Feeling Lucky By Eric Noel Roman
T
he wind is so calming, cooling, and refreshing. I feel it flowing through my four leaves and brushing against my skinny stem. I could not ask for more; I have a wonderful life. Now, I might be small in stature, but I also am pretty darn resilient. I get stepped on, overlooked, and I tend to get my food on my own. I am glad most of my nutrients come from the sun. I am one happy clover. I have everything I could ever ask for. First, the rain is abundant and I can drink all I like. My neighbors in this garden like to share their resources. For the most part, I am able to soak up the sun everyday. When it is cloudy I still enjoy some rays, if not it is raining. To be honest rain is awesome. It washes away the soil of impurities and keeps my stems full and sturdy. I sprouted in the perfect place. I am one lucky lifeform. In my lifetime, I have had many neighbors like me sprout and become friends of mine. Sometimes, these enormous beings come around and pluck my friends. These same giants are the ones that step on me and seem to ignore me. These giants uproot us and stick us in a dark place, away from the sun and air. I
hear them always say to each other how lucky they are to have found us, that we bring them good fortune. I question this ability. How can I bring luck to anyone or anything? I am just a four-leaf clover. I am a small green plant. I prefer to say that individuals create their own good fortune by surrounding themselves with people and situations that create fulfilling emotion. Luck is a feeling when goals are accomplished. Sometimes the work is easy and feels lucky, other times that same luck requires hard work and the person ends up saying, “I’m lucky to have accomplished this.” As a person grows, that individual learns skills and lessons that allow them to guide to a path of success or failure. In failure, there is a lesson and a new skill is tested and reworked, until perfected. As the skills improve so does the ability to use the skill for gainful growth. With these gains come the feeling of accomplishment and reward. These are the rewards we deem as lucky. If a person is willing to put in the work, then the rewards will be seen. There is no luck involved. Only drive.
