While the highpoint of Independence Day for kids may be fireworks and hotdogs, this holiday means so much more and with all the heated politics as of late, I’m sure glad for this holiday to arrive. What to Wear? 10 Quick Tips for Back-to-School Clothes Shopping By Denise Yearian

Youth apparel is a billion dollar industry that peaks each fall with back-to-school clothes shopping. To get the biggest bang for your buck, consider these 10 tips:

Get a game plan. The most common mistake shoppers make is buying too much on impulse when faced with a large selection, or buying too much of the wrong thing. Before leaving home, know what your child needs and what you want to purchase. Otherwise you’ll be overwhelmed when you get to the stores.

Take inventory. Make a shopping list of the basic items needed based on the closet inventory. Though this list should be your guide, leave some room for flexibility. Your child may see an extra-special sweater that matches two or more basics in her wardrobe.

Establish a budget. While not every family can spend the estimated $635 on back-to-school clothes, it is important that you decide before you go shopping what you can afford to spend. Equally important is to know your price point – are you going to spend $40 or $80 for that pair of jeans?

Consider gender differences. Statistics show that parents tend to spend more on girls’ clothing than on boys. This is due, in part, to girls’ higher interest in apparel. Girls’ clothing also tends to be slightly higherpriced than boys’ because of special details, such as lace, buttons, and fancy collars. 8

Anticipate budget hikes. Keep in mind that as a child’s age increases, so does the price. As children move into adolescence, expect a gradual 25 percent hike in clothing prices. The combination of increased peer awareness and pure size—more fabric, construction, and fashion features—adds to the bottom line. Older children also tend to have a wider variety of social activities that require a more diverse wardrobe.

Spread it out & change it up. Since preteens and teens are in the throes of growth spurts, it may be best to spread purchases over a longer period of time. And don’t forget about alterations. Those too-little pants or jeans can be easily made into shorts or capris.

Look for value. While a budget is partly about establishing spending limits, it is also about getting the most value for your money. Since elementary-age kids, 6 to 11, tend to be rough and tumble, value often comes from buying quality, durable clothing with easy-to-carefor features. When assessing additions to your child’s wardrobe, consider durability, versatility, quality and comfort: ■■Durability. Look for good enough quality to withstand repeated launderings while remaining colorfast and not shrinking. Check for reinforced stitching and well-sewn buttons and buttonholes. When purchasing knits, go with fabric that is more dense than loose, with limited stretching. Keep in mind growth features such as elastic waistbands, adjustable straps, and longer shirt tails. Encourage a Can-Do Attitude about Academics By Heidi Smith Luedtke, Ph.D.

When we look at our children, we see possibilities and potential. We envision growth, learning and success. Even if our kids are struggling right now, the future looks bright from a parents’ perspective. But kids don’t always see themselves through the same set of lenses. A recent study by psychologist Kristin Lagattuta, Ph.D., and her colleagues found parents consistently underestimated kids’ worries and overestimated their optimism. Being assigned to a lower-level reading group or getting a poor report card may cause a lot of anxiety. Since kids don’t have the same skills and perspective as adults, they may not see a way out of their current situation.

Beware of Mixed Signals

Reality TV shows and overnight success stories reinforce the idea that some people have talent and others do not. Psychologist Carol Dweck, Ph.D., calls this a fixed view of ability. Kids who adopt a fixed mindset believe they’ve already got all the smarts they’ll ever have. (How depressing!) These kids choose easy tasks because they don’t think they can improve with repeated practice. If they don’t succeed right away, kids with a fixed mindset give up. They see failure as proof that they don’t have what it takes, not as a signal to invest more effort or try another approach. 10

Parents may inadvertently reinforce a fixed mindset in their attempts to boost kids’ optimism and self-confidence. Statements like “You’re so smart!” or “Math is easy for you!” sound positive on the surface. But they suggest kids should not have to try too hard to do well. As academics become more difficult, kids who believed “I am smart” and “School is easy” may begin to question their own abilities. Some kids start to doubt their smarts in elementary school, others lose confidence in college. At any age, the belief that you don’t have the right stuff can be devastating.

Build a Can-Do Attitude

You can help your child develop an optimistic learning mindset. Use these simple strategies to help your child set goals, build skills and overcome setbacks. Persistent practice is the key to academic success. Talk Up Opportunities. Each morning, discuss upcoming events with your child. Share your anticipation about a meeting you have at work. Say “I’ll have a chance to present my ideas,” or “I can practice speaking in front of a large group.” Encourage your child to share her coming events as well. A series of studies by French psychologists Frédérique Autin and JeanClaude Croizet found sixth-grade students who were told learning is hard and failure is common performed better on subsequent academic tests, even after they’d failed to solve a single problem in the initial set. Establish the expectation that learning is a challenge and many students struggle. Remind your child that practice helps build new skills: no one is born knowing how to multiply fractions or how to spell “catastrophe.” This relieves the pressure kids feel to prove they’re smart already.

