There’s nothing better than a total renewal every now and then – knowing how to respond to new challenges, from the outside world and our inner realms, demonstrating creativity, self-confidence, energy, courage and excellence always. And what challenges are we talking about, you might ask?

En primer lugar, tenemos que decir que después de 3 años de trabajo en la co-edición de una revista en la Costa Blanca, hemos consolidado una gran experiencia que con el paso del tiempo ha ido madurando y volcándose hacia una audiencia cada vez mayor y más internacional. Y en nuestro reto de continuar superándonos, decidimos arrancar con una nueva revista, abriendo nuestras puertas a otras fronteras más allá de España, buscando hermandades, lazos comunes con gentes, paisajes, gastronomías, expresiones artísticas, arquitecturas y todo tipo de manifestaciones humanas sobresalientes y hermosas como las que se expresan alrededor del mundo. Hemos decidido el nombre de Outstanding, que nos abre un sinfín de posibilidades de contenido, vinculadas con todo aquello que refleje la inmensa riqueza del quehacer humano.

First, let’s say that after 3 years of work co-producing a magazine in the Costa Blanca area of Spain, we have consolidated our experience and matured with each new issue, addressing an increasingly broader and more international audience. Now in answer to the challenge of ongoing improvement, we are setting out with a new magazine, expanding our horizons beyond the frontiers of Spain, in search of twinning initiatives, new relations, new landscapes, cuisine, artistic expressions, architecture and many other examples of human effort we consider to be “outstanding” for their beauty and meaning, wherever we may find them around the globe. We have chosen the name Outstanding. A name that unleashes a range of new contents related to everything that portrays the immense richness of our human endeavours.

Ámsterdam la Venecia del Norte

Ámsterdam tiene el sabor de una pequeña villa y de una gran metrópolis al mismo tiempo, lo que la convierte en una de las ciudades más encantadoras y habitables de Europa; por sus numerosos y vetustos canales y su arquitectura de belleza singular, se la conoce también como La Venecia del Norte.

Amsterdam has the flavour of a small village and a modern metropolis at the same time, making it one of the most charming and liveable cities in Europe. Due to its many ancient canals and its unique architecture, Amsterdam is also known as the Venice of the North.

Venice of the North Cuenta la historia que Ámsterdam fue fundada por una pareja de pescadores frisones que llegaron al estuario del Ij y la desembocadura del Amtel, allá por el año 1.200... y que poco tiempo después, ya se hablaba de Amsteldame, un caserío localizado encima de un dique (dame) sobre el río Ámstel, construido por los pescadores de arenque que continuaban llegando para quedarse.

The chronicles tell that Amsterdam was founded by two Frisian fishermen who arrived at the Ij delta and mouth of the river Amstel around the year 1200... They also say that a short time later, people were already talking about Amsteldame, a small settlement set on a dike (dame) over the Amstel river, which grew larger as more herring fishermen came to stay.

Siendo como es, una ciudad, y más aún, un país extendido encima de un estuario, cuya tercera parte se encuentra por debajo del nivel del mar, no es extraña la maestría con que los holandeses han aprendido a manejar el curso de las aguas, creando islas, canales, sistemas de riego y diques extraordinarios, así como el desecamiento de grandes extensiones de mar que hoy se consideran entre los territorios más fértiles del mundo. Durante la segunda parte del Siglo XX, Holanda desarrolló los proyectos de ingeniería más admirables del planeta, siendo el más destacado el Plan Delta (1957-1986) con una sucesión de represas espectaculares diseñadas para controlar el nivel de las aguas en la provincia de Zelanda.

The city, and indeed a large part of the entire country, is laid out on an estuary, one third of which is below sea level; it comes as no surprise that the Dutch are experts in dealing with water and watercourses, making islands, canals, irrigation systems and sturdy dikes that have contributed to an increase in the country’s fertile croplands gained from the sea. During the second half of the 20th century, Holland engineered some of the most admirable water projects on the planet, the most noteworthy of which were the Delta Works (1957-1986) - a series of spectacular dams, sluices and barriers designed to shorten the Dutch coastline and protect the Zeeland area.

Today, Amsterdam has an area of 21,000 hectares, with a population of around 1.4 million. It is called the country’s capital although it is not the seat of government, which is The Hague; however, Amsterdam is the largest city, with the biggest cultural and entertainment line-up and the most avant-garde scene in the Netherlands. It has some 250 bridges, 50 parks, 40 museums, 70 theatres, 2,500 houseboats and over one million bicycles...

El centro de Ámsterdam es relativamente pequeño; su casco antiguo se sitúa en el interior de un anillo de cinco canales concéntricos, el Singel, el Herengracht, el Keizersgracht, el Prinsengracht, y el Singelgracht, que forman el así llamado cinturón de canales construidos en el siglo XVII. La magnífica estación central, de estilo renacentista e inaugurada en 1889, es el vórtice central de este semicírculo. Más de cien canales, declarados por la Unesco Patrimonio de la Humanidad, se deslizan sigilosos y vibrantes por la ciudad de Ámsterdam; en sus aguas se reflejan aún las impresionantes mansiones construidas en el Siglo XVII, el siglo de Oro holandés, durante el cual y gracias a un intenso comercio y estrecho contacto con numerosas culturas, se asientan las bases de un país tolerante, democrático y amante de la diversidad. Ámsterdam se divide en varios distritos, siendo uno de ellos el Jordaan, cuya construcción arrancó allá por el año 1612 para expansión necesaria de su casco antiguo. Fundado para dar cabida a los miles de emigrantes obreros y artesanos que empezaron a poblar la ciudad durante el Siglo XVII, el Jordaan representa uno de los espacios más emblemáticos y fascinantes de Ámsterdam, tanto por sus acogedores bares, terrazas, restaurantes, galerías de arte, tiendas de todo tipo, magníficas iglesias y mercados, como por su ambiente vivaz y alternativo.

Amsterdam city centre is relatively small, built within a semicircle flanked by five canals: The Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht and the Singelgracht – true wonders of 17th century architecture. Its magnificent Central Station in the Renaissance style, opened in 1889, is the hub of this semicircular maze. The canals of Amsterdam, numbering over one hundred, were recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, and they run proudly through the entire city, reflecting impressive 17th-century mansions from the Dutch Golden Age, during which trade and commerce laid the basis of what is today a democratic, highly-tolerant country that thrives on diversity. Amsterdam is divided into a number of districts. One of these is the Jordaan, which dates back to around 1612 when the city centre needed to expand to cater for an influx of workers. Built for the thousands of immigrant workers and craftsmen who populated the city in the 17th century, the Jordaan is one of the most emblematic and fascinating areas of Amsterdam because of its inviting terraces and restaurants, art galleries and shops of all kinds, and no less so for its lively alternative scene.

