Approximately 70 percent of its rugged land is carpeted in pristine forests and vegetation, and it is the world’s first carbon-negative nation – a feat it is ardently dedicated to maintaining and using as a shining beacon of hope for others.

Journeying through Bhutan takes you past goldenroofed temples, majestic fortress-like monasteries, timeless rural villages, and prayer flags fluttering across every hillside.

Situated in the heart of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, towards the south reside the legendary Bengal tiger, clouded leopard, and one-horned rhino; north lies the Himalayan wolf, snow leopard, and takin; and roaming the temperate pine forests are the red panda, Himalayan black bear, and grey langur.

Within the towns, visitors have a chance to witness age-old crafts and the country’s unique talent with the bow and arrow, alongside homemade traditional food, including ema datshi, rice and red chillies topped with cheese sauce; momos, fried or steamed dumplings dipped in chilli sauce; suja, salted butter tea; shakam paa, dried beef cooked with chillies and radish; and so much more – usually chilli-based.

Damcho Rinzin, Director (DR): The Department of Tourism Bhutan was established in 1971, and the country officially opened to tourism in 1974. From its inception, Bhutan adopted a cautious approach, emphasising regenerative tourism at the core of development guided by the philosophy of ‘high value, low volume’.

DR: Our current organisational goals focus on elevating Bhutan’s profile as a leading regenerative travel destination, offering distinctive and high-value visitor experiences, and strengthening professionalism and the quality of public service delivery. Ensuring tourism generates high value for the service providers and the nation is also important.

OT: How do you market Bhutan as a destination?

DR: The Department of Tourism Bhutan has been actively engaged in, and continues to carry out, various initiatives to promote and market the country as follows: • Digital marketing campaigns – The department runs targeted digital marketing campaigns to raise awareness about Bhutan as a tourist destination in key source markets, leveraging various online channels to reach a wide audience.

• Advertising campaigns – Advertising initiatives are undertaken to promote Bhutan in key source markets.

These campaigns utilise different mediums such as print, online, social media, and radio advertisements to create visibility and generate interest.

• Events and roadshows in key markets – The department organises events and roadshows in key markets to engage with travel industry professionals, tour operators, and potential visitors. These activities provide opportunities for networking, showcasing Bhutan’s offerings, and building partnerships.

• Promotion of festivals, events, and other activities – The department actively promotes the diverse festivals, events, and activities taking place in Bhutan. This helps create a vibrant image of the country and attracts travellers who are interested in experiencing its cultural celebrations and unique experiences.

• Press releases and public relations – The department regularly issues press releases to share updates and news about Bhutan’s tourism industry. Additionally, we engage in public relations efforts to build relationships with global press and media outlets, facilitating coverage and positive exposure.

• Sales representatives – The department employs sales representatives in key source markets who work to promote Bhutan as a destination and collaborate with travel agents and tour operators in various markets.

The department actively promotes Bhutan by highlighting the experiences each season offers, ensuring that visitors can enjoy the country’s rich culture and natural beauty year-round. We also emphasise that every season

presents distinct attractions, making Bhutan an ideal destination throughout the year.

OT: Are there any interesting projects in the pipeline you wish to highlight?

DR: We are particularly excited about the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a visionary initiative inspired by His Majesty the King. GMC is an urban development project in Bhutan that aims to blend economic growth with mindfulness, sustainability, and cultural preservation.

Spanning 2,500 square kilometres, it is envisioned as a transformative economic hub that connects Bhutan with Southeast Asian markets, offering a unique model of development rooted in Bhutanese values.

In addition, Bhutan’s tourism sector is embracing transformative trends, including digital innovation and sustainable, diversified travel experiences. A notable initiative is the recent launch of a national-level cryptocurrency payment system in partnership with Binance Pay and Digital Kidu Bank.

Introduced in May 2025, this system allows visitors to use cryptocurrencies for a wide range of services, from booking flights and visas to making purchases at local shops.

More than 100 Bhutanese merchants have joined the platform, enabling even small businesses in remote areas to participate in and benefit from tourism. This initiative enhances convenience for travellers and supports Bhutan’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and technological progress.

Haa Valley is recognised as one of the 25 best places to travel in 2025 by BBC Travel.

PARO TAKTSANG Paro Taktsang, or the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, is a distinguished Bhutanese monastery famed for drawing international visitors. Perched on a cliff, it overlooks the beautiful Paro Valley. Built in the 16th century, this is not only an important spiritual place but also a must-visit place for every visitor.