Take Risks. Kids need to see parents step outside our comfort zones once in a while. Try new things that don’t come easily. Learn a foreign language. Run a race. Introduce yourself to new people. Model the kind of courage you want for your child. And if things don’t go as well as you’d hoped, zero in on what you learned. Every setback has a silver lining. Reframe Limiting Beliefs. Your child isn’t likely to improve his grades if he believes he failed a test because he’s dumb. A specific, situational explanation like “I 2016 ad.indd failed because I didn’t understand the vocabulary” or “I didn’t use the study guide” moves your child in the right direction. Ask guiding questions like “What can you do differently next time?” to help your child make the switch. Build Skills. Create a step-by-step plan to help your child develop new skills. Read books or watch how-to videos together. Create opportunities for her to practice in situations that aren’t too scary, like rehearsing a speech in front of the family dog. Once she’s developed basic skills and confidence, move on to more challenging situations. Highlight Improvement. Learning is a process. Encourage a growth mindset by commenting on your child’s progress, not his grades. Say “You really improved on your math facts,” or “Your essay has become much more organized since I saw the rough draft.” Use a simple chart to track improvement and remind him of how far he’s come. The best confidence boost you can give your child is the belief that he can learn anything, if he puts his mind to it. Say, “I’m proud of you for playing such a difficult song, you really stretched your skills” instead of “You’re a talented musician.” Share stories of scientists, athletes and artists who model passion for learning and dedication to development. Smart kids need hard-working role models.

Meta-cognitive Understanding

What it is. Smart kids think about their own thinking: they can take multiple perspectives and they’re aware of their own biases and assumptions. “Metacognition isn’t about grades,” says Leif Gustavson, PhD, Dean of the College of Education and a Professor at Pacific University in Oregon, “but it helps kids study efficiently and use knowledge effectively.” Students need to understand how and why they are learning the material in a particular class, he says. This is pedagogical intelligence. When students understand teachers’ methods, they can direct their own learning. How to build it. When your child completes an assignment or exam, ask “how did it go? What went well? What would you do differently next time?” Also, ask kids to connect previous learning to new experiences, Gustavson advises. This helps them achieve deeper understanding. Encourage your child to apply her learning, even if she feels uncomfortable. “Tolerance for ambiguity is a must,” says Gustavson, “there isn’t just one right answer in life.” Advocate for your child, not just about what she is learning, but about how she is learning. Reflection is critical.

Investigative Approach

What it is. Smart kids can define a problem, formulate options, test potential solutions and decide on a course of action. These are important life skills. “Classroom teachers struggle with how to make science, technology, engineering and math learning more hands-on,” says Dave Hespe, Co-Acting Executive Director of Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ. Still, recent studies show the overall science literacy of Americans outpaces citizens of other nations, Hespe says. Zoos, aquaria, parks and science centers are fantastic learning laboratories. How to build it. Teach investigative concepts and skills at each stage of your child’s development. Double your cookie recipe and let kids determine how much butter and flour you need, Hespe says. Study bridges you cross to understand their design. Ask kids how they could get over the river without a bridge. Look up cloud types online formulate a hypothesis about tomorrow’s weather. What it is. Smart kids recognize and regulate their own emotions and empathize with others. “Kids who develop these skills early in life get better grades, are less susceptible to anxiety and depression, and have healthier, more fulfilling relationships,” says Linda Lantieri, MA, Director of the Inner Resilience Program and co-founder of the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program, a social and emotional learning program implemented in more than 400 schools. Kids who can self-soothe when stressed are ready and able to learn from their experiences, without distracting emotional drama. How to build it. Regulating emotions doesn’t mean stifling them, says Lantieri. Don’t diminish your child’s feelings; help him understand what’s causing them. Increase his emotion-related vocabulary by introducing him to words like angry, frustrated, jealous, excited, and elated. Kids should be able to describe their feelings with some specificity, Lantieri says, rather than saying they feel good or bad. Be an emotion coach: encourage your child to explore his feelings and to take others’ emotional perspective. Empathy isn’t automatic, it is learned. Use your own upsets as teaching opportunities: explain stepby-step how you stop, calm down, refocus and then act.

Self-Expression

What it is. Smart kids develop a strong sense of self. They know their own strengths and challenges and make wise decisions. Kids crave a sense of uniqueness and they may feel pressured by intense demands to get good grades, fit in socially, and grow up before they’re ready, says Brandie Oliver, MS, Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind. Finding their own identity can be awkward and frustrating. It also subjects kids to risk, Oliver says. Peer pressure about alcohol, drugs and sex forces kids to make tough decisions. Bullying – in person or online – is a threat as well. Kids need skills to stand up for themselves. How to build it. “It is common for parents to think they are in the loop when they don’t know as much as they think, Oliver says. “Kids share information with parents through a filter.” Sometimes they embellish or omit key details. Listen deeply and encourage sharing. Validate your child’s perspective even when you don’t agree, Oliver says. Model the use of “I” messages, such as “I think” or “I feel.” Self-expression is crucial for personal well-being and social success. Kids who can voice their opinions respectfully become productive members of the community.

