THANK YOU FOR A GREAT YEAR! Dear School Families, Parishioners, and Friends of OLLIS, What a unique and remarkable time this has been since March of 2020 at the onset of the pandemic. We are proud and grateful that OLLIS was able to be in seat during the 20-21 and 21-22 school years. We never missed a day of instruction due to the pandemic.

With the collaboration of staff, we were able to develop a plan that allowed us to remain open and safe. Our enrollment increased during the pandemic and our waitlist grew as well. Students were able to participate in modified extracurricular activities and experienced school as close to “normal” as possible. The support of the three Catholic parishes in Columbia, along with the Knights, and other friends of OLLIS allowed us to offer a quality program to our families. OLLIS has had 61 years of offering a strong Catholic education to the Columbia community. We look forward to continuing this tradition in the years ahead.

Report This summary is a snapshot of our 2021-2022 school year. We hope the tremendous progress made this year, the efforts put in by our staff to create an excellent learning environment for your children, and our Columbia parishes is evident.

Dear Families, Parishioners and Friends, Our Lady of Lourdes Interparish School, like all Catholic schools, has as our fundamental purpose the mission of supporting parents in forming their children in the Catholic faith. Weekly Mass, daily prayer, Religion class, religious images and symbols, and other features of our faith provide an environment where the faith is taught and reinforced throughout the whole educational experience. The religious element is the foundation upon which education, athletics and activities, service opportunities, and social development work together to form the whole child. Families who are members of any of the three Columbia parishes and are committed to attending Sunday and Holy Day Mass, offering their time and talent in parish ministries and services, and making a financial tithe to their parish can apply to OLLIS. We do accept non-Catholic students when space allows, and those families pay a tuition to support the operation of the school. Safety Safety is our #1 priority. The school entrance is secure and all school doors are locked at all times. We also have a security system in place at the school and church.

OUR HISTORY There have been countless people in the school and parishes (Sacred Heart, Newman Center and Our Lady of Lourdes) that have been an integral part of the school's history. We want to extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation for believing in the importance of Catholic education. So many have poured their hearts into this beautiful school and their legacy can be seen every day in the hallways, classrooms, playground, gym, and library. Below is a snapshot of our history but for a more in depth story we encourage everyone to visit our website.

The first Catholic school in Columbia was established at Sacred Heart parish.

Two years later plans were drawn for a new Catholic school, Our Lady of Lourdes.

During the building phase (1960), students at OLL were sent to Sacred Heart and taught by Sisters of Mercy from Ireland.

Sacred Heart school closed due to falling enrollment so all students were moved to OLL. This led to overcrowding as there was only one small school building so once again OLL students were split between SH and OLL. 6th-8th attended school on SH campus and 1st-5th at the OLL campus.

In 1976, Kindergarten was added and the school name changed to Columbia Catholic School.

In 1979, the CCS cross was created by Diane Hawn and Mary Ann Gray.

Running two campuses was not ideal so a new project began at CCS in which a gym, library, classrooms, and offices were all added. When the project was completed in 1984, all grades were finally located on one campus.

The school was expanded once again in 1999, when the parish built a new church with 8 classrooms on the lower level.

In 2018, another addition to the building was necessary to eliminate the need for 8 trailers. This time 9 classrooms were added, a new art room, music room, library and new front office. This was completed in the Fall of 2019.

In 1960, student enrollment was 190. In 2022, student enrollment was 628.

REGISTRATION October of the year your child is 3 years old, admissions opens for that Kindergarten year. More specifically it looks like this: Admissions opens October 1, 2022 for Kinder 2025-26 for birthdates 8/1/19-7/31/20 while admissions remains open for Kinder 2024-25 for birthdates 8/1/18-7/31/19, and Kinder 2023-24 for birthdates 8/1/17-7/31/18.

Applications are date and time stamped and considered on a first come first serve basis, however, with priority given to registered, practicing Catholics and to siblings of currently enrolled students.

Following the admissions application step, the spring before the student's kindergarten year, the first 72 on the list are offered "conditional acceptance" and this is pending results of a readiness screening.

