The Speed of Life Dear Readers, Happy February! It’s hard to believe that it’s already the start of another month in 2023. How fast is life moving for you? What pace are your days, nights, and months? Even years? Where are you in the journey of life? It’s all about perspective. You may have your entire life ahead of you. Endless possibilities. Opportunities you don’t even know exist. So many people that are waiting to meet you. Maybe you’re midlife and making new decisions. What’s next? What do you want to change? Who do you want to be? What changes (if any?) do you want to make in the world? If you’re later in life, you still have so much to experience. The knowledge you have from life can be used to create a new reality everyday, while passing it on to others. You’re at the Grand Central Train Station of life. Get on board. You never know what passengers you’ll meet. What destinations await. Or who you will become. May happiness be abounding.1 Dr. Steven2 1 Dr. Angela Easterday-Holder, former Chair and Professor of Music at Carson-Newman University and choir member Immanuel Baptist Church, Lexington, KY (www.ibclex.org) 2 Dr. Jane McEldowney Jensen, doctoral supervisor. LGBT+ Cruise Passengers Boost Business for Greater Fort Lauderdale’s Travel Industry

Greater Fort Lauderdale is preparing to set a new record in February 2023, with four, back-to-back, sold-out LGBT+ cruises welcoming more than 11,500 visitors to the destination. The economic impact of the four cruises from hotel room nights alone is estimated to be at least $8 million according to Visit Lauderdale, the official destination marketing

organization for Greater Fort Lauderdale. Visitors will arrive here from around the world, with most booking local hotel reservations on both ends of their cruise itinerary for enjoying local restaurants, attractions, and shopping while they are here. “With demand for travel to LGBT+ friendly destinations at an all-time high, our reputation for welcoming ‘everyone under the sun’ has delivered a record-breaking booking of four consecutive LGBT+ cruises of this magnitude,” says Richard Gray, Visit Lauderdale’s senior vice president of inclusion & accessibility. Greater Fort Lauderdale is Florida’s LGBT+ capital and one of the most progressive destinations in the United States.

TravelPulse recently named Greater Fort Lauderdale one of the top 4 places for LGBT+ travelers post-COVID. In October 2022, Visit Lauderdale unveiled its vibrant, new brand campaign “Everyone Under the Sun,” highlighting Greater Fort Lauderdale’s authentic welcoming vibe and its inclusive community. The destination’s commitment to inclusion is evident in the ads, starring locals of all ethnicities, disabilities, and members of the area’s LGBT+ community. Gray worked with LGBT+ cruise operators Atlantis, VACAYA, and Olivia for the past year and promoted the four sailings on visitlauderdale.com/lgbtq/cruises. In addition, he arranged discounted hotel packages with

area hoteliers, such as the Courtyard Fort Lauderdale Downtown and helped facilitate special marketing initiatives with VACAYA and Olivia.

specialized travel packages for lesbians. The cruises (February 19-26, 2023, and February 23-March 5, 2023) will carry a total of 3,800 passengers.

Atlantis’ voyage on Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas (February 4-12, 2023) is the largest gay cruise ever, with 5,400 passengers. VACAYA’s cruise package on Celebrity Reflections (February 12-19, 2023) will host 2,300 travelers and Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam will host two cruises for LGBT+ tour operator, Olivia, which is celebrating 50 years of

Luxury cruises are big business for Greater Fort Lauderdale, with Port Everglades ranked third among the busiest cruise homeports worldwide. “Beyond our appreciation for the major economic boost to our economy, we want LGBT+ travelers to know they are truly welcome in our community,” Gray says.

Stilettos Spotlight Recap Over the last five months, OutClique has had the privilege of spotlighting the dazzling divas of Stilettos, a weekly two-hour extravaganza at The Pub On the Drive in Wilton Manors. We’ve learned about their individual journeys into the Drag World, their plans for the future, and the countless philanthropic endeavors that many of them spearhead. It’s been an honor to share their stories with our OutClique family of readers. We hope you’ve had as much fun getting to know them as we have! As we come to an end of this particular spotlight series, we wanted to share a little recap

about each of the Divas. Catch the amazing queens of Stilettos every Monday at 8PM at The Pub On the Drive! Candy Cox The Queen of these queens is Miss Candy Cox. “I’m the last of the originals,” she told OutClique backstage before a show. Stilettos began seven years ago as a country show and bounced around a couple of bars before finding its permanent home at Pub On the Drive. Since then, Candy has been the driving force behind the

show’s evolution. These days the five permanent hosts also welcome guest queens. “Every week we take turns hosting. [The host] is in charge of the lineup and special guests.” The drag community is large and South Florida is a magnet for new and established queens. “I just enjoy it. I’ve met so many people through drag. I love entertaining. I love the girls I work with. We love this bar. They treat us like royalty.” Mercury Rising-Cox “Mercury Rising-Cox is all about community and what kind

of stance I can take in it, in a way that is inspiring to not only my younger self, but everyone around me. I always strive to be my most authentic version both in public and online because I realized that the influence that we have doesn't stop just on stage. The world always looks to entertainers for that laugh, moment of hope, and humanity, if you will.” “For myself, I would say my future goal is to make it on a national level. I hope to be recognized as that entertainer from Wilton Manors who started at the Stilettos show to bring more awareness and attention to our venue, city, and state in a positive manner.”

Sharde’ L Ross | Photo Courtesy of Sharde’ L Ross

Sharde’ L Ross When South Florida female impersonator Sharde’ L Ross performs every Monday night at The Pub in Wilton Manors, audiences know they are in for one heck of an evening. “Sharde’ is a very classy female impersonator and always professional. There are certain girls that you see in the circuit, and every time you see them, you’re guaranteed a great show. You go to them because you’re guaranteed a great show. Because of that, I said to myself, why can’t I

be one of those individuals? Why can’t I be the girl where it’s like, oh, Sharde’ is in the show? Let’s go because we know she’s going to give us her best. That’s what I based my entire career on.” “It's just not a drag show for us. It's a chance to entertain, make somebody smile, and take them out of their day. We want them to call their girlfriends and say, I’m at the Pub, come on over!”

Leila Cox | Photo Courtesy of Corey Moore

Leila Cox When Leila Cox takes the stage, you know it, and she owns it. That’s not an easy task when you’re sharing the stage with four other fierce performers like she does every Monday at The Pub on the Drive in Wilton Manors. “I’ve been doing drag for ten years,” she told OutClique. “This is the big opportunity that you, as a drag queen, have been waiting for. A bar to support you and open the door for

you. Your name is up there. The community knows you up there. You know the community, you help the community. They know you outside and inside of drag.” In the end, she says all the fun and personal fulfillment is derived from the energy and love of her fans. “Thank you guys! Thanks for coming to us. We’re here for you. You haven’t seen the last of me!”

Verandah Lanai | Photo Courtesy of Michael J Prendergast

Verandah Lanai “Verandah Lanai is 'the front porch and the back porch.' She's got southern sass and a lot of class! Verandah is, without a doubt, someone with style, grace, and most importantly, humility. Ultimately, she is a performer at heart and has been ever since she was just a youngster.” “Stilettos gave me my start in drag. It was a chance that I needed. I was guided by some of the best queens who helped me on my path and became my Stilettos family. Without that, I would not be Verandah and I am

grateful to all my sisters who have been and are a part of Stilettos.” “I hope that Stilettos gets even bigger than it already is with gaining new audiences and new fans. Over the years, we have crafted a very well-run, professional show. We will continue to achieve our future goals at Pub on the Drive because we have a mutual support system: the owners, management, staff, and resident DJ Bill Hallquist.”

BBB Tips for Taking Control of Your Finances feel a greater sense of accomplishment (the “snowball method”). Use whichever method works best for you. The important thing is to start chipping away at your debt. Also, call your credit card company and ask if they will lower your interest rate. Some lenders will agree, just to keep you from transferring your debt to another lender with better terms. If you shave even a few percentage points off your rate, it can save you thousands and help pay down your balances faster.

