So here we are. Finding ourselves having revolved around the sun yet again. In what will be the foul year of our lord 2026. That being said the best way to move forward in life is to look drunkenly backwards over our shoulder at the vomit pooling onto the pavement and remembering what a wonderful, tasty kebab it used to be.

With that beautiful metaphor over with, I bring you the best of 2025......

D. Gilmore Out of Step UK

Acceptance is a Leeds-based black metal band, formerly known as Fatalist. They blend intense, atmospheric sounds with emotional themes of grief, anxiety and hope.

Their 2025 debut album, Crucifixion of Orchids, has earned praise in the underground scene for its raw, therapeutic depth.

First of all, congratulations on the new record! Could you tell me a little about the albums concept?

After a long battle with cancer and dementia M.T.’s dad died in 2023. He fought it constantly but it was a battle he couldn’t win. He was a good, honest, selflessly kind and reliable man that had spent years suffering not just from the disease but from the agony of no longer being able to do the things he loved which was helping and supporting his family and friends.

It’s a struggle to discuss this kind of trauma because the emotions are so brutally complex and difficult to articulate. Instead all the feelings of loss were poured into the lyrics and themes of these five songs. The concept of martyrdom looms large, as well as the horror and oppression of religion and the bitter inevitability of our fate.

This is also heavily informed by our love of bleak cinema and every song uses references to films that partially inspired them. The album cover is taken from Carl Th. Dreyers’ The Passion of Joan of Arc. Inspiration was also taken from the desperately hopeless 2018 film Aniara. We also reference Ordet, Saint Maud, Scorceses’ Cape Fear, Andrei Rublev, Tokyo Story and The Return. The title of the album actually comes from when C.C. was travelling in Fiji.

During a tour of the botanical gardens he was shown a flower called a Crucifix Orchid but he misheard it as a Crucifixion of Orchids and the phrase just perfectly sums up the metaphorical themes of the album.

The albums last track “Paradise” takes up over a third of the records run time and is quite the departure from the rest of the songs. Could you talk about the story behind that track specifically?

Catharsis. Coming to terms with death. Understanding that existence is an endless struggle and that our significance is only relative to ourselves, our own experiences and deeds in a vast, dark and uncaring universe. The song brings our drone and post rock influences to the forefront. We wanted a more drawn out and expansive feeling to go out on a wave of transcendence. It took a long time to develop the structure and the song went through many changes before it felt as organic and ritualistic as we’d imagined. Every man must go through hell to reach his paradise.

Other than music what do you take inspiration from? Movies, books etc.

Through out most of the record you appear to be channelling that early 90s Norwegian Black metal sound. What bands from that era did you take influence from?

It’s hard to escape the influence of the Norwegians and with good reason. The biggest has to be Emperor. They are untouchable. They have a truly flawless discography and are one of the greatest bands in extreme music. Immortal, early Darkthrone and Gorgoroth are also formative bands in the journey of any black metal fan. As individuals we take influence from other places and genres.

Transcendent black metal artists such as Weakling, Fell Voices, Dispirit, Ash Borer and Blut Aus Nord are a constant reference along with bands entirely outside the blackened spectrum such as Mogwai, My Bloody Valentine, Sigur Ros, Swans, Melvins, Mount Eerie and Khanate.

We all share a deep love of cinema.

Every song is littered with references to films that carry a relatable metaphor to the meaning and emotion behind the music. It goes way beyond just the lyrics. The music itself is energised by the power of film and image. We are trying to capture that feeling when you see something in a film so extraordinary that it sears itself into your soul. The first Fatalist album Lunar was a concept album inspired

by Andrzej Zulawski’s transformative science fiction epic On The Silver Globe. Recent watched/rewatched films that will most likely inspire the next batch of songs include: The Human Condition Trilogy, Come & See, Altered States, The Sacrifice & House of The Devil.

I understand this is the band’s first record under the name “Acceptance”.

Previously you were known as “Fatalist”. Could tell me how the death of that band happened and why the change? Is Acceptance a progression from that band or something else entirely?

When C.C. started “Fatalist” he got the band name from a song by Hatred Surge.

He did some research and found no one else using the name (or so he thought) and at first there wasn’t any issues.