With the conditional acceptance communication sent to those families, we also schedule their screening appointment (typically in late Feb to early Mar). Once screenings are complete and the Kindergarten team review results, final acceptance letters (emails) are sent to the families.

TITHING VS TUITION Unlike a private school-which is established for the sole purpose of education, a Catholic school is a ministry of the parish. Private schools charge tuition in return for services provided. The goals of a Catholic school are the goals of the parish: Strengthen the parish community Form faithful Christians Proclaim the presence of the Kingdom of God Provide a solid education The job of a Catholic school is to partner with parents, who are the primary educators of their children, in the task of raising faithful disciples and stewards. This is why the parish funds the ministry of the school and sponsors children and families who are striving to live as active stewards. Catholic families in turn are asked to do three things: Commit to pray, which includes actively and regularly attending Mass on weekends and Holy Days of Obligation Commit to participate, which means offering their talent and a portion of their time to serve the parish community (volunteer) Commit to sacrificially give, which means to pledge a portion of their income to support the parish church Non-Catholic families are charged tuition since they are not members of the parish participating our tithing model.

OLLIS BRANDING INITIATIVE OLLIS families are passionate about the school and students. Our community is what makes OLLIS so special. The logos and mascot were created by a nationally recognized branding agency who is not only owned by an alumna but she oversaw the project.

A logo is supposed to elicit emotion, and the new icon shows faith, joy and safety.

The Cross (faith): Our Catholic faith leads our teachers, students and staff in daily activities, lessons and behavior. Keeping that sign of our faith in the new logo was paramount.

The Smile (joy): OLLIS has a special relationship with the parish and parishioners. After seeing an aerial image of the church she knew how she could incorporate the arch shape into the new design.

The "smile" component has two meanings, the church and joy. And we can all agree we need more joy in the world.

The Shield (safety): As parents, grandparents, caretakers and teachers, we all want OLLIS students to feel safe at school. Safe emotionally. Safe physically. Safe academically. Safe to be the person God has created them to be.

The more detailed crest represents the rich history of the school by including the established date of 1960. You will also see a rose that represents St. Bernadette which helps link the past to the present and into the future. And lastly, the agency created an original tiger for OLLIS. Go Tigers!

SOCIAL MEDIA We started our new social media accounts just a few months into the school year. We are proud of our students and teachers and want to show off the amazing work they are doing. These public pages are a great way for the community to get to know our school better and for our OLLIS families to follow along on all the action. Don't forget to invite your family and friends. TECHNOLOGY As we all know, technology is ever evolving and must be updated every three to five years. We are grateful we have been able to overhaul our infrastructure completely in the past 18 months. Since January 2021, OLLIS has made $454,414.26 worth of upgrades to technology on campus. Funding for the much needed upgrades was not available in the normal school budget and was only made possible through grant funding, the Emergency Assistance to Non-Public School program, the Emergency Connectivity Funds program, and private donations. The upgrades include: 590 student Chromebooks with charging carts 90 student iPads 30 Chrome boxes and monitors for the technology lab 35 Interactive Flat Panels for classrooms 48 Teacher desktop computers with monitors Projection system for the gym Upgraded content filtering system Upgraded firewall New network switches Upgraded wireless access points throughout campus

Our students are involved in service and charity projects throughout the year. K-8 graders are all asked to participate to help reinforce stewardship and serving others.

TEACHER AND STAFF APPRECIATION Home and School Association spoils our teachers throughout the year with catered breakfast, food trucks for lunch, treat carts throughout the day, gift cards, happy hour after school and notes from students. Be sure to let them know how much you appreciate them--today and every day.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2022 is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence.

Service.” OLLIS observed the annual celebration week with mass, theme days, and other activities. We focused on the value Catholic education provides to our youth and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. Our 7/8 graders presented to other students several charities that need our help. Students then decided individually who they want to support and donated $1-$3. We wanted students to experience limited resources and evaluating choice. They donated over $1,300!

The National Catholic Educational Association had a feature article in the Momentum magazine on the Top 10 Day of Giving recipients. Out of 200 schools that received donations, OLLIS was ranked # 9. This is a 24 hour appeal to OLLIS families and community members. This money is used for athletics, art, music and other school needs. This year the money went towards new choral risers and the athletics department.