Experts are warning that 2023 could be a volatile year for consumers. But every year can be a challenge and setting and sticking to a budget can help you get on the right track to a better financial future. •

Calculate your income. The first step to creating a budget (consumer.gov/managing-your-money/ making-budget#what-to-know) is to calculate your monthly net income, after taxes, so you know how much you are bringing home. Track your spending. Whether you prefer an app on your phone, computer software, or simply a notebook to jot down your expenses, keeping track of your spending is critical. It helps you see where you are actually spending your money, rather than where you think you are. Use this budget worksheet (consumer. gov/content/make-budget-worksheet) from the Federal Trade Commission to calculate your income and expenses. Categorize your spending. Create categories based on necessities (housing, utilities, food, transportation) and luxuries (entertainment, dining out, travel). If you have credit card balances, student loans, car payments or other debt, make “debt reduction” one of your categories. Set up a budget. Once you have an idea of where you are spending money, you can set up a realistic budget (nerdwallet.com/article/finance/how-to-budget). Many experts recommend following the 50/30/20 rule. Allow 50% of your income for your needs, 30% for wants, and use 20% to pay down debt or save.

Pay bills on time. Consider online bill-paying that eliminates writing checks, buying stamps, etc. Automatic payments can be scheduled ahead of time and can help you avoid late fees and penalties for missed payments.

Contribute to your retirement. Make sure you are contributing enough to your 401k plan to get the full matching contribution from your employer. If you get a raise at your job, try to put that extra money aside into your retirement account. You were able to survive on that income for this long, so you won't miss that extra cash, and your retirement account will greatly benefit.

Save for the big things. Big purchases, such as vacations or holiday gifts for the whole family, can easily blow your budget. Vacations are important and provide a chance to destress, but not if we go into debt for them. Avoid going into debt for these expenditures by saving up ahead of time and only spending what you were able to save. Many banks and credit unions offer savings clubs that might help.

Choose a budgeting system. Think about your financial goals and personality and select a budgeting system that works best for you. For example, a cashbased system can help curb overspending. A zerobased budget, where you account for every dollar you earn each month, is great for people who love to plan.

Build an emergency fund. Emergencies – car or home repair, unexpected medical expenses, or job loss – can easily throw you off track when it comes to budgeting. Financial experts suggest setting aside an emergency fund for six months of living expenses. If that seems too ambitious, start smaller. Having an emergency fund of even $500 is enough to get you out of many financial scrapes.

Pay down debt. If you have a credit card or other debts, be sure to include repayment in your budget. One method is to pay off the credit account or loan with the highest interest rate first (the “ladder method”). Another is to pay off the smallest balance first, so you

What we measure and track is key to what we achieve whether it is business goals or individual budgets. Setting and adhering to a solid budget can help you achieve personal financial success and put you in control to meet your goals with less stress.

Have Fun & Be Safe CAN & Midland Cares Create Cruising Message

C

ruising, for better or worse, is a pillar of LGBTQIA+ history and remains a part of our culture today. The act of cruising has evolved from when social stigma forced the community into the shadows of parks after dark and backrooms at bars. While those still exist, cruising has evolved into an open, social activity from bars to the apps, and myriad opportunities in between.

Nearly everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community has cruised at one point and many still do, and that’s who CAN and Midland say they want to reach. “Everyone. Sex is a natural part of life. Our goal is to support our patients' decisions but to still give them information and a medical environment that provides risk reduction for all.”

But one thing hasn’t changed: the chances of getting an STI.

Sex, especially in the LGBTQIA+ healthcare community, is openly discussed. Destigmatizing the discussion among the broader population is key to Midland Cares and CAN. Beltran refers to last year’s Monkeypox crisis as an example. “One of the significant successes was how the spread of Monkeypox could be curtailed by sexually active people being responsible and getting checked. We hope to convey this precisely with the Cruise Responsibly campaign.”

Midland Cares and CAN Community Health (CAN) are working to reduce risk without reducing people’s fun. The campaign is Cruise Responsibly and wants to change the connotation of the word ‘cruising.’ “In our communities, the association with cruising is often negative or so-called risky behaviors,” Greg Beltran, Midland Cares’ Director of Programs and Innovation told OutClique. “We wanted to reclaim that and turn it into a powerful message that emboldens the community and engages them in testing, prevention, and treatment. Paying homage to the cruise culture in the past shows how much has changed and so much has not.” The two entities have a large role in treating South Florida’s LGBTQIA+ health needs. Now the pair have merged and want to use their combined resources to effectively reach South Florida’s cruising community. “Now that the Midland family (Medical, Pharmacy, and Cares) is formally part of the CAN family, we can work together to broaden our reach to continue increasing viral suppression rates, individuals linked to PrEP, and trans-affirming care,” Beltran said. “Any successful pairing, like CAN and Midland, takes a sense of trust and commitment toward a common goal,” CAN’s Chief Communications Officer, Roger Capote, told OutClique. “As our communities have witnessed, both agencies have strived to help people in our communities while creating access points to care.”

Beltran concurred. “If we create a safe and judgmentfree space, people will be more open and willing to speak with their healthcare teams, increasing positive health outcomes and reducing the risk of health complications.” Their reputations precede them, as both groups have been called upon by national healthcare providers. “As one of the region's most extended providers of HIV care with 30 years of experience, we have been tapped by the CDC and HRSA for technical assistance opportunities for others throughout the country on best practices,” Capote said. CAN Community Health (CAN) is a not-for-profit, community-based organization with clinics that reach well beyond the Sunshine State. They serve Arizona, New Jersey, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia, providing specialized medical care for over 30 years. What began as a small health clinic founded by trailblazer Susan Terry in 1991 in Sarasota, FL, has now

transitioned into a national healthcare organization serving those affected by HIV, STDs, and Viral Hepatitis. Beltran says it’s that hybrid of national and local presence that makes the organizations perfect to promote Cruise Responsibly. “With Midlands hyperlocal presence in the South Florida region and CAN’s much larger oversight of different states, we can tackle problems more quickly and efficiently. Now, with Midland being a part of the CAN family, it will lead us to make a more significant difference in the people we serve.” International Initiative The timing of the campaign overlaps with Pride of the Americas on February 11, 2023. As premiere sponsors, Capote says they have a big platform to spread their message beyond Broward County. “With this being one of our backyard's first international Pride festivals, how couldn't we pull out all the stops? Our prevention teams have bilingual and trilingual individuals and marketing in multiple languages to ensure everyone is included in our messaging.” Thousands of tourists from across the Americas are expected to descend on Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park. With this opportunity to bridge geographic subcultures, Capote hopes to reach all the sexual subcultures. “We firmly commit to having champions lead the charge within these subcultures. But, as in anything, we understand there are arenas in which messaging and conversations are easily digested by folks who may be more identifiable with that group. That is why our diverse staff allows us to get into all of the communities and bolsters folks to know Nancy Dulisse

their status and use the necessary tools to stay healthy.” “Pride is really essential to us,” CAN Practice Administrator Patrice Gray said. “For many years we have participated in several Pride events within our region and beyond. Collaborating with Pride events has linked clients to our PrEP, nPEP, STI, and treatment services. In addition, we have built reputable relationships with several LGBTQ+ friendly organizations. Together, we have enlightened other organizations, businesses, and our community on HIV/ AIDS and HIV prevention.” Safety Net Many are aware of Midland Cares and CAN because of their insurance programs. While one of their key goals is to get HIV- people on PrEP and HIV+ patients in treatment, they also offer access to HRT, primary care, and more. Their impact on each patient can be dramatic. “We work with individuals who may be underinsured or insured and get them the quality care they deserve,” Capote said. “With access to programs like these, we provide quality care, increase viral suppression, lower rates of STD/Hep C infections and improve quality of life in communities, and continue to seek collaborative relations with local, state, and national partners to remove treatment barriers for all individuals in care. We are wholeheartedly committed to offering exceptional care and specialized medical services to every community member.” For Jay Saboe-Rodriguez, Midland’s Medical Outreach and Care Manager, the mission is personal. “The best part of Jay Saboe-Rodriguez

my job is engaging with the community where myself and my friends and family live. With our programs, we are able to provide education on sexual health, safe sex practices, and behavioral health to the LGBTQ+ community.” CAN and Midland also offer dental care, nutritional services, support groups, and harm reduction education and outreach. Despite the easy, open, and affordable access to services, there is still reluctance by many to sign up. Sach Fiol, CAN’s HIV Prevention Manager, says ending stigma is priority one. “As the HIV Prevention Manager, I am motivated and determined to reduce HIV stigma and increase awareness through trainings, presentations, and all other forms of education. In addition, the Prevention team and I are out in our community day and night, collaborating with our partners to provide testing and linkage to essential services.” While both are already intimately connected with South Florida, Midland and CAN want to cement and deepen their ties by creating the Champion Advisory Board. The goal is to include community members from various walks of life who want to make an impact. “It will be our job as the lead agencies to support them as allies with capacity building and truly walk with them as allies,” Capote said.

