AHF Donation Keeps the Lights On at Kyiv AIDS Center AHF Ukraine recently delivered 30 portable LED lights and as many power banks to the Kyiv AIDS Center as part of humanitarian relief for the health care staff. Staff of the Kyiv City Hospital No. 5, which houses the city’s AIDS Center have continued to treat patients 24/7 despite ongoing threats to their safety and mandatory blackouts. “Our clinic always strives to provide quality HIV care

and support to HIV-positive people. We have faced many difficulties, including losing power,” said Elmira Mamedova, Deputy Director of Medical Affairs at Kyiv City Hospital No. 5. “This could force us to interrupt patient services, but thanks to assistance from AHF Ukraine, we can provide services even in the temporary absence of electricity. We express our sincere gratitude to AHF for promptly responding and providing our clinic with these much-needed items.”

Mid-Year’s Resolutions By Steven O. Evans, PhD It’s hard to believe that it’s July and already the second half of 2022. You know what that means? Christmas is just around the corner. I do hope each of you had a successful and happy PRIDE month. Let’s let this sense of community and togetherness continue throughout the entire year. This may also be a good time for some mid-year selfcheck ups. Finances. As we are now able to go back out to public places, set a budget monthly for food, alcohol, ride services, and other entertainment expenses. I love living in South Florida, but I always advise myself on what I spend in this area. Social time. For me as a natural introvert, I can easily make myself happy at home. But I am being intentional about going out. I’m also looking at new things to try and new places to go. Some friendships are not as tight as before (which is part of life), so I’m looking and working to make new friends. Travel. There are so many amazing travel opportunities. It’s time to take advantage of them. I’m skipping some of “the usual” and exploring new places in the coming years. Physical Health. Always a resolution, but do we ever do it? Healthier eating and exercise always need to be part of our priorities. Mental Health. The big pandemic was a game changer in teaching us to take care of our mental health. Wherever you are in your life journey, take care of yourself and your own happiness first. Wishing you the best of the best. May happiness be abounding1. Steven O. Journey to Italy Through South Florida’s Own iL Paesano By Steven O. Evans, PhD

Y

ou won’t need your passport, but you will need your full appetite when you spend an evening at iL Paesano, South Florida’s own Italian Gourmet Food Cafe, Deli and Wine Market. How does food go from merely eating, to an experience? Visit them, and you’ll find out. You immediately feel part of Italy when you enter. The smells, the sounds, and owners’ amazingly friendly voices, all bring you into a night to get away. Ready for romance with your special someone? Trying to impress that first time date with your charm? This

is the place. Paola and Vergilio make sure every detail is exact. And you and your guest(s) will feel special. Ah, but the wine? Yet another experience. Venture to their wine boutique with a selection of favorites and unique things to try. Also a great place for conversation starters with the date you’re working on for a second date. Hint: Head over on a night before to take notes on the wines and research them. You’ll then have some topics to discuss. If not, no worries. The staff will guide you on selections.

Now for the real truth. Ready? The food. It’s Italy brought to your table. All foods are made in house by hand or imported from Italy. There is no detail left unnoticed when it comes to bringing you (and your date) the most unique and amazing trip of flavor. Sauces, spices, pastas, breads . . . I can hear you calling them now to make reservations. Start with the Antipasto Misto. One by one, each is a bite of original cold cuts, cheeses, roasted peppers, olives, and stuffed artichoke hearts. Don’t miss the Grilled Octopus. It’s authentic with a taste and texture that will have you asking for more.

For dinner, the Cartoccio Linguini is a must. It consists of clams, mussels, shimp, calamari, and crab or lobster meat in a wine and tomato sauce. Please promise me you’ll not miss this treat. The Fiocchetti Tartufo is an amazing pasta filled with truffle cheese and a cream of porcini sauce. Pick any other selection - you won’t go wrong. Numerous desserts are on hand that are imported directly from Italy. Pair them with their fresh coffee to round out the perfect night for you and your date. Make your life the best it can be. And your world of dining - extraordinary.

ometimes the things we are running away from, we actually, find ourselves running to!

