WELCOME June 21 officially marked the start of summer — and the longest day of the year.

It also happened to be the hottest June day on record for 41 years, with temperatures topping 34°C. While we may have been wilting as the mercury levels rose, spare a thought for your garden, the plants and flowers and the rich biodiversity they support.

Lush green lawns and borders packed with colourful blooms were also feeling the heat and in dire need of a drink.

Canny gardeners may have had a trick or two up their sleeves to ensure the longevity of their plants, but if we are lucky enough to have a dry summer ahead then water saving tips and advice on choosing plants that favour hot conditions may be essential.

You can pick up gardening advice and much more at Carshalton Environmental Fair over the August bank holiday.

A fun-filled family day out, the eco-festival also showcases local crafts and produce and has plenty of practical ideas that can be implemented day to day to help save energy and reduce waste.

In this edition we also chat to the organisers of Music in Nork Park, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

When putting your affairs in order, we think about making a Will which deals with matters after we have gone but often overlook the help you might need in lifetime, i.e. through a power of attorney.

There are different sorts of powers of attorney – general powers are usually for the short term (if you are working abroad say) but are only valid if you have mental capacity.

For a more long term solution a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is the answer. Prior to October 2007, they were called Enduring Powers of Attorney. Those created are still in effect, although an LPA can be more comprehensive.

The benefit of an LPA is that you are appointing someone you choose and trust to manage your affairs in your lifetime should you not be able to yourself. This might be because you have lost mental capacity (you have dementia, say) or physical capacity either to get out or sign your name (you have had a stroke, say). It does sound a bit doom and gloom but without an LPA, then your family member will have to apply to the Court of Protection for authority to act, this can take 4-6 months and most importantly you have no control over who makes that application.

There are two types of LPAs – one to cover property and finance decisions and one to cover health and welfare decisions.

You can set out in the LPA whether you want one or more attorneys, have some substitutes and also decide how your attorneys will make decisions for you and when.

SCENT Voted one of the UK’s top 10 landscapes to visit, Mayfield Lavender Farm is once again in bloom and open to the public.

Owner Brendan Maye talks to out&about

It’s a breathtaking sight seeing Mayfield Lavender Farm in its full glory. Swathes of vivid purple lavender stretch as far as the eye can see.

But, while the site in Banstead was traditionally used to grow lavender in the 18th and 19th century, until over a decade ago it had not been used for that purpose.

Then Brendan Maye, a former managing director of the fine fragrance division of Wella UK, came up with

the idea to grow lavender as part of a plan to revive the fortunes of the Yardley brand.

With sales declining, he believed consumers needed to witness the beauty of lavender to accept it as a relevant fragrance for today so he suggested buying a lavender farm.

His idea was shot down three years in a row but finally Brendan got the goahead, although he was stopped from buying a farm.

Instead he commissioned environmental charity Bioregional Development Group to help get the lavender planted in 2002. The land was leased from Sutton Council, with Brendan standing as guarantor, and Yardley sponsored the planting.

In 2005, Yardley was sold and the new owners decided not to continue with the sponsorship. As the project stood on the brink of collapse, Brendan bought the 25-acre organic farm.

With his wife Lorna stepping in to run the farm, Brendan later quit his job and is now involved day-to-day, working at the farm and 12-acre nursery in Epsom, which he bought in 2010 after cashing in his pension.

“Every year we learn something new,” he said with a laugh. “It’s been a very steep learning curve but it’s been great.

“The work is more physical, but there’s also more control. It makes it less stressful from that perspective alone.

From June 1 until mid-September, when the farm is open, it’s a 24-hour-aday job for three months.”

Brendan said: “We’re not surprised at the way people have taken to it as we

MAYFIELD LAVENDER have worked very hard to encapsulate that experience. What is gratifying is that people like it for the right reasons.

It gives us some confidence that we can continue to pursue some ideas.”

These have included the alfresco tea shop and gift shop selling a variety of unique lavender products and plants.

