PRE-VETERINARY/ PRE-PROFESSIONAL

MUSCLE FOODS

EQUINE SCIENCE

This option—for those interested in meat production, value-added processing, food safety, quality assurance and new-product development—focuses on the humane and efficient production of safe, high-quality protein food products.

Courses concentrate on the management, biomechanics, training, nutrition and marketing of horses used for both equine performance and recreation.

ANIMAL SCIENCES MINOR

GRADUATE STUDIES

Students in this option typically want to work in the broad life-sciences industries with a focus on livestock, from breeding and production to processing and marketing.

Students majoring in other disciplines, such as business and biological sciences, can gain a basic understanding of animal sciences with a minor in our program.

Our graduate programs include master of agriculture, master of science and doctoral degrees in animal sciences.

With extra emphasis in the biological and physical sciences, this program prepares students to successfully pursue advanced degrees in veterinary medicine, other professional fields or graduate school.

AS VETERINARIANS

1998 alumna Robyn Wilborn received a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Auburn in 2002 and worked in a private animal practice in Kansas for three years before joining the Auburn College of Veterinary Medicine faculty in 2005. She specializes in animal reproductive systems.

AS INDUSTRY REPRESENTATIVES For decades, Billy Powell, ’66 and ’70, has served as executive vice president of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, which represents cattle producers statewide. He also is editor of Alabama Cattleman magazine and executive director of the Southeastern Livestock Exposition.

AS ATTORNEYS

When Katie Willoughby, ’12, receives her juris doctorate degree from Cumberland School of Law in 2015, she intends to pursue an advanced degree in agricultural and food law and begin a career representing farmers and others on agriculture-related legal issues.

AS MANAGERS John Starnes, ’11 and ’13, and wife Randa Owen Starnes, ’10 and ’12, both grew up in the cattle business and now manage a highly successful purebred Angus and Hereford operation in north Alabama.

AS A COACH OF CHAMPIONS Modesty may tempt him to deny it, but Greg Williams,’86, is why Auburn University’s varsity equestrian team has brought home three national championship trophies since its inception in 2002—and why Auburn even has an NCAA-sanctioned equestrian team at all.

After working as a professional horse trainer and riding coach for a few years after graduating, Williams returned to Auburn to manage the university’s Horse Center. His first move was to organize a competitive equestrian team that, in 1996, became a university-sanctioned club sport. Six years later, equestrian was raised from club sport to varsity sport status at Auburn, with Williams as head coach. The team has won the National Collegiate Equestrian Association championship in ’06, ’11 and ’13.

We’re a hands-on kind of place.

INTERNSHIPS Landing an internship—with a major corporation, a farming operation, or a public-service agency, for instance—allows you to earn college credit while gaining real-world experience and making connections within the industry. Internships often lead to full-time job offers for new graduates, too.

STUDY TOURS You can broaden your perspective on the industry and the world by participating in any of the study tours we offer across the U.S. and abroad, from feedlots in the Midwest to livestock farms in Europe.

This academic year alone, animal sciences faculty members are planning study abroad travels to Ireland, Spain and China.

COMPETITIONS From judging livestock and meat cuts to vying for the title of best new food product, animal sciences majors have opportunities to compete against fellow Auburn students and teams from universities nationwide. In addition to gaining valuable experience, being part of a competitive team can help students build their decision-making, critical-thinking, teamwork and communication skills and gain self-confidence.

U N D E R G R A D U AT E R E S E A R C H Auburn animal sciences majors can choose to participate in scientific research projects that focus on finding sustainable solutions to existing issues in the livestock industry. As an undergraduate researcher, you could have the opportunity to travel to a national or international professional meeting to present your findings.

COLLEGIATE CATTLEMEN AND CATTLEWOMEN

AUBURN UNIVERSITY HORSEMAN’S CLUB

Our Collegiate Cattlemen and Cattlewomen chapter has made a name for itself as a top-notch catering business.

With menu options that range from plated prime rib dinners to whole-hog barbecues, catering activities give members experience in meat processing, food safety, event planning, budgeting and teamwork. Proceeds are used to help fund scholarships as well as club members’ travel to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s annual meeting.

You don’t even have to own a horse to join the Auburn University Horseman’s Club. All you have to have is enthusiasm for horses and horse-related activities. Members get advice from equine industry professionals, gain experience in horse care and handling and support worthwhile causes. The “Saddle Up for St. Jude Trail Ride,” for instance, raises thousands of dollars each year for pediatric cancer research.

BLOCK AND BRIDLE CLUB

AUBURN PRE-VET CLUB

With a focus on helping students develop skills needed in the professional world of animal agriculture, Auburn’s Block and Bridle Club offers opportunities to network with and learn from leaders in the industry. Members also hone their skills in the annual Little International Livestock Showmanship Competition and attend Block and Bridle’s national convention each year.

Auburn’s Pre-Veterinary Medical Association, more commonly known as the Pre-Vet Club, helps familiarize students who are interested in becoming veterinarians with expectations the vet-school experience will bring and with the professional standards for the industry.

We believe in investing in your life’s work through scholarships.

SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AUSOM. AND THEY’RE AVAILABLE. • Generous financial gifts and commitments from our dedicated alumni and supporters allow the College of Agriculture at Auburn to award its students more than $640,000 in scholarships every year.

• Many freshman and general scholarships also are available through Auburn’s Office of University Scholarships.

• All current and accepted incoming Auburn students can apply for university, college and departmental scholarships at www.auburn.edu/AUSOM. All application deadlines are final.

• Reviewers consider each applicant’s grades and standardized test scores as well as campus/community involvement and leadership in making awards.