Nadie conoce a ciencia cierta el origen de la palabra Jordaan, pero se rumora que el nombre del barrio deriva del francés jardín, y que fue bautizado así por los numerosos hugonotes (franceses calvinistas) que en el siglo XVII buscaron aquí su refugio, encontrándose con que gran parte de sus calles llevaba el nombre de una flor o de una planta. El canal de la Rosa, el Canal de las Flores, el Canal de la Flor de Lis… El Jordaan ha sido testigo de una gran transformación a lo largo de los años, pasando de ser un sencillo barrio marginal, a ser un espacio exclusivo y costoso en el que el valor económico de las casas - cuando se encuentran - supera con creces el promedio del país. Declaradas patrimonio cultural de la ciudad, más de una cuarta parte de las propiedades del Jordaan son monumentos registrados que conservan y protegen la identidad original de este barrio centenario. Pero además del Jordaan existen en Ámsterdam otros distritos que son igualmente fascinantes y diversos. El distrito Sur, por ejemplo, que alberga tres de los museos más importantes del país: el Rijksmuseum, el Museo Van Gogh y el Museo de Arte Moderno Stedelijk , así como la sala de conciertos Concertgebow, hogar de la gran orquesta filarmónica y en la que se presentan los mejores músicos del mundo... Aquí se encuentra también el Vondel Park, que data de 1860, un pequeño equivalente del Hyde Park de Londres, pulmón y refugio de la ciudad, con árboles majestuosos, estanques y verdes explandas, y lugar de encuentro de artistas, deportistas, músicos y familias.

No one really knows the origin of the word Jordaan, but it is said that it derived from the French jardin, so dubbed by the numerous Huguenots from France who sought refuge here in the 17th century, and who found many street names called after flowers and plants. The Rose canal, the Flower canal, the Fleur-de-Lis canal… El Jordaan has witnessed huge changes over the years, growing from a simple marginal working-class district to become a unique, sought-after area where the standard of living is now well above the country’s average. It was declared part of the city’s cultural heritage, and over one fourth of properties in Jordaan are now listed monuments that painstakingly preserve and protect the original identity of this centennial borough of the city. Apart from the Jordaan there are other districts in Amsterdam that are just as interesting and charming. The south or Zuid district, for example, that boasts three of the leading museums in the country: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Modern Art Museum, plus the Concertgebouw, seat of the Philharmonic Orchestra where some of the finest musicians in the world play... Also located here is Vondel Park, which dates back to 1860, the smaller sister of London’s Hyde Park; a green lung and refuge in the city centre, with majestic trees, ponds and green lawns; a meeting point for artists, sportspeople, musicians and families.

El distrito Sur comprende también el Viejo Sur, la zona más glamorosa de la ciudad, donde viven los ricos y famosos y en la que se encuentran las tiendas, restaurantes, terrazas y centros residenciales más exclusivos de la ciudad. En la calle P.C. Hoofdstraat, situada a escasos metros del parque y los museos, se pueden encontrar las marcas más glamorosas del mundo tales como Chanel, Gucci, Vuitton, Valentino, Cartier... Esta calle se conoce como la pequeña quinta avenida de New York. Otros distritos importantes de la ciudad son El Plantage, con sus extensas áreas verdes, jardínes botánicos, y el hermoso zoológico Artis, así como el populoso distrito Este y el distrito Norte, en la otra rivera del IJ. Ámsterdam está repleto de rincones secretos, casas y jardines flotantes, castaños centenarios y macetas de flores, ventanas y balcones que se miran uno al otro, curvas y torceduras, pequeños puentes arqueados, bicicletas sin fin e historias asombrosas. Nada como sentarse en una de sus terrazas a saborear una tarta de manzana o una exqusita cerveza blanca en una tarde soleada, mientras vemos pasar, como en un teatro mágico, la inmensa variedad de personajes y culturas que Ámsterdam prodiga a manos llenas.

The Zuid district also includes the “Old South”, or Museum Quarter, the most glamorous area of the city, where the rich and famous live, with its plethora of cafés, restaurants, boutiques and some of the most exclusive residential centres in the city. On P.C. Hoofdstraat, situated just a few metres from the park and the museums, you can find some of the most glamorous brands in the world: Chanel, Gucci, Vuitton, Valentino, Cartier... This street is called the little Fifth Avenue, after New York’s larger version. Other noteworthy quarters in the city are the Plantage, with its extensive green zones, botanical gardens and the beautiful Artis Zoo Garden, and the densely populated Oste or East district, and the Noord or North district, on the far bank of the Ij. Amsterdam is full of secret nooks and crannies, houseboats and floating gardens, centuries-old chestnuts and potted flowers, windows and balconies that look out on one another, bends and zigzags, tiny arched bridges, countless bicycles and amazing real-life tales. There’s nothing like sitting on one of its bustling terraces to enjoy a piece of apple pie, or a frothy-headed beer on a sunny afternoon, as we contemplate, like in a magical theatre, the great diversity of characters and cultures that Amsterdam so delightfully embraces.

A Protestant church built in 1620-1631 on the banks of the Prinsengracht canal, next to the Jordaan district. The church tower at 85 m is the highest in Amsterdam and is capped by the figure of the crown of Emperor Maximilian of Austria, who is said to have been cured of a serious disease here. This church has a famous set of bells that play wonderful carillon concerts at certain times. It is said that Rembrandt is buried in here. 5. THE NORTH MARKET - DE NOORDERMARKT:

Amsterdam has lots of markets and street stalls, many of which specialize in specific items. The Noordermarkt opens on Saturday mornings and is one of these special places, presenting organic products, handcrafted cheeses, antiques and second-hand goods. Mostly unknown to mass tourism, this market combines the Bohemian spirit with the alternative scene now popular in the Jordaan district.

Amsterdam is a charming city, both because of its cultural pluralism and its monuments and sights, full of magic and beauty, and all the activities you can enjoy. Here are just a few of these attractions that everyone can go in for, both locals and the thousands and thousands of visitors who flock to this city from all parts of the globe.

Entrar en contacto con una cultura que vive y se organiza totalmente alrededor de un ritual es algo sobrecogedor. Hablamos de Valencia y de Las Fallas, una celebración en la que participan cientos de miles de personas y cuya magia, amén de su colorido y espectacularidad, consiste en que unifica a todos sus participantes, ricos y pobres, hombres y mujeres, viejos y niños, propios y ajenos.

Coming into contact with a culture that is totally dedicated to a ritual and lives it fully is awesome. That’s what Valencia and its Fallas festivities are like – a celebration that involves hundreds of thousands of people; a festivity whose true magic, apart from the colour and pageantry, involves unifying the ideals and efforts of every participant: rich and poor, men and women, the elderly and the young, natives and visitors.

The “Fallas” festivities of Valencia A lace of fire and tradition Las Fallas combinan toda clase de artes, artesanías y disciplinas: el diseño, la escultura, la pintura, la construcción, el bordado y la costura, la pirotecnia, el arte de la gastronomía, la música, los encajes de flores, y todo ello coronado con la devoción de una gran comunidad humana hacia su fe, su Virgen de Los Desamparados, sus inmensas esculturas, sus mascletas, y el inmenso placer que les aporta la convivencia, la risa, el comer juntos, el compartir, el celebrar el ciclo interminable de la vida. Fue justamente esta participación, que se vuelve a iniciar el mismo día en que termina, este ritual de nacer y renacer que amarra el tejido social de todo un pueblo, lo que sedujo al holandés Eric Nolte, un hombre de mundo que desde muy joven hizo de Valencia su hogar, y que conoce y participa, tanto como el que más, de todo el entramado que se cuece alrededor de Las Fallas, de Valencia y su cultura.

