Such a LOVELY Month! Once you’re married with children, “The Kids” take center stage. Then your busy job creeps in and steals some of your time away from your family. Not to mention the little time you have with your spouse which turns out to be a quick dinner, updates to the weekly schedule, putting “The Kids” to bed and then getting ready for another crazy day. What’s missing? The quality time with your significant other. Valentine’s Day helps me with the modern-day problem of making extra time for my spouse. You can’t escape the month, Valentine sales are in every store you walk into. This holiday doesn’t always mean flowers and a box of chocolates any more. There are many ways to show love and let your significant other know he/she is special to you. The challenge is to continue finding the time throughout the year. For some priceless and meaningful Valentine’s Day ideas read Sarah Lyon’s article “Pampering Your Spouse.” Sarah even has some tips on how to introduce this Valentine’s Day holiday to “The Kids.” While spring might be a month away, its best to plan on what your kids will do during the Spring Break from school. The same is true of the longer Summer Break when there is no school. Helping you find safe, enriching and fun camps and activity for your kids is why February marks the beginning of our Camp and Summer Activities section in Our Kids issues. Our special sections run in February – May issues. This month we highlight the many benefits for children who attend away camps. “Why is away camps a good idea?” Christina Katz can name thirty life skills your child can learn in her article “Well-rounded Camper.” In this month’s Party Guide, Pam Molnar offers a simple party themed idea. If you have ever hosted a StarsWars, Shopkin, or other themed party, you know how hard it is to hunt down the right themed napkins, plates, cups, not to mention the high cost on these specialty items. Why not have a simple, colorful rainbow party? For a list of rainbow themed crafts, games, foods and drinks read Pam Molnar’s article “A Colorful Rainbow Party.” All parents want the best care for their babies. To help with that, Sarah Lyons has some questions parents can ask when screening for a new pediatrician that is a good fit for your family. Check out this month’s calendar which includes the Asian Festival at The Institute of Texan Cultures, San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Universal City’s Annual Snowfest & Carnival and much more. Happy Reading!

Pampering Your Spouse Tips for Busy Parents By Sarah Lyons

When you become a parent, it seems like life can become very busy, very quickly. Lack of sleep, work, school, activities, and taking care of little ones often takes center stage in the home. While juggling schedules and managing the household, parents must become more intentional about spending quality time with each other. Show your spouse how much you love and appreciate them with a little extra pampering this Valentine’s Day. Here are some ideas that are meaningful, but aren’t impossible for a busy couple.

Go to the spa What could make your spouse feel more pampered than a day at the spa? Offer to take care of the kids and send your partner off to the salon for a day of relaxing or get a babysitter and go as a couple. If a spa isn’t your partner’s thing, offer to take the kids while he or she spends the day doing a favorite pastime. Your spouse is sure to come home rejuvenated.

Dinner in When our children were young, a babysitter was not in the budget. My husband and I would put the kids to bed early once a week and either get take out or cook a special meal at home. No television, phones, or electronics; just conversation and quality time together. For busy parents, a quiet night in is a perfect way to unwind.

Date night A date night is always a great way to connect with your spouse. Plan a night on the town doing things that you and your spouse enjoyed before you became parents. If hiring a babysitter isn’t an option and family is unable to help, try swapping with another couple. Watch their children for them while they enjoy a date night one weekend and they can watch your children the next weekend while you and your spouse go out on the town.

Surprise Let your spouse know you are thinking about them by sending a surprise to their workplace. Flowers are nice but 6

Our Kids Magazine | February 2018

also try cookies, balloons, a homemade treat, or even mail a card with a special note to their workplace. You could also take them to lunch if their schedule allows.

Do their “job” In most relationships, responsibilities are divided up between the two people, whether intentional or not. As a way to pamper your significant other, do one of their “jobs” without them asking. For example, if your spouse always mows the lawn, do it for them. If your spouse usually does all the grocery shopping, offer to do it one evening. Another idea is to let them have the “day off” and do all of their normal responsibilities that day.

