Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Historically, March 17 was a religious feast day for Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. But in modern day, it has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods, and a lot of green.

Some believe that an acceptable punishment for not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day is a pinch! Don’t forget to wear green!

Parenting Through Your Child’s Eyes Knowing the difference between misbehavior and child behavior

Children act different than adults. Sometimes their behaviors can be jarring to the way that we, as parents, think our kids should act. But it’s important to realize the difference between misbehavior and child behavior. Sometimes, what looks like misbehavior deserving of punishment is merely untamed child behavior in need of a little redirection. In these instances, what we need to do is teach our children how to be children rather than scolding them for not acting like adults.

When children say disturbing things

I once was riding a bus with my 3-year-old son. To pass the time, we pretended we were pirates and the bus was our ship.

At one point, my son looked out the window, pointed to some people walking on the street and said, “Let’s cut their heads off!” If you had been one of my fellow passengers who heard my child’s outburst, you might have wondered if my wife and I allowed him to watch violent T.V. shows. If I told you the truth (that he didn’t get that from anywhere but simply made it up on the spot), you might have then wondered whether my child is disturbed. If you are parent, however, you might have breathed a sigh of relief and thought, “Good, my child is not the only one!”

Cringe-worthy comments like this one are not uncommon in young children. The reason for this is that they operate in a different world than adults. The young child’s world is a play land of manipulatives where any action can be performed 6 Our Kids Magazine | March 2016

on any thing. It is a world of make-believe where cutting off someone’s head doesn’t have the same implications as it does in reality. Such statements are disturbing to us as adults because we are grounded in reality. We cannot help but think of the social and moral implications involved. But extreme concepts like murder may be something entirely different or even nonexistent in children’s pretend worlds. For this reason, reprimanding your child for saying something you find disturbing may do more to confuse her than teach her what not to say. Instead, a simple comment like, “No, I don’t want to hurt them,” can be a surprisingly powerful way to help your child understand the moral implications of their imaginings.

Before you rebuke, teach.

When children attack

We have all been there before. You are at the neighborhood park, chatting with the other parents, when you notice your child a little way off glancing back and forth between a stick he is holding in his hand and the head of an unsuspecting 2-year-old playing in the sand in front of him. You don’t have to ask questions; you can read his mind. You start walking toward him when you see him raise the stick high in the air, a wild look in his eye. You quickly snag the stick away just in time. You talk to your child sternly to make sure he gets the message. However, as soon as you turn your back it dawns on him that he doesn’t need a stick, and he whacks his friend Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

on the head with his hand. You snatch him away and up the intensity of your reprimand. Despite your swift and stern scolding, however, the behavior seems to repeat itself with the same frequency over the subsequent days and weeks. What more could you have done?

Believe it or not, aggression is part of normal, healthy child development. Around 1 to 2 years of age, children are learning to be independent, and aggression can be one way they express their newfound assertiveness. Of course, this does not mean that we should let every aggressive act go unchecked.

Do this and you may soon find your house full of broken things and devoid of any neighborhood children coming over to play. It does mean, however, that trying to alter the course of human development by keeping your child from showing any aggression may not be the way to go. Instead, teach your child how and when aggression may be appropriate. For example, instead of snatching the stick out of his hand, redirect your child to a tree and show him how he can hit the stick against the trunk. In your home, set clear boundaries for what your child can hit with the plastic bat. As your child learns these boundaries, redirecting his behavior will become much easier as you need only to remind him of what he can do. If you can’t stop the aggression, channel it.

When children act crazy—like, not-quite-human crazy

As a parent of young children, you’ve had your share of embarrassing moments. Maybe it was in the grocery store

when your child somehow managed to stuff a whole cantaloupe in his pants and was in a full sprint halfway across the store before you noticed. Or perhaps it was at home when you had company over (or every time you have company over) and your child decides roaring like a lion at the top of her lungs is an appropriate way to greet a guest.

Instead of trying to squash your child’s odd or undesirable behavior, what if you did the opposite? Instead of putting boundaries and limits on her pretend world, what if you expanded her pretend world and helped her discover new paths to trek? For example, instead of scolding your daughter for roaring like a lion every time you have a visitor over, what if you both pretended to be lions that acted like humans whenever a real human was around? Try it. Your child will be so thrilled that YOU are wanting to enter her pretend world with her that she might just take you up on that offer. Instead of putting up walls, blaze new paths.

