Mitsubishi Electric launches Medium Voltage Switchgear Energy generating installations – such as power plants, wind farms or flood water pumping stations – are continually looking for reliability, long life and easy changeability when taking investment decisions about operating medium voltage switchgear. MS-EBG MV switchgear, powered by Mitsubishi Electric components, more than meets all of these requirements. The principle purpose of switchgear is to control power but it is also used on critically important secondary functions such as protecting against voltage surges, short circuits, earth leakage, motor overloads as well as other faults like locked rotors and phase imbalance. Furthermore, switchgear has to be as compatible as possible with other electrical equipment in both its installation and also its interchangeablity, so that holding spares can be optimised and swapouts can be completed quickly and efficiently. To this end, MS-EBG MV switchgear is ideal for installation across many industries, from refineries, chemical

plants, mines, pulp and paper mills, automotive plants, water and wastewater plants, to distribution substations and conventional and renewable power generating plants. It is available with a 3.3kV to 24kV operating range, 630A to 4000A busbar ratings, short-circuit ratings of 25kA to 50kA, IP 4x and optional IP54 ingress protection, with AFLR internal arc classification and arc fault currents of up to 50kA. This makes it one of the safest and most robust switchgear types of its kind. This MV switchgear design, based on Mitsubishi Electric’s many decades of medium voltage switchgear manufacturing and operating experience, is also type

tested and complies with IEC62271200 as certified by independent testing bodies. Moreover, to ensure safety during installation and servicing, the enclosures include all the prescribed interlocks, partitions and automatic shutters to protect personnel from live parts as well as provide arc flash containment and suppression within live parts such as contactors and circuit breakers. Mitsubishi Electric MV switchgear includes enclosures, cabinets and busbars to ensure a long, trouble-free and safe working life.

Recent developments have realised an increase in the power density of TMEIC’s high-end IEGT based TM70e2 drive products, attaining 4.5MVA per meter of cabinet space, while maintaining the class-leading mean time between failure statistics for which we are renowned and which have gone unchallenged by its competition over the years. Innovative Medium Voltage Inverter range from Mitsubishi Electric The recently launched range of TMdriveMVe2 Medium Voltage variable speed drives are able to vary the speed of large electric motors. As a result, controlling associated equipment is facilitated and large amounts of energy wastage can be avoided. This feature has been developed in cooperation with TMEIC. MVe2 inverters are compact and modular, rather than inside a traditional rigid cabinet, allowing for flexible installation in confined areas, particularly as the modules can be located some distance apart and interconnected by cables. The innovative MVe2 technology is based on producing direct motor feed so there is no need for external bulky transformers, helping make installation straightforward and efficient. Since MVe2 inverters can be delivered with a range of input voltages from 3.3kV to 11kV they can be matched perfectly to existing site distribution voltage levels. Similarly, output voltage can be matched to the existing motors’ voltage, preserving previous investment by allowing them to be fed by the same medium voltage system, even if the voltages do not match. The MVe2 uses advanced power electronics technology to guarantee fast response, stable operation and rapid acceleration and deceleration whilst also providing industry-leading energy efficiency. Long-life, maintenance-free film capacitors (rather than conventional electrolytic capacitors) are used so that servicing is reduced to about once every seven years, rather than the more customary three years.

Large amounts of energy can be saved by using MVe2s because the energy saving potential from running a motor at reduced speeds is proportional to the cube of the speed reduction ratio. This factor is further enhanced by the regenerative braking capability built into the inverters as standard, which capture energy that would otherwise be wasted through mechanical braking. Thinking beyond the operational capabilities of the inverter the joint design team also ensured that TMdrive-MVe2 comfortably fits into a standard shipping container. This ensures safe and economical transportation to site, compared to taller inverters that require special arrangements to be made by freight companies such as being individually sealed against the weather to allow for the extra height during the journey. These medium voltage inverters complete the full range of modern inverters offered by Mitsubishi Electric through its subsidiary, TMEIC (Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corporation), so that customers can source all their inverters, from low to high end, from one supplier. Newman affirms: “In large the success of the Company is due to the cooperation between us as application experts in the field, and the manufacturing units which work collaboratively with the sole purpose of developing the best technical solutions to each and every industrial application.” A high skill set is incredibly important to TMEIC when it comes to continuously establishing itself as the best in the market; as a relatively small company, the need for personnel who have the technical capability to understand the complexities of the applications and products that are on offer, while maintaining an agile approach to the market is pivotally important. “In the past year we have been able to open a new state-of-the-art motor manufacturing facility in India, which is presently manufacturing our new Japanese developed TM21Global series of induction motors,” Newman describes. “This investment was

made with the primary objective of driving down the cost of manufacture, while maintaining the quality and performance level we are so well respected for. “Further to our current manufacturing facilities in India, we are also driving our facilities located in the US and China; these locations are not only developing and manufacturing our products for local use, but also exporting the products globally to the exacting standards our clients have become accustomed to.”