Sacha Fiol

Patients First It seems obvious that patient care would be front and center of any medical organization. But between insurance issues, scheduling, and other issues, the patient can get lost in the mix. Midland and CAN say they’re committed to a patient-centered focus now more than ever.

“Developing programs with patients in mind and building them up from there correlates with higher success outcomes with a programmatic focus,” Beltran said. “Everything we do at Midland Cares and CAN focuses on the patients and finding ways for us to assist them and ensure they stay healthy.” The insurance programs are a prime example. “We took the concept of addressing the health needs of the whole person, not just their sexual health, and ended up creating a paradigm that helps with all their healthcare needs. So, for example, the Midland Care Program will add dental and vision this coming year.” Saboe-Rodriguez says new patients will see the patient first focus immediately. “With the programs at Midland Cares, I am able to provide healthcare services in a safe space for patients of all races, genders, sexual identities, and more. I am excited to see how our ideas can help better the community.” Fiol says CAN and Midland are committed to patients long term. “We strive to continue building effective long-term partnerships and create more avenues to link clients to care, provide testing and education, and, most importantly, end the HIV epidemic.” When you go to Pride of the Americas or other events, large and small, be on the lookout for CAN and Midland. Their kickoff of Cruise Responsibly on an international stage will be the beginning of a campaign they believe will reach far beyond South Florida. “Pride is how we show the community that we care and are with them. Together, our drive and passion can impact lives all over the world.” Author: John Hayden Cover and Article Photos Courtesy of SRL Media

It is your life: Remember that you are the person who is suffering and not your friends and family. Don’t let the opinions of your peers prevent you from getting the relief that you deserve. Maintaining your anxieties should be your number one priority. Always do what is best for you and do not get into the habit of trying to please everybody else. You will not be alone: You will have people in your corner who will be able to help improve your mental health issues. You won’t feel as alone when attempting to get rid of your fears. It is best to be with others who are supportive and who will understand your situation. This will help make things easier when it comes to your fears and anxieties.

Improving Oral Hygiene, Enhancing Smiles, and Ensuring Comfort

A

healthy mouth is more than just a nice smile. It helps one to eat, drink, talk and smile. Since oral health and overall health are connected, having a healthy smile can help keep the rest of one’s body healthy, too. Dental care is integrated as part of Care Resource’s primary care program. Their team is committed to improving the overall quality of life of South Florida diverse communities in need. Care Resource’s dental services are available at their Midtown Miami, Oakland Park, and Little Havana health centers.

According to Manuel Casas, DMD, Dental Clinical Director, “At Care Resource, our dental office was designed with our patients in mind. By combining a calm atmosphere with the latest technology, we have created a place where patients receive the level of dental care they need and deserve. We understand that many people feel anxious about visiting the dentist, but you can be assured that your comfort is our top priority.”

Services include dental exams and radiographs, preventive services (cleanings), restorative (fillings) – composite (white) and amalgam (silver), night guards and bleaching, crown and bridge, removable prosthetics (partials and dentures), minor oral surgery, or selected root canal therapy.

The key to maintaining dental health is prevention. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating properly, and regular dental check-ups are essential to preventing dental problems. However, one should still schedule their dental appointments once or twice a year for a routine examination and cleanings, where dental issues can be found early and are usually simpler and more affordable to treat. In fact, more than 1 in 4 U.S. adults — 26 percent — have untreated dental cavities, according to oral health data gathered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most of the dental services at their health centers are provided on a sliding-fee scale that reduces the fees for those with lower incomes, lack of dental insurance, or the inability to pay.

For more information, please call 305.576.1234 or visit careresource.org. Existing patients are encouraged to schedule an appointment, renew medications, and more through the health center’s patient portal.

Memorial Healthcare System Emphasizes Diversity

I

t doesn’t matter if you’re just getting a regular checkup or going in for surgery, getting medical treatment can cause stress and anxiety in even the most stoic individuals. Compassion in doctors and nurses is important to all healthcare groups, and Memorial Healthcare System is also emphasizing diversity.

health system is committed to diversity and nurturing an environment that welcomes everyone. Furthermore, it also enforces the need for cultural humility education, so all providers learn about the importance of culturally competent care.”

They believe that seeing yourself reflected by the people treating you is important to bridging cultural differences, putting patients at ease, and earning their trust. Memorial is backing up their words with actions. The person in charge of that is Vanessa Nazario, their Corporate Director, Chief Diversity Officer. “My role is to design and implement the strategy in alignment throughout Memorial Healthcare System to ensure our commitment to creating a diverse, inclusive environment is embedded within the organizational culture,” she told OutClique.

The term diversity can encompass a lot and everyone is included in Memorial’s vision. That includes paying special attention to their LGBTQIA+ community. Their efforts are extensive, and include educational forums, genderinclusive bathroom signs, sponsoring community events, and engaging with staff and followers on social media. “We were extremely pleased with securing the system's inaugural HEI designation with the continued commitment to invest in other endeavors that convey the message that we welcome and embrace the LGBTQ+ community as patients and/or colleagues,” Nazario said.

Many companies have similar positions, but often they are not prioritized and are simply ‘checking a box.’ Nazario unequivocally says Memorial is different. “Memorial has a long history of nurturing a diverse workforce that serves a multiracial, multilingual patient community.” As a leader in their Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), they stress multiculturalism, and know it makes for a better patient experience as well as a better workplace.

Growing Diversity Nazario has spent nearly 30 years in jobs that promote diversity. With that extensive background, Memorial believes she’s poised to take their DEI to the next level. “I have learned that everyone has a story and their lived experiences matter, and as a DEI executive I must ensure safe spaces are created so everyone can thrive and feel a sense of belonging.”

Nazario says Memorial has taken its commitment to the next level. “Over the last two years, there were several key initiatives launched to support the journey: introduced both a Physician DEI Advisory Council and a Workforce Diversity Taskforce; increased cultural educational programs; and deepened our commitment to health equity.” Nazario and Memorial’s work is also recognized by the Human Rights Foundation. Memorial’s flagship hospital got an outstanding designation from the group’s Healthcare Equality Index.

“I would like to continue investing in the necessary resources for Memorial to be a DEI leader in the industry and that other healthcare systems use us as a model for their DEI journey. I envision DEI being a key driver in supporting positive health outcomes for the diverse community we serve, and it will be achievable by having a laser focus on health equity.”

Diversity Is the Best Medicine While diversity may seem like an intangible goal, it’s a very real thing that you can see and feel in Memorial’s staff. “It is important for patients to encounter staff who share similar attributes and can foster the trust that the

Nazario is also not naive. Diversity is a long-term goal that must constantly renew itself as the culture changes. She says Memorial can help lead those changes. “It requires dedication from many stakeholders, starting from the top with the Board of Commissioners and Executive Leadership support, and I know we will be successful in our endeavors given their involvement and dedication to our success.”

SMART Ride Celebrates Million Dollar Moment

hey trained. They raised money. They rode. And rode and rode and then rode some more. The hundreds of riders, along with invaluable volunteers, made the 19th iteration of the SMART Ride a milliondollar success.

total. “We were at $988,000. So I went on stage and told the crowd that if they promised to raise another $12,000 by the end of the year, we would announce a million dollars.” The crowd, which was simultaneously pumped up and exhausted from the ride, rose to the challenge.

The annual ride from Miami to Key West was the weekend before Thanksgiving, but the proceeds raised were just given out during a ceremony/party at Hunter’s Nightclub in mid-January. South Florida’s SMART Ride is the second largest AIDS bicycle ride in the country and the only one that returns 100% of money raised to HIV/ AIDS services in Florida.

They cheered their approval and then followed up on their promise. Weinzimer told OutClique the million-dollar goal was reached and surpassed quickly. At the January event, the money raised was given out to six benefiting organizations: A.H. Monroe, Broward House, Pridelines, Compass, Miracle of Love, and Epic. Weinzimer holds back about ten percent as an emergency fund. The 10% Lifeline fund is distributed throughout the year when an organization has an unforeseen expenditure for a critical service. This year, Pet Project and SunServe benefitted from that program.