My friend Mr Eagle NYC 2020/2021, Michael Jeavons, inspired my leather self image at IML. His positive laid back attitude and his style rocked me. It actually shook my core in a positive way. I have always been drawn to his same style. I have purchased several biker style pieces, but would I dare compete in them? conforming to a predetermined look was for me? I ran from that in my early twenties. This isn’t anything compared to coming out, but it was still fitting a mold of sorts. Now inspired, I took a deeper look at myself, who and what I was trying to achieve or express. A realization of a look, I thought was expected from the leather community and in May from the judges. Randy Rainbow In his Own Words By Gregg Shapiro Cover and article photos credit: Dirty Sugar Photography

S

ome of the best and most memorable memoirs are the ones where it not only feels like the writer is speaking directly to you, but also that they are taking you into their confidence. As if you, the reader, have entered into an agreement with the writer and they are sharing personal details with you, and you can hear their voice clearly in your ear. In the cleverly titled Playing with Myself (St. Martin’s, 2022) by Randy Rainbow, Rainbow’s speaking (and occasionally singing) voice rings forth from the pages, complete with his humorous parenthetical commentary. The book title is fitting not just because Rainbow (who spent his formative years in South Florida) was an only child, but also because of his seamless one-man operation when it comes to his exceedingly popular (millions of hits on YouTube) parody videos which he writes and performs on his own. As for the personal and more serious material, Rainbow is unhesitant in being completely forthcoming. He shares intimate details about his difficult relationship with his father, the devastating loss of his grandmother whom he called Nanny, as well as the heartbreak of having to put down his cat Mushi during the pandemic. Rest assured, it’s not all sadness. Randy’s marvelous interactions with his mother, who is one of the most positive forces in his life, are a delight to read about. Additionally, if

you don’t already adore Carol Burnett and Patti LuPone (and really, who doesn’t?), after you read about Rainbow’s colorful experiences with both women, you will love them even more (if that’s even possible). Additionally, as an indication of Rainbow’s expansive generosity, the entirety of chapter 14, titled “It’s Not Easy Being Green Screen,” is basically a step-by-step guide to how he creates his videos. In other words, Playing with Myself is a how-to, as well as a memoir, making it THE must-read of the summer (and beyond). For many people, gay and straight, Randy Rainbow was also a ray of light and joy during the pandemic. Shining brightly through the seemingly impenetrable dark storm clouds, Rainbow burst forth with colorful parody songs and videos that provided endless sources of much-needed laughs. While the new administration may not get as many zingers, there are still plenty of targets for Randy’s barbs. His multitude of devoted fans and followers look forward to Rainbow’s brilliantly executed audio/visual treats, as catchy as they are thought-provoking. Shortly before his Fort Lauderdale concert date, Randy was gracious enough to answer a few questions. Gregg Shapiro: Randy, I’d like to begin by asking you to say a few words about the process of selecting a song for your

OutClique.com | 51

parody lyrics, and if there’s ever been a song that you really wanted to use but had to abandon because it wasn’t a good fit? Randy Rainbow: I’m a show queen! I naturally think in show tunes. I’ve just sort of been conditioned through the years, starting at home with my mom who’s always loved the genre, to naturally find the musical theatre parallel to any situation, be it in my personal life or on the world stage. That’s the easy part. A few times I have written songs and didn’t release them because the news had shifted to focus on something else. It’s rare, but it has happened.

GS: Are you bombarded by suggestions of songs to parody from friends and fans, and if so, have you ever used any of them? RR: Yes, and it’s led to a few repeats. I had already done a parody of the song “Tradition” from Fiddler on the Roof, but then when the word “sedition” came into the zeitgeist, thanks to you-know-who, everyone was clamoring for a reprise.

GS: What can you tell the readers about your new album? RR: There are some amazing collaborations on this one. I’m dueting with guest stars such as Bernadette Peters, Josh Gad, Sean Hayes, and Tituss Burgess. I’ve also written two new original songs with Marc Shaiman and Alan Menken. Can you believe it? It’s called “A Little Brains, A Little Talent,” and was released through Broadway Records. GS: How much of your upcoming tour will revolve around the songs on the new album? RR: I definitely want to include some of the new songs, but there will be plenty of my “greatest hits” in there, too.