Shortly after we got establishing as a regularly gigging band, we became aware of another band called Fatalist emerging out of the scene in Manchester.

Initially we didn’t think there would be much crossover as they play hardcore.

We also attempted to make it obvious by getting a new logo and distinct artwork to avoid confusion.

Unfortunately this didn’t stop them getting tagged in our posts and us getting tagged in theirs. Our proximity and shared inclination to play interesting and eclectic line ups eventually lead to confusion from promoters and fans. This was probably made worse by us taking a brief hiatus as our guitarist spent some time travelling abroad so upon his return, and realising we weren’t married to the name Fatalist, we decided to move on and become Acceptance. It felt like a natural progression at the time and acted as somewhat of a rebirth as it motivated us to finish and record Crucifixion of Orchids and dive deep into the albums aesthetic. It was time to move on from the past and onwards into the void.

Andracca is a UK-based black metal band from Lancashire/North Wales.

They are known for their unforgiving, desolate sound devoted to themes of suffering, grief, and mortality, they draw heavily from the second wave of Norwegian black metal while delivering raw aggression and atmospheric intensity.

The bands last record ("To Bare the Weight of DEATH") came out at the beginning of 2024. Do you have any plans for the follow-up?

At present we have our next record almost wrapped up, with plans to record early in 2026. It is a vast leap forward in dynamics and songwriting, introducing a contrast within the material that elevates the highs and deepens the lows to depths that are as yet unseen. As for subject matter and the specific sound, you'll have to wait and see.

Next March the band will be embarking on what I understand to be your first headlining tour. How do you feel about that? Is there any trepidation building up to it?

Our first headlining tour is a satisfying milestone to reach, and it feels like it's come at the right time. The band is better than ever, the momentum behind us is significant, and the anticipation for new material is higher than ever. We stand on a precipice and we are more than ready to leap into the chasm of potential before us. There is no trepidation.

The artwork you ve used to promote the tour is beautiful! Could you talk a little about how you go about choosing art for records and promotion and how important do you feel it is?

We're all beyond happy with the artwork, masterfully produced by @Ajarondink over on instagram (go and support his work). I had an idea for the general direction I wanted the artwork to take but was struggling to find any artists that really captured it, for a number of weeks.

I sat and thought about it for a while, opened my phone and the first suggested post that came up was one of his works, make of that what you will. It caught my attention right away and I got in touch, and within a week and a half or so, he produced possibly my favourite bit of artwork we've ever had. It perfectly encapsulates what this tour is about.

What I mean by that will become more evident once we're on the road.

I thought I'd be passed the worst of that after losing so many but more deaths have come since so I'm not entirely out of the woods on that front, and ill health for one of my parents is now hitting quite close to home. As to what I find inspiring about the relentless tragedies that one encounters in life, it is the opportunity to show up anyway, look at the 2 year old daughter your cousin left behind, feel the heartache and mercilessly pursue a life that is worth living in spite of those tragedies. A life worth living will no doubt mean something different to everyone, for me personally it doesn't mean being happy all the time, it means dragging myself towards the best version of myself I can be, kicking and screaming if need be. I'm not interested in bartering with reality or myself. It's fucking dreadful at times but every triumph stands in defiance of the forces against me, within and without. Happiness is fleeting, victories are eternal.

Could you tell me a little about the inspiration behind Andracca, what music do you draw from and other than music what do you take inspiration from? Movies, books etc.

I wrote our last album because I was locked into successive cycles of grief as death after death befell my family. Most of these came as shocks due to their sudden nature, and the fact that over half weren't elderly grandparents, but uncles or cousins who were still very young. Writing that album allowed me to process that and incorporate the life lessons fully, by bearing those coffins, staring into empty graves, and watching the bodies get lowered in.

Movies and books in comparison to life itself take a less direct form of inspiration. The above is why I am compelled to make this music, other sources inevitably end up informing my general taste and seep into stylistic considerations. Some of these inspirations also just seem to tap into the same "source" that I feel inextricably linked to, and speak to me in that same language in a peculiar way that is difficult to verbalise.

To me at least, Black Metal is one of the most atmospheric genres on the metal spectrum. Firstly, as a musician how do you capture that feeling on record and as a fan what would you attribute that atmosphere too?