Leave a note If you want to make your spouse feel special, leave them love notes. Simple and sweet notes like “Thinking of you”, “I love you”, or “Have a great day” will let them know you are care. Have fun with it and try leaving notes in a coat pocket, in their coffee mug, in their car, or anywhere else you know it will surprise them.

You pick If your marriage is anything like mine, we come to a compromise on what we would like for dinner, what movie to watch, or what activity we will do. Give your spouse the chance to pick what you will do the whole day. There can be no complaining about their choices, just focus on doing the activities your partner enjoys doing with you.

Pick up a fave One of my favorite ways to let my husband know I am thinking about him is to just pick up a favorite of his while I am out. If I am at the gas station, I grab his favorite drink, gum, or candy. At the grocery store, I pick up his favorite ice cream or snack. I rent a movie he likes, cook his favorite meal, or buy him a shirt with his favorite sports team logo. It doesn’t have to be an expensive gift, just something to let him know I was thinking of him while I was out. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

The demands of parenting can leave little time for romantic dates with your spouse. This doesn’t mean that working on your marriage and making your spouse feel loved and appreciated isn’t high priority. During the busy years of parenting, try these tips to show your spouse you care and keep your marriage going strong. Sarah Lyons and her husband, Justin, have been married for 14 years and have six children together.

5 Valentine’s Traditions to Start with Your Kids Valentine’s Day is traditionally a time for couples to express their love for one another, but it is also a great chance to show your children how much you love them too. While children typically exchange cards and small gifts on Valentine’s Day, this year try starting some fun new traditions for your family. Dessert first - Just once a year it can’t hurt to have your sweets before your meal. Offer cake or ice cream first and let the kids enjoy their dessert without having to eat their veggies first. Make it heart-shaped - After your dessert first dinner, serve up some fun Valentine’s Day themed meals. Heartshaped pancakes or heart-shaped pizza are both fun and easy. Get the kids involved in the kitchen and you will have more time to make special memories of your Valentine’s Day dinner. Go on a “date” - Many people go on a date with their significant other to celebrate Valentine’s Day but consider taking your child on a “date” to a place of their choice. If you have more than one child, each parent can pair off or take turns so all kids get to participate. Spending quality time together is a great way to show your kids you care and get the conversation flowing. Cuddle up - If going out isn’t for your family, set aside time to cuddle up on the couch with those you love. Make popcorn, put on some comfortable pajamas, rent some movies, and spend some time together relaxing and cuddling in the comfort of your living room. To make it extra special for Valentine’s Day, add red sprinkles to the popcorn and choose movies that have a love theme. Bake and share - Bake some Valentine’s Day themed cookies to share with someone you love. While you are at it, double the batch and share them with someone who may be spending Valentine’s Day alone this year. Cookies are a great way to show others you care and bring some cheer. CAMP GUIDE

Well-rounded Camper

30 Life Skills Kids Build While Away From Home By Christina Katz

Feeling anxious about sending your child away to camp this summer? Fret no more. This list of life skills reminds you of all the reasons to send kids to camp in the first place. Remember, being away from the comforts of home offers your camper growth opportunities in a wide variety of competencies. Best of all, once kids are safely dropped off at camp, parents can sit back, relax and enjoy some much-needed down time, knowing kids will return home transformed by their experiences. Here are thirty skills to remind parents why camp is always a good idea, as well as a panacea for twenty-first century predilections.

Physical Skills Fitness. If your child is a passionate about virtual realities, camp is the perfect motivation to get off the couch and get moving. You will be pleased when your child returns home tan, fit and inspired to keep moving. Proficiency. Does your child complain of boredom? Exposure to skill-building activities can convert 8

