TheGospelofthisSunday-theThirdofEaster-isthefamous accountofthedisciplesofEmmaus(cf.Lk24:13-35).Ittellsthetale oftwofollowersofChristwho,onthedayaftertheSabbathorthe thirddayafterhisdeath,wereleavingJerusalemsadanddejected, boundforavillagethatwasnotfaroffcalled,precisely,Emmaus. TheywerejoinedontheirwaybytheRisenJesusbutdidnot recognisehim.Realisingthattheyweredownhearted,heexplained, drawingontheScriptures,thattheMessiahhadtosufferanddiein ordertoenterintohisglory.Thenenteringthehousewiththem,he satdowntoeat,blessedthebreadandbrokeit;andatthatinstant theyrecognisedhimbuthevanishedfromtheirsight,leavingthem marvellingbeforethatbrokenbread,anewsignofhispresence.And theybothimmediatelyheadedbacktoJerusalemtotelltheother disciplesoftheevent.
ThelocalityofEmmaushasnotbeenidentifiedwithcertainty.There arevarioushypothesesandthisoneisnotwithoutanevocativeness ofitsownforitallowsustothinkthatEmmausactuallyrepresents everyplace:theroadthatleadsthereistheroadeveryChristian, everyperson,takes.TheRisenJesusmakeshimselfourtravelling companionaswegoonourway,torekindlethewarmthoffaithand hopeinourheartsandtobreakthebreadofeternallife.Inthe disciples'conversationwiththeunknownwayfarerthewordsthe evangelistLukeputsinthemouthofoneofthemarestriking:"We hadhoped..."(Lk24:21).Thisverbinthepasttensetellsall:we believed,wefollowed,wehoped...,butnoweverythingisover.Even JesusofNazareth,whohadshownhimselfinhiswordsandactions tobeapowerfulprophet,hasfailed,andweareleftdisappointed. ThisdramaofthedisciplesofEmmausappearslikeareflectionofthe situationofmanyChristiansofourtime:itseemsthatthehopeof faithhasfailed.Faithitselfentersacrisisbecauseofnegative experiencesthatmakeusfeelabandonedandbetrayedevenbythe Lord.ButthisroadtoEmmausonwhichwewalkcanbecomethe wayofapurificationandmaturationofourbeliefinGod.Alsotoday wecanenterintodialoguewithJesus,listeningtohisWord.Today toohebreaksbreadforusandgiveshimselfasourBread.Andso themeetingwiththeRisenChristthatispossibleeventodaygivesus adeeperandmoreauthenticfaithtempered,sotospeak,bythefire ofthePaschalEvent;afaiththatisrobustbecauseitisnourishednot byhumanideasbutbytheWordofGodandbyhisRealPresencein theEucharist.