Raising more than a million dollars is a huge success, but it almost didn’t happen. At the closing ceremonies in Key West, SMART Ride founder Glen Weinzimer saw the

While HIV/AIDS has largely disappeared from the headlines, it continues to be a crisis, especially for the younger generation. “One week before this year’s ride a young man died of AIDS. An unnecessary death,” Weinzimer said. “He chose to not take his meds. It speaks to youth not knowing our history.” Ready For Twenty Preparations for SMART Ride 20 (SR20) are already well underway. It’s set for November 17-18, 2023, and riders are already signing up. Weinzimer says the excitement is palpable. “SR20 has already broken records for early registration. Today we are sitting with as many participants registered as we did in May of 2022.” The landmark ride also comes with a new, huge, landmark goal. “We anticipate for our 20th anniversary to raise two million dollars, our highest ever.” Author: John Hayden

The milestone ride will also feature a big transition. The SMART Ride is a legacy project for Weinzimer. Now he has begun the process of relinquishing responsibility to a new person. LGBTQIA+ community leader Todd Delmay is taking over after SR20. He will ‘shadow’ Weinzimer this year to learn the ins and outs of the organization. The goal for SR20 is to lead the way for others to follow living healthy lives. “It’s our responsibility to make sure that the next generation coming up understands that HIV and AIDS can be deadly. We need to continue to focus on diversity, minorities, and stigma.” Weinzimer will depart knowing his project is in good hands for years to come. “It will be a celebration and a continued effort to make people aware that HIV/AIDS has not gone away.” Photos Courtesy of SRL Media

Ghost Light Society Soirée’s 2022 Host Committee

Young Patrons Enjoy an Interstellar Evening During the Ghost Light Society’s ‘Soirée in Space’ Presented by UKG The Parker, Fort Lauderdale’s iconic entertainment and cultural venue, was transformed into an out-ofthis-world setting for the Ghost Light Society’s 13th Annual Soirée, “Soirée in Space,” presented by UKG. More than 230 guests enjoyed dining, dancing, musical entertainment, and astronomical photo opportunities while raising $108,000 to benefit the arts-in-education and enrichment programs at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. “The annual Soirée at the Parker is the perfect opportunity to gather some of Broward’s top professionals together for a fun night, celebrate our appreciation for the arts and raise funds for the Broward Center’s outstanding educational initiatives,” said Jason B. Blank of Haber Blank LLP, who co-chaired this year’s Soirée along with Morgan Weinstein of Twig, Trade & Tribunal PLLC. Founded in 2009, the Ghost Light Society’s mission is to

engage and inspire a new generation of patrons to take an active role in promoting, celebrating, and supporting the performing arts. To date, the group’s annual Soirée has raised more than $1.3 million to support the Broward Center’s arts-in-education programs for Broward County students and continues to be one of the most anticipated events of the season. “Once again the Soirée exceeded expectations, and everyone had a fantastic time,” added Weinstein. “We also exceeded our fundraising goal, which wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of our volunteer committee and our extremely generous sponsors.” In addition to Presenting Sponsor UKG, the Soirée was supported by Platinum Sponsors Akerman LLP, AutoNation, Crowe LLP, JM Family Enterprises, Inc., MDW Communications and Twig Trade & Tribunal PLLC as well as several other Gold and Silver Sponsors.

Renovated Aquatic Center Reopens The long-awaited renovation of Fort Lauderdale’s aquatic center has opened to the public and is already drawing international attention. The prince and princess of Monaco joined local officials for a special celebration ahead of the grand opening that occurred at the end of January, 2023. It was a true honor to have Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene tour the facility and see the new state-of-the-art competition pools and one of the tallest dive towers in the world. Their visit is the beginning of a new era of international acclaim for the facility, which is also home to the International Swimming Hall of Fame. The renovation not only provides a significantly improved place for local residents to use, it is expected to restore Fort Lauderdale as a premier destination for competitive swimming and diving. While the prince and princess were visiting, collegiate teams from around the country were already using the pools for winter practice. Before it closed for reconstruction, the aquatic center had been home to numerous international and national competitions and exhibitions, with many competitive and Olympic swimmers and divers training there. The complex’s legacy includes the Annual College Swim Forum, U.S. National Swimming Championships, YMCA National Swimming & Diving Championships, U.S. Masters National Swimming Championships, NCAA National Water Polo Championships, and the FINA/U.S. International Diving Invitational. The city awarded a contract four years ago to rebuild the center. The signature feature is the 27-meter dive tower with nine platform levels – the first permanent 27-meter dive tower in the Western Hemisphere. The tower has already earned a top architectural design award for its iconic sculptural form. The old 50-meter main competition pool was removed and replaced with a fully FINA compliant pool that is 53 meters by 25 meters with 10 lanes. The 50-meter training pool was repaired with new surfacing and gutters. The project also included new grandstands, locker rooms, stadium lighting and restrooms. In the coming months, I hope the city will finalize a deal with the Hall of Fame that will reimagine their part of the complex into a contemporary, high-end facility that will create a signature look and feel for the entire site. At its heart, the aquatic center remains a place available to families for lap swimming and diving, helping make the sports and water activities part of life for young and old alike. This project has been part of the city’s ongoing efforts to expand amenities for our residents. We built the DRV PNK Stadium and brought major-league soccer to town. With the help of the Florida Panthers hockey team, we are renovating War Memorial Auditorium into a modern event venue that will also have ice rinks available to the public and team use. We’ve expanded parks and recreation offerings with a just-signed agreement to create a major pickleball complex, plans to build an arts park and cultural center downtown and upgrades to neighborhood parks across the city through our parks bond program. Fort Lauderdale is truly a great place to live and work and is gaining attention around the world for this great quality of life. Sincerely, Dean Content Courtesy of Mayor Dean Trantalis |

Gay BSO Deputy Rises Through the Ranks While many law enforcement agencies, either implicitly or explicitly, discourage their LGBTQIA+ officers from coming out, Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) encourages their members to be out and proud. The latest example of this is the promotion of Paul Auerbach to the rank of Captain. “Getting to Captain was not easy nor a short journey,” he told OutClique. “I was with BSO for 19 years before getting promoted to Captain.” Auerbach’s long been a proactive representative of our community, which isn’t always easy in certain professions, including law enforcement. “I think BSO is very inclusive. I have been very fortunate that I haven’t run into many obstacles when it comes to my career and homophobia.” Auerbach says others haven’t been as lucky. “I am friends with a few other Deputies who have moved here from other agencies because of the career-ending administrations they faced. As an agency, perhaps because of our progressiveness in South Florida.”

102 | OutClique.com

Sky’s the Limit His career to captaincy wasn’t a non-stop trip. Auerbach began adulthood as a flight attendant. He spent a total of eight years with three major carriers. The jet set life was exciting, until reality stepped in. “I was in Boston at Logan airport on 9/11 waiting to board a flight home. The combination of the trauma, the aftermath of aviation life, the worry of being able to keep my job and wanting to be closer to my family made me reevaluate my long-term goals.” The worldwide consequences of that day inspired him to make a hands-on difference. “I wanted to focus on trying to be an Air Marshal, so I needed some law enforcement experience. I started applying to several departments, but I ultimately wanted to work at the Broward Sheriff’s Office.” Starting at BSO is hardly entry level. One of the 20 most populous counties in America and incredibly diverse, you

need to be on your game from day one. It also means potential to grow. “The Sheriff’s Office provides more opportunities for advancement and growth due to its size. Promotions are offered every year and nearly all ranks. It is one of the major advantages of the agency over smaller departments.” But growth opportunities weren’t just professional. Personal growth was available too. With confidence from spending years at 30,000’ plus his own outlook, Auerbach decided to be out on his own terms. “When I started my career, I wasn’t entirely out, but I told myself I would not lie about who I was if anyone asked.”

organizations like the Safe 2b Me Coalition and the GSA Network. Last year, as a direct result of my new position, BSO and Fort Lauderdale Police were able to participate in the 2022 Gender and Sexualities Summit at a local high school.” Love & Family Auerbach is also a family man. He met his partner six years ago while working security at Georgie’s Alibi Monkey Bar on New Year’s Eve. They both have odd schedules which has helped them support each other. The promotion may actually help them spend more time with each other. “As a Captain, I can’t work extra duty shifts anymore which allows me to focus more on us and building our life together.”

Then one night after his shift, he and his patrol partner were looking for food and a drink. “It was 11pm on a Tuesday night. She drove us to three places she knew of, but they had all just closed so she looked at me and told me to choose a place. The only bars I knew were gay places, and so we went to the Alibi. We have been very close friends ever since.”

They’re also ‘dog dads,’ and their names reflect Auerbach’s career. “We have two pups. The older one is almost 8 and her name is Taser. She is a boxer/pit mix. The baby is a year and a half, and his name is Kevlar. We believe he is a beagle/chihuahua. We adopted Kevlar together from a local rescue. Luckily my boyfriend liked the fact I am in law enforcement and didn’t mind the name. We have been thinking about adopting a third.”