For me I capture it by doing as much of it as physically possible myself. This gives the work a cohesive foundation upon which a structure can be built that houses the intended atmosphere. On every release to date I have handled all mixing and mastering, and recorded all vocals and guitar parts myself. Bass parts have been DI'd and then I've crafted the sound from there. Being so hands on just puts more of myself into the work, and the atmosphere that arises is simply a reflection of my headspace at that time in my life.

As a fan I'd attribute any album that manages to capture an atmosphere to any individual or group effort that manages to get a collective so entirely on the same page, that they are all able to draw from that same source I mentioned earlier.

The best classic examples are undoubtedly Black Sabbath and Slayer.

Neither of those bands would sound anything like their iconic selves if a single member was doing something different. The whole becomes so much more than the sum of its parts when this is achieved.

There are many classic Black Metal bands from our little island, are there anybody you particularly draw inspiration from?

Additionally are there any of your peers you d recommend fans of yours check out?

Abduction aren't only of the best bands in the UK but they're genuinely one of my favourite black metal bands of all time (suck it up A/V), and touring with them was a joy beyond words, as well as an education. Volniir are dear dear friends of mine, and I probably feel more creative kinship with S.V. than anyone else. Given another lifetime and the ability to temper my need for creative control, we'd likely do great in a band together, but alas we're both destined to do our own thing.

Theirs is of an arguably more violent and pissed off nature, which is precisely what I enjoy about it. Their new material absolutely kills and I can't wait to hear the final version of the mixes. Deitus were the first UK black metal band I ever saw live that actually meant it, so it's a pleasure to now be playing with those guys, which has certainly impacted my own playing and ethos in various ways, as well as my approach to being a frontman.

What do you feel is the hardest part of being a musician particularly in a Black metal band from England!?

Getting into Europe. The logistical hurdles of being an island making those initial steps onto the mainland simply more expensive and complex than EU bands face, so convincing a promoter over there that it's worth the hassle rather than booking a band one open border away does put you at a disadvantage of sorts. Nonetheless, we will get a foot in the door one way or another, and proceed to kick everyone's teeth in at the first opportunity. If any European promoters end up reading this, give us a call, it's time.

20. Frayle - Heretics and Lullabies Cleveland's doom duo alchemizes "lullabydoom" into prog-tinged beauty and brutality on their third record. Gwyn Strang's ethereal wails intoxicate over chuggy riffs in "Walking Wounded," while "Summertime Sadness" hypnotizes and entrails. "Souvenirs Of Your Betrayal" balances power and poise, and "Heretic" channels Lacuna Coil. Guests like Jason Popson add grit. A ritual of dark eloquence; loud, drudgy, sinister, and transcendent.

19. Full of Hell - Broken Sword Rotten Shield The Grindcore veterans latest record may only be fifteen minutes long but it manages to knock your teeth out quick enough to give you whiplash. The band utilise suffocating heaviness with bleak melody. “Knight’s Oath” swaggers darkly and my personal favourite “Lament of All Things” climaxes emotionally. The record is Experimental, loose and diverse.

18. Abigail Williams - A Void Within Existence Sorceron's magnum opus. This record is a cinematic black metal masterpiece of loss and redemption. The album is crushingly heavy and passionate whilst managing hit emotionally hard too. There are some incredible guitar solo's weaved into the songs which add yet another layer of experience.

A far cry from the band I first heard way back in 2008. Awesome record!

17. Malevolence - Where Only the Truth Is Spoken

16. 1914 - Viribus Unitis

Sheffield shredders' fourth album crushes constantly with a barrage of riffs from start to finish. Alex Taylor's subterranean snarls make him pne of the genres best vocalists. The track “Trenches" comes on like a storm of brutally employing sludgy grooves which shine through the chaos uncompromisingly. The Immense production elevates The thing. No fatigue, just growth.

If Sabbaton were influenced by Slayer instead of Iron Maiden and they developed a nasty bout of dysentery you'd get something like the 1914 new record.

The Ukrainian blackened death metal is pretty much what you would expect but delivered with more enthusiasm and passion than any of their peers. Truly epic stuff

15. Enthroned - Ashspawn The Belgian occult beasts' twelfth record is even better than the bands brilliant last record (2019) Cold Black Suns. The group have maintained the consistently high level of musicianship they are known for whilst adding to their legacy admirably. The ferocious drum blasts, oppressive tempos and progressive passages transcend the dark arts.