The Fallas combine all kinds of arts, crafts and disciplines: design, sculpture, painting, building, embroidery and sewing, pyrotechnics, the art of cuisine, music, flower arrangement – topped off by the devotion of a whole community to their patron saint, Our Lady of the Forsaken, by immense sculptures, the sound fireworks called mascletaes, and the immense pleasure of sharing a festival with others, cooking and eating together, laughing together, joining hands and celebrating the interminable cycle of life itself. It was precisely this participation, which rekindles the morning after everything finishes, exemplifying the ritual of birth and rebirth that sustains the social fibre of this community, that attracted Dutchman Eric Nolte, a man of the world who made Valencia his home from a very early age. It was this spirit of sharing that encouraged him to take part just like everyone else, and enjoy the fabric of fire and tradition that serves as the bedrock of the Fallas festivities, of Valencia and its culture.

Eric llegó a Valencia en 1984 y llegó para quedarse. Aquí formó su familia, educó a sus hijos, hizo sus amigos, desarrolló sus negocios alrededor del mundo, aquí, en Valencia, Eric Nolte ha vivido su vida a plenitud.

Eric came to Valencia in 1984 and came to stay. He formed a family here, brought up his kids, made friends, built up a business that operates around the world. Here, in Valencia, Eric Nolte has lived life to the full.

Tal es la fusión de Eric Nolte con la cultura valenciana, con las Fallas, que su propia hija, la señorita Veronica Nolte fue seleccionada como Madrina de la Fallera Mayor de Valencia en el año 1999 desde donde jugó un intenso rol diplomático, tanto nacional como internacional .

Eric Nolte is so in tune with Valencian culture, with the Fallas, that his own daughter, Veronica Nolte, was chosen as one of the Members of the Court of Honour of the Fallera Mayor of Valencia in the year 1999, where she shared great responsibility fulfilling her role as diplomat for the Fallas on both national and international level.

Fallero apasionado, y vicepresidente de la centenaria Falla La Conserva, una de las más antiguas de la capital Valenciana, Eric señala que “lo que me apasiona de las Fallas es su carácter popular. Tú te pones un blusón de fallero y ya eres uno más. No importa tu condición social, no importa tu apellido. Lo que importa es que eres fallero, esa es tu identidad y eso te hermana con el resto de la comunidad.”

A passionate Fallero and vice president of the centennial Falla La Conserva, one of the oldest in the Valencian capital, Eric says “what I love about the Fallas is their popular character. You put on a Fallero shirt and you’re one of the crowd. Your social condition doesn’t count, your surname doesn’t count. What counts is that you’re a Fallero – that’s your identity, that’s what twins you with everyone else in the community.”

Las fallas, que se celebran cada año al inicio de la Primavera, están organizadas alrededor de los 388 barrios valencianos. Cada barrio planea sus fallas, la de los adultos, y la de los niños, y trabaja en su preparación durante todos los días del año en casonas comunales llamadas casals, donde se reúnen las distintas comisiones de vecinos para planificar y compartir. Estas reuniones de barrio en que los niños corren alborozados mientras los adultos van preparando la magna celebración, es algo pocas veces visto en la Europa contemporánea, que hace de las Fallas valencianas un acto de compañerismo y unidad. Otra de las cosas que apasionan a Eric Nolte sobre las Fallas, es que “unen a cuatro generaciones!” Nieto, padre, hijo y abuelo, todos participan sin distingo de edad, todos encuentran en la falla un espacio para desarrollar su creatividad y disfrutar de la fiesta. “La guerra es para los tontos”, nos dice Nolte “¿Para qué destruir cuando hay tanto que crear?” Y las Fallas son un ejemplo maravilloso de lo que el ser humano es capaz de hacer y de dar. ¡El mundo es para crear! Para eso hemos nacido.

The Fallas festivity, held each year at the start of spring, is organised in all 388 boroughs of the metropolitan area of Valencia. Each district erects its Fallas monument – one for adults, and a smaller version for the children. They work on their designs for a whole year before the celebration itself, with meetings being held in the communal houses called casals – the hubs where neighbours congregate to plan and share in the fun. These neighbourhood meetings in which the children run around playing while the adults make preparations for the festival is something you don’t often see in contemporary Europe, and this is what makes Valencia’s Fallas an act of companionship and unity. Another aspect that Eric Nolte loves about the Fallas is that “they bring together four entire generations!” Grandchild, parent, son and grandfather – all take part without age distinctions; all find their own place in the Fallas festival to unleash their creativity and have the best of times. “War is crazy,” comments Nolte. “Why destroy when there is so much to create?” And the Fallas are a marvellous example of what human beings are capable of creating and giving. The world is for creating. That’s what we were born for!

Una nueva actuación por Sophia Gruzdys

Inspirada por el plan general de Ámsterdam para su Zona Portuaria Este, donde se está iniciando la regeneración urbana a la vez que se procura mantener su espíritu original, una nueva generación de arquitectos holandeses ha remodelado la vida de las ciudades actuales.

A new performance La cultura postindustrial de las ciudades resalta la proximidad y la diversidad en vez de la distancia y la exclusividad, y se deleita en la creación de nuevas formas y nuevos espacios urbanos. Esta zona de Ámsterdam presenta una de las arquitecturas más sobresalientes de Europa, que ha transformado una serie de islas - pertenecientes a una zona industrial portuaria - en un distrito donde las residencias, la cultura y los espacios recreativos coexisten en armonía. Adriaan Geuze, fundador de la oficina de West 8 en Rotterdam, diseñó la isla Borneo Sporenburg, inspirándose en las aldeas de la Zuiderzee, donde las pequeñas casitas íntimas crean una zona de alta densidad de viviendas que sin embargo no agobia a los habitantes. The culture of the post-industrial city emphasizes proximity and diversity over distance and exclusivity, and delights in the creation of new urban forms and spaces. This area now boasts some of most exciting new architecture in Europe. The series of islands has been transformed from an industrial harbour area to a district of housing, cultural and recreation spaces. Adriaan Geuze, founder of West 8’s office in Rotterdam, designed the Borneo Sporenburg island, inspired by villages of the Zuiderzee, where small and intimate houses shape a framework for high density living that meets the needs of ordinary households. Architect and urban planner Jo Coenen planned huge housing blocks for the KNSM Island, and invited German architects Hans Kollhoff and Christian Rapp designed them using the old harbour scale as a reference. Winy Maas of MVRDV, along with founding members Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries, have shaped new urban patterns in Amsterdam. No visit to the city is complete without popping into the MVRDV’s Lloyd Hotel, located on the River IJ.

Se recortó un enorme hueco en este hotel de estilo años 1920 para crear un comedor público y zona común para los clientes, con espacios íntimos para reuniones, lectura, trabajo, y restauración. Mitad museo y mitad embajada cultural, este hotel facilita a sus invitados los intercambios con toda la red de arte y artistas de Ámsterdam. Un poco más al oeste se encuentra el impresionante puente Zouthhavenbrug, de Hans van Heeswijk, que da acceso al auditorio Muziekgebouw diseñado por el equipo danés 3XN. Este edificio enlaza las orillas del río recientemente urbanizadas con el corazón de la vieja ciudad a través de una explanada pública y un café exterior acristalado con vistas maravillosas. En los años 70 del siglo XX, los diseñadores postmodernos de Luxemburgo Rob y Leon Krier intentaron reinventar las maneras en las que el vivir y trabajar podrían crear nuevas esquemas urbanos y devolver la ciudad a sus habitantes. Hoy, como metrópolis postindustrial, Ámsterdam ha tenido éxito en la adaptación de su actuación sin destruir su identidad original.