A New Sheriff in Town Since that night 17 years ago, he’s pushed himself and the department to demonstrate acceptance at all levels and founded the LGBTQ+ Liaison Committee in 2019. “It was originally started to give LGBTQ+ employees a voice in the agency. With prior administrations, myself and a few others were sought out for public relations events during Pride Month or for fundraising events that did not directly benefit the LGBTQ community itself.”

With a partner, pups, and a career, Auerbach seems like he’s found a way to have it all. And his new position as captain means LGBTQIA+ in Broward County will not only be heard, but also listened to for years to come.

When Sheriff Gregory Tony took over the department and attended his first Stonewall Pride Festival, Auerbach and fellow committee members decided it was time to step up. “We asked for a meeting with the Sheriff to put all of our cards on the table. Since then, we have hit the ground running.” Now they have a team of about 25 employees from all divisions. Accomplishments thus far include improved gender terminology, community relations events, and working with LGBTQ+ youth. His current assignment is working in the Youth and Neighborhood Service Unit, Juvenile Division, managing the School Resource Officer program, the BSO Explorer Unit, The Police Athletic League (PAL), and election security. “Since my unit deals directly with youth interactions, I can build relationships with other Author: John Hayden

In Conversation with Musical Artist Billy Mick

H

ailing from Orlando, Florida, openly gay singersongwriter Billy Mick is celebrating life, community, family, and friends in his music. While attending Manchester Pride in 2018 with his husband, Mick was inspired by the overwhelming sense of acceptance he experienced, and after seeing so many diverse and talented performers on the musical stages, he realized it was time to share his own artistry with others. With two studio albums released and a third in the works, Mick has found his voice and he is excited for what the future holds. Mick took some time to talk about his music and current projects with OutClique. Denny Patterson: Thank you for taking some time to chat with me, Billy! Can you begin by telling us how you got your start in music? Billy Mick: I have always been into music. Like, when I was a little kid and everyone else was outside playing, I was in front of a stereo speaker listening to records. I like all kinds of music, and I really kind of started writing music when I was a small child. When I was six or seven years old, I got my first keyboard, and I just wrote some songs. I actually put one of them on my first album, which turned out very well. Then when I moved to Orlando in the early 90s, I tried to jump on the whole boy band wagon. I recorded the

104 | OutClique.com

songs, I did the photos, I did all the things, and everyone was like, you’ll never make it in this industry as an out gay male. So, I kind of stepped away from it for a while, and then in 2019, it felt like the right time to start doing it again. Denny Patterson: How would you describe your musical style and aesthetic? Billy Mick: I’m very eclectic, but my overall aesthetic would be rock‘n’roll. That's my jam. Denny Patterson: Are there any themes you always try to incorporate into your songs? Billy Mick: It's not that I try to, it just ends up that way (laughs). I go to my engineer being like, this is the last preachy one on the album. I swear! I'm very, very much into individuality and equality, and a lot of my themes are kind of hard hitting. I always think of that whenever I’m going to perform. I’m like, okay, what do I want the audience to feel? Do I want them to feel like I'm yelling at them, or should I do something that's a little more lighthearted? But overall, a sense of self-worth, self-value, respect, and appreciating that in others. Denny Patterson: You mentioned a minute ago that people didn’t think you would make it in this industry. Have you encountered any major challenges being an openly gay man in the rock'n'roll genre? Billy Mick: No, I wouldn’t say that I have. Live performance

wise, I kind of took my music and put it into a one-man show, and kind of told my life story through that. I’ve given it a theatrical spin, even though it is more rock’n’roll, and I think it’s been received very well. I've gotten to perform at a couple of Prides, and I’ve had those moments where I’ve gotten to just go out there and sing my stuff, but no, I don’t think that I've actually run into any challenges with that. The biggest challenge I’ve faced is what any musician runs into, which is there’s never enough exposure. It’s pointless to make great music if no one’s listening to it! Denny Patterson: What has been your favorite part about performing at Pride events? Billy Mick: The energy is just so fantastic. My husband and I went to Manchester Pride in 2018, which was when I had the realization of, wait a second, I want to do this. When I first started, I was so caught up in just trying to get music out there and hoping people would listen to me, but when we went to Manchester Pride, they had three different stages, and they were filled all day long. People were watching and enjoying the performers, and I was like, this is what I want to do. So, I buckled down and started releasing stuff in 2019. Denny Patterson: You have already released two albums, and you are now working on a third. What can you tell us about that? Billy Mick: I am so excited about it! The album itself is called I’m a Rockstar, and it’s a little less preachy. This one is very much about self-value, loving yourself, and loving the people that make you better because of who they are and what they bring to you. I like this one a lot, and I’m super excited. Denny Patterson: Do you have a release date in mind? Billy Mick: It’s going to be a minute. Probably not until June or July. I’ve been releasing singles, because let’s face it, in the day and age we live in, people don’t care about the album as a whole or the meaning behind it. They want something now, so I’m just going to keep releasing singles from it. Denny Patterson: What do you ultimately hope audiences take away from your music? Billy Mick: A sense of positivity and a little more understanding of the fellow human that is standing next to you. Let’s step back and see what is really great about this person, and I wish more people did that.

Denny Patterson: I love that you highlight Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors in your music video for "Beautiful Eyes." What was the decision behind that? Billy Mick: We have stayed a couple times at the Worthington with a group of friends, and the last time we stayed, I was getting ready to release the song. I was like, let’s come back next weekend. This has all the locations, and I wanted it to kind of feel like you were just on a date with me. I’m going to all these fabulous places and you’re seeing all the art walls in the back, I was obsessed. So, we came home for a few days, then turned around and went back next weekend to shoot the entire music video down there. Denny Patterson: What are some future goals you hope to accomplish with your career? Billy Mick: I've been doing a variety show, and I recently celebrated a year of doing that. Somebody wanted me to do a one-person show at a venue that had a very large space, and I've always been a huge fan of variety shows. The old Cher show, Sonny & Cher, Donny & Marie, that kind of stuff. I was like, okay, I’ll come and do a show, but I’m not doing a show just by myself for an hour. I can’t possibly be entertaining just as a solo act for an hour in this big space. It would have to be a variety show, so I started bringing in local talents and tried to constantly change it up. Have different people and showcase their art. I like doing that, and I'm finally gaining momentum with that. I would also like to get back to doing more of my stuff. With the variety show, it’s just fun and entertaining. I like the idea of getting back to doing more concert style stuff, and I want to get a band. I want to get a band together and do a really good rock’n’roll show. It would be cool to get out there and just jam with people. Denny Patterson: Before we wrap up, are there any other upcoming projects or anything else you would like to mention or plug? Billy Mick: Yes! If you didn’t see it during the holiday season, you should watch A Christmas Karen. It’s a hilarious movie, and they wanted to use my song “The Tourist” in the film. I also played a small cameo, which was very exciting. I’ve been getting a lot of feedback, people saying, oh my gosh, I really like your song, and I released that song a little over a year ago. It’s nice that it’s receiving a little bit more exposure, so check that out, as well as all my albums. They’re available on every platform.

e all face life challenges and seek to find our way in life which is why Rotterdam by John Brittain, a modern play with a different perspective, will be part of Island City Stage’s 11th South Florida season starting January 19, 2023. The four-actor ensemble will awaken audiences through February 19, 2023. “Although politics and media seem focused on the trans community, we don’t often hear personal stories about those who seek to transition and the effect that can have on those closest to them,” said Andy Rogow, artistic director of Island City Stage. “Rotterdam is a bittersweet comedy whose characters are in transition in one way or another.” Rotterdam with co-producer Sue Wilder is a moving and sensitive exploration of gender identity and relationships. Rotterdam tells the story of lesbian couple Alice (Suzanne Ankrum), who is struggling to come out to her parents, and Fiona (Autumn Horne) who tells Alice that she has always identified as a man. What happens next is a bittersweet comedy about gender, sexuality and being a long way from home. The show also features Abbie Fricke and Robert Koutras. Set sponsors are Doug Pew and Don Croxton, costume sponsors are Thomas Nichols and Dan Chadburn, and lighting and sound sponsor Scott Bennett.