Part of teaching a child the way you want them to act involves consistent, constructive discipline. But it is important that we, as parents, don’t take our efforts to shape our children to the extreme by punishing them for not acting like adults.

Instead, let children be children, only teach them how to be better children. This way, in the words of Pam Leo, author of Connection Parenting, we will be more likely to, “raise children who won’t have to recover from their childhoods.”

Today’s Summer Day Camps

The themes can be as different as technology, theater and tennis, but today’s summer day camps have the same goal – powering up kids’ bodies and brains.

That’s good news for parents who think their kids might lose their academic edge if they spend all their time playing. And, it’s good news for parents who worry that kids who would rather be solving science problems won’t get the chance to play.

At the annual summer computer day camps called ID Tech Camp at San Antonio’s Trinity University, “our kids have tons of fun,” says Karen Thurm Safran, the national ID Tech program’s vice president of strategic partnerships.

The program matches kids 6 to18 by age groups in teams of eight for a week of outside play and project-based problem solving. “By the end of the week, they can design a video game, they can code an app or they can make a website,” Safran says. “They are learning 21st century skills and using products that professionals use, so it’s very empowering.”

While coding an app can seem like the very opposite of playtime to non-technology minded adults, Safran says part of the fun for ID Tech Camp kids is meeting others their age who share the same interests in science, technology, engineering and math. “They’re having fun because they’re doing what they love in a dynamic environment,” she says.

mastering a sport outdoors can also build intellectual skills and boost academic outcomes.

“Studies have shown that kids who are involved in the performing arts are able to translate what they have learned throughout their participation into academic success,” says Andrew Gordon, education coordinator at the Carver Community Cultural Center’s Carver School of Visual and Performing Arts in San Antonio.

The Carver’s summer day camps this year include three-week theater camps led by the Renaissance Guild for beginners ages 6 to 11 and intermediate-level kids 12 to 18.

Two-week dance camps led by Dallas Black Dance Theatre are for kids 8 to18. Performances open to the public mark the end of each summer day camp session.

In addition to measurable increases in English and math aptitude stemming from participation in theater and dance, “it also helps a lot of kids come out of their shells,” Gordon says.

“Participation in the performing arts has been a breakthrough moment for some of the shy kids,” he says.

“If children demonstrate an interest in theater or dance, it’s an opportunity to associate with kindred spirits, and that might help them find the confidence that they need to open up to the world a little more.”

full-day camps that teach either sport or both, says owner and director Courtney P. Mayer.

Last year, more than 800 kids ages 6 to 16 attended Green Tree Tennis Club’s 11 half-day and full-day camps, where there’s also plenty of space to play basketball and horseshoes on the club’s eight acres.

“Physical exercise makes your brain work better. They complement each other,” says Mayer. “I’ve been an athlete my whole life, and I’m what you call book smart,” says the graduate of the University of North Carolina and successful business owner. She has operated Green Tree for 29 years.

“Look at the school or college tennis team, and you’ll discover that those kids are the ones who are making the best grades,” she says. “Tennis players are smart kids.”

Kids’ camp operators have been learning, too, says Mayer. Camps like hers used to operate for four hours a day for just three days a week. As both parents working full-time became the norm, day camps adjusted. “It became obvious that everyone’s going back to work, and parents needed something more. We were at the forefront of adding all-day camps.”

Today’s day camps also offer more variety, offering parents more ways to match what kids love or want to learn, to camps that combine specific themes with traditional activities.

For kids who love animals, the San Antonio Zoo offers summer day camps that allow kids to see and learn about animals. It’s all about puppies and kittens, as well as the occasional guest horse, at the San Antonio Humane Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

CAMP GUIDE Society’s Camp Humane day camps for kids. Kids can see whales, dolphins and other sea life while learning about marine biology at summer day camps at SeaWorld San Antonio.

For creative kids in San Antonio, there’s Camp Ink for budding writers ages 8 to17, Camp Showbiz at The Magik Theater for ages 3 to 17, summer theater camp at The Playhouse San Antonio for ages 4 to18, and Little Brushes Summer Camp at Pinot’s Palette in San Antonio for ages 4 and older.

For nature-loving kids, Cibolo Nature Center & Farm offers art and nature day camps. Texas State University in San Marcos offers a two-day Aquatic Science Adventure day camp that allows kids to identify underwater creatures and plant life from a glass-bottom boat.