kvetching into pride. Aptitude, discipline and confidence come from doing new things. Safety awareness. Do you find yourself fretting about your child’s wellbeing? Then send her to camp to learn about first aid, water safety, and other safety protocols that go hand-and-hand with learning new things. When she gets home, she can teach you a thing or two about safety awareness. Eye-hand coordination. Concerned your child may be a tiny bit klutzy? Send him to camp to participate in activities that encourage process mastery like archery, horseback riding or rowing. Having to learn an ordered series helps dreamy kids focus and execute tasks. Healthy risk-taking. Is your child an adrenalin junkie? Do you worry that she will go too far testing the limits of what’s humanly possible? Camp is the perfect place to wear out a child with excess energy. Counselors can help campers channel a zest for risks into safe outlets while honoring camp rules. CAMP GUIDE Intellectual Skills Decision-making. Does your child waffle when making decisions, take polls of other people’s opinions or go along with the crowd too easily? Then camp is the perfect practice-ground to determine what he wants and needs on a regular basis. Choosing is a crucial ability for creating satisfaction in life. Accountability. Do you wonder if you do too much for your child? Whether she has to pack her own backpack for an overnight hiking trip or show up wearing activityappropriate shoes, being prepared for what’s coming next in life is important. When it comes to accountability, daily practice is always on tap at camp. Time management. If your child is often running late, camp is a great place to learn timeliness. Your child will swiftly master punctuality when engaged in activities she enjoys. And this proactive habit can carry over into everyday life during the rest of the year.

TexasAdventureCamp.net

Tolerance. Kids sometimes live in homogeneous rather than diverse environments. If all the other kids are the same race, class and social status where you live, how will your child learn to be open-minded? Camp is a great place to immerse kids in diversity so tolerance can take root. Assertiveness. When kids lives are scheduled from morning to night year-round, they miss out on opportunities to speak up for what they think, need and desire. Camp offers kids opportunities to practice healthy communication all day long because no one is smoothing the path before them.

Emotional Skills

Self-care. Kids can’t learn to take care of their needs unless they learn to pay attention to them. Going to camp puts kids’ self-care muscles to the test. Navigating a new environment with unfamiliar people helps kids learn to trust their intuition and honor their instincts. Listening. Do you get weary of nagging and feel your child just doesn’t listen anymore? Kids can certainly develop listening fatigue with parents and other everyday authority figures. But after tuning in closely to some new-to-them camp leaders, they just might bring better listening abilities back home. Playfulness. Got a perfectionist kid on your hands? Sometimes within the rush and rigors of daily life, families forget how to relax and enjoy life to the fullest. Camp is a great place to remember how to lighten up and enjoy the day. CAMP GUIDE Grit. This trendy term means the combination of courage and resolve. If your child does not bounce back quickly from disappointments, camp is a great place to learn tenacity, conflict resolution and problem solving. Self-appreciation. Do you appreciate the heck out of your kid but wish he would esteem himself as much as others? Camp is a place where kids can discover new things to like about themselves. Increased self-reliance is often the first step towards building higher self-esteem.

touch until they meet again. This is a great way for kids to maintain long-distance friendships and build an extended social network.

Social Skills

Cohabitating. If you want your child to learn new things, put him in a tent with roommates and watch the lessons unfold. Sharing space and resources with others is a crash course in self-awareness and peacekeeping.

Sociability. Do you have a shy or introverted child? If she lacks peers who are enthusiastic about her passions, an interest-based camp can help her meet more likeminded people. Socially awkward kids feel more accepted and appreciated every time they make a new friend. Emotional intelligence. If you have siblings who bicker quite a bit, they may benefit from getting along more easily with kids who are not kin. Camp counselors have a way of expecting thoughtfulness and encouraging kids to practice it. Lasting connections. Remember pen pals? At camps, kids can make new friends and find ways to keep in

Self-expression. Parents may unwittingly hold kids back from finding new forms of self-expression. At camp, kids find fresh audiences for the countless ways to share who they are and what they think and feel. Increased selfexpression leads to unfolding self-discovery.