14. Harifa - As the Pale Sun Fades Its been a hell of a year for the DSBM solo project from the UK. This record being their second full length (third if you include EP's!)

The album is a masterclass in autumnal rawness. Focusing on the intensity of depression.

"Forever Autumn" drifts hauntingly whilst the title track fades ethereally. An immersive, brooding seasonal black metal record.

13. Blut Aus Nord - Ethereal Horizons A late addition to the 'best of 2025' list. This record is the bands 16th and is the culmination of 30 years behind the black metal wheel.

One of the most transformative and atmospheric records the band have ever put their name too and one that if id heard earlier would no doubt be higher in this list.

12. The Great Old Ones - Kadath Forgive my 'beating around the bush' on this one. 'Kadath' is a fucking incredible record and everyone should buy it. The French black metallers adapt Lovecraft's cosmic horror stories into a spectral soundscape of eldritch journeys.

"Me, The Dreamer" chugs along blackly and "Leng" pummels dynamically. This record is stuffed with melodic leads, rhythmic variety and captivating, organic progressions evoking horrors beyond comprehension.

11. Deadguy - Near Death Travel Services NJ hardcore legends' 30-year follow-up to their debt rips with discordant guitars, chaotic rhythms and Tim Singer's caustic shouts. "Kill Fee" is probably the best track the band have written. The album honours "Fixation on a Co-worker" as if the last three decades never happened.

Unapologetically Deadguy, a fucking barnburner.

10. The World is a Beautiful Place and I am No Longer Afraid to Die Dreams of Being Dust TWIABP's prog-core pivot intensifies on this, their fifth record. The band have always been just a fingertip away from greatness. With this album I believe they have finally achieved that elusive milestone.

The crunchy bass and haunting synths hardens emo roots without losing any dynamism. Heavier, louder confrontational in a way that will surely lead the band to even greater heights

9. Blackbraid - Blackbraid III This record is a perfect example of modern black metal done correctly.

Part three of the (so far) three record series III blends the secondwave Norwegian black metal, melodeath, and Native folk into a cosmic triumph.

Shifts from brutal to calm cycle tension mirroring natural ebbs and flows of the river. Technical yet majestic this album flows with ethereal atmosphere. It's Blackbraid's finest work yet, expanding their formula without dilution. One of 2025's extreme pinnacles.

8. Castle Rat - The Bestiary Brooklyn's medieval doom squad unleashes fantasy-fueled fury on their sophomore album, The Bestiary. The band channel Black Sabbath and Sleep with a NWOBHM feeling.

The Rat Queen's commanding hooks and sorceress snarls dominate "Wizard" and "Wolf I," with a bluesy swagger and earworm riffs that are igniting imaginations everywhere. Immense production amplifies everything into a crescendo.

This record is ridiculous, over-thetop, and irresistibly authentic.

7. Froglord - Metamorphosis Bristol's amphibian overlords' fifth saga continues the Toad worship via the medium of sludge/doom heavy metal.

"Collision" crushes Down-style whilst Follow The Star" worships Sabbath. Elsewhere the album features the best cover of an Aerosmith song ever put on wax "Sweet Emotion" sounds tailor made for the swamps and forests of doom metal.

Groovy, theatrical, entertaining this bands cult appeal has elevated even more this year. All hail the Froglord!

6. Lamp of Murmuur - The Dreaming Prince in Ecstasy Lamp of Murmuur's fourth LP weaves symphonic black metal grandeur with Immortal-esque thrash, gothic rock flourishes, and a narrative of unchained ecstasy. Opener "The Fires of Seduction" ignites with Nightmareon-Elm Street vibes, while the triptych title track gallops from Cradle of Filth riffs to progressive sleekness and soaring atmospheres. Guest vocals from Crying Orc add depth, blending lethal shrieks with cleaner passages.

Very much appreciated as a record of two halves the later being slightly more aligned towards the melodic.

This is a bold, reference-heavy triumph that's Lamp's strongest, most unique outing.