For young sports fans, archery, swimming and hiking are on the menu at summer adventure camps run by the YMCA of Greater San Antonio. The NBA’s San Antonio Spurs franchise offers summer basketball programs for kids.

For parents on a budget, the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department’s eight-week summer youth program for kids 6 to 14 costs as little as $25 for income-eligible families. Other day camps offer early registration discounts and scholarships. If you’re on a tight budget, camp operators’ advice is to call and ask about available discounts.

Healthy Snacks to Pack For Your Kids

When you’re a parent on the go, opportunities to provide your kids healthy snacks can seem limited. Too often in the hustle and bustle of playing chauffeur we find ourselves at another fast food drive-thru to feed the busy mouths chattering in the backseat. And to add insult to injury there are so many other “to-do’s” that take precedence over making nutritious snacks. Let’s just grab a bag of chips and get on with our day, right?

It’s time to get out of the snack food slump and fill those active, little mouths with something nutritious and tasty. And this time around you won’t be putting in long hours in the kitchen.

Purge yourself of all former snacking habits. You have to make room for change and sugar is the place to start. The amount of sugary snacks given to kids needs to end.

Studies from Concordia University are clear that too much sugar, and of the wrong kind, doesn’t sustain energy levels and reduces performance of the brain. So when the kids get home from school and have to head off to soccer practice or have to start their homework, provide protein packed treats to satisfy their body’s need for fuel.

Customize the trail mix. Take nuts, seeds, crackers and even a small amount of candy to cater to what your child loves. A favorite from The Food Network 20

blog is popcorn, banana chips, or other dried fruit, a couple Hershey kisses and a favorite low-sugar cereal.

You can “Trail Mix-n-Match” frequently so it’s always a surprise for them.

Learn to love replacing junk food with choices that are just as enjoyable to your taste buds. You don’t have to become a snack food extremist to boost your health. Take what your child already loves and if it’s unhealthy, find the healthier alternative. One of America’s most beloved desserts is often being eaten as an after school snack in addition to an after dinner treat. Fortune magazine says, “In any given two-week period, according to research by NPD Group, 40% of Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

Americans will eat ice cream.” If your kids are ice cream lovers, replace it with its sister treat, yogurt.

While yogurt still tends to be high in sugar, it also contains fiber and other vitamins that make this snack a win-win for both kids and parents. Drop dime size amounts of yogurt on a baking sheet and freeze them for a yummy frozen treat. Taking it up a notch, pour your favorite yogurt in mini muffin tins, add some fresh fruit, freeze for a couple hours and you have a very healthy version of ice cream cups.

For all the picky eaters in the house, especially the veggie haters, a great way to sneak in some nutrition before dinner is with vegetable muffins. Spinach is a rich source of several dietary fibers, iron and is chalk full of vitamins. And, the best part for kids? They can’t taste it. Other popular vegetable muffin recipes you can find include zucchini and carrots. Double chocolate chip zucchini muffins and carrot cake pops are just a couple of the recipes you can find on many popular food websites.

Add a scoop or two of vanilla or chocolate protein powder into the batter and you’ve got a monstrosity of super foods in one small pastry.

Finally, with all the lingering time on your hands from these quick snack solutions, you can store your snacks in new ways; just don’t forget to grab them on your way out the door! Presentation is everything. It’s always more fun eating pancakes with a smiley face on it made out of strawberries than the usual plain pancake with fruit on the side. Reinventing the oldies puts a fun twist on the once boring snack time. Instead of Ziploc bags, take a tackle box and fill each compartment with a different item. It’s a great storage container for all the little odds and ends of nutritious snacks. If you have any mason jars lying around, put a layer of hummus in the bottom and stick celery, carrots and peppers inside. They also make great fruit parfait cups. Grab one from the fridge before you run out the door.

It’s easy to become a drive-thru junky; but it can be even easier to have your own healthy snacks to pack in lunches, bags, or in the car. Helping your kids snack smarter will enhance their mental vibrancy and be the better stimulant you want for their active lives. And since parents tend to eat what their kids do, everyone is taken care of.

There is a point in every parent’s life when a complete meltdown ensues, which typically happens when we have run out of coffee, traffic is causing us to be late for work, and the boss is breathing down our necks. We then proceed to go about our day with all of the pent up frustration of a bad morning so that at the end of the day, we end up yelling at the kids and pets and proceed to zone out in front of the television or have a few glasses of wine…or both.

