As we move into the enchanting embrace of spring here in Surrey, there’s a delightful sense of anticipation in the air. The gentle warmth of the sun casts its golden glow upon our picturesque landscapes, painting a scene of renewal and promise. With Easter on the horizon, the season takes on an extra layer of significance, heralding both the awakening of nature and the celebration of cherished traditions.

BANSTEAD May Fayre

Returning on May 4th from 9am until 4pm on Banstead High Street

The Banstead May Fayre is being held on the 4th May 2024. Witness the crowning of Miss Stormie Tynan-Clark as the May Queen! Commercial and May Fayre stalls will be set up in the Orchard of All Saints Church, Banstead, along with a fun ‘Kidzone’ in the Institute building, opening at 9am and closing at 4pm.

With entertainment for the entire family, you can relish lunch or a snack at one of the food vendor stands and explore the

various stalls. The Parade boasts approximately 55 participating groups, including the Redhill Corps of Drums and the Royal British Legion Marching Band (Surbiton). The Classic Cars, which have been a tremendous success since joining us in 2022, will make a return. The Parade kicks off at 11.30am and concludes at All Saints Church around 12noon.

The Mayor will be in attendance to deliver a speech, and the May Queen will be crowned thereafter.

Following the crowning, the entertainment will commence and continue until around 4pm, featuring Maypole Dancing and Country Dancing.

The overarching theme for the entire event this year is helicopters, as it will be supporting Kent, Surrey, Sussex Air Ambulance.

All profits from the day will be donated to Kent, Surrey, Sussex Air Ambulance. A day not to be missed!

GATTON PARK

Join the Easter Egg Hunt at Gatton Park, Reigate from March 29th - April 1st, 10.30am-4pm.

Complete the fun trail and solve clues to earn your Easter treat!

Topical activities and refreshments are available to purchase on the day. Gatton Park is a beautiful historic parkland near Reigate with Edwardian gardens and located in the Surrey Hills National Landscape. The Easter Egg Hunt is the perfect activity for young children and families.

POLESDEN LACEY

From 23rd March until 21st April help Grizwald the Griffin cook up an Easter Feast as you adventure through the grounds of Polesden Lacey. Spring has sprung and Grizwald the Griffin has come to life. Grizwald is cooking up an Easter feast, but he’s never made one before, so he’ll need your help! Follow the interactive trail around the grounds, where there will be plenty of fun activities for all of the family. Once you help Grizwald prepare for an Easter feast, this friendly Griffin may even say thank you and reward you with an Easter treat.

The trail costs £3 per participating child and normal admission fees still apply for non-members. Don’t worry, they have Easter eggs for all dietary requirements. You can choose from either a chocolate egg or a vegan and Free From chocolate egg. Both eggs are made using Rainforest Alliance Certified cocoa. www.nationaltrust.org.uk

This Easter, Hobbledown Epsom – the fantastical adventure park, zoo and indoor play – will be hosting Egg-stra special Easter holiday fun from the 29th March to 14th April 2024.

Whilst big on scale and fun, the new Play Barn at Godstone Farm has also been designed to pay homage to its unique farm setting – bringing many elements of the outside, inside. Colours, textures and patterns reflect the Surrey Hills, within which the 40 year old farm is located. The bespoke design was manufactured and installed by the UK’s leading

manufacturer of soft play structures and as a result, it features an infinite number of routes, obstacles and climbing experiences to help kids stay active. There has also been a lot of attention given to ensuring children and parents are well taken care of. There is a separate baby area and separate toddler area for smaller ones, and a new café serving fresh hot and cold drinks and meals. Reigate mum, Claire Hutton is new author of children’s book Dinosaurs had impeccable manners.

“I grew up in Ewell in Surrey, and moved to Reigate in 2007. I have worked as cabin crew for over 18 years now; previously based in Dublin, but I now work out of London Gatwick.