Island City Stage will present its introspective Behind the Red Curtain public forum series tied to this show on January 9 (‘‘Living the Truth-Seeing the Trans Community Through a Different Lens”), as well as its popular Women’s Night at the Theatre. Additionally, the second Sunday performance of all 11th anniversary season shows will be Mimosa Sunday which includes a pre-show complimentary Mimosa (21 and over), a light bites reception and a post-show talk back. Seating limited and subject to availability based on confirmed ticket reservation on a first-come basis. Mimosa Sunday for Rotterdam will be on January 29. Creating quality professional theatrical experiences focused on the LGBT+ community for a universal audience, Island City Stage’s 11th South Florida season offers thought-provoking productions that explore bittersweet longing, gender questions, loneliness, the ins and outs of friendship, the magic of random human connection, and ethnic conflict within the generational divide. Upcoming shows include I Wanna F@#king Tear You Apart by Morgan Gould from March 2 – April 2, Tracy Jones by Stephen Kaplan from May 18 – June 18, and Springfield Pride Commissioned by Island City Stage from August 3 – September 3.

DJ Thunderpuss consists of internationally renowned DJ Barry Harris from Toronto and DJ Chris Cox from Las Vegas. The duo, who haven’t played together in over 20 years, recently released a remix of “Don’t Cry For Me,” which was featured in the film Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody.

Cuchi Cuchi! In Conversation with Charo By Denny Patterson

H

ola, amigos! Your favorite music and pop culture icon is coming to South Florida!

Entertaining millions throughout her career and instantly recognizable by her trademark expression “Cuchi Cuchi,” Charo is a virtuoso guitarist, singer, composer, actress, and comedienne, who has been an integral proponent of contemporary Latin music. She was named “Female Pop Album of the Year Award” at the Billboard International Latin Music Conference for her flamenco inspired platinum album, Guitar Passion, and she has appeared in countless hit television shows and more than 45 appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

Charo will be at the Broward Center’s Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on Saturday, February 11, 2023, and OutClique caught up with the artist before her upcoming visit. Full of charm, wit, and life, you just can’t help but smile by talking with her. Denny Patterson: Hello, Charo! Thank you for taking some time to chat with me. What can we expect from your upcoming performance at the Broward Center in South Florida? Charo: Hola, Denny! I love Florida, and we’re going to have a great fiesta! It’s very exciting as a performer when audiences are happy, applauding, and dancing, and that’s

why I am so excited to bring this brand-new show. It’s going to be fantastic. I guarantee you, and I’m not bragging, but I guarantee it’s going to be a big fiesta with the concept of flamenco and guitar classical masterpieces. Thank you so much for this opportunity and inviting me to Florida! Denny Patterson: Of course, we’re excited to see you! What do you enjoy the most about performing live? Charo: I only have happiness when I’m performing. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it’s the truth. When I am performing in front of an audience, it’s like magic. You connect with the audiences and everybody is in perfect harmony, it’s priceless. Denny Patterson: Have you always had a passion and desire to pursue entertainment? Charo: Yes, 100 percent. Music and people saved my life. There’s just a certain energy that people give, and it can either bring you up or bring you down. For me, they bring me up, and we need each other. We need each other more than ever, and we are looking for ways to escape. Allow me to do my job and entertain you. Denny Patterson: You began playing guitar at the age of nine and have been declared the best classical flamenco guitarist in the world, twice. What drew you to that particular instrument? Charo: That’s a good question, thank you so much for asking. First of all, the guitar, you don’t need an orchestra with these six strings. If you have a good teacher, they will teach you where each finger needs to go. You can make your own concert just by playing that beautiful instrument. You listen to your heart, listen to your heartbeat, and let it go, but you have to practice, practice, practice. It’s a beautiful instrument. You will never catch me playing the drums or anything because the guitar is so sensual and intimate. Like I said, if you have a good teacher, each finger will know what job to do. They’re your accompaniment. You don’t need a big orchestra to make people listen, and my passion for the guitar started at an early age. I was born in a city that is now much bigger called Murcia, which is near Valencia, and it was Gypsy musicians that piqued my interest in the guitar. I was fascinated by the music they played and the dances they did. I was hooked by the age of seven or eight, and the technique that they use is very different from what schools teach now. I knew this was my instrument to play.

Denny Patterson: How often do you still practice playing guitar? Charo: Believe it or not, three hours a day! To play the guitar, skill is necessary, and when I say skill, I’m not playing guitar with a pick, but with each finger. You get to know exactly the delight of where each finger goes in every case you're performing. So, practicing for this girl is like vitamins. I need it. I go through all my favorite pieces like I am performing for an audience. If I don’t practice, then I feel guilty. I feel like I did something very wrong. Denny Patterson: Of course, you are known for your trademark expression, “Cuchi Cuchi!” How did that come about? Charo: I am so happy with the “Cuchi Cuchi” expression because it has really taken me to the bank (laughs). What a legacy it has become, but honestly, it was an accident. What “Cuchi Cuchi” came from is such a disappointment for everybody when they know because everybody thinks that is sex. Cuchillo was the name of my dog, and he had a problem with his back. He couldn’t wiggle from side to side, he would wiggle back and forth, and I would copy his movement. I called him Cuchi for short, and it caught on with people. Now, of course, audiences expect me to say it all the time, but I don’t. I only say it once or twice in my shows. Denny Patterson: Are you currently working on any other music or acting projects? Charo: Right now, I am working in business because my husband passed away a couple years ago, and I accumulated a lot of his business. I’m trying to teach my son and introduce him to business people and lawyers, and I’m not doing a good job (laughs). I was born to entertain people. Denny Patterson: What are some future goals you hope to accomplish with your career? Charo: I am a Capricorn, so there is much, much more that I want to accomplish. People think Capricorns are crazy, we are, but it’s because we’re passionate about what we do. We keep going, and right now, I’m excited to come to Florida to test the new show and some new music. It’s so exciting, and it keeps me going. I don’t know how to say goodbye!

Masterworks III Featuring Geneva Lewis and Gabriel Martins

Wednesday, February 15, 2023 The Parker

For Masterworks III, the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) will present Johannes Brahms’ final symphonic work, Double Concerto, featuring New Zealand-born violinist Geneva Lewis and cellist Gabriel Martins. Lewis has forged a reputation as a musician of consummate artistry whose performances speak from and to the heart, while Martins has established himself as one of the world’s most enthralling young artists, with a deep commitment to the timeless masterpieces of classical music. This concert will also feature the Fifth Symphony by famed Finnish composer Sibelius, and the spirited overture to Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict. OutClique caught up with the duo to talk more about their upcoming South Florida appearance and more. Denny Patterson: Can you begin by telling us what we can expect from your performance with the SFSO, and what are you personally looking forward to the most about it? Gabriel Martins: Geneva and I will be guest soloists for the Brahms Double Concerto. This is a unique concerto in that two soloists are featured rather than the traditional one. Other than just being a great work by a great composer, it offers many interesting and special dialogues on stage. At times, the violin and cello are conversing with one another, at other times they team up as an entity

beside the orchestra. It is a dramatic and beautiful work that is always a privilege to play. Geneva Lewis: It’s always a very special privilege to share the stage with Gabriel, and I’m very much looking forward to collaborating with Maestra Sebrina Alfonso and the SFSO on this wonderful work, which Gabriel has described so well. Denny Patterson: Is this your first time playing with the SFSO? Geneva Lewis: Yes, it will be the first time playing with the SFSO for both of us! Denny Patterson:What are you hoping to take away from this experience? Geneva Lewis: I always enjoy getting the opportunity to play with musicians/ensembles for the first time. There’s so much opportunity for exciting new discoveries. Gabriel Martins: Absolutely. The chance for collaboration is always a new and exciting project. Also, of course, getting to connect with new audiences. I’ve always enjoyed coming to Florida to play, or to visit. Denny Patterson: What do you ultimately hope audiences take away from Masterworks III? Gabriel Martins: The chance to experience these classical masterpieces. The art of classical music is something that can be so unbelievably powerful, so much so that Geneva and I have decided to devote our lives to

