InJesuswehavethemodelofthetrueshepherd.Inhimis fulfilledtheexpectationoftheGoodShepherdpromisedby God:the“GreatShepherd”greaterthanMoses (Heb13:20). •John10:1-6:Thegateofthesheepfold.InJn10:1-10itis saidthatJesusisthe“gate”togettothesheepandtobeledto thepastures (10:7.9-10).
ThethemeofthesheephadalreadybeenintroducedinJohn 2:15andinaparticularwayin5:2whereitisindicatedthat thereisaSheepPoolwithfiveporticosalongwhichwerelaid thesicktobehealed.Inthislastcontextthesheepindicatethe peoplewhowereoppressedbytheirdirectors.InJn10:1,Jesus linksthethemeofthesheeptotheatriumorinnercourtyardof theTemple,theJewishinstitutionadministeredbymenof powerwhotrampledontherights,justiceandexploitedthe people.SuchindividualswerecalledbyJesus“thievesand bandits”.
JesusbeginshislongpresentationbeforethePharisees,who wereclosedupintheirunbeliefandinsufficiency (9:40-41) witha generalaffirmation:amoresurewaytoenterintocontactwith thesheepisthatofenteringbythegateoftheenclosurein whichtheyarekept.Anyonewhoentersinadifferentwayisnot animatedbyareasonofloveforthesheep,butinorderto exploitthemforhisowninterest.Thisisthesinofthosewho directthepeople:totakeholdofeverythingthatbelongstoall forthemselves.Jesuscallsthisattitudeusingtheterm“thief”. ThiswaspreciselytheaccusationthatJesusaddressedtothe chiefpriestsofthepeopleduringhisfirstvisittotheTemple. AnothertermthatJesususestoindicatethosewhotakeaway fromthepeoplewhatbelongstothemis:“bandit”.Suchaterm indicatesthosewhouseviolence.Therefore,thechiefpriestsof theTempleobligethepeopletosubmitthemselvestothe violenceoftheirsystem (7:13;9:22).Theeffectofthisisthatit producesastateofdeath (5:3.21.25).
Theshepherdentersthroughthegatetotakecareofthe sheep,nottooppressthemormaltreatthem.Infact,thesheep recognisehisauthority(voice)andfollowhim.Thevoiceof Jesuscontainsamessageofliberationforthemthatistypical oftheMessiah.