GS: You are an incredibly prolific artist. Did being isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic cause you to be more productive or did your productivity remain the same? RR: Believe it or not, 2020 was a very busy year for me artistically. In addition to the videos, I began writing my memoir, recording the new album, launching a new podcast - it goes on. I am so grateful.

GS: Many folks baked sourdough bread during the shutdown. Are you one of them? RR: No! I did what everyone else in New York City does, order take-out [laughs]!

GS: You have an upcoming concert date in Fort Lauderdale. What does it mean to you when you perform for the hometown crowd in Broward County? RR: It’s incredibly special, as you can imagine. And, of course, my mom will be in the audience.

GS: What did it mean to you when Barbra Streisand Tweeted about your video? RR: Barbra has now tweeted me twice, I’ll have you know! I was even asked by her team to create a video celebrating the release of her new album. I mean. I can’t believe it! It’s BARBRA! She’s my only religion.

GS: Have you recently heard from any other celebrities, either those who have been the subject of your videos or just as fans? RR: I get lots of support from my fancy, famous friends every time I release a video and I love them for it. I also always get a note from another of my idols, Carol Burnett. She and my mom have become pen pals!

Is Your Skin Aging Too Fast? As we age, so does our skin. Our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat causing the facial muscles to work closer to the skin surface; this makes wrinkles and fine lines more apparent. The cells in the skin start to lose their ability to produce more collagen and elastin, adding to the loss of facial volume. Sun exposure, heredity, nutrition, and lifestyle add to aging. Lift. Dermal fillers, also known as soft tissue fillers or wrinkle fillers, are gel-like substances injected into the skin to restore lost volume, fill wrinkles, smooth lines, and define facial contours. Fillers are ideal for deep lines not caused by facial muscle contraction. They enhance the face making it look full, plump, and youthful. Dermal fillers can: • Plump thin lips • Restore volume to sunken cheeks, temples, and lips • Soften facial creases and wrinkles • Improve the appearance of recessed scars • Reconstruct contour deformities in the face • Decrease or remove eye circles

No Waiting! AHF Changes South Florida Care By John Hayden

F

or decades, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) has helped lead the fight to stop the spread of HIV and care for patients around the world. Now, the opening of their latest clinic may herald a new attitude towards patient care. AHF has opened up its newest facility, AHF Northpoint, at 6333 N. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Every aspect of the center is designed with patient care in mind. “The inconveniences of other health care clinics, like waiting rooms, are alleviated,” Dr. Zachary Henry, AHF Northpoint’s Medical Director, told OutClique. “This new clinic has a setup where patients are able

72 | OutClique.com

to check in at the front counter and are immediately brought back into an exam room.” For many, sitting and waiting in the waiting room can be the most tedious part of seeking care. AHF patients at Northpoint are taken into their exam room, where many routine services, like temperature and blood pressure checks are performed. “It’s a patient-centered model,” AHF President Michael Weinstein told OutClique. “We don’t have a waiting room. We have patients go immediately into an exam room. All the services are brought to them.” AHF isn’t new to the area, and they’ve been around

for 17 years. Weinstein says the goal wasn’t just to keep up with the times, but to pave the way for future care. “The old facility served us very, very well, but it had a bad layout,” he explains. “It was broken up into three different pieces. Also, it was way in the back. When people came on public transportation, they had to walk a long way in the heat of the summer to get there.” Many AHF patients don’t have private transportation, so ease of access is an important, yet often overlooked detail. AHF Northpoint will serve up to 3,600 patients a month, 70 percent of whom are HIV positive. Twenty percent are on PrEP, while the rest are in long term care. Given that South Florida continues to be a hotspot for new HIV infections, and that more than a half-million HIV plus Americans aren’t in care, the impact on the neighborhood is profound. “Northpoint is the largest domestic AHF clinic in the U.S.” Henry says. “This is going to be able to help us care for more people who live with HIV who otherwise might have difficulty obtaining their medicine and healthcare because they are either uninsured or underinsured and normally would not have access.” In addition to the patient benefits, the staff also feels the changes. “Anytime you go into something newer means more space, newer equipment, and a better arsenal of diagnostic tests,” Henry says. “It helps them feel like they’re doing something for the community and doing what they do best: providing care for patients who need us to be there for them when others may not be.”