the pursuit of its excellence. I hope that in a concert full of great works such as this one, we can do our part to share its wonder with audiences. Geneva Lewis: I hope that people can come away from this concert with their love for music satisfied and strengthened. It’s so special to come together in a shared space and experience such breathtaking music as a community. Whether the music is an escape for us, or feels entirely relevant to our own lives, I hope the evening will provide the opportunity to be emotionally moved. Denny Patterson: Have you both always had a passion for music? How did your journey begin with your respective instruments? Geneva Lewis: Music has always been my greatest passion, and one that I was surrounded by from an early age. I started playing violin when I was three, following in the footsteps of my older siblings, who are both musicians as well. Gabriel Martins: I became completely obsessed with classical music in my teenage years. I was incredibly fortunate to grow up going to the IU Jacobs School of Music and studying with my long-time teacher, Susan Moses. She gifted me with a love for the arts that will stick with me for my whole life, no doubt. Denny Patterson: Not only do you perform together, but you are also an actual couple. What’s the story behind your romance? Gabriel Martins:We were graduate students together at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. We were actually sharing the same management (Concert Artists Guild) at the time, so we had many chances to work together as well. Geneva Lewis: We’d crossed paths for some years before really getting to know each other but spent a lot of time together during the earlier months of the pandemic and became very close. Denny Patterson: What would you say are the perks and challenges of working/performing together? Geneva Lewis: Well before we were together, Gabriel has been one of the musicians I’ve admired the most, and I’ve always been profoundly inspired by his artistry. The opportunity to collaborate with him purely on that

artistic level is something that will remain incredibly exciting and special for me, and I learn so much every time we play together. Of course, we can both be strongly opinionated and quite stubborn at times, which leads to musical disagreements, but that’s just a natural part of the interpretive process. And of course, it’s very meaningful to have more time to spend together in any capacity - being able to share the stage is a very special cherry on top! Gabriel Martins: It certainly is a great joy to be able to work and spend time together, on stage or off. The life of a traveling musician can be very lonely at times, and we definitely look forward to the trips that we are able to do together. From the artistic side, I believe we are constantly pushing each other to grow. Although we work and prepare in quite different ways, this can actually often bring to light things that we wouldn’t think about otherwise. The bottom line is that Geneva is a very special artist, and I consider myself lucky to be around her every day. Denny Patterson: What are some future goals you hope to accomplish with your respective careers? Gabriel Martins: My goal in this field has always been to ‘carry the flag,’ as they say. To pass on the tradition of classical music at the highest level. Geneva Lewis: The ultimate personal goal is unattainable the beautifully endless attempt to become better and better as an artist, musician, and person. Career-specific goals are difficult to answer, because our journey as classical musicians can be such a winding road. I just hope to be as genuine as I can, and share music that I love. Denny Patterson: Before we wrap up, are there any other upcoming projects or anything else you would like to mention or plug? Gabriel Martins: Since the pandemic, I have become very passionate about online teaching. I’ve always considered it a duty to pass on what has been given to me, and the chance to work with people all over the world now has been very special. Anyone who may be interested can find more information on my website. Geneva Lewis: There are always exciting new things in the works. I’m looking forward to lots of upcoming concerts, many of which are with Gabriel. My website is regularly updated, so more specific projects will be shared there!

Wicked Returns to the Arsht Center

W

icked, Miami’s most popular musical, will make its anticipated return to Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County from February 15 through March 5, 2023. The Broadway sensation Wicked looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin, who is smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.” With a thrilling score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” Wicked has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade,” and by Time Magazine as “a magical Broadway musical with brains, heart, and courage.” NBC Nightly News calls the hit musical “the most successful Broadway show ever.” Tickets to Wicked may be purchased now at the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at arshtcenter.org. The 2022-2023 Broadway in Miami subscription season

is presented by Bank of America and Florida Theatrical Association in association with the Adrienne Arsht Center, along with support from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Now the 5th longest-running show in Broadway history, Wicked is the winner of over 100 international awards including the Grammy Award and three Tony Awards. Wicked has been seen by over 60 million people worldwide and has amassed over $5 billion in global sales. Dixie’s Tupperware Party Returns to Kravis Center

February 17 - 19, 2023

T

he Belle of the bowls that “burp” is back! Dixie Longate herself is returning to the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts during Dixie’s Tupperware Party. The feisty redhead is excited to share the latest Tupperware catalog offerings, along with her trademark homespun wisdom, for five performances on February 17 - 19, 2023. OutClique caught up with Dixie as she was in her hometown in Alabama getting ready for the holidays before hitting the road on another nationwide tour. “I’m so excited to return to Florida where everybody is real neighborly, and it’s nice and warm, and people are only bundled up when they go to pee by the dumpster,” says Dixie. She speaks in rapid-fire Southern cadence, one “bless-your-heart” away from a quip at any moment. Created in 2007, Dixie Longate has traveled the globe, bringing laughter and joy as fresh as the food her

Tupperware protects to thousands of fans and new clients each year. For those who aren’t familiar with a Tupperware party, Dixie is only too happy to educate. “It hurts my heart that kids today don’t know about Tupperware, but I’m gonna learn them about food storage, and that it lasts forever, and everybody loves it, and why it’s the best thing,” says Dixie. She sees herself as a woman on a mission, spreading a message of empowerment and continuing the legacy first started by Tupperware party inventor, Brownie Wise. “You wouldn’t even know about Tupperware without Brownie, who saw them sittin’ there on the shelves and thought, why don’t I just take those off the shelves and bring them to my friends?” The innovative product grew to be a worldwide phenomenon, with Tupperware parties providing income for thousands of women throughout the 1960’s to today. While the parties are no longer ubiquitous in American

households, the company is still going strong, giving Dixie ample opportunities to create more creative uses for the durable product beyond food storage. “The way people cook changes, so Tupperware always changes. Have you heard of Kimchi?” Dixie asks, referring to the notoriously strong-smelling Korean cabbage dish. “Well, Tupperware has a product just for that. New products are always coming out to make cooking easier, so you can get out of the kitchen and into the bedroom where you’ll do more important things.” Laughter is a huge part of any party and Dixie brings a heaping dose of it to her Tupperware party, where the simple plastic pieces of storage provide endless opportunities for hilarity with all the guests. “There’s always something different about the show,” explains Dixie. “There are always new interactions, which keeps me from getting bored and drinking all the time. I mean, I’m drinking all the time anyway, but that’s just ‘cause I’m an overachiever.” During the show, Dixie shares moving stories about her own life and how she rose to become the Tupperware brand’s top salesperson. “I became the #1 salesperson in the U.S. and Canada, and was invited to the annual Jubilee, where they gave me a sash and a crown, and can you just imagine me up there? I’m still high on the list, but the most important thing each day is just bein’ up there on that stage each night, and making people smile.” The pandemic put a damper on Dixie’s Tupperware parties, but it didn’t stop her from spreading joy online through her vlogs, where she continued her message of standing tall, sharing smiles, and making moonshine out of lemons. She also developed a new show: Cherry Bombs and Bottle Rockets, which she’ll tour this season across the country. In the meantime, South Florida patrons have the chance to discover some new uses for the 75 years-strong products, while sharing in the joy of Dixie’s delightful Southern charm. “You don’t have to be a woman to enjoy the party, it’s come one, come all” says Dixie. “Even if you’re not lookin’ to getting Tupperware, you’re going to smile and have a good time. That’s the whole reason I do it. It’s about changing things and making everyone feel a little better. We’ll have some fun and spread some joy.” Brownie would be proud. Author: Elizabeth Dashiell

Conducted by Artistic Director Pablo Mielgo, the Symphony performs Aaron Copland’s and Astor Piazzolla’s music and sounds, which were defined by the portraits their music painted. From Tango to ballet, and distinct geographic cultures, their music shaped their homeland’s musical voice. Referred to by his peers and critics as "the Dean of

Argentine composer, arranger, and bandoneon player, Piazzolla transformed traditional tango music by incorporating elements from jazz and classical. Music critic Stephen Holden once described Piazzolla as "the world's foremost composer of Tango music."

Remember how things were before the COVID pandemic and high inflation? Latinos Salud does, and the agency will take you back, with two amazing Gala events this season. “We’re holding our tickets to our pre-COVID pricing,” said Rafaelé Narváez, co-founder and Director of Health Programs for the agency. “Since ticket purchases will pass through our Florida AIDS Walk team, they will be matched by our generous sponsors at AHF. So your ticket still provides strong support to the agency, without the need to increase our pricing.” Each Gala event is also designed to give guests more breathing room, literally. For the first time, the agency will host a separate Gala in each of the counties it serves. “By staging separate Galas in Broward and Miami-Dade, we’re able to spread our guests out, and cap attendance to each event. We were also very intentional in choosing event spaces with soaring ceilings, and high air flow,” said Dr. Stephen Fallon, the agency’s Executive Director.

