Spotlight on The Wear Valley Slimming World Group This month we shine the spotlight on The Wear Valley Slimming World Group. Consultant Christine Rumbold answers our questions.

Hi Christine, tell us a little bit about your Slimming World Groups. How did you start?

Four years ago after several attempts I finally built up the courage to walk into a Slimming World group with my husband. We both had health issues and needed to jointly loose over six stone.

With Slimming World’s unique healthy eating plan of delicious food which is suitable for the whole family, never feeling hungry and the fantastic group support, we lost over six stone and our health and futures dramatically changed.

With a new future ahead of me I decided I wanted to be able to share this knowledge to help others and successfully trained as a consultant to run the Crook groups, part of the Weardale groups along with Barbara at Wolsingham and our newest consultant, Lynn at Willington.

How has Covid 19 affected what you do?

Lockdown has obviously had a financial impact on all our self-employed consultants, as understandably members unfortunately had many other issues to focus on away from group. We had to close our doors to comply with government legislation. But Slimming World knowing the importance of what a healthy eating plan and managing our weight played in this pandemic worked around the clock to develop training for us and IT updates on our systems.

Within two weeks we were delivering group support via a virtual venue, online support, delivered cookery demonstrations, daily exercise routines and an improved phone app with a barcode scanner to give instant food information.

The new technology was a challenge for some of us, along with some of our members. Those members who did join this new journey with us were rewarded.

We did see some success stories during lockdown.

At the start of lockdown I had the honour of taking over the Crook morning group, one would think building relationships and a new social team would be hard in these times, well the magic of group support shone and one of the new team was Sandra Taylor who embraced virtual technology managing her 4 1/2 stone loss to be at her target weight.

Chris Shuttleworth from the Wolsingham group also embraced the new technology along with Barbara to continue her journey currently at over a 5 1/2 stone loss.

Whilst in the Willington group Lynn Anderson not only reached target as a member, but went on to successfully become the newest consultant in the Weardale area to run the Willington Saturday morning group. A very warm welcome Lynn.

All of us in the Weardale groups are offering support for all our members, with pre-booked weigh only slots in venue, manual weigh for those shielding. Whilst we are in tier 3 our group support is in a virtual venue, along with all of the fantastic online support and each one of us at the end of a phone.

It has never been more important to follow a healthy lifestyle and manage our weight. We look forward to welcoming returning and new members to our safe covid compliant groups in 2021.