A giant void was cut out of this 1920s-era hotel, creating a public dining room and communal area for guests, intimate spaces for meetings, reading, working, dining and drinking. Part museum and cultural embassy, the hotel links guests to a network of art and artists in Amsterdam. Further west is the stunning Zouthhavenbrug bridge by Hans van Heeswijk, providing access to the Muziekgebouw concerthall designed by Denmark’s 3XN. The building links the newly developed river banks to the heart of the old city by creating a public concourse and café along a vista-rich glass façade outdoor café. In the 1970s, post-modern Luxembourg designers Rob and Leon Krier attempted to re-stitch ways that living and working could create new urban patterns and return the city to its inhabitants. Now, as post-industrialist metropolis, Amsterdam has successfully retuned its performance without destroying its original score.

The fun of creating En los últimos años mi equipo y yo hemos decorado muchas casas y lugares públicos, como establecimientos de hostelería de moda… Y la decoración de estos sitios “in” no es solo una tarea profesional, sino que realmente cambia tu ciudad… Diseñamos el Club Jimmy Woo muy de moda (sigue siendo el lugar número uno para el clubbing de la ciudad), el Club Arc, el Lounge Café Suzy Wong y el restaurante chino Chang I. Todos estos lugares, después de varios años, siguen teniendo mucho éxito y me encanta visitarlos… Me siento muy orgulloso cuando veo que los periódicos internacionales mencionan uno o más sitios que hemos diseñado en sus relaciones de “lugares in de Ámsterdam”. Te sientas como si hubieses dado a tu ciudad tu toque personal, haciendo que sea un lugar más bonito no solo para ti, sino para todos los residentes de Ámsterdam y para los turistas también.

Over the last few years my team and I have decorated lots of houses and public places, such as trendy catering establishments… Decorating these trendy hotspots is not just a professional task; it actually changes your own city and that makes it much more interesting… We designed the trendy Jimmy Woo Club (this place is still the city’s No. 1 clubbing hotspot), Club Arc, Lounge Cafe Suzy Wong and the Chang I Chinese restaurant. All these places, several years on, are still highly successful and I love going to them… I feel very proud when I see that the international papers mention one or more places designed by us on their lists of “Amsterdam’s in-spots…” It feels like you have given the city your own personal touch, making it a nicer place not only for you, but also for all the residents of Amsterdam and the tourists too…

But our work area is not just limited to Amsterdam and it´s surroundings; we now work worldwide. We are currently working on hotel concepts in Thailand, negotiating with club owners in Moscow and creating conceptual designs for several restaurants in the Middle East…

Quizá exagero cuando digo que con nuestros diseños hacemos que el mundo sea algo más agradable, pero es así como te sientes… Sería fantástico empezar a trabajar con hoteles o restaurantes internacionales de alto nivel, y estoy seguro que lo vamos a lograr muy pronto…

Maybe I exaggerate when I say that with our designs we make the world nicer, but that’s the way it feels… It would be fantastic to start working with international high-profile hotels or restaurants, and I’m sure we will soon…

Mientras tanto, seguimos negociando nuestro tercer libro y cumpliendo con todos los proyectos privados que hemos llevado a cabo en los últimos años. Esta vez me gustaría escribir un libro sobre las casas junto al mar: villas metropolitanas playeras, por Eric Kuster. Son casas que hacen que la vida de sus dueños sea mucho más bonita también…

In the meantime we continue to negotiate our third book and all the private projects we’ve carried out over the last few years. BOUNDLESS IMAGINATION FROM WARENDORF In addition to a colourful repertoire of Warendorf and Starck by Warendorf kitchens, a floating kitchen design by Warendorf will be shown for the first time as a special highlight at the LivingKitchen 2011: the “Swing” kitchen in terra. Nothing missing. An interview with Monic Hendrickx Pero no todo en Monic Hendrickx gira en torno a su profesión y sus triunfos individuales.

But not everything in Monic Hendrickx revolves around her profession or her individuals triumphs.

Nacida en diciembre de 1966, en Stevensbeek, Provincia de NoordBrabant, esta holandesa, amiga de sus amigos, amante de los viajes y de las aventuras, sencilla, locuaz, íntegra y madre de una niña; dedica parte de su vida a trabajar en la Fundación Small Change, creada por ella misma luego de una larga estadía en Sudáfrica.

Born in December 1966 in Stevensbeek, in Noord-Brabant province, this warm Dutchwoman, friendly, loquacious, open, an enthusiastic traveler and adventurer, and mother of a child, dedicates part of her life to working at the Small Change Foundation, created by her after a long stay in South Africa.

¿QUÉ PASÓ AHÍ MONIC? ¿QUÉ TE IMPULSÓ A CREAR LA FUNDACIÓN SMALL CHANGE? Hace dos años, mientras estaba trabajando en una serie para la TV en Sudáfrica, fui a visitar varias barriadas extremadamente pobres, conocidas como “townships”. El nivel de miseria que existe en estos asentamientos no tiene palabras. Hay cientos y cientos de miles de niños maravillosos y capaces que crecen sin ninguna oportunidad. Estar allí en persona, vivir esa experiencia me conmovió profundamente y despertó en mí un intenso deseo de ayudar para que algunos de estos niños lograran una vida más feliz. Ellos tienen el talento, la energía, la capacidad, pero no tienen los medios para salir adelante. Así nació la Fundación. Es pequeña pero cada año ejecutamos proyectos muy bellos que parten del talento de los propios chicos. Por ejemplo tenemos un taller permanente de danza. Ellos son bailarines increíbles y también cantantes! Y nosotros procuramos ayudarles para que desarrollen esa capacidad, que se liberen de las drogas, que tengan una motivación y crean en un futuro. El trabajo en esta fundación me llena de vitalidad e inspiración!

WHAT HAPPENED THERE, MONIC? WHAT MADE YOU SET UP THE SMALL CHANGE FOUNDATION? Two years ago, while I was working in a TV Series in South Africa, I went to visit one of those extremely poor neighborhoods, the ones they call townships. The sheer misery I saw there is impossible to express in words. There are hundreds and hundreds of thousands of marvelous children, perfectly capable children, who grow up with no opportunities at all. Being there in person, and seeing how they live, affected me deeply and awoke an intense desire to help them somehow so that some of these children could look forward to a happier life. They have talent, energy, abilities, but there are no means for them to succeed. That’s how the foundation was born. It is small still, but each year we carry out fantastic projects to encourage these children to develop their talents. For example, we have an ongoing dance workshop. These kids are incredible dancers and singers too! And we try to help them to develop their talents further, break free from drug abuse and violence, and believe in a better future. Working with the foundation totally fills me with vitality and inspiration!