I have two boys who are 5 and 3 who have really been my inspiration for writing. Dinosaurs had impeccable manners was

born out of trying to teach table manners to my eldest, who wasn’t massively interested-until I told him that dinosaurs used to eat with good manners. Anyone who has ever sat to enjoy a meal at a table with small children will know it can be a little noisy and messy to say the least! This is a playful take on teaching good table manners. The story is no miracle worker, we still have food on the walls, but it was great fun playing out with these ideas with my boys.”

“Incredible” St Raphael’s

Hospice manager

in running for national award

A manager from St Raphael’s Hospice in Cheam is in the running for a prestigious national award. Paula di Palma, who stepped up to lead the housekeeping team when Covid struck, is a finalist in the 2024 Our Health Heroes Awards, delivered by Skills for Health.

Colleagues from the much-loved hospice, which provides vital end of life care for people living in Merton and Sutton, nominated Paula for going the extra mile for patients and volunteers and always making them feel special.

“She knows every patient, family member, volunteer and colleague on first name terms,” says St Raphael’s CEO Nick Stevens. “She treats everyone the same, always with a smile and a genuine interest in who they are.”

“Paula is an incredible person. She creates special occasions for our patients and those important to them to meet their specific needs often at short notice. I feel privileged to be her colleague,” adds Ginny Toubal, Volunteer Services Lead.

Magnolia or Sage Green?

Tadworth Art Group Exhibition, Friday 17th - Sunday 19th May

When someone says, ‘I’ve been painting today’ we naturally presume that means two coats of matt emulsion on the kitchen walls and reply, ‘Magnolia or Sage Green?’

This can also be followed by, ‘Crown or Dulux?’ but when we discover that ‘particular someone’ has actually been painting a watercolour landscape, we normally follow that with, ‘Oh, well done, I can’t paint to save my life’. And, as most of us believe that an artist is born with a God-given talent, we don’t even give a second thought to how we could emulate this unattainable skill.

But wrong, painting techniques can be learned like any subject and with a good amount of dedication and lots, and lots of practise, all of us can become artists and produce excellent paintings.

At Tadworth Art Group, many of their wonderful artists will happily tell you that they started from humble beginnings and eventually built up their

skill set to an enviable level. Indeed, such are the high standards set by the group that membership is strictly controlled and only the best applicants make it into that select band.

The benefit of this, of course, is that when a TAG exhibition comes around you can bet your Picasso that you will be treated to a sumptuous display of the finest art around.

So, there you have it, definitely one art exhibition not to be missed, and, as you can see from some of the examples shown here, you are in for a treat.

Epsom and Ewell history talk on WW2

Wednesday 3rd April, 1.00am to 11.30pm

Learn how the Borough suffered heavily in World War 2 and from 1940 to 1944, 890 alerts were sounded, 384 people were injured by enemy action and 33 killed. There were more than 200 incidents with 12,234 houses slightly damaged, 413 devastated and 192 destroyed, while thousands of incendiary and anti-personnel bombs were dropped with 440 high explosives, 64 oil and 30 flying bombs falling on the Borough.

Thursday 4th April 10am to 12pm and 10th April, 1pm to 3pm

Peel back time and discover Ewell’s hidden past and unseen history with a guided walk around the village. A settlement since pre-historic times, Ewell has a rich history concealed beneath the modern village. Visit Bourne Hall’s sacred lake where Bronze, Iron Age and Roman folk made offerings to ancient gods. Tread in the footsteps of the Romans on Stane Street and hear about their sacred shafts. Discover the village’s Saxon cemetery and its lost church. Relive the terror of exploding gunpowder mills and hear the area’s connections with Saxon Kings, Queen Elizabeth I and William IV. Meet at the entrance to Bourne Hall

Roman Ewell History talk

Thursday 11th April, 2pm to 3.30pm

Discover what life was like in Roman Ewell. Discover how people learnt to live with Roman power as a small native village became a busy roadside town. Learn how the building of a road brought a new world of ideas, food, pottery, trade, and strangers to the area and gave locals a chance to see the world. Learn something of their beliefs.