PRESCRIPTION OPIOIDS Addiction and Overdose

Anyone who takes prescription opioids can become addicted to them. In fact, as many as one in four patients receiving long-term opioid therapy in a primary care setting struggles with opioid addiction.4,5,6 Once addicted, it can be hard to stop. In 2016, more than 11.5 million Americans reported misusing prescription opioids in the past year.1

Prescription opioid overdose deaths also often involve benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines are central nervous system depressants used to sedate, induce sleep, prevent seizures, and relieve anxiety. Examples include alprazolam (Xanax®), diazepam (Valium®), and lorazepam (Ativan®). Avoid taking benzodiazepines while taking prescription opioids whenever possible.

Taking too many prescription opioids can stop a person’s breathing—leading to death.

The Justin Flippen Memorial Scholarship at Our Fund Foundation Awards Scholarship to Deserving Florida Atlantic Student Our Fund Foundation, the third largest LGBTQ+ foundation in the nation, has announced that Luke Turner, a graduate student at Florida Atlantic University, will receive the second annual Justin Flippen Memorial Scholarship.

“From a young age, school saved my life and served as both an escape and a new beginning where I was able to educate and challenge myself,” said Turner. “As I became increasingly informed, I was able to improve my communication and critical life skills, and build upon my passion of becoming a responsible citizen who always stands up for what is right.” Ever since Turner can remember, he has been committed to public service. At the ages of 10 and 14, he volunteered to work on President Obama’s two campaigns and even had a chance to meet the former president on two occasions. Participating in mock-legislative conferences through 4-H solidified Turner’s dedication to public service leading him to intern for a U.S. Representative both locally and in Washington, D.C. and then on to serving as Governor of Florida Atlantic University – Boca Campus. All these experiences deepened his commitment and aspiration to become an attorney and serve the public. “Our Fund Foundation is honored to administer the Justin Flippen Memorial Fund which will help prepare future generations of leaders to follow in the footsteps of Justin’s thoughtful and passionate public service,” said David Jobin, President and CEO of Our Fund Foundation. “Justin distinguished himself as Florida Atlantic University’s first openly gay Student President and went on to become Wilton Manors’ Mayor. His life and career in public service were guided by Thomas Jefferson’s foundational principle, ’Governments are the servants, not the masters, of the people.’”

When Justin Flippen, the beloved late mayor of Wilton Manors, died unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm in 2020, Our Fund Foundation swiftly launched the Justin Flippen Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor his enduring legacy. Turner, who has a longstanding record of political activism and working for social justice, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from FAU in 2020 and will soon receive his master’s in political science. Ever since coming out, he has stood up for himself and has been an outspoken advocate for others as well.

Scholarships from the Justin Flippen Memorial Fund are awarded annually and in perpetuity, in increments of $1,000. Our Fund Foundation oversees the endowment which was created to provide financial support to Florida students who are aspiring to enter public service and pursuing a degree in political science or a related field. Preference will be given to students exhibiting interest in promoting LGBTQ+ equality. “It is an honor to receive this scholarship in Justin Flippen’s name. He was a bridge-builder and a unifying leader,” said Turner. “I consider myself to be a trailblazer, because complacency is not an option.” Our Fund Foundation intends on continuing to raise funds for the Justin Flippen Memorial Fund so the non-profit can increase and expand the number of future scholarships. For more information or to make a donation, visit our-fund. org/justin_memorial Established in 2011, Our Fund Foundation has grown into the third largest LGBT foundation in the nation. As South Florida’s only LGBT community foundation, Our Fund promotes a culture of philanthropy by uniting donors with organizations; advancing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties; and supporting causes within the LGBT community. Godart Chosen to Share its EyeCarry Brand Story with Millions EyeCarry has been selected for Qurate Retail Group’s Small Business Spotlight, an initiative to strengthen diverse small businesses through increased exposure and various other pro bono in-kind services. The program, which launched in 2020 and is now in its third year, builds on Qurate Retail Group’s longstanding foundation of supporting small businesses and reflects the company’s commitment to increasing opportunities for underrepresented groups. Qurate Retail Group, a vCommerce leader that includes QVC, HSN, Zulily and several other brands, is using its production resources, television broadcasts and digital platforms to help EyeCarry share its story with millions of consumers nationwide. EyeCarry’s story first began appearing on QVC’s and HSN’s websites and social pages in June 2022. “We’re honored to be featured by QVC, HSN, and Zulily among other brands in representation of Pride Month. Creating awareness in the LGBTQ+ community is something we practice every day and this is an opportunity to take it a step further,” said F. Thomas Godart, inventor and founder of EyeCarry. EyeCarry is an eyeglass case designed never to leave your side. The brand was founded as a solution to one man’s quest to stop losing his own glasses. While working for his boating company, founder F. Thomas

