact will continue to grow.

The seeds of well-being, social inclusion, and future skills have been planted in the minds of the 20 resilient individuals and the disadvantaged communities.

They will work towards building Effective Communities and ultimately creating a Stronger Hong Kong.

Our young people are our future and we have a duty to ensure that we are consciously equipping them with the skills required to succeed in an increasingly complex, uncertain, and evolving society.

The evidence in this Impact Report demonstrates the positive impact Outward Bound Hong Kong (OBHK) has on our participants as well as the community.

The benefits of providing quality outdoor experiential education are well known and every Hong Kong youth deserves to benefit so that they can be part of Hong Kong's successful future. A report showed that every $1 invested in an Outward Bound experience returned $13 in social benefits during the participants' lifetime.