FLAU NTING AN AIR of eccentricity, Bhutan’s lively capital city of Thimphu expertly merges a unique brew of modern commercialism and timehonoured tradition, with an array of shops, internet cafés, karaoke clubs, and hip coffee shops lined up right next to old fortresses, forests, and monasteries where groups of crimson-robed monks trail in and out.

Thimphu only became the capital of Bhutan in 1961; however, 60 years proved more than enough for the eclectic city to thrive as a cultural heart of the country, able to preserve its heritage whilst growing upwards and outwards.

events that take place throughout the year, the city is a stronghold of Bhutanese art, architecture, and culture.

Even though it is considered the country’s most modern city, Thimphu has undoubtedly maintained the unique appeal of its past, framed by teeming and lush green forests, pearltipped mountain peaks, and statues of Buddhist deities dotted throughout.

For a taste of local life, head to the city’s weekend market located

next to the Wang Chhu River, which sees tradespeople and farmers from across the country working stalls with homegrown goods. Here, city dwellers, villagers, and travellers alike can rub shoulders and meander through stands of homemade cheeses, freshly steamed momos, handcrafted Himalayan beads, colourful masks, Buddhist paintings known as thangkas, handwoven textiles, and so much more.

Thimphu truly embodies the essence of the country’s vast tradition and charm whilst blending its heritage with more recent modern influences.

This captivating reflection of Bhutan’s ability and dedication towards maintaining its culture in the midst of implementing modernity is as unique as it is unmissable. Thimphu is a breathtaking symbol of tradition, spirituality, and progress.

LANDMARK ATTRACTIONS

Landmark Attractions Paro Taktsang Perched on the side of a cliff 10,000 feet above sea level sits the remarkable Paro Taktsang, also known as the Tiger’s Nest Monastery – a cliff-hugging, white-walled edifice that seems as if it has emerged straight from a fantasy novel. According to legend, eighth-century Buddhist master Guru Rinpoche was carried up the mountain on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave for three years, three months, and three days, thus bringing Buddhism to Bhutan. This awe-inspiring monastery requires a steep climb, but the views and tranquil environment are a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many.

Punakha Dzong Meaning ‘palace of great happiness or bliss’, Punakha Dzong is celebrated as one of Bhutan’s oldest, largest, and most astounding fortified monasteries, holding a sacred place in the hearts of the Bhutanese people. Arguably one of the most majestic structures in the country, Punakha Dzong was constructed in 1637 and is where all of Bhutan’s kings have been crowned over the centuries. With towering, whitewashed walls surrounded by vibrantly lush scenery, this palace is not one to miss.

Buddha Dordenma Statue Embodying spiritual grace and radiating tranquillity and grandeur, the Buddha Dordenma Statue in Thimphu is a revered symbol of peace and harmony. Standing 54 metres (m) tall, this towering statue is made of bronze and coated in shimmering gold, reflecting a blend of traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship and modern engineering. Holding deep cultural and spiritual significance, the statue attracts thousands of visitors and is uniquely comprised of 125,000 smaller Buddha statues, said to be placed inside to fulfil an ancient prophecy.

T RAVELLING TO B HUTA N most commonly involves flying into the country, although there are four authorised entry points stemming from India that allow drivers in.

Because of the particularly unique topography of Bhutan and its main airport, Paro International Airport (PBH), which is surrounded by Himalayan peaks that reach as high as 5,500m, only a select few airline pilots have the proper certification to fly into the country.

There are direct flights available from Nepal, Singapore, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates. If you are travelling from elsewhere in the world, expect layovers and long travel times ahead of arriving in the country, compensated by breathtaking views of the sweeping scenery below as you jet across the verdant mountainous landscape.

Ahead of booking your trip to Bhutan, be conscious that travellers will first have to apply for visas. Additionally, there is a Sustainable Development Fee to account for.

This fee, which is currently USD$100 per person per night with a discounted price for children between the ages of six and 12 and no fee for kids under six, directly contributes to maintaining and advancing the country’s sustainable tourism.

Once in Bhutan, the best way to get around is via road.

Getting There and Around

As it is not possible to acquire a self-drive vehicle in the country, visitors must hire a vehicle and driver. Hiring a Bhutanese travel guide is mandatory and helps you confidently navigate the customs, communicate with locals, and ultimately get the most out of your experience.

They will also help you plan your exact itinerary to ensure your travels are personalised to the type of trip you desire, whether that be culture-heavy, gastronomy-focused, nature-based, or a little bit of all the above.

There is no best time of the year to visit Bhutan, as even during the traditional rainy season between June, July, and August only experience light drizzles that end as quickly as they begin. December and February are uniquely beautiful, as many areas of the country see snowfall, and the alpine territory becomes a sparkling winter fantasy.