¿QUÉ TE LLENA MÁS EN ESTE MOMENTO DE TU VIDA, EL SERVICIO A LOS DEMÁS O TU CARRERA DE ACTRIZ? En realidad yo no lo veo como un servicio, porque yo también recibo muchísimo y aprendo cada día. En verdad todo lo que hago en este momento se complementa entre sí. Mi trabajo como actriz, mi maternidad, mi relación con mi compañero, todo está integrado y sin duda, el trabajo en la fundación es una parte muy importante de mi vida. Ser actriz, actuar, es realmente un trabajo muy hermoso, de equipo, en el que cuentas una historia para que la gente la disfrute, pero demanda toda tu energía, porque estás sacando lo que tienes adentro y proyectándolo hacia afuera. Por el contrario, cuando trabajas para ayudarle a la gente, el proceso es al revés, interiorizas lo que ves en el fuera y en ese sentido es un trabajo que alimenta tu espíritu, que te da muchísimo. Son dos cosas diferentes, y ambas forman parte de mí. ¿CUÁL ES TU META? ¿QUÉ QUIERES ALCANZAR? ¿QUÉ ES LO QUE MÁS FELIZ TE HACE EN LA VIDA? Soy una persona curiosa, me interesa mucho la gente, la naturaleza, me gusta aprender de ellas, y en general, me siento muy bien conmigo misma. Claro que también tengo mi lado oscuro, miedos que a veces me sobrecogen y se apoderan de un espacio en mí hasta que los confronto interiormente y se desvanecen. Ser consciente de lo que me pasa por dentro me libera del miedo y me ayuda a ser feliz. Creo que cuando más feliz soy es cuando estoy en el momento presente, viviendo lo que la vida me da en ese instante. Esa es una meta mía, vivir en el presente, en el ahora. En realidad soy una mujer profundamente afortunada. Doy mucho y recibo mucho. No me hace falta nada.

WHAT IS MORE FULFILLING FOR YOU AT THIS TIME, YOUR SERVICE TO OTHERS AS YOU DO IN THE FOUNDATION, OR YOUR CAREER AS AN ACTRESS? To tell you the truth, I don’t really see it as service because I also receive a lot in return and I learn more with every new day. In fact, everything I’m doing at the moment seems to fit in and complement other things. My work as an actress, being a mother, the relationship with my partner – it’s all integrated and undoubtedly my work in the foundation is also an important part of my life. Being an actress, acting, is really a beautiful job; it’s a team effort in which you tell a story so that people can enjoy it, but it also demands all your energy, because you have to bring out into the open everything you have inside. On the other hand, when you are working at helping others, the process is reversed: you interiorize what you see in the outside world, and in that sense it’s a job that feeds your spirit, and gives you a lot. They are two different things, but they’re both part of me. WHAT IS YOUR GOAL? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACHIEVE? WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY IN THIS LIFE? I have a great deal of curiosity. I’m very interested in people and in nature, and I learn a lot from both, and in general, I feel OK with myself. But of course, I also have a dark side – fears that sometimes overcome me and try to posses me, until I confront them and deal with them so they slip away. Being conscious of what is going on inside me liberates me from fear and helps me to be happier. I think I’m at my best when I live in the present, experiencing what life has in store for me at that precise moment. That’s really my goal in life: to live in the present, in the here and now. For the rest, really, I would say that I am a very fortunate woman. I give a lot and receive a lot. Nothing is missing from my life.

Pero mi experiencia es que eso sólo es nuestro punto de vista nacional. A nuestros clientes internacionales no les importa donde estamos localizados; ellos sólo quieren Diseño Holandés. Incluso durante un tiempo tuvimos un Director de Arte de Shanghai. Él puso esta guerra territorial en perspectiva. Su meta era trabajar para una agencia holandesa. Y él nos eligió a nosotros. He really put this whole turf war in perspective. His goal was to work for a Dutch agency. And he chose us. So it’s not so much where you work, but what you contribute to. And we’re in the business to improve yours.” I DETECT A STRONG COMPETITIVE DRIVE. “Oh absolutely! It’s a cut-throat business. One day you’re in and the next you’re out. That’s why we always try to leave a lasting impression. In the end what survives you, is your reputation. And our reputation derives directly from the success of our clients. Our motto is competitive communication. So essentially we harness our competitive drive to support our clients in realising their ambitions.”

SEGURO QUE TODAS LAS AGENCIAS PUBLICITARIAS DIRÍAN LO MISMO. “Sí, las mejores agencias lo harían. Pero muchas de ellas están centradas en lo que hacen y no en el por qué lo hacen. Nadie cuenta el número de anuncios que has hecho; sólo recuerdan la huella que has dejado. Así que al contrario de lo que muchos en nuestro negocio creen, la creatividad no es hacer diseños para conseguir premios; es la habilidad para adaptarte al entorno. No me malinterpretes, somos muy conscientes de que la creatividad es una parte muy importante en nuestro negocio. Pero creemos que debería contribuir a algo. Al desarrollo. Al cambio. Una organización es como un organismo. Se mueve, interactúa, se aparea y se alimenta de otras organizaciones. Algunas están más arriba en la cadena alimenticia que otras ¿Y por qué algunas organizaciones crecen donde otras están en peligro de extinción? ¡Es puro Darwinismo! Y de acuerdo con Darwin no es la especie más fuerte la que sobrevive, ni la más inteligente. Es la que más se adapta al cambio.”

OK, ¿PERO QUÉ CREES QUE HACE QUE UNA ORGANIZACIÓN TENGA MÁS ÉXITO QUE OTRA? “La marca. Tan simple como eso. Los consumidores no eligen productos, eligen marcas. Un producto puede ser copiado por un competidor, una marca es única. Un producto es transitorio, una marca es atemporal. Las investigaciones confirman que los consumidores eligen deliberadamente una marca en base a la promesa que sustenta. Los clientes consideran la marca como el bien más preciado de una organización. Quieren verla protegida, alimentada, incluso querida. En los buenos y malos tiempos. Una marca es más que un logotipo. Y la promesa de la marca es algo más que un título en un anuncio. Está arraigada en el alma de la organización, determina su identidad y su comportamiento. Y su atractivo hace que la gente quiera formar parte del club. Interna y externamente. Creemos que la marca es la base para el éxito. Y es por eso que hacemos lo que hacemos. Construimos marcas. SURELY EVERY ADVERTISING AGENCY WOULD SAY THE SAME. “Yes, the best agencies would. But many are focussed on what they do and not why they do it. Nobody counts the number of ads you run; they just remember the impression you make. So contrary to what many in our trade believe, creativity is not about making prizewinning designs; it is about the ability to adapt to the environment. Don’t get me wrong, we are very aware that creative output is a major part of our business. But we believe it should contribute to something. To development. To change. An organisation is like an organism. It moves, it interacts, it mates and it feeds on other organisations. Some are higher up in the food chain than others. And why is it that some organisations thrive where others are threatened with extinction? It’s pure Darwinism! And according to Darwin it is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”

Customers regard a brand as the most valuable asset of an organisation. They want to see it protected, nourished, cherished even. In good and bad times. A brand is more than a logo. And a brand promise is more than just a heading in an advertisement. It’s ingrained in the soul of the organisation; it determines identity and behaviour. And its allure makes that people want to be part of the club. Internally and externally. We believe a brand is the very foundation for success. And that is why we do what we do. We build brands. A summit of luxury in an exclusive private world of comfort and security where the understanding of luxury goes beyond the material level. Each house is a different story. A different answer to different needs. Blueport allows the happy few to enhance their all-inclusive quality of life. To further strengthen the Blueport brand we advised the client to affiliate with other luxury brands. So we were very pleased that successful Dutch Designer Eric Kuster approached our client to create a design especially for Blueport.”