Occupational Skills Mentoring. Camp counselors provide excellent examples of what a constructive mentor-mentee relationship is like. Go ahead and encourage kids to become counselors in the future if they wish to experience both sides of this educational relationship. Collaboration. Perhaps during the school year, teamwork is limited to sports and cooperation is confined to the classroom. At camp, every endeavor from cleaning

CAMP GUIDE a cabin to climbing a rock face becomes a new way to understand the importance of working together. Negotiating. Your kids benefit from learning how to sort things out between themselves at camp. Discussing, bargaining, and coming to agreements that make sense for everyone involved is tool for creating a richer life. Leadership. Camp provides opportunities for kids to discover and nurture the leader inside. Every child is a boss at something. You may not think of a prolific reader as a leader, but what a terrific example she can set at camp for those who avoid books altogether. Diplomacy. With bullying behavior at an all-time high, diplomacy is more needed than ever. Camp offers ample opportunities to find common ground, share mutual respect and practice win-win-win relating.

Environmental Skills Unplugging. Virtual realities are great when balanced with the real world. If you cannot seem to make a dent in your child’s obsession with technology, why not let the trained staff at camp take a whack at it.

Groundedness. The first step to recovering from too much anxiety is a sense of earthiness that comes from being in touch with the natural world. Kids benefit in numerous ways from slowing down to the speed of life and keeping their feet firmly on the ground. Navigation. You won’t likely be able to convince kids that they need to learn old-school map techniques while they have a GPS in their pocket. But put them in the middle of the woods with no Internet connection and they just might feel differently. Survival. Would your child know how to build a shelter, purify water, start a fire and find food if lost in the wilderness? Learning naturalism empowers kids to feel competent and confident in every area of life. Earth stewardship. One of the best ways to teach kids about personal responsibility is to teach them about wilderness conservation. Learning about flora and fauna can spark kids’ innate respect for the natural world. Author, journalist and writing coach Christina Katz spent ample time outdoors as a child, which fostered her love of nature, gardening and trees. She believes children of all ages deserve to regularly experience the wonders and richness of the wilds.

PARTY GUIDE

A Colorful Rainbow Party By Pam Molnar

You Don’t Need a Pot of Gold to Throw One!

Rainbows are sign that the sunny days of spring are on the way. Their colorful rays bring a smile to our hearts – much like our daughters do. If you are looking for a party theme for your birthday girl, a Rainbow Party is a wonderful way to celebrate. We have come up with four craft ideas, four games and menu of colorful foods and drink.

Rainbow Crafts: 1. Make tie-dye shirts – Provide the guests with white t-shirts and rubber bands. You can find a guide to folding and banding the shirts online. Using fabric dye, dip the portions of the shirt in the colors until the whole shirt is covered. Put the wet shirt in a marked plastic bag and send home with instructions for washing out the dye. 2. Friendship bracelets – Jewelry making is such a fun project with friends. Why not make friendship bracelets? Older girls might enjoy braiding colorful thread in a camp-style bracelet. Younger girls can use colorful plastic or glass beads and colorful ribbons to string them on. Depending on the age of the guests, you can use candy or cereal in place of beads. 3. Sprinkle candy bark – Place melting white chocolate pieces on a thick paper plates. Heat in microwave until it is in a liquid form – 1 minute usually does the trick. Encourage the kids to add cake sprinkles or small candies like Nerds. Use toothpicks to swirl 16

Our Kids Magazine | February 2018

around drops of food coloring. When the girls are done decorating, refrigerate the candy until it is hard. 4. Solar rainbow candles – Collect clear jars or purchase from Goodwill. Gather up all your unwrapped, broken crayons and place on the table where the girls will be crafting. Add a candle wick to the middle of the jar (try a glue dot to keep it in place) and stack a rainbow of crayons around the wick. You can add essential oils to give it a nice scent. These candles can be placed in a sunny window to melt a little at a time or can be lit to melt them from the top down.

Colorful games to play:

1. Rainbow scavenger hunt – Send the girls to find two items that are each color of the rainbow. This is a great game to play if it is nice enough to get outside as it gives the host time to clean up between crafts. 2. Pop balloon game – Place two slips of paper in each balloon – one with a challenge like recite the alphabet backward and the other one with a ticket to receive a prize for completing the challenge. Blow up the balloons and tie one to each girl’s ankle. On go, the girls will gently stomp on the balloons to break them, revealing the challenge. If your balloon is popped, you have to pick up the challenge paper and perform the challenge. 3. Fill the Cup – Fill a large bowl with colored loop cereal and place in the center of the table. Players each FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

PARTY GUIDE have five small cups in front of them. Using a regular sized spoon, players need to separate the cereal by color, placing 10 of each color in their cups. Challenge the older girls by making them hold the spoon in their mouths. You can also play this game with teams. 4. Fill in the Rainbow – The guests are given a piece of paper with bowed lines marked with the colors of the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, etc. Using a package of rainbow skittles, the players have to sort all the colors in order and place on the lines. First one done is the winner.

