This month we speak to local historian and former hairdresser Michael Manuel, who has a new book coming out in time for Christmas.

Hi Michael, firstly tell us about how your interest in local history began.

My interest in local history started in 1988 when the playing records for the local football club were lost. You don’t realize how much time goes into a project like this, visiting the record office for scraps of information each time I went, but then you start to read stories of your town in old papers instead of what you really went for, it becomes an obsession.

In 1998 I was in Mrs Askwith’s house when she gave me a photo of the Elite Dance Band taken in 1935, I was thinking, “What’s this got to do with football” but walking home, it occurred to me. I’ve a tongue in my head, I go into lots of homes in the district, over 700 hundred in over 25 years as a mobile hairdresser, they all had photos to look at, it takes over your life.

Tell us a little about your new book and what it’s all about.

Since my interest in local history began I’ve 12

done three local books and two football books, one of which was with two friends.

The profits of these were put back into the community, local schools, local sports clubs and my favourite project, which I am very proud

of, if the money hadn’t been given we wouldn’t have lights on the trees on the market place (one colour at the time) and I wish someone would realign them, the trees have grown and the lights no longer look right.

I don’t consider myself an historian, I want to invent a new word for myself, “Nostalgian” I find pictures, others write stories, the academics say I don’t put enough written content into my books, tough, they miss the point they are picture books with small stories, which I find that put them on the path to write at length.

I used to get upset about the many changes to my town, especially building’s pulled down which were built in the 1970s, but you have to change with the times. Does that mean they’ll pull the civic down in ten years time ? I’ll be happy.

My new book “CROOK - from Industrious to

Residential” is of newly found pictures, long lost posters and adverts of long gone business ventures. The book celebrates as many local photographers past and present that I could find who had and have a camera on hand most of the time plus celebrities who have visited the area and showing how we have lost our industry to become more residential.

I always say after I’ve finished each venture there won’t be another.