The Broward event will return to the opulent Design Center of the Americas in Davie, on February 25th. For the Miami-Dade event on March 25th, Latinos Salud will pop the cork in the gleaming atrium of The Current Miami on West Flagler, which just underwent an $8M renovation. Get decked out in your party or evening wear and reconnect with the community at either of these community favorite events. Both events feature free parking, open bar, passed small plates, entertainment, and a fast-paced program spotlighting the ways that Latinos Salud helped so many community members in 2022. Tickets are just $175 for regular entry to either event, or $225 for VIP cocktail hour, meet and greet, and personalized delivery of the agency’s Benefit in a Box. Hollywood’s Medium Tyler Henry Comes to The Broward Center Tyler Henry, star of the break-out hit NETFLIX series Life After Death with Tyler Henry and E!’s Hollywood Medium with Tyler, returns to the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center on Sunday, February 26, 2023, after a sold-out engagement last year. Henry began receiving intuitive mental images when he was only 10 years old with the foretelling of his grandmother’s death. As he continued cultivating his gift, word began to spread around his small California hometown and, as a teenager, he began thinking of incorporating his gift into a career. After graduating from high school early, Henry began training as a hospice nurse believing his calling was to help people comfortably transition to the other side. At the same time, he did private readings at a local bookstore and word of his talents quickly spread to Los Angeles where well-known celebrities began to request private readings. In Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, he was able to offer readings to Jim Parsons, Megan Fox, RuPaul, David Arquette and Chrissy Metz, among others, providing specific, detail-oriented, and personal messages from the other side and turning even some of the biggest skeptics, including Moby, Tom Arnold, and Dr. Drew, into believers. A best-selling author, Henry has released Between Two Worlds –Lessons From The Other Side and Here and Hereafter. Last March, Henry did a reading for a skeptical Erin Jensen at USA TODAY. She came away reporting, “After my reading, I'm convinced of Henry's ability. Like him, I believe we all have intuition…If you believe in an afterlife (and I do) why couldn't spirits have figured out a way to communicate? My cousin whose father died, and the sister of my cousin who drowned, are convinced that

Henry is the real deal. The thing I'll treasure most from the experience is the peace they got from the messages relayed to them.” In "An Evening of Hope and Healing" at the Broward Center, Henry explains how he communicates with the other side as well and presents live audience readings and holds an interactive audience Q and A. Buy tickets online at BrowardCenter.org or Ticketmaster. com or by phone at 954.462.0222 or in person at the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office.

Funny Girl’s Leading Man on Broadway Comes to The Parker

R

amin Karimloo, currently starring as Nicky Arnstein opposite Lea Michele in the smash hit Broadway revival of Funny Girl, joins Seth Rudetsky in The Broadway Concert Series at The Parker presented by Mark Cortale on February 26, 2023. When comparing him to the real-life Arnstein whom Karimloo portrays, The New York Times gushed, “That Arnstein wasn’t remotely gorgeous, and Karimloo totally is, we can allow. Karimloo also sings beautifully and, to the extent the new book tries to beef up the role, he’s got the beef to do it.” Becoming one of Broadway’s top leading men, Karimloo made an impression from the start having scored a Tony® nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his Broadway debut as Valjean in the 2014 revival of Les Misérables. Since then, he performed in the world premiere of The Prince of Broadway, directed by the late Hal Prince, and originated the role of Gleb Vaganov in the Broadway premiere of Anastasia. Karimloo started out and made his name in some of the West End’s most enduring productions, most notably Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables. He then originated the role of the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera sequel Love Never Dies in 2010. Other noteworthy performances include Che in Evita (Vancouver and Japan), Tom in the U.K. premier of Murder Ballad (London), Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar

(Japan), Anatoly in Chess (Kennedy Center and Japan) and Archibald Craven in The Secret Garden (Lincoln Center). He joins Rudetsky in the series’ unique format that creates a seamless mix of intimate behind-the-scenes stories prompted by Rudetsky’s insightful, funny, and revealing questions and the music from the artists’ stellar careers. Often called “The Mayor of Broadway,” Rudetsky is the afternoon deejay on the SiriusXM Broadway channel as well as the host of Seth Speaks. He spent many years on Broadway as a pianist and/or conductor on shows like Les Miz, Ragtime and Phantom of The Opera as well as two years as a comedy writer on The Rosie O’Donnell Show (three Emmy nominations with his co-writers) which led to him writing two opening numbers for the Tony Awards. As an actor, Rudetsky performed his show, Deconstructing Broadway in London, Boston (Irne award) and L.A. He co-wrote and co-starred in Disaster! on Broadway which was licensed by Music Theater International and is being performed around the country. With his husband James Wesley, Rudetsky co-produced the “What The World Needs Now Is Love” recording with Broadway Records featuring, among others, Idina Menzel, Audra MacDonald, and Lin-Manuel Miranda to help the victims and families of the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting.

Theaters Unite for I Wanna F@#king Tear You Apart March 2-April 2, 2023 Island City Stage Island City Stage is proud to present I Wanna F@#king Tear You Apart, a play about the nature of friendships in all its messed-up forms, with a special shout out to the kind of love that sometimes looks like rage.

National Queer Theater, which is in New York, and I met from that roundtable, and we stayed in touch. We thought this kind of connection should happen all the time.”

Playing March 2-April 2, 2023, this production will be co-produced by Atlanta, Georgia’s Out Front Theatre Company.

In January 2021, the pair founded the Queer Theater Alliance.

“The Dramatists Guild, the national organization that works with theaters, playwrights, etc., put together a roundtable discussion in June 2020 of artistic directors of queer theaters from across the country,” Out Front Theatre Company’s Founder and Producing Artistic Director Paul Conroy says. “The artistic director of

144 | OutClique.com

“That’s how we connected with Island City Stage,” Conroy explains. “My husband and I, along with some friends, would visit Wilton Manors once or twice a year, and we’ve been doing that since 2019. I connected with Andy Rogow, and we both really love this show. I said, you know, we’re close enough in proximity that it is feasible for us to do a co-production.”

I Wanna F@#king Tear You Apart will first be performed at Out Front Theatre Company, February 2-18, 2023. Written by Morgan Gould, the production follows best friends and roommates Samantha and Leo whose relationship comes into question after a new friend enters and upends their co-dependent world of mutual self-loathing and Grey’s Anatomy marathons. “The show will close in Atlanta on February 18, and on February 19, everything will be struck and put into a truck, ready to be transported,” Conroy says. “Of the three actors, the two lead characters will travel down to Wilton Manors and perform the show at Island City Stage. So, it’s a co-production, but at the same time, I’m calling it like a two-theater tour.” Atlanta-based actors Sofia Palmero and Matthew Busch will play Samantha and Leo, and according to the duo, they are ecstatic to be involved with this production. “I am so unbelievably pumped,” Palermo exclaims. “It's rare that I get to play a character that is actually written as fat, rather than just bringing my own fatness to a character. I also tend to play very sweet and unassuming characters, so it's nice to get to play someone who is neither of those things.” Busch adds, “To say I’m thrilled would be an understatement. I haven't been onstage in probably close to four or five years. Prior to COVID, I was flexing my directing muscles and directing productions in Atlanta for a while. It's exciting to re-work my acting muscles on stage with a script I fell in love with the instant I read it. I'm also a big fan of Out Front Theatre here in Atlanta; they serve a very specific purpose in both the theater community and the LGBTQIA+ community, and it feels like ‘coming home’ when I'm invited to play with the team again.” Additionally, Palermo, who was born in Venezuela, moved to Florida when she was six and lived in the

state until after graduating from college. She is looking forward to performing at Island City Stage, which she says is close to her hometown. “I’ve been looking forward to this collaboration for months, and I am so excited that it’s happening. There's a real focus on creating community and connecting LGBTQIA+ people across disciplines and now across state lines!” Busch agrees. “I wasn't familiar with Island City Stage prior to joining the production, but I love and will always support a theater with a mission to tell queer stories. It's an important niche of both the theater world and the LGBTQIA+ world. This will be my first time taking a show on the road, and I'm excited to see how it translates to two separate, but similar audiences.” According to Conroy, he hopes co-producing I Wanna F@#king Tear You Apart with Island City Stage is the beginning of more partnerships between queer theaters. “We all have such unique missions, but our individual missions are similar enough where there’s programming that we can all do,” he says. “I believe these partnerships or co-productions, whatever you want to call them, it’s a new way to expose new works and new authors to audiences, and really elevate them. Normally, if we’re licensing a show, we fill out an online application, we get the script, and there’s never any contact with the author. You send your check off, pay for the rights, produce the show, and move on once it’s done. This way, it feels wonderful because this is a new play from an up-andcoming author, and we’re giving her the chance for her show to be shown twice. We’re building momentum for her and the show. When people start doing this show more in the future, they’ll see that we were two of the first companies to produce it.”