ATHLETICS Our Athletic Director is always happy to see tournament wins but what makes her the most proud is to see high participation percentages for the various OLLIS Tigers sports teams. Participation at this level is a great opportunity to try new things, grow in individual and team skills and have fun. ART Kindergarten-2nd grade In K -2 Art, in addition to drawing with pencils, crayons and markers, students learn various drawing techniques with colored pencils, chalk and oil pastels. They experiment with color, using 4 different kinds of paints. They learn about fluorescent art supplies, and enjoy viewing our art with black lights. They use many types of glues for various projects. They make Christmas ornaments with sequins and rhinestones, mosaic Easter eggs, suncatchers with Mod Podge, beautiful crosses with fabric pieces, wax resist drawings, 3 dimensional pop art, and work with glitter glue. Kindergarten enjoyed creating an elaborate teepee project, and second grade created an elaborate nativity scene. The students take great pride in their creations and enjoy sharing them with their classmates!

3rd-8th grade Art classes for third through eighth grades involve continued building of art skills and exploring a variety of art media. Some projects are based on a particular artist and others are literature based, inspired by children’s stories and folk tales. Other projects draw inspiration from our Catholic faith.

Since color is everywhere in our lives, we focus on how to create colors, how to choose colors that complement each other and the effect they have on each other when placed side-by-side.

This is accomplished through crayons, markers, oil pastels, paint, construction paper and more.

In 3rd grade weaving is introduced and a number of projects become part of the Weaver’s and Spinner’s Guild’s Annual exhibition. A 4th grade favorite is the foil embossed crosses that are made from cardboard, yarn and foil and then colored with markers to create a beautiful stained glass like example of our faith. Students also begin working on how to draw more three dimensionally by seeing how 2-D shapes become 3-D forms. Students build on the 3-D concept of space in 5th grade as we draw a landscape that uses mission churches of the Southwest as a focal point. The one- class sculpture made from foam board is always a favorite.

In middle school classes, along with more skill practice, figure drawing and portrait art are introduced. Copper tooling is a 6th grade favorite. The 7th graders gain insight into what it’s like to be a writer/illustrator when they choose a style and do a creative writing and then illustrate it in the medium of their choice. In 8th grade Celtic interlace is explored and it becomes part of an illuminated letter project along with a Bible verse chosen by each student. The year is wrapped up with a color unit that reviews past information and applies it to a final piece of artwork using new ways to create color and value.

There are a variety of poster and photography contests as well as several in school contests that the students receive information about and are encouraged to enter. Sketch day is an annual event for 6 through 8 graders around the diocese who enjoy art and an opportunity to spend the day using their artistic skills. There is much more in between the projects and contests and the art program is constantly evolving to include ways to see how art is part of every aspect of our lives.

MUSIC Every student at OLLIS has music class at least once a week! Kindergarten-2nd grade meet twice a week, 3rd-6th meet once a week. 7th and 8th grade students get to choose their music class; band, choir, or general music. Currently, students can choose to participate in both band and choir, but they give up their SPEC class in order to do that. Each 7th and 8th grade music class meets once every three days.

Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade also have a grade level concert; 4th grade at Halloween, Kindergarten and 2nd grade at Christmas, 3rd and 5th grade in the spring. Students in 6th-8th grade have the option of participating in band, choir, ukulele, or Orff ensemble, so they do not have grade level concerts. Additionally, students perform at pep assemblies, the Veterans Day assembly, at Mass, and any other opportunity that presents itself!

Currently, we have a 6th grade band that meets four mornings a week before school, for about 25-30 minutes. They perform at both the Christmas concert and Spring Concert.

7th and 8th grade bands meet as a grade level once every three days during the school day.

Additionally, they meet as a combined ensemble on Friday mornings before school, for about 25-30 minutes. They perform at both the Christmas concert and Spring Concert. They also perform at pep assemblies and the Veterans Day assembly.

Recently, three 8th graders (Brianna Ganley, Ben Nolke, and Ryan Reedy) participated in the Northeast Missouri Music Educators Junior High Honor Band. Also, every member of the 8th grade band and several members of the 7th grade band participated in the CMU Music Festival.