Godart could not find a convenient and safe way to store his eyeglasses – so he decided to create his own solution and EyeCarry was born. Its open face design has a specialty clip engineered to grasp tightly to nearly every belt or strap. With the EyeCarry case, people will no longer need to hang their glasses on their shirts, place them on their heads, or toss them into a bag without protection. The EyeCarry mission is to significantly reduce the amount of broken, scratched, and lost glasses nationwide.

About QurateRetail GroupSM Qurate Retail Group comprises seven leading retail brands – QVC®, HSN®, Zulily®, Ballard Designs®, Frontgate®, Garnet Hill® and Grandin Road® – all dedicated to providing a more human way to shop. Stonewall National Museum and Archives Announces New Executive Director Photo Courtesy of Robert Kesten

History=Pride Stonewall National Museum and Archives, a national nonprofit that promotes understanding through collecting, preserving and sharing the proud culture of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people kicks off its next 50 years with a new executive director and an enhanced mandate to elevate and keep relevant the LGBTQ+ experience and cultural heritage at a time when some want to ban books, limit discussions in our schools and workplaces, and replace the word Gay with silence. “I am glad to be part of an organization that seeks to take a leadership role in making knowledge and information relevant in our lives. We in the LGBTQ+ community understand all too well the struggle that comes from being marginalized. There is a Pride Month because we know where we came from, we know who we are, and we know where we are going” said Robert Kesten, who becomes executive director and CEO of the museum on June 1, 2022. Stonewall has the largest LGBTQ+ library and archive in the United States and continues to grow its collections, making materials available to other organizations and institutions across the United States and the world. Located in South Florida, the organization’s footprint has impacted academic and other nonprofits everywhere there are LGBTQ+ communities, their allies, friends, and families. “Robert is exactly the person to lead us into the next 50 years of our mission”, stated Jacki Bennett the organization’s board chair. “With all that is going on around us, especially in our home state of Florida, it is important that our archives and collections have a wider perspective, a greater reach, and play a more

intentional role in chronicling the continued work and narrative for LGBTQ+ equality. We believe Robert is the person to do that.” With an eclectic international career from film and music to work with presidents and prime ministers, Kesten worked on Ukraine’s independence from the USSR, the Ghanaian redrafting of its national Constitution, human rights during the Arab Spring, established an international film festival, a program for the New York City Public Schools, and has long been active in advancing LGBTQ+ human rights.

Dr. Ty Richardson, the Newest Board Member of Fort Lauderdale’s Housing Authority By John Hayden

W

ith rent jumping 30 percent or more and housing prices skyrocketing, South Florida is facing a housing crisis with seniors and children most vulnerable. The Housing Authority of Fort Lauderdale works to help alleviate the problem, and its board has a new member who brings a world of experience to the table. Dr. Ty Richardson was recently appointed by Mayor Dean Trantalis. “I met with Dean and he said housing could use some diversity and help,” Richardson tells OutClique. “I said absolutely. Let’s go for the Housing Authority.” Fort Lauderdale doesn’t have rent control, but Richardson says there are other ways to attack the problem of affordable housing.

where he got his undergrad in advertising and a masters in international commerce. Living in the D.C. area, Richardson developed a love of government work. He also lived in Dallas and started a consulting firm that introduced people with ideas to people with money. “I became a digital nomad,” he says. “I opened up my laptop and started a marketing agency and did networking events across the Caribbean for youth and young professionals. What that did for me is, it allowed me to build a company from nothing into a six figure company in a matter of two years.” Eventually, he found Fort Lauderdale.