Tenemos un portafolio de clientes que suponen un reto y un equipo muy dedicado, pero siempre hay algo que desear ¡Yo todavía no he terminado!”

YOU ARE VERY CLEAR ABOUT INITIO BEING AN INTERNATIONAL AGENCY. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WISH FOR? “Of course. I’m very proud of our track record. We were very successful in the branding of an international recycling company. We developed an extensive marketing and communication campaign that helped increasing their turnover from 12 to 96 million in 3 years. We did the whole corporate redesign for a Slovakian tyre manufacturer that has recently entered the top 1000 of global brands. We have a very challenging client portfolio and a very dedicated team, but there is always something to wish for. I’m not done yet!”

The MAHC is a small clinic that accepts no more than 12 patients at a time and functions as a family hotel: cosy rooms, quietness, Swiss quality (high standard hygiene and discrete efficiency) and a minimum of hotel services. It is also secluded and very private. Located in the renovated Pilgerheim Hotel, the clinic has recently built an extension that follows the Vastu rules, that is, the ancient Vedic architecture that resonates with the laws of the Universe. In these new premises the clinic has located some of the treatment rooms as well as living rooms. The MAHC offers a wide range of traditional Ayurvedic treatments (panchakarma) under medical supervision. Some of them are standard – abhyanga, shirodhara, svedana, pizzichili, udvartana, - whereas some are more sophisticated with specific medical indications – patrapottali, takradhara, kati basti, and others. In all of their undertakings, the clinic puts a strong emphasis on Ayurvedic quality and authenticity. But the MAHC Seelisberg offers much more than this, being the only health centre in this part of the world that offers several “complementary” treatments and technologies derived from the Vedic tradition and brought to light by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi himself.

MERU is located in the old Sonnenberg Hotel, built in the 19th century, originally a palace for the high society of the times.

The ultimate aim of Chinese medicine is to re-establish Qi, a person’s vital balance, which when lost upsets physical, emotional, spiritual and mental functions, producing disease. TCM has a broad-based diagnostic methodology that involves an exhaustive physical observation of the entire patient, including taking his or her pulse, and analysing his or her tongue, face, eyes, ears, voice, temperature and even body odours.

Chinese phytotherapy plays a major role in restoring Qi or vital balance. And since the ingredients contain no chemical products or external agents, this kind of therapy has no secondary effects and is highly appreciated for its efficacy and speedy results.

In many of these cases, phytotherapy is a good bet, and Chinese medicine uses a combination of plants including Angelica sinensis, which is primarily used to nourish the blood and realign the transport of Qi.

WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD REJECT THE WORD “GOD”? People are tired of the fear and guilt inculcated by religions. Nobody wants to feel this way and that’s why they flee from this association. The truth is that it is not God people are running away from but from the idea of repression and punishment that so many religions uphold. Deep down the immense majority of people have an intimate and profound connection to the Divine, although for many reasons they keep it to themselves. This connection is natural; it’s part of our Being. The Human Spirit is part of the Divine Spirit; they’re one and the same, and deep down within ourselves, we know this. With A Course in Miracles we can recover this memory of God. There is a very beautiful passage in the book that says: “Listen...perhaps you catch a hint of an ancient state not quite forgotten; dim, perhaps, and yet not altogether unfamiliar, like a song whose name is long forgotten, and the circumstances in which you heard it completely unremembered. Not the whole song has stayed with you, but just a little wisp of melody, attached not to a person or a place or anything particular. But you remember, from just this little part, how lovely the song was, how wonderful the setting where you heard it, and how you loved those who were there and listened with you. The notes are nothing. Yet you have kept them with you, not for themselves, but as a soft reminder of what would make you weep if you remembered how dear it was to you. You could remember, yet you are afraid, believing you would lose the world you learned since then. And yet you know that nothing in the world you learned is half so dear as this.” ACIM. Chapter 21.

Está divido en tres partes: el texto metafísico, las 365 lecciones (una para cada día del año) y el manual para Maestros de Dios. El libro posibilita que la persona que lo estudie y ponga en práctica sus ejercicios, deshaga gradualmente su Ego, que es la fuente de todo sufrimiento. Es un sistema de pensamiento brillante y efectivo que permite deshacer las distorsiones de nuestro sistema de pensamiento egótico, y conduce a la felicidad y al despertar. De hecho, una de las características de los maestros de Dios, es la alegría. O sea que está no es una forma morbosa de espiritualidad, como esas que se fundamentan en el sacrificio y la renuncia. Ni siquiera es una religión. El Curso de Milagros es un curso de estudio del Yo, que se lleva a cabo entre el Jesús y tu. Él es el maestro del Curso de Milagros, él es quien habla en primera persona y queda totalmente claro que el libro fue dictado por él. Por lo tanto, es una forma feliz de espiritualidad y yo creo que está cambiando completamente la manera en que la gente mira al Jesús histórico. A COURSE IN MIRACLES HAS BEEN TRANSLATED INTO MANY LANGUAGES AND THERE ARE CURRENTLY MILLIONS OF COPIES IN THE WORLD. WHY HAS IT EXPANDED SO RAPIDLY? A Course in Miracles is a mind training, designed to break through the blockages that make us believe that we are separated from our Divine nature. He is the teachers of the Course in Miracles; he is the one who talks in the first person and it is absolutely clear that the book was dictated by him. Therefore, it is a happy method of spirituality and I believe it is completely changing the way people look at the historical Jesus. The incredible popularity of A Course in Miracles is due to the fact that it makes people happier! And that, in the final analysis, is what we are all looking for.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST VALUABLE TEACHING IN A COURSE IN MIRACLES? HOW DOES IT HELP PEOPLE TO BE HAPPIER? A Course in Miracles is a holographic book in which all the teachings reflect one another. But without a doubt, one of the most essential teachings in the book is forgiveness. But not the forgiveness based on sin, guilt or punishment, as occurs in religion or in feeling superior over another person because I am so good that I forgive their serious errors. It’s not that type of forgiveness, but rather one that teaches us to look beyond the mistakes, to look at that point in which we are all the Son of God and share the same Father. Do you want happiness, a quiet mind, a certainty of purpose, and a sense of worth and beauty that transcends the world? Do you want care and safety, and the warmth of sure protection always? Do you want a quietness that cannot be disturbed, a gentleness that never can be hurt, a deep abiding comfort, and a rest so perfect it can never be upset? ¿ES POSIBLE ALCANZAR LA ILUMINACIÓN SI SE PRACTICAN LAS ENSEÑANZAS DEL CURSO DE MILAGROS? ¿ES ESO LO QUE SIGNIFICA ESTE CURSO? ¿ES ESE EL MILAGRO? Sí y no. En este curso nos abrimos a la realidad de que somos el Hijo de Dios, que participamos de su Naturaleza Divina y que por lo tanto, ya estamos iluminados. No hay nada qué alcanzar ¡Eso es lo maravilloso! IS IT POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE ILLUMINATION BY PRACTICING THE TEACHINGS OF A COURSE IN MIRACLES? IS THAT WHAT THIS COURSE MEANS? IS THAT THE MIRACLE? Yes and no. In this course we open ourselves to the reality that we are the Son of God; we participate of His Divine Nature and therefore we are already enlightened. There is nothing to achieve. That’s the marvellous thing! It is a road that exacts no sacrifice or penitence, and doesn’t even demand that we learn special things, as they do in many movements around in the world today, which assure us that the more we learn, the more spiritual we will become. That is not true! The only thing we need to do to enjoy enlightenment is to break down the internal barriers we have constructed against Love, break through the blockages, do away with the ego. A Course in Miracles makes us invert our beliefs about ourselves and the world; it’s an inner revolution that reveals that the most important thing is what we project with our minds and not what we see with our eyes. The mind is like a projector and the physical reality we see, is the effect of that projection, not the cause. Once we understand this we can realise that the “external” universe is an illusion. Einstein described human experience as an illusion of consciousness. Understanding the illusory nature of the physical universe is essential to discovering how the secret of spiritual illumination is right there within us. That is a miracle. We no longer feel like victims, we stop blaming others, we no longer believe there is a reality out there that attacks us or against which we have to defend ourselves. With this consciousness we recover our responsibility for our own lives, we become the protagonists, we become free and powerful, and our life is transformed into whatever we want it to be.