Of the 15 instrumental entries that OLLIS had, there were 4 Exemplary ratings earned, 9 Outstanding ratings earned, and 2 Satisfactory ratings earned.

7th and 8th grade choirs meet as a grade level once every three days during the school day.

Students can participate in the Northeast Missouri Music Educators Junior High Honor Choir and the CMU Music Festival. The 7th and 8th grade choir performs as a combined group at both the Christmas and Spring concerts. They also sing at 8th Grade Promotion and Masses throughout the year.

The Ukulele Club is for students in 5th-8th grade and meet once a week after school. Students perform at the Christmas concert and accompany grade level performances at the spring concert. The program was recently given 20 new ukuleles thanks to the Giving Rainbow at this year's Pot of Gold!!

After-School Choir/Orff Ensemble is for students in 3rd through 6th grade. First semester, we focus on singing basics. Second semester is all about the Orff instruments! We have a complete Orff instrumentarium and the students will be accompanying the grade level concerts at the Spring Concert. This group meets once a week after school for an hour.

OUR FAITH Our Faith guides us in all we do. Athletes and coaches pray before games, 8th graders perform Live Stations of the Cross, students and faculty attend mass weekly, 4th graders create a nativity scene, 3rd graders study saints and host a special Mass and our teachers help prepare students to receive Sacraments.

First Reconciliation and First Communion Second graders start preparing for First Reconciliation and First Communion at the beginning of the year. Throughout the first semester, students are sent home with "Blessed: First Reconciliation" books. They read them at home with their families and have discussions. While in class, they watch short videos that go along with the book so they can have similar conversations at school and tie together their learning at home and at school. In the classroom, students learn all about the process of going to Reconciliation and making a confession and the purpose of this Sacrament. In the second semester, students are again sent home with "Blessed: First Communion" books. They again, read and discuss with their families and watch videos in the classroom to tie their learning together. In the classroom, students learn the different parts of mass and what the consecration is and why it is the whole reason we have mass.

Confirmation In early May, 118 OLLIS students received the Sacrament of Confirmation,completing their initiation into the Catholic faith. Those confirmed included 7th and 8th grade students, from Our Lady of Lourdes, Sacred Heart, and St. Thomas More Newman Center parishes.

OLLIS marked two major milestones with this group of newly confirmed young Catholics. For the first time, sacramental preparation for Confirmation was conducted as part of the school's religion classes. Much of the material covered in Confirmation preparation is covered in 7th and 8th grade religion class. Deacon Baker incorporated the "Decision Point" Confirmation program into the existing religion curriculum.

Saints Third grade students prepare by researching different saints and finding the one that speaks to them the most. They write a paper on their saint in school and put together a costume. The day of the event is huge! The students lead the 8:00 and 12:00 Masses wearing their costumes. This year we celebrated on Nov. 5 at 8:00 only. We usually have the wax museum in Flanagan Hall between the Masses for parents and students to enjoy.

FRIENDSHIP

SPIRIT DAYS On the 2nd Wednesday of every month, students are permitted to wear their spirit shirt and bring non-perishable food items to donate to the Central and Northeast Missouri Food Bank. Barrels are placed by grade level at the school entrance. Home and School coordinates monthly themes and volunteers bring ALL the fun to Spirit Day, just another great way for parents and guardians to be involved at OLLIS. A little healthy competition between grades is always fun to watch. In May, the students challenged themselves to bring 1,000 lbs of food for the last donation of the year. They shattered that goal, bringing in 1,695 lbs of food for the Food Bank.This school year our students and families gave generously and we were able to collect over 8,000 pounds of food.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES Big Buddy/Little Buddy One of the unique aspects of OLLIS is the Big Buddy/Little Buddy program. Kindergarten/4th, 1st/5th, 2nd/6th, 3rd/7th and 4th/8th pair up. They get together throughout the year to celebrate holidays, work on projects and have fun! Having a school with Kindergarten through 8th graders is incredible. The older students learn to be patient and lead by example, the younger students can watch their peers interact with each other, teachers and staff.

Parent and Teacher Socials Home and School Association puts on several great events to help build community and partnership between parents and teachers.