Hear tales of the Roman underworld, sacred springs and sacrifices sealing deep sacred shafts full of gifts to the gods. Learn about what was uncovered during a recent dig, even more strange than earlier discoveries!

Mini Egg Cookies

INGREDIENTS

• 125g unsalted butter

• 100g light brown soft sugar

• 75g white granulated sugar

• 1 egg

• 1 tsp vanilla

• 300g plain flour

• 1.5 tsp baking powder

• 0.5 tsp bicarbonate of soda

• 0.5 tsp sea salt

• 100g chocolate chips

• 200-300g Mini Eggs

METHOD

1. Add the unsalted butter, light brown sugar and white granulated sugar to a bowl and beat until creamy.

2. Add in the egg and vanilla, and beat again.

3. Add the plain flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, and salt and beat together.

4. Add in the chocolate chips and mini eggs and mix.

5. Weigh the cookies out into eight cookie dough balls - they’re about 115g each.

6. Chill the dough for 60 minutes in the fridge, or 30 minutes in the freezer.

7. Preheat the oven to 200ºc/180ºc fan.

8. Place them on lined trays with space to spread.

9. Bake the cookies in the oven for 12-14 minutes.

10. Once baked, leave them to cool on the tray for at least 30 minutes and eat!

Taking place on Saturday 11th May 2024

A celebration of all that is great about the county, Surrey Day is set to return for a sixth year to bring the area’s towns, villages and attractions together in recognition of this fantastic location on 11th May.

The theme for 2024 is ‘Surrey From The Sky’. From flights to feathers and space exploration, they will be taking a fresh look at our county, gazing down on its glorious landscape, raising our eyes to the skies – and exploring everything from the Surrey Air Ambulance to Birdworld in Farnham, as well as visiting some of our great vantage points such as Leith Hill.

The free community initiative, which is spearheaded by Visit Surrey, the county’s official tourist board, alongside partners BBC Surrey and Surrey

Lieutenancy, is a much-anticipated celebration which sees people of all ages come together to enjoy a range of special events, activities and VIP visits. As always, Surrey Day is open to everyone. Event organisers are urged to get creative, and the Visit Surrey website includes lots of ideas of ways to get involved.

Visit Surrey Chair Christine Howard has this message: “Surrey Day is a huge, inclusive initiative to which everyone is invited - it just gets bigger and better every year. Surrey Hills Hike 2024 - 17th March

Fasten your walking boots and join in a familyfriendly ramble through a section of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

You can opt for a 5-mile or 10-mile route, whichever suits you best. Additionally, they’ve recently introduced a ‘1K Your Way!’ path, which is entirely accessible and suitable for both buggies and wheelchairs.

The Surrey Hills Hike presents a wonderful chance to venture into the open countryside with friends and family, and make new acquaintances along the journey. It’s family-friendly and welcomes dogs too!

Entry Fee: £10 (plus any additional sponsorship you raise). Registration from 9:30am.

The hike starts and finishes at The Children’s Trust, Tadworth. All proceeds will help raise vital funds for children with brain injury.

Banstead Prep Pre-school

Our youngest children fully embrace the freedom of independent learning through play within the structure of the school day.

Pre-school learning takes place in classrooms equipped specifically for early education and following our future focussed curriculum, developed in partnership with Kingston University and designed to spark curiosity, support child led learning and develop future skills.

Each class is led by a qualified Early Years teacher and supported by a learning assistant providing bespoke support, stretch and challenge for each individual learner. The children also benefit from the full range of subject specialist teaching and

facilities for which Banstead Prep is renowned, and the core timetable includes PE, Music, Languages, STEM and Outdoor Learning.

Our main entry point is into the preschool for children who are three years old at the beginning of the academic year. Places are available for up to two classes of up to 16 children in the preschool, with a small number of accelerated entry places available at for children to join the Nursery class at the beginning of the term after they turn 2 years old.

Children are well prepared for their next educational challenge, ready for Reception and the exciting prep school education beyond.