Una diosa con los pies en la tierra

En el valle de Jalón , muy cerca de Altea, y rodeada de viñas y almendros, se encuentra la casa y taller de una artista holandesa, cuyo exquisito trabajo es resultado de toda una vida dedicada al arte. por Patricia Howell

In Jalón Valley, very close to Altea, surrounded by vineyards and almond tree orchards sits the house and workshop of a Dutch artist whose creations are the sum total of a life dedicated to art.

A goddess down to earth Se trata de Thea de Waard, cuyo amor por España, por su luz, sus colores, su gente y su cultura, la hacen invertir aquí gran parte de su tiempo, pintando y esculpiendo bajo el azul mediterráneo que abunda en esta tierra.

Her name is Thea de Waard, and her love for Spain, with its light, colour, people and culture, makes her spend the lion’s share of her time here, painting and sculpting under a blue Mediterranean backdrop that always inspires.

Thea de Waard, menuda y etérea, es una artista con los pies hundidos en la tierra. En eso radica la profunda espiritualidad de su trabajo. En el tributo que rinde a la creación y que se expresa, como en un juego de niños, en la re-invención de lo existente desde una concepción profundamente íntima.

Thea de Waard, slim and ethereal, is an artist with her feet sunk on the earth.. That is the spiritual core of her work, for she pays tribute to Creation itself, reinventing reality, like children do in their games, from a deep intimate conception.

Ocres sacados del rojo de la tierra, oros y verdes clorofilas, piedras, raíces, caracoles, hierros y viejos instrumentos de labranza, todo sirve, todo cumple el propósito creativo, todo puede ayudarle a expresar la poesía que sus ojos encuentran en la tierra, y que sus manos reinventan, ya con pinturas y lienzos, ya con mazo y cincel sobre las piedras. En sus pinturas, Thea no intenta recrear la realidad. Sus obras son más bien la expresión de espacios interiores que se inspiran y reconocen en la naturaleza, sentimientos de unidad del todo con el Todo, en los que la artista es el puente que conecta lo material con lo invisible. Por eso la obra de Thea de Waard despierta un estado interior que va más allá de los sentidos, una exaltación, un reconocimiento personal en el que tierra y cielo se conjuntan en el lienzo y en el alma de quien disfruta de ello.

Ochres taken from the red soil, gold and chlorophyll greens, stones, roots, snails, iron objects and old farm tools… they all serve to fulfil her creative impulse; they all help to express the poetry that Thea’s eyes find in the land, the poetry that her hands reinterpret, either on canvas and in paint, either with hammer and chisel applied to stone. In her paintings, Thea does not try to reproduce reality. Her works, instead, are an expression of inner spaces that are inspired by and acknowledge nature; feelings of oneness with the world, with the All, in which the artist is a mere bridge that connects the tangible to the invisible. This is why Thea de Waard’s works awaken an inner state that goes beyond the senses; they promote an exaltation, a personal experience in which Heaven and Earth are summoned on canvas and in the soul of the spectator as well.

Light and poetry Uno de ellos, el gran poeta y pintor holandés Lucebert, vivió durante largos períodos aquí, en la campiña alteana, en la pequeña aldea de San Roque, entre 1965 y 1967.

One of these, the great Dutch poet and painter Lucebert, stayed here often between 1965 and 1967, settling in the Altea countryside in the village of San Roque.

Nacido en Ámsterdam en 1924, el carismático Lucebert fue una figura imponente en la poesía europea de la post guerra, al tiempo que autor de una obra plástica de tremenda fascinación y creatividad.

Born in Amsterdam in 1924, the charismatic figure of Lucebert was a major reference in European post-war poetry, also becoming a notable name in the arts for his tremendously fascinating creativity.

Fue miembro fundador del grupo vanguardista CoBrA (Copenague, Bruselas, Ámsterdam) el cual reunió a grandes, escultores, poetas y pintores como Corneille, Constant y Appel, que reivindicaron la libertad en el arte, el quehacer artístico espontáneo y la expresión de la fantasía y el color.

Lucebert was a founding member of the avant-garde CoBrA group (Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam), which brought together other great sculptors, poets and painters such as Corneille, Constant and Appel, who all championed freedom in art, spontaneity and the unfettered expression of fantasy and colour.

A lo largo de su vida, este prolífero artista recibió reconocimientos de calibre mundial, tanto por su obra poética como por su fecunda obra plástica, participando en grandes certámenes como la Documenta de Kassel, la Primera Bienal de París -donde fue premiado- y Vitalita nell’Arte, en Venecia, así como en la International Exhibition de Pittsburgh en 1961. En España su obra se expuso en la galería Juana Mordó de Madrid en 1977.

Throughout his life, this prolific artist received world-famous acknowledgements of both his poetic works and his profuse artistic creations, taking part in many shows such as the Documenta in Kassel, the First Biennial in Paris – where he received an award – and the Vitalita nell’Arte in Venice, as well as the International Exhibition in Pittsburgh in 1961. In Spain his works were showcased at the Juana Mordó Gallery in Madrid in 1977.

En sus largas estancias en estas tierras, mantenía contacto con pocos amigos y entre ellos, uno entrañable, el pintor español Antonio Saura, quien consideraba a Lucebert “su alma gemela del Norte”. La obra plástica de Lucebert se exhibe en prestigiosas galerías y museos del mundo. En Holanda, el museo de arte moderno Stedelijk Museum posee una vasta colección de su trabajo y en España, la Fundación Antonio Pérez con sede en la provincia de Cuenca, tiene en exhibición permanente algunas valiosas obras de Lucebert, tanto en el Museo San Clemente como en la propia ciudad de Cuenca. Lucebert muere en Alkmaar, Holanda, el 19 de mayo de 1994, a la edad de 69 años.

Lucebert was much in love with Spain, and in particular with the Levante region, where he set up his studio – his little shelter from the world. During his long stays in these parts of the world, he befriended few people, but among these he forged a close relationship with the Spanish painter Antonio Saura, who considered Lucebert to be his “twin soul from the North”. Lucebert’s artistic works are on show today at prestigious galleries and museums around the world. In Holland the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art contains a vast collection of his works, and in Spain, the Antonio Pérez Foundation, headquartered in the province of Cuenca, has a permanent exhibition of some valuable works by Lucebert, both in the Graphic Works Museum in the town of San Clemente and in the city of Cuenca itself. La fundación Rosa Spier Huis es una residencia única en el mundo, diseñada para albergar a artistas y científicos de la tercera edad, cuyo trabajo haya tenido un significado importante para la sociedad holandesa.