Pregnancy Pains How to manage the common aches, pains and general discomfort associated with pregnancy By Christa Melnyk Hines

The changing pregnant body may be one of Mother Nature’s more astonishing feats, but nothing grounds us like the aches and pains that tag along for the journey. Luckily, you can address most pregnancy pain gently, safely and effectively. Why you shouldn’t ignore pain. If you’re like many women juggling multiple responsibilities, you might feel tempted to grin and bear it, but don’t. “If you ignore pain and become increasingly less active, you can actually increase your pregnancy risks. Inactivity increases the risk of blood clots, for example, can weaken muscles, and may contribute to more complications or difficulty with labor,” says Dr. Michael Proffitt, OB/GYN. Why the pain? As your body quickly adjusts to accommodate a growing baby, hormones cause your joints to loosen and relax, abdominal muscles stretch and the pelvic bone separates. Furthermore, your center of gravity shifts as you gain weight. These factors combine to put extra strain on your musculoskeletal system. Swap your shoes. Proper footwear can make a difference for aching joints and back pain. If you’re still sporting those stylish stilettos, it’s time to give them a break and opt for low-heeled shoes with good arch support. Lift correctly. Ask for help rather than lifting heavy objects yourself. If you must lift something or someone––like your crying toddler––squat down, bend at the knees and keep your back straight while lifting. 20

Seek back support. Sit in chairs with good lumbar support or place a small pillow behind your back while sitting. Sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees can also help keep your back aligned. “If your bed is too soft, place a board between the mattress and the box spring. This can help provide more support and alignment of the spine when you’re lying on your side,” Proffitt says. Sometimes care providers recommend a prenatal cradle or support belt which holds the uterus and belly up a bit to relieve strain on the lower back. Find relief. Apply hot or cold compresses to your back or opt for a prenatal massage. Massage can also help relieve tension and stress-induced headaches, common especially during the first trimester. Exercise moderately. The exercises you choose to engage in during pregnancy depend on your pre-pregnancy fitness level. Avoid any exercise that incorporates sudden twisting or repetitive twisting. Walking, water aerobics and prenatal yoga can help you control your weight and strengthen your core muscles, which can relieve strain on your back. Feed yourself right. Drink plenty of water and maintain a nutritious, well-balanced diet to control your weight and manage headaches. “Excess maternal weight gain has much to do with musculoskeletal issues such as back pain, neck pain and sciatica,” says Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

Dr. Bret Gordon, OB/GYN. “Maintain a reasonable diet with reduced carbohydrates and lower caloric intake to keep your weight down. Over time this will minimize the onset of musculoskeletal pain issues.” Watch your sodium intake. Nearly every pregnant woman suffers from swollen ankles and feet in the final weeks of pregnancy. Support stockings can help. Gordon also suggests reducing your sodium intake and remaining well-hydrated. Put your feet up. Rest can also ease swelling feet and ankles, headaches and pressure on your back. If you must sit or stand for long periods of time, prop one leg on a low stool and then switch legs to relieve the pressure on the lower back. “The importance of adequate time off their feet is a tough sell to moms-to-be who have jobs, responsibilities and other kids that require their attention,” Gordon says. “But listen to your body. If it’s telling you to rest, you should.” Try other therapies. Proffitt says many of his patients benefit from physical therapy when at-home pain management techniques aren’t working. Acupuncture or aquatics therapy can also help. If you elect for chiropractic care, he recommends seeking a chiropractor trained in treating pregnant patients. One such chiropractor is Dr. Kezia Shine, who specializes in women’s health, pregnancy and pediatrics. She says back pain is one of the most common reasons pregnant women seek her care. “Especially for pain in the SI [sacroiliac] joint, which feels like a knife stabbing in the lower back when going from sitting to standing or taking the first few steps when walking,” Shine says. “We specialize in prenatal adjustments which focus on the pelvis so with specific sacral adjustments and a myofascial release (muscle release) technique called ‘websters’, 92 percent of our patients walk out without pain.” Reach out for mental health support. Just as emotional suffering can manifest as physical ailments, physical pain can hurt your overall sense of wellbeing contributing to depression or anxiety. Talk to your caregiver and circle of support if you’re struggling. “When having a baby, mental clarity and sanity is of upmost importance because the stress hormone can pass through the mom’s blood to the baby, leading to a potentially stressed baby,” Shine says. While pain is a normal part of pregnancy, contact your provider with any concerns. Your physician should be able to help you pinpoint the source of the pain and how to best manage it. SABOT’s “Storybook Houses” exhibit ends on the 10th of this month.