New this year is a revamped food menu and a range of afternoon tea packages, which come with a sparkling wine option. Alternatively, you could purchase a picnic lunch or all-day breakfast to enjoy in the idyllic surroundings.

Mayfield’s annual photographic competition is under way and this year they are looking for stunning images of the lavender, but also quirky and creative photos of the farm and its products.

MUSIC IN NORK PARK

LET THE MUSIC PLAY Community festival returns for 25th year

Entry is free, although donations are welcome, with the aim to raise sufficient money to stage the event the following year and contribute any surplus funds to projects within Nork Park and supporting local charities.

A musical trip through the decades is promised at this year’s Music in Nork Park.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the community festival, the organisers have put together a programme featuring old favourites and some new acts who will lead the crowds on a journey from the 60s through to today.

Organiser Zoe Hunnisett said: “This year we wanted to try and have music through the ages. We have singer Colin Roy, who does 60s and 70s music. We have a new 80s band coming this year, Pop Rockin’ 80s, and the Ultra 90s return.

“It has always been quite a local event but it seems to have grown a bit further afield.” Indeed some people travel from as far as the south coast to see Colin Roy perform.

“It’s quite relaxed,” added Zoe, “you can come along with a picnic and enjoy the music. You can be five or 85 and you will know something, we try and cover the whole breadth of music.”

The Marching Band of the Redhill Corps of Drums will open proceedings on Sunday, July 16 — marching along Nork Way before arriving at the park at midday.

The one-day Music in Nork Park festival is organised by a dedicated committee made up of local residents.

The committee is keen to attract new members and is looking for volunteers to help organise the annual event.

There will also be performances by the popular Surrey Show Choir and singer Christie Prentise as well as swing boats, bouncy castles and children’s entertainment, including football skills sessions.

HEADACHES: A PAIN IN THE NECK?

Headaches are so common that almost everyone takes the odd one now and then for granted. Many people accept headaches as a normal part of life. Headaches, however, are a sign that something is wrong. We know that stress, toxic fumes, some foods and alcohol can cause headaches.

MEN OF THE WRYTHE Roger Mills looks ahead to a day of commemorative events, including the unveiling of a new memorial, dedicated to the men who gave their lives serving in World War One shops, one public house and two beer houses and cows grazed in the fields where the petrol station now stands.”

Some of the men were related; fathers and sons, brothers and cousins all answered the call to arms. A number also played football together in the local football club, now Carshalton Athletic.

During the war Fred Bird, landlord of The Cricketers in The Wrythe, put up a board on the pub wall, listing the names of the men who had gone to fight.

Sutton Voice is all about reflecting and reinforcing the fantastic work that is done by volunteers across the borough.

The glue which holds our community together.

One such event is taking place this month and it epitomises all that is

amazing about the work of others to ensure there is not only a community, but we acknowledge and, in this case, honour its "backstory".

One of the largest community events to be staged in the borough this year will take place in the Wrythe area of Carshalton on Saturday, July 15. It marks the unveiling of a new memorial to commemorate the local men that sacrificed their lives in The Great War. Everyone is invited to attend a unique remembrance event to honour the ‘Men of the Wrythe’.

“This will be a fitting tribute to the 245 soldiers that signed up to serve in WW1 from just four streets on the Wrythe: St Andrew’s Road, St James Road, St John’s Road and William Street,” said chairman of Wrythe Memorial Events, Dick Bower. “In those days, the Wrythe was an ‘outlying portion’ of Carshalton village with 195 tiny cottages, occupied by very large and poor working families. They had no running water and had to use a communal pump. There were five small

Many did not return and 45 of those who died are remembered on the Willie Bird cross, named after Fred Bird’s adopted son. It was originally situated at St Andrew's Mission Church in Wrythe Lane. When the site was demolished in 1964, the cross was moved to All Saints churchyard, where it remains today.