The Rosa Spier Huis Foundation is a one-of-a-kind residence in the entire world, designed to host elderly artists and scientists whose work has been of special importance to Dutch society. Gratitude and dignity La Residencia cuenta con salas de exposiciones, bibliotecas, talleres para trabajo plástico, sala de conciertos y hermosos jardines, y se encuentra en constante actividad. Su agenda cultural incluye excelentes exposiciones de pintura y escultura, obras de teatro y conciertos.

The house has rooms for exhibitions, a library, workshops for the arts, a concert hall and exquisite gardens, and it is always busy with something or other. Its cultural agenda includes outstanding painting and sculpture exhibitions, plays and concerts.

Renombrados científicos, escritores, músicos y pintores conviven en este espacio - lo que les permite mantenerse activos y estar acompañados en lo que ellos mismo definen como una gran familia de amigos y colegas.

Ubicada en el hermoso municipio de Laren, en la provincia de Noord Holland, Rosa Spier Huis fue una iniciativa de Rosa Spier, arpista y mujer de gran carisma, quien se se propuso crear un hogar para que los artistas mayores continuarán siendo productivos en un contexto digno y protegido.

Located in the picturesque municipality of Laren, in the province of Noord Holland, this artists’ home was an initiative set in gear by Rosa Spier, a charismatic harpist who proposed that older artists should have a place to call their own where they can continue to be productive in a dignified and cared-for context.

Pronto surge la Fundación Spier Huis que poco a poco va tomando forma y apoyo, y a pesar de que la señora Spier muere en 1967, su amiga Henriette Polack-Schwarz , gran entusiasta y seguidora de la idea, abre las puertas de Rosa Spier Huis en el año 1969. Más de cuarenta años después, en Rosa Spier Huis conviven aproximadamente setenta personas, cada una de las cuales cuenta con un apartamento de dos habitaciones, cocina, baño, terraza y un exquisito jardín comunitario.

The Rosa Spier Huis Foundation quickly flourished and gained support, despite the demise of Ms Spier in 1967, after which her friend Henriette Polack-Schwarz enthusiastically took up the baton and followed through with the idea, opening the doors to Rosa Spier Huis in 1969. Over 40 years later, Rosa Spier Huis is home to some 70 artists, who each have a small two-room apartment with kitchen, bath and terrace and a beautiful communal garden.

Dianne Reeves (octubre de 1956) es de Detroit, la cuna del estilo Motown - a Detroit se le llama la “Motor Town” por su profusión de industrias automovilística - territorio de la música soul, de Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, The Temptations, de Diana Ross & the Supremes o Aretha Franklin, la reina del Motown Sound. Y cuando Dianne canta, se le nota la influencia de su cuna y que lleva la música en las venas.

Dianne Reeves (October 1956) is from Detroit, the cradle of Motown (Detroit is called the “Motor Town” because of its automobile industry), the territory of soul music, of the likes of Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, The Temptations, Diana Ross & The Supremes and Aretha Franklin, the Queen of the Motown Sound. And when Dianne sings, you can tell she’s been touched by this city and carries the music in her veins.

This young lady of 54 was absolutely dazzling when I saw her at the 34th Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival last year, with a warm, fresh and happygo-lucky performance in which she deployed a vast array of musical styles. Her charming voice is accompanied by the expressiveness of her candid, beautiful face, which contributes greatly to this great singer’s power of musical seduction.

Or just go to YouTube and listen to “You Go to my Head”, from her show at the Baltic Jazz Festival 2004, where she was lucky enough to have Roy Hargrove accompanying her for this performance, recorded live, blowing his soul out of a flugelhorn (a trumpet with a warm deep tone). Roy Hargrove is a true master in setting the stage for ballads with this instrument.

This wine cellar, bodega in Spanish, makes wines of outstanding quality. But today… let’s focus on its rosé brew, Cesilia Rosé, perhaps one of the finest in the country.

Hablamos de un rosado diferente, muy al estilo francés, cosa lógica si pensamos que su enólogo, Sebastien Boudon es de origen bordelés.

A curious ensemble of two varieties – Merlot (the emblematic grape of Pomerol, France) and the very Mediterranean Monastrell – are brought together to create this light, elegant, complex rosé. This is a rosé with a difference, compared to the usual Spanish pinks: very French, which is logical seeing that the bodega’s oenologist, Sebastien Boudon, hails from Bordeaux.

This wine is first made separately, with the Merlot and the Monastrell being processed on their own, with a brief phase in casks to give them greater expressiveness and creaminess, and then a crianza low-temperature ageing together in stainless steel tanks to achieve the fusion of both varieties and highlight their elegance and refinement. After racking the result into designer bottles, these master winemakers achieve a highly-praised rosé, with only 8,000 bottles being produced. That’s the story of Cesilia Rosé, which can be acquired at fine wine shops or straight from the Bodega Heretat de Cesilia.

Merluza salvaje con salsa de espinaca Ingredientes: Un trozo (200grs. por pers.) de espalda de merluza Un ramo de espinacas orgánicas Una cebolla Un champiñón 1 ½ dl. caldo pescado 1 dl. aceite de oliva ½ dl. nata líquida Sal y pimienta

Wild hake in spinach sauce Ingredients: A fillet (200 g per pers.) of fresh hake back A sprig of organically-grown spinach One onion One mushroom 1 ½ dl. fish stock 1 dl. olive oil ½ dl. liquid cream Salt and pepper

Preparación salsa : - Cocer la espinaca bien (no al dente) en agua muy salada. Sacar y pasar a agua con hielo para que conserve color y consistencia, escurrir con la mano y guardar. - Freir en el aceite la cebolla picada (que no suelte color), mezclar con el caldo de pescado y la nata, sal y pimienta al gusto. - Poner mezcla en la batidora e ir echando la espinaca poco a poco (para evitar que se haga un puré) hasta obtener una consistencia líquida espesa. Preparación de la merluza: - Aliñar con sal y pimienta al gusto - Pintar la piel con aceite y poner sobre la plancha (del lado de la piel) 2-3 minutos. - Pintar un plato con mantequilla y colocar con delicadeza la merluza con la piel arriba, 2 minutos aprox. a 180 grados. - Freímos brevemente el champiñón. Emplatado: La merluza al centro con piel arriba - encima el champiñón. La salsa de espinaca calentita a un lado Guarnición al gusto

Preparing the sauce: - Boil the spinach well (it must be soft) in very salty water. Skim out and place in iced water to preserve colour and consistency, drain and set aside. - Chop the onion and fry in the olive oil (don’t let it colour the oil), mix with the fish stock and cream, and salt and pepper to taste. - Place the mixture in the beater and mix in the spinach little by little (don’t let it purée) until the liquid thickens. Preparing the hake: - Salt and pepper. - Paint the skin with oil and place on grill (skin side down) for 2-3 minutes. - Grease a plate with butter and gently place the fillet on it, skin up, and oven bake for about 2 minutes at approximately 180 º. - Briefly fry the mushroom. Serving: Place the hake in the middle of the plate, skin up, and the mushroom on top. The warm spinach sauce on one side.