Mathletics brings together interactive exhibit features that get kids moving and exploring mathematical concepts like ratio, proportion, and scale. Complementing this exhibit and powering up kids learning, The DoSeum is launching the Mathletics Training Program, a summer math program that will get kids moving and outside, all while learning math! Kids who complete all of the challenges will be entered to compete in the Do’Lympics and to win a birthday party at The DoSeum. Exhibit runs through September 5. San Antonio Botanical Garden

Winged Wonders highlights the Garden’s winged friends, especially monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. These winged wonders find sustenance for their life cycle here at the Garden, sensitizing all of us to the importance of habitat for those who “co-habit” with us. The Botanical Garden plays a significant role as an Official Monarch Waystation. San Antonio is the only Monarch Butterfly Champion City, taking the National Wildlife Federation Pledge in 2015 to increase pollinator habitat. Art in the Garden is a yearlong exhibition at the Garden for which Shotz has conceived a newly commissioned large-scale, freestanding steel sculpture, Scattering Screen. It features small mirrored circles that “reflect light and scatter the visible surroundings into thousands of tiny pieces,” per the artist. Exhibit runs through June 2017. Storybook Houses presents five unique interpretations, selected from a competitive field of submissions, which will be on display for Garden visitors to explore inside and out. See kid-sized, family-friendly Storybook Houses in this interactive spring

exhibition. This engaging playhouse exhibit is the fourth collaboration between the Garden and area architects and designers. Area architects and design teams submitted entries for consideration, utilizing a wide array of styles and materials. A panel of judges representing the AIA, San Antonio Public Library and the Botanical Garden reviewed the designs and scored them based on a variety of criteria such as creativity of design and use/ re-use of weather-resistant materials; focus on recycling, reuse or sustainability; accessibility; collaboration with others; and design appeal for all ages of visitors. The winning Storybook Houses entries include: Oh! The Places You’ll Go, San Antonio & the Beanstalk, Diary of a Worm, The Little House and Sleeping Beauty. Exhibit runs through July 10. Girl’s Eye View: An Eastside HerStory is a photography exhibit and poetic interpretation from teen girls living on San Antonio’s Eastside. The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures will empower 10 teenage girls to tell their story of San Antonio’s Eastside through photography and poetry. The teens, participating in the GirlZone Summer Camp at the Martinez Street Women’s Center, will document their community, daily lives and heritage in pictures, then offer interpretation of their perspectives through poetry. Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed is the first exhibition at the Witte’s new Mays Family Center and the largest exhibition to be brought to a San Antonio museum in the city’s history. In this 10,000 square foot exhibit, visitors will have the opportunity to learn how the Maya built their towering temples and created their intricate calendar system. There are hands-on activity stations where the whole family can build arches, decipher hieroglyphs and learn drilling techniques. Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed uses a combination of authentic artifacts along with multimedia and interactive, hands-on activities to reveal our deep ties to this astonishing civilization. Mi Casa, Your Casa is a creative design installation conceived and created by contemporary Mexican designers Hector Esrawe and Ignacio Caden. The installation features ten red three-dimensional open frames in the shape of a house. Mi Casa, Your Casainvites the community to participate in the life of the Museum through recreation, social interaction, performances, and art-making. It is also a place of relaxation with hammocks. Parlour Games: Ruloff Kip’s Toy Theatre is an exhibit for kids of all ages. While vacationing at his Long Island country home in the winter of 1919, Ruloff Kip created a toy theatre for his young daughter, Elizabeth. The large, elaborate theatre features moving mechanisms, several working lighting schemes, and an array of set drops and cut-out characters, based on Kip’s house and family members. Long thought to be the work of artist Everett Shinn, recent research has uncovered interesting new perspectives on the theatre itself, as well as the fascinating background of its true creator and his family. Exhibit runs July 5 through February 5, 2017.

Coney Island: Visions of the American Dreamland, 1861–2008 celebrates the most iconic, uniquely American amusement park in the United States. Also called, “the People’s Playground,” Coney Island is a national cultural symbol that has inspired artists, musicians, novelists, poets, and filmmakers. From Coney Island’s beginning as a watering hole for the wealthy, through its transformation into an entertainment mecca for the masses, to the closing of Astroland Amusement Park following decades of urban decline, the exhibition explores 150 years of the lure of Coney Island. The modern American mass-culture industry was born at Coney Island, and the constant novelty of the resort made it a seductively liberating subject for artists. Taken together, these tableaux of wonder and menace, hope and despair, dreams and nightmares, become metaphors for the collective soul of a nation. Exhibit runs through September 11.