A new cross will be unveiled on The Wrythe at a public ceremony at 11am on July 15, thanks to the initiative and commitment of the St Helier, The Wrythe and Wandle Valley Local Committee. The official ceremony will be attended by members of the Royal British Legion, Chelsea Pensioners, Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Jean Crossby, council officers and pupils from Hackbridge Primary School.

“The event has been arranged by members of your local community. We should like to thank all the performers and stallholders for their support. We want to pay tribute to the men whose names appear on the cross. Please help us to honour their memory and make this a day to remember,” Dick added.

Refreshments will be on sale. A special attraction is a vintage beer, brewed for The Hope according to a genuine 1914 recipe from Page and Overton, the brewery that supplied The Cricketers, the pub that used to stand on The Wrythe.

At Carshalton Athletic Football Club, there is a tea dance in The Robins’ Nest from 12-3pm, followed at 3pm by a retro-style football match between a Carshalton Athletic Youth Team and a team from Carshalton High School for Boys.

Premiere of play At Carshalton High School for Girls you can see the world première of The Roughs of the Wrythe, a new play by Ann Pattison (chairman of Sutton Writers), based on research carried out at the Circle Library and directed by Dick Bower (President of Sutton Amateur Dramatic Club).

The Roughs of The Wrythe is the story of the impact of World War One on the working class community in Carshalton, how they came through it and how the lads

called “the roughs” became the heroes of the Wrythe.

Although a fictional account, the play is about the people of The Wrythe, all of the characters lived in the area 100 years ago.

Carshalton’s eco festival showcases local talent and sustainability

Sutton’s biggest environmental event returns this August bank holiday with a packed lineup of live music and activities.

Carshalton Environmental Fair is a long-established event dating back to 1990. Organised by Carshalton charity EcoLocal, it aims to show people how they can cut their environmental footprint and adopt sustainable practices while also being a great family day out.

Its green credentials don’t stop there though. As part of its commitment to make the fair as energy neutral as possible the stages are powered by renewable energy, with the main stage being solar powered. A free bus service also operates across Sutton on the day taking visitors to and from the fair, or come by bike and bring a lock for the cycle parking area where Dr Bike will check your bike over — for free.

Visitors can browse the 150-plus stalls selling artisan crafts, take part in

interactive demonstrations, try yoga or relax with a massage, as well as find out more about local sustainable initiatives.

There will also be plenty of activities to keep the kids amused ranging from a cycle obstacle course, circus skills, crafts, games and facepainting.

There will be three stages of live music showcasing the best local talent throughout the day. From rock and pop on the main stage to acoustic folk, blues, country and more at the Music

ROCK AND ROLL The Yardbirds to headline Boom Boom Club’s 15th anniversary gig Sometimes, just sometimes, there is a band that paves the way for all who follow.

The Yardbirds are just that band. Having introduced the world to the talents of guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, the legendary five-piece also played a part in laying the groundwork for rock music with their wild jams and improvisatory feel.

Formed in 1963, the band enjoyed a run of chart hits, including For Your Love, Heart Full of Soul, and Over Under Sideways Down.

Now, fresh from recording their latest live album, Making Tracks, in the United States, they are once again touring.

The new line-up for 2017, featuring original founder member Jim McCarthy and John Idan, will be headlining the Boom Boom Club’s 15th anniversary gig this August.

SUMMER NIGHTS Start the weekend early with an evening of racing and live music Thursday is the new Friday, isn’t it? So why not kickstart your weekend with an evening of thrilling racing followed by live music at Epsom Downs racecourse.

Summer Nights are back for four Thursdays in July and August, with a star line-up including Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills and 80s pop icons Culture Club.

The event opens on July 6 with a night of classic covers from the 60s all the way through to the Noughties. On July 13, Scott Mills will be on stage for an epic DJ set and a week later Culture Club will be at Epsom – one of a handful of UK dates they will be playing this year.

The season wraps up with an evening of contemporary jazz and cocktails on August 3.

In fact, research indicates that preschool children are more receptive to picking up and learning foreign languages, says Sarah Lester, who runs weekly classes in Cheam.