“What is our current state of housing here?” he asks. “I personally feel like the prices of housing in Fort Lauderdale are through the roof. We can’t impact that, but we can make sure that the city has a space for people who can’t afford that.”

“My passion for this city is more than any other city I’ve lived in,” he says. “For me, Fort Lauderdale is amazing.”

The crisis is driven by demand. Richardson believes with more people working remote, they want to leave colder areas and live in South Florida. Many of those people are willing to pay premium prices to reach their goal, but Richardson’s goal is to make sure people don’t get left behind.

“It means leading,” he explains. “Leading a council, having your voice heard, making a difference, and I’ve been able to do that over the past years. Now, sitting on the board and running the Rising Leaders Council, I’ll be running the Membership Council next year.”

“All we can do is make sure everybody rises,” he says. “We have to make sure our local folks are rising, not just victims to a flood of people coming in. That’s a symptom of education. We have very low unemployment in Broward County. We have to make sure people are aware of job opportunities.” Richardson, a world traveler his entire adult life, grew up in Trinidad with a passion for travel and banking. He rose in both fields by the time he was 30. Just before turning 18, American Airlines hired him in security to find drugs and bombs on planes. “I was responsible for standing on the runway and making sure I didn’t miss anything,” he exclaims. “Talk about the fear of God in a kid!” He later lived in Dublin running American’s European call centers, which opened the world to him for travel. Eventually, he fulfilled his other passion, banking, by working in business development at American’s credit union. Along the way, he came to the U.S. and lived in Washington, D.C.

Richardson became part of the business community, joining the Tower Club and Chamber of Commerce.

Now, he wants to lead at a more grass roots level. “I decided this year I wanted to do more at the community level,” he says. “I’ve done the business community. I’ve worked, made a change, and done the impacting thing. How can I go bigger and to the next level? For me, that is the community.” On the Housing Authority, Dr. Richardson says we have to look beyond downtown. “It’s oversight. It’s the ability to make sure we do what we said we would do and that we’re doing the right things. We have enough suburbia around us for people to live and still be 10-30 minutes away from where they work.” Serving seniors and the poor is Richardson’s core mission. “A lot of those factors don’t allow us to say we need to institute policy regulations as a city or county to address it,” he says. “We’re still a little ways from that. The impact we can make at the Housing Authority is limited to poverty and seniors that need assistance. If we take care of those people we’ve done our job.”

When Icons Collide Laverne Cox Meets Barbie

By John Hayden

W

hen you see Laverne Cox’s brilliant, bright smile, you can’t help but smile back. When you see her new Barbie doll, you can’t help but beam with pride. The iconic doll franchise is once again making history with its first trans doll. The Laverne Cox edition coincides with her 50th birthday. Cox worked closely with Mattel’s creative team making sure every detail reflected her sense of pride and style. “I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie doll modeled after a transgender person to their collection,” Cox said when it was released. “I hope that people can look at this Barbie and dream big like I have in my career. The space of dreaming and manifesting is such a powerful source and leads you to achieve more than what you originally thought was possible.” Cox has been a role model in the trans community, and the LGBTQA+ community overall, for years. Her breakout role on Orange Is the New Black brought her to national attention. A fan petition to make her a part of the Barbie Collection was started in 2018. Once Mattel decided it was a great idea, they paired Cox with Carlye Nuera, their lead designer for the Barbie Signature Collection. In an interview with InTheHeartStories.com, he said, “Barbies allow people to feel seen and represented, whether it’s because of the doll’s skin tone, facial features, body type, hair texture/style, or just the fashion’s vibe.” From the doll’s skin tone to fashion, Nuera and Cox obsessed over every detail. In the end, it took 18 months for the designing duo to get everything just right. Mattel praises the collaboration as the creation is a perfect product at the perfect moment. “As a four-time Emmy-nominated actress, Emmy-winning producer, and the first transgender woman of color to have a leading role on a scripted TV show, Laverne Cox uses her voice to amplify the message of moving beyond societal expectations to live more authentically. She wears a triplethreat original design, featuring a deep red tulle gown gracefully draped over a dazzling, silver metallic bodysuit. Her hair is swept into glamorous Hollywood waves while dramatic makeup completes her look.” Laverne Cox’s Barbie is $40, and a portion of the proceeds goes to TransFamilySOS, a cause close to Cox’s heart. You can find the doll at Target, Walmart, and on Amazon.

