10 Years in the making In March 2017 local business woman Catherine Taylor celebrated her salon, Beauty HQ’s 10th birthday. Out & About caught up with her.

I’d like to dedicate the past 10 years to 2 special friends who in the early years helped guide me onto the right path. Yvonne Cable and Joan Brophy both who are no longer with us but I know they are always looking over my shoulder.

I really don’t know where the last 10 years have gone but working in a job that gives you satisfaction is an amazing feeling. I originally got into the business when I started helping out on reception at my friend Yvonne’s salon in Bishop Auckland through my own personal therapist, Joan.

It was there that I learnt how to deliver a high standard of quality and service. We all have to start off some where and this was a fantastic place to start.

After this I then worked

for few years in various salons and spas around the area building up my confidence and a rapor with the clients. After a year of working mobile I was offered the premises on Commercial Street, Crook where I have remained for the past 10 years.

My feet have never touched ground and it’s flown over. It’s all about hard work, determination and not being afraid to fly, it never becomes easy. It’s certainly not an easy industry. I don’t just sit and paint nails or rub feet there’s so much going on behind the scenes and the industry is constantly evolving.

Education is the key, how can you educate clients if your not educated in the subject that you have passion for.

I actually graft away constantly and when I’m away from the salon I’m at my desk looking for the next thing big thing. What can I bring to the salon, what can I educate my clients in. I don’t compare myself to others, I’m more interested in being better then the therapist I was yesterday.

I know my standards have been passed on to all staff and this year sees 2 very special members leaving, Kate who’s been with me 8 years is moving away and Lauren begins her maternity leave. I’ve developed a very strong loyal friendship with them both and I wish them both the best for their futures.

However I’m very excited to see what the next chapter will bring, but for now I think it’s cause for a celebration and I’d like to thank all clients old & new with an invite to celebrate the success of Beauty HQ at our birthday party.

A Lost Empire Story by Aaron Cowen

The small market town of Crook once boasted 3 cinemas. They were known locally simply as the Top, Middle or Bottom House Pictures.

The Top House was the Hippodrome, built circa 1923 and closed circa 1968. It was located at the top of Hope Street, just behind Robinsons Top Shop. The Middle House Pictures was the Theatre Royal, built in 1890, which began life as a Stage Theatre, before taking on The Top House moving pictures.

This was located behind Hope Street, opposite the Coach and Horses (Brewery Tap) pub in Addison Street.

Both of these buildings are now demolished.

The Middle House

Only the Bottom House Pictures, which was the Empire Electric Palace, still stands. Many are surprised at how much of the original cinema remains within the building. This cinema is today, Speedo Car Parts and Accessories owned by the Oswald brothers, in South Street. There is a group set up intending to bring this glorious building back to life as a Cinema and Theatre called the Save the Empire Group, which I am part of.

About 3 years ago a local man named Shaun Stoker posted photos of the interior of the building on one of the Photo by Shaun Stoker local facebook pages. It was joked that this building should be restored and so the Save the Empire Group was set up.

What we did not realise at the time is that this cinema is actually the oldest cinema North of Birmingham and the 4th oldest in the country. Now if that isn’t a potential tourist attraction in itself, then nothing is.

The building was designed by Pascal J. Stienlet and Henry Gibson. Stienlet went on to design more than 200 cinemas and surprisingly his architectural practice which was established in 1904 is still in existence and ran by his grandson Vincente Stienlet.

Pascal J. Stienlet This in turn makes it the oldest Architectural Practice in the North of England. The Empire’s builder was a William Shepherd from North Shields who made use of many local tradesmen during its construction.

In 1909 a Cinematograph Act was introduced meaning that appropriate fire escape was required from all cinemas and theatres.

Previously many cinemas were installed in buildings which did not comply with this.

Others had been shown at Fairgrounds and so purpose built cinemas began popping up here and there. Of course Crook was one of these purpose built cinemas. Construction began early in the August of 1910 on a site which had previously been cottages. The building went up with such rapidity that it was able to open its doors in after just 4 months on 21st November 1910 under the patronage of the Chairman and members of Crook Urban and District Council.

(And we wonder why with today’s technology, it has taken so long to build the new Lidl).

The building was said to be packed with an enthusiastic audience. It measured 70ft in length by 45ft in width and was apparently capable of holding 1000 people which in the event of a fire could be emptied in 3 minutes.

The picture screen was 20ft by 20ft, far smaller than today’s modern cinema screens which are on average around 40ft wide.

It is not known whether any films were actually shown on the opening night, but a week later on 27th November it was advertised that the following would be shown, A Rural Romeo, The Broken Symphony, Cowboy Chivalry, Sorrows of the Unfaithful, Glimpses of Bird Life, a Tour Through Indo-China, and a host of comic subjects. The Bijon Orchestra rendered selections each night.

Bradford was a professional musician there.

In 1916, Joseph Llewellyn Alker at the age of 14 played the piano at the Palace. He went on to play at the Hippodrome in Bishop Auckland and in 1927, went on to play at the Metropole, Dublin.

The cinema underwent changes in the 1950s with the introduction of wide screen. Heavier projection equipment was installed however cinemas were in decline with the introduction of TV. By 1968 it closed its doors to film showing, however it continued as a Bingo Hall and was, still ran by Essoldo who had been running all three cinemas in Crook. Bingo remained until around about 1978 and the building stood derelict for many years afterwards. It wasn’t until 1989 that the building found its current use as a car parts and accessory shop.

Our group believes that if ever a new owner was to take on the building, the internal features would be lost and the building itself may even face demolition. In 1911, we know that 18 year old Mary Thexton was working at the palace checking the picture.

33 year old Henry Tickell was there as a Professional Lecturer. The Summer of 96’ Story by Ritchie Coatsworth

The Summer of 1996 will always be for me one of the best Summers ever, when life was carefree and all that mattered was football.

It was the Summer of 1996 that I had finally passed through the education system and had just finished my exams at Wolsingham Comprehensive. I spent most of my new found freedom either playing or watching football.

That year my team, Newcastle United had just blown the Premier League title after leading the race in January by 12 points only to squander it by 4 points as the season came to ended to bitter rivals Manchester United (who would of thought that Newcastle were once serious rivals to Manchester United!?). The worst part of it was watching the infamous 4-3 loss to Liverpool with 2 friends one who supported Liverpool and one who supported Manchester United as my title dreams slipped away. Those long Summer days were spent between 3 football pitches, The Welfare at Stanley, The Rec at Sunniside then occasionally sneaking

the goalmouth. We spent many a time day dreaming of the day when the Welfare’s goalposts would be returned.

That Summer seemed to be all about football, as soon as the season ended the European Championships began, which were being held around England. All year there had been immense scrutiny on Alan Shearer as he had been on a huge baron run for England. It only took him 23 minutes of the opening match to find the net and then go on to become the tournaments top scorer with 5 goals. Again I was left disappointed after England succumbed to Germany on penalties in the semi-final (AGAIN) after a fantastically spirited performance with Gazza hitting the post in extra time.

During the day we would entertain ourselves by heading down to the Welfare to play various combinations of football, knock out, penalties, free kicks all using old road cones as the goal while we waited for the council to bring the posts back. I always remember that the Welfare was rock hard in the Summer then like diving into a lake the rest of the year without forgetting a little bit of solid ice in the Winter months.

Nothing stopped us playing.

Later that Summer Newcastle United signed Euro 96’s top scorer Alan Shearer for 15 million, surely Newcastle would become the new Manchester United now with Kevin Keegan at the helm and Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand and Faustino Asprilla leading the line?!...
