Phonics and Reading at Our Lady of the Rosary

Joy Excellence Service

the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

CURRICULUM STATEMENT

At Our Lady of the Rosary School, we believe that reading is a vital life skill and our aim is to develop and create passionate readers for life. We recognise that enjoyment in reading arises from deriving meaning from text and that this is achievable for all children, no matter of their background or particular needs, by sharing high quality and engaging reading experiences whilst equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to decode words phonetically.

We have a strong focus on language development, knowing how fundamental it is to our ability to learn and communicate ideas, views and feelings.

We encourage children to express themselves creatively and imaginatively, and respond reflectively and critically to stories, poetry, non-fiction and visual texts.

CURRICULUM STATEMENT

We intend that children will-

· enjoy reading a range of narrative, non-narrative and poetic texts.

· use their phonetic knowledge competently and skilfully to decode new words.

· read fluently and with expression, engaging their audience fully.

· discuss texts they read, verbalising opinions and responses to questions accurately and confidently using a broad and relevant vocabulary.

We have a strong focus on language development, knowing how fundamental it is to our ability to learn and communicate ideas, views and feelings. We encourage children to express themselves creatively and imaginatively, and respond reflectively and critically to stories, poetry, non-fiction and visual texts.

We follow a systematic and synthetic phonics programme from Nursery onwards, as to ensure that our children build a growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through the school. Children will be able to decode unknown words phonetically and develop fluency and expression as they read.

We follow the Little Wandle Reading and Phonics scheme.

ASSESSMENT

Phonics; The children are assessed each half term by their class teacher. At the end of Year 1, the children will complete the Phonics Screening check.

Reading: Class teachers assess each child’s reading at least half termly. In the early stages, the children will read decodable books matched according to their phonic progression. Once the Little Wandle reading and phonic scheme is completed, children move on to the main school reading scheme. Teachers bench mark the children when they are ready to progress to the next stage.

Children complete National tests (SATs) at the end of Year 2 and Year 6)

ENRICHMENT

Last year, the whole school (children and adults) came together to create a living "Book Worm". Everybody brought their favourite book to school that we spent time enjoying whilst sat in a long wiggly worm shape spread around the school hall and corridors.

We have a well stocked and inviting library where children can borrow books on a regular basis.

We have hosted “Stay and Read” sessions for children in Nursery, Reception and Year One in their class and in the library.

SUCCESSES

Phonics – 100% pass rate in the Phonics Screening check for the last 3 years.