Eat the Rainbow: 1. Jello – There are so many fun things you can do with colorful gelatin. Try seven layer jello in a cup, stained glass jello, or using cookie cutters in a tray of jello. 2. Rainbow Pasta – This is such a fun idea. Cook pasta until al dente. Separate the pasta into bags and add several drops of food coloring. Seal bag and shake. Drain and rinse before serving with warm sauce or butter. You can even use different shapes for each color. 3. Fruit pizza – Fruit Pizza is a great way to get the picky girls to try new fruits. Purchase premade sugar cookie dough and spread out on a cookie sheet. Bake per directions. Let cool and spread cream cheese on top. Finish off with a rainbow of berries, melons, grapes, pineapples and kiwi. 4. Mini rainbow truffles – Divide prepared vanilla cake mix by six and add food coloring. Pour into cupcake tin and bake as directed. When cooled, crumble the cupcakes and set aside. Add a layer of Cool Whip to a clear glass and then add a layer of crumbed colored cake. Continue to alternate cake and Cool Whip until all colors have been used. 5. Rainbow drinks – Fill ice trays with colored Kool Aid and freeze overnight. Pour clear liquid like water or Sprite over colored ice and serve.

Goody bag: The best thing about this party is that the tie dye shirt, the bracelet, the candy bark and the candle are also the goody bag. Add a simple box of crayons and a coloring book from the dollar store and you will have a colorful bag of treats for your guests. Pam Molnar is a freelance writer, party planner and mother of three. What’s Up, Doc? Interview Questions for a New Pediatrician By Sarah Lyons

Beginning the search for a pediatrician can be very intimidating. Most parents find their child’s doctor through recommendations of friends, but how do you know if the doctor will be a good fit for you family. It is wise to set up an interview with the doctor to make sure that it is a good fit for you and your children. Here are some questions to ask to help you narrow your options.

Training

Is the doctor certified by the American Board of Pediatrics? This means the doctor has passed a specialized test in pediatrics. If you choose a family doctor, ask if the doctor is certified in the American Board of Family Medicine. Family doctors are trained to treat patients of all ages, including children, but they do not have a specialty in pediatrics.

Background

A great question to start with is ‘Tell me a little about yourself’. With this question the doctor should tell you how long they have been in practice, if they have their own children, and other pertinent information about their practice.

Bedside manner

While speaking with the doctor observe whether he appears to be rushed or distracted.

Parenting views

What is their view on parenting? For example do you have similar views on attachment parenting, breastfeeding, circumcision, and vaccinations? Make sure your parenting styles 20

Our Kids Magazine | February 2018

are a good match.Discuss any other areas that are specifically important to your child’s needs.

Do you feel comfortable talking with the doctor? Does your child? • Questions about the practice • Do they take your insurance? • Is the doctor part of a practice?

Will I see you or one of your associates when my child has a sick visit?

• What are the office hours? Walk-in hours? • How are emergencies handled? • What tests are handled on site? Where are other test done? • What hospital would your child be admitted to if needed? • How long does a typical check up last?

Observe the office

• Is the office convenient to your home, work, or daycare? • Take note of whether the staff is friendly and helpful. • Is the office clean and inviting? • Does the waiting room have toys and books? • Are there separate waiting areas for sick and well patients? • Do other patients seem to be waiting a long time? Choosing the right pediatrician for your children is an important decision. These questions should help you narrow your search and find a doctor that is a good fit for your family. Sarah Lyons is a busy mom of six kids, including 2 year old triplets. She spends a lot of time at the pediatrician’s office. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