“Research suggests that by the age of three if children are starting to learn a language they just retain so much more, they absorb it.

“We learn through a lot of games, songs, a lot of movement and repetition. It’s very interactive.

“The whole idea of Lingotot is that children learn words that are really useful in day-to-day life so we have booklets so parents can reinforce the lesson throughout the week.”

“They have no inhibitions, they just go for it.” As a result, Sarah says their pronunciation is better, as younger children will tend to mimic what they hear.

Part of the 45-minute lesson is dedicated to a craft activity based on the theme of that week’s class. The activity is instructed in the language and the children get to take home their work to remind them of what they have learned.

“The children amaze me with how quickly they pick up the language and how much they are learning.”

A former head of department and French and German teacher at secondary level, Sarah firmly believes that 11 is too old to start learning a language.

Sarah set up her Lingotot franchise a little over a year ago and juggles classes around caring for her two children, aged four and two.

She runs French classes on Thursdays, suitable for toddlers and pre-school children, and French and German afterschool classes on Fridays in Cheam, as well as working at a local primary school for a day-and-a-half a week.

GOLDEN DAYS Nostalgic trip through the decades as charity marks 70th anniversary There will be a hint of nostalgia in the air as an Epsom charity marks a major milestone in its history.

To mark its 70th birthday Age Concern Epsom & Ewell is organising a good old-fashioned knees-up.

The charity has secured lottery funding to stage the festival on July 2 and is also being supported by a number of Epsom businesses.

The Golden Days Festival will celebrate music through the decades from 1940s big bands to 60s jazz, disco and pop.

Featured acts include The Cadettes vintage vocal trio and Surrey Jazz, a brass quintet who are set to perform a 60s inspired set.

Surrey Jive, quarter finalists of the Sky dance competition Got to Dance, will be showing off their flicks and kicks with a fast and furious 1950s rock ’n’ roll jive.

And comedian Rachel Sambrooks will bring her show, Stand by your Nan, to the storytelling tent.

Nonsuch Park will provide the backdrop for the festival, which will feature vintage cars and buses, including a chance to hail a ride on an original 1960s green double decker bus, a dog show, games, cream teas, food and craft stalls, with

There will also be a chance to win a family hamper. Bring four generations of family to the festival and have your photo taken to be entered into a prize draw.

We are now close to 60 working days into the new world of the Apprenticeship Levy with all of its reforms now firmly upon the business community! Carshalton College has an integral role to play in shaping skills development, employment and training for your business’s current and future workforce — it is clear that the levy will encourage your business as a non-levy or levy paying category to consider how you may increase apprenticeship intake and or embed the programme as part of your organisation’s succession planning strategy.

The changes follows the Government policy ‘The Future of Apprenticeships

in England: 2020 vision’ which sets out new procedures to put employers in the driving seat, increase the quality of Apprenticeships, simplify the system and give employers purchasing power.

As an active member of the Sutton business community and a board member of the Sutton Chamber of Commerce, it is very much our duty to support the Borough’s economic well-being. As well as being beautiful, mosaics are very practical. Depending on the material, they can be easily applied to flat and curved surfaces. They can be used for walls in bathrooms, wetrooms, kitchens — and some are suitable for floors too!!

Mosaics have been used to decorate buildings for thousands of years and the Greeks and Romans made them into an art form, creating highly intricate images from tiny pieces of stone (tesserae), mainly for their floors. Mosaics are still an incredibly popular way of covering walls and floors today in homes, commercial buildings and for swimming pools too.

The format hasn’t changed much over the centuries either, although modern mosaics are now very easy and quick to apply. Mosaics are probably the most versatile of all tiling formats: small pieces of glass, stone, shell, ceramic, porcelain and metal are all held together on the reverse side, usually by a mesh backing.

Mosaic sheets can be fixed in the same way as ceramic or porcelain tiles with adhesive and grout. Please speak to one of our team regarding fixing.