OLLIS has been fortunate to receive $722,765 in emergency assistance for NonPublic Schools. These funds must be spent on very specific items and meet certain requirements. The big items purchased include: second air purifiers for each learning space, all new student furniture for the entire building (a first for the school), teacher desk tops (on order), 7 interactive flat panels and $20,000 worth of books for the library. We were also able to upgrade our IT infrastructure with a new server, firewall and access points. In addition we purchased Wilson reading materials for grades K-2.

In a 2 week time period, OLLIS families came together and donated $53,750 to put in a brand new playground. This brought the total project to $145,000. What a great way to start the 2020-2021 school year.

Pumpkin Fun Run ROAR! Way to go OLLIS! More than 65 students participated in the Pumpkin Fun Run which earned first place and $500! Thank you to all the parents and students for another great turnout.

OLLIS dads invite Mizzou Coach Gates The OLLIS dads invited the Mizzou head basketball Coach Dennis Gates to speak with OLLIS students.

His 8 core values (friendship, love, accountability, trust, discipline, unselfishness, enthusiasm, toughness) and his relationship with God have guided him personally and professionally.

Afghan Refugee Resettlement Over $3,000 dollars in gift cards was raised for Catholic Charities to help Afghan refugees coming to Mid-Missouri. The 7th & 8th graders took this on as a service project & visited classrooms to help the children of OLLIS understand the needs of these refugees.

Honoring Mr. Fatherley

One part of the branding process that took place this school year was taking time to remember our past. CCS Alumni gathered at school to look at old pictures, uniforms and other memorabilia displayed outside the gym. The new school website will feature a History page with in depth information on the school history, the people involved and many great memories.

This year the OLLIS 8th grade volleyball team wished to sponsor an event to honor their former teacher, Mr. Rob Fatherley, who passed away this past summer from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. These athletes chose to support Rainbow House as it was his charity of choice. The event consisted of a volleyball game inside the school followed up with a powderpuff football game outside.

Over 150 people came to support the event and $1578 was raised. Robinson + Ries Orthodontics, a local business and parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes, matched the amount raised bringing the total to $3,156.

First Annual OLLIS Lighting Families gathered together to enjoy hot chocolate and cookies. Then everyone walked the halls of the school and looked at all the Christmas trees, made crafts with friends and visited with staff.

During Advent, students started each morning wtih a prayer service in the gym. Each grade level focused on a service project to work on throughout the Advent season.

ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB The OLLIS Athletic Booster Club had a successful inaugural year. The mission of the OLLIS Athletic Booster Club is to raise money to support the sport experience of student athletes, coaches and fans.

This provided an excellent starting point for the club in understanding the needs. And speaking of needs, our athletic department is growing fast with more and more students opting to participate in sports at OLLIS. Coaches meet with the Athletic Booster club to share the immediate, intermediate and long term needs of their specific sport.

As this is a new endeavor for OLLIS our board is finalizing committee leads, approval process and much more. We will continue to communicate Booster Club updates through the monthly newsletter.

Become a member of the Booster Club Please consider joining our newly formed Athletic Booster Club, the membership fee is $50. If you would like to donate more than asked, the money will be applied to the most immediate needs. Membership will begin in August and run through May. What you as a member get in return for your membership, is the opportunity to support your school’s athletic department and the needs of each sport. Information will be distributed separately for how to sign up.

HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION The OLLIS Home and School Association is a group of parent volunteers who work to create a positive, inspiring experience here at OLLIS by providing opportunities and improvements for everyone at our school. All OLLIS parents are automatically members of this important organization.

Our executive board for the 21-22 school year was comprised of eight passionate and hard-working parents that together had children representing every grade level here at OLLIS: Nicole Baldwin, President Whitney Manda, Vice-President Elizabeth Heidt, Communications Lead Ashley Simmons, Treasurer Lacy Priesmeyer, Community Enrichment Lead Sarah Anderson, Lower Grades Lead Amy Susán, Upper Grades Lead Kim Czerney, Spirit Lead Our primary areas of focus were community building, fundraising and spirit!