5. Sanguisugabogg – Hideous Aftermath Ohio’s gore-grind evolution ditches cartoon chaos for murderous maturity, honing caveman chugs into expansive brutality. “Erotic Beheading” and “Abhorrent Contraception” are the regular slam affair but “Sanctified Defilement” nods Vile Rites progressiveness, “Repulsive Demise” channels Godflesh‘s industrial Chug in a way i never knew I needed!

This record is Dense, multi-layered, and perversely listenable, it’s their magnum opus! It is coherent, personal, and sonically superior to Homicidal Ecstasy. A limbering death metal monster.

4. Signs of the Swarm – To Rid Myself of Truth Pittsburgh’s deathcore veterans refine their sound and brutality, evolving beyond what came before.

David Simonich’s husky roars anchor the bands trademark downtuned chugs.

The record shines with nuance and a primal rawness with unorthodox twists. Compressed production amplifies devastation, balancing visceral grooves and emotive depth.

A well-rounded, vicious foray Signs’ most unique, acknowledging their slam-djent roots without compromise.

3. Crippling Alcoholism - Camgirl Boston's "murderpop" sextet delivers a tragic electronica-punk odyssey through online performer's Bella Pink's sordid world, blending Joy Division post-punk with New Order darkwave.

Denser than previous album ".....Padded Room" the arrangements are lush and flamboyant with the synths brought to the foreground.

"Cam Girl" is full of addictive melodies crawling under your skin like a bad trip. The record is a cabaret of gloom and pain that's harrowing, infectious, and unapologetically addictive.

2. Whitechapel - Hymns in Dissonance This album marks a triumphant and ferocious return to the band's brutal roots, channelling the raw, unrelenting energy of their seminal debut “The Somatic Defilement” while armed with the sharpened songwriting prowess honed over nearly two decades. This record is more focused and heavier than anything they've unleashed in years.

Phil Bozeman's vocals are a standout force here, leaning heavily into his signature midrange growls and guttural "fries" that snarl with demonic intensity, eschewing the cleaner melodies of recent outings for pure aggression.

The epic closer "Nothing Is Coming for Any of Us" stands as a contender for one of Whitechapel's all-time finest moments, blending crushing heaviness with haunting, tragic guitar solos that linger long after the final note fades.

The instrumentation is equally punishing: bassist Gabe Crisp delivers thunderous low-end rumble that anchors the chaos, while newcomer-turned-permanent drummer Brandon Zackey's relentless blast beats and precise fills inject explosive heft into every riff. The triple-guitar attack remains airtight, weaving intricate leads amid the downtuned onslaught.

At its core, Hymns in Dissonance is fun, flippant, and furiously pissed-off. It is an album that revels in its brutality without compromise. Older, wiser, and more technically refined than their youthful fury, Whitechapel prove they're still kings of the genre, delivering a shockingly menacing slab that's both a loving nod to their past and a bold statement for the present.

Essential for any deathcore fan.

1. Deafheaven - Lonely People with Power This record represents a masterful synthesis of the band's evolving sound, deftly hybridizing the blistering metallic fury of 2015's New Bermuda with the ethereal, dreamlike shoegaze explorations of 2021's Infinite Granite. This is blackgaze at its most refined and explosive. Vocalist George Clarke's tortured, piercing screams and the relentless blast beats from Daniel Tracy surge the music forward like massive jets thundering down the runway, building to cathartic crescendos that leave you breathless.

Opening strong with the ferocious lead single "Magnolia," the album wastes no time asserting its aggression with a mean, riff-driven assault laced with melodeath chugs and blackened shrieks that rank among Deafheaven's heaviest moments in a decade. Beneath the onslaught lies a newfound accessibility with pop-oriented song structures that feel concise and hook-laden which consolidates the band's strengths while integrating brighter, more melodic elements from their recent shoegaze detour.

The result is confrontational yet deeply emotional, tackling themes of loss, isolation, power dynamics, and human frailty with unflinching intensity.

Far from a mere retreat or repudiation of past experiments, “Lonely People with Power” feels like a bold course correction that charts genuinely unexplored terrain: heavier and more rifffocused than recent outings, yet soaring with the atmospheric grandeur that defined classics like the classic “Sunbather”.

Widely hailed as their finest work yet, this is essential listening that rivals the untouchable heights of their landmark albums, proving the band remains at the absolute pinnacle of their powers.