L

egendary Brazilian artist Ney Matogrosso makes a rare U.S. visit when he performs in the Au-Rene Theater on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 8 p.m. A creative powerhouse from his time with the glam rock group Secos e Molhados in the 1970s through today, he is renowned for his flamboyance, stage theatrics, loud costumes, and his uncommon countertenor voice. Matogrosso was a pivotal presence in Brazil as gender roles were changing. According to Beyond Carnival: Male Homosexuality in Twentieth Century Brazil by the Brown University Center for Digital Scholarship, “Ney Matogrosso…was far less subtle in his subversion of traditional notions of gender and sexuality. Ney often sang entire songs in falsetto, used dramatic makeup and exotic costumes, and danced in a style that was as traditionally feminine as it was traditionally masculine. In 1978, Ney clarified his homosexuality in a magazine interview, and, in the face of widespread homophobia, he remained one of Brazil’s most famous celebrities.” One of the most unique and dazzling performers to have ever come out of Latin America, Matogrosso was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the top three greatest Brazilian artists of all time and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin GRAMMY Awards in 2014.

When interviewed for Sounds and Colors Magazine in 2014 Matogrosso said, “I think deep down people admire the ones that have the courage to speak the truth. I never hid, what you see is what you get. On the other hand: in the first interviews I gave, they used to ask me about sex and I used to talk clearly about sex. Then I would read the article and it was written: ‘About love…’ I used to think: ‘But I didn’t speak about love, I spoke about sex!’ They didn’t have the courage because of the censorship back then.” Over a nearly five-decade career, Matogrosso has challenged preconceptions and prejudices through his satiric and ironic performances while also evolving into a very serious and well-respected artist through his interpretations of classic standards. He continues to tour and perform throughout Brazil and Europe.” His memoir, Vira-Lata de Raca, was published in 2018. Tickets are $48-$85. Ticketmaster is the only official ticketing service of the Broward Center and Parker Playhouse. Lead the Bull By Eric Noel Roman TEST YOUR POWERS OF OBSERVATION

Grab that bull and direct its horns where it needs to go. “I am here for fun, I will not take the lead role in this race,” I said at the very beginning to my friends. The race began and it was teams of twenty, with five hours of teamwork activities to get through a section of wooded trails. The teams were compiled of various shapes, sizes, and ages. At first, everyone was on the same page. The mosquitos were beginning to swarm. The sun had no hiding spots, it was clear skies in late spring early summer. South Florida was already becoming its “oven” state. The race continued and about two hours into the course the structure fell apart. People were at different levels of tired, tempers were shortening, and fellowship was diminishing. People were beginning to bicker and ignore each other.

Sherlock Holmes: The Exhibition was developed by Exhibits Development Group and Geoffrey M. Curley + Associates in collaboration with the Conan Doyle Estate Limited, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

“Alright guys, I’m done. This is how we are going to finish this race. You four are working together. I’m joining this other small group. The rest can figure it out. The task is a fireman’s carry for the next two miles. Now, as smaller groups, we work out the issues and I will push forward.” I looked at one of the members of my group, mounted her on my shoulders, and moved on. I led the team to the finish with her on my shoulders. I showed the team that we must work together. At the finish line we had to complete a series of exercises and obstacles. I coached them along by showing them I had no worries putting myself at the front of the unknown so they would see comfort in accomplishment. “So, what was that about you not taking the lead?” My friend whispered to me.

He continued, “You are a natural leader. It’s ok to take charge and lead people to safety. It shows that you have character, Eric.”