Home and School strived to create opportunities in our school community where we could build stronger relationships with each other and with our teachers. Social opportunities included a father/daughter dance, mother/son date, our first ever OLLIS Lights Christmas event and three parent/staff happy hours throughout the year. In support of our teachers, we provided teacher appreciation luncheons every quarter, assisted with three holiday classroom parties through our homeroom coordinator program, provided motivational snacks to students in grades 3–8 during Standardized Testing Week and coordinated a week full of events for Teacher Appreciation Week.

Fundraising is a critical part of our role. The profits from these activities are used in various ways to help our school thrive through support of our school, our teachers and our students. Our largest fundraiser of the year — Pot O’ Gold Auction — had a record-shattering year with net profits exceeding $235,000.

And finally, school spirit! It’s always a great day to be an OLLIS Tiger, and we’re always looking for ways to encourage this positivity! Home and School collaborated with the school’s alreadyexisting monthly spirit days to add extra special spirit and fun at morning drop off each month and throughout Catholic Schools Week. Kindergarteners and new families were welcomed at the beginning of each semester with welcome yard signs, 8th graders received some extra spirited farewells and kindergarteners graduated with spirit, thanks in part to the Home and School Association. And new this year, teachers and students were randomly surprised throughout the year with a special something from our treat cart.

HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION Additionally, Home and School sponsored special educational opportunities each semester for our parents and middle school students. Ben Tracy (from Safe Social Network) visited us in November to speak about digital citizenship and safe social media use. In April, Jim Marshall (from Cody’s Gift) joined us to speak about mental health awareness and substance use prevention.

Pot O’ Gold Auction The Pot O' Gold (POG) auction provides funding for 90% of the OLLIS Home and School Association Budget. This income is then used to support our school, our teachers and our students. More specifically, this budget provides additional revenue to the parish to help operate OLLIS, provides professional development opportunities and startup funds for teachers each school year, subsidizes an assortment of service needs, supports student activities and classroom parties, allows for building repairs, improvements and more.

The 2022 POG was one for the books. With more sponsors, more auction items and more entertainment than ever before, this year’s event was just…more. Net profits for this year’s Pot O’ Gold Auction exceeded $235,000!

More than $31,000 of those profits were donated to the Giving Rainbow, filling our teacher’s classrooms, Tigers Den and booster clubs with much needed supplies, books and equipment that will benefit all our students, teachers, classrooms and activities. An additional $26,400 of those profits were donated in the end-of-auction Paddle Raise, specifically earmarked for new interactive flat panel displays in our classrooms. With these funds, 14 new flat panels were able to be purchased. The remaining balance will benefit OLLIS and the Home and School Association in a variety of ways. Additionally, every year the HSA budget supports a major summer renovation project, which changes every year. This year’s project will be the replacement of organizational storage cubbies in all classrooms in the Educational Center. Due to the incredible success of this year’s event, in addition to the many ways these profits already serve our school, we are also able to fulfill additional needs: The new addition to our school, which was completed and opened in 2019, will be paid off! With all donors continuing to fulfill their commitment, we are able to cover the remaining balance.

Outdoor renovations to the school campus will begin! Remaining funds will be put towards the beginning of outdoor renovations to enhance our school’s outdoor environment.

Oktoberfest

Our relationship with OLL is invaluable for our students, families and parishioners. OLLIS students attend weekly mass and prepare for sacraments. Parishioners at all three Catholic churches in Columbia support students through tithing, prayers and volunteering. Thank you Our Lady of Lourdes, Sacred Heart and Newman Center.

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 33rd Annual Oktoberfest was held on Sunday, October 3, 2021. After having to cancel last year's event it was great to see so many people out enjoying the beautiful day. Attendees grabbed a haystack and listened to the tunes of Zach Simpson and Scott Denson. Carnival games filled the area and kids ran around trying to win as many prizes as possible. Food and drinks finished off the fun day. Lourdes parishioners and their families, along with OLLIS and Fr. Tolton High School families volunteered their time and donated baked goods for the dinner. The 2021 Oktoberfest raised over $22,000. This annual event requires a lot of volunteers so please contact the Our Lady of Lourdes parish office if you would like to be a part of the 2022 Oktoberfest.

Parish Summer Picnic The annual summer picnic is a wonderful opportunity for parishioners to come together for fun, food and fellowship. The pastoral council serves food and beverages following a special Mass at 5:30.