This is a classic example of an adult temper tantrum. If adults have weekly and sometimes daily temper tantrums how can we expect children not to have one, especially if they are mirroring our behavior?

What causes a temper tantrum?

Temper tantrums are a build up of emotion, which causes the Amygdala (the center of the flight/fight/freeze response) to release large amounts of cortisol, adrenaline and testosterone into the muscles triggering a tremendous burst of energy. The chemical release can be exacerbated if the child perceives the parent as the threat because of how the parent is reacting to the tantrum.

Believe it or not, children don’t wake up in the morning and make the decision to be a brat. “Tantrums are usually a response to the learned behavior or a result of built up stress,” says Melissa Schwartz, parenting coach and co-founder of Leading Edge Parenting. In her book Authentic Parenting, there are two basic types of tantrums: manipulative and stress induced.

Manipulative Tantrums

Manipulative temper tantrums are a result of repetitive behavior that parents have contributed to without meaning to do so. For example, during a trip to the grocery store, the child wants a toy or a snack and the immediate reaction is to say, ‘No.’ The child will whine until they get what they want, which usually ends with the parent giving in because the parent wants to avoid an embarrassing situation in the store.

To prevent this type of tantrum, it’s important to have 22

established rules and real age appropriate expectations and routines in place. An example would be to have the child understand when going to the grocery store he won’t get a toy.

If the child asks for a toy, the parent can say, “That toy does look like a lot of fun. Maybe for your birthday.”

If the whining begins, the parent can respond with, “I know you like that toy, but you know we don’t buy toys while we’re at the grocery store.

Maybe we can come back when it’s your birthday, and you can pick out your favorite toy.”

Even though the whining may persist, Schwartz recommends remaining consistent and understanding with the child and knowing that despite all efforts the child may still have a meltdown, which is typical for children between 1-3 years old.

Stress Tantrums

“We can help prevent stress tantrums when we learn to read our children’s signals,” says Schwartz.

These tantrums are often caused when a child is emotionally exhausted or frustrated. The best way to curtail these reactions is to assess your child’s day and ask yourself, “Do I really need to make one more stop?”

It’s important to recognize the first signs fatigue, hunger, and crankiness, as these are usually the first signs of a temper tantrum.

The daily routines of school, work, and extracurricular activities have become so over-stimulating that it’s unfair to expect our children to just ‘handle it.’

Six tips to preventing a meltdown

Temper tantrums can be preventable, and The American Academy of Pediatrics offers the following suggestions: ■■Offer praise when the child is acting appropriately.

■■Distract your child from an area you know will cause a

reaction by singing a song, moving to another area or offering the child another option.

■■Be consistent when accommodating your child and only do so when it’s appropriate.

When there are signs it may be more than a tantrum

Children with Sensory Processing Disorders have a low tolerance for change, or lack of control of their environment and the way the sensory information is delivered to their brain is sent differently compared to typically developing children. “If a parent notices extreme behaviors are consistent with particular activities, this could be a warning sign that there is more going on with a child than the child just not getting their way,” says Amy Baez, MOT, OTR/L, pediatric occupational therapist, author and founder of Playapy and the Playapy Handwriting Program.

“The slightest thing can set a child off who has a sensory disorder such as textures on the skin, smells in the room, what the child is eating, lights in the room, movement in a vehicle, pressure from a hug, and these triggers can cause behaviors that lead a child to avoid activities and fall behind in developmental milestones,” Baez added.

An occupational therapist can evaluate a child to determine if the behaviors are enough of a concern to qualify for services for children with a sensory processing disorder or can offer parents guidance to curb inappropriate behavior.

“We are embarrassed when our children don’t share, are uncooperative, throw a tantrum or behave irresponsibly. We are so hooked into fearing we might be judged; we have a knee-jerk reaction that entails making demands, threatening or punishing, rather than patiently teaching our children the skills needed to act differently,” said Schwartz.

Schwartz points out that many parents want a quick fix for complicated issues. But, effective parenting isn’t about an easy fix because a parental response to a child’s behavior must meet both short-term and long-term goals. “Parenting can never be about clever techniques and tricks designed to control a child. Instead, it begins with connecting,” explained Schwartz.

The old adage rings truer than ever as parents. At some point, we realized we can’t control the actions or reactions of others around us, but we still try to enforce some control over our kids. Children need boundaries, and they need to learn how to act appropriately in social and private situations, which comes from allowing them to mirror our reactions of how to handle the obstacles life throws at us.

We’re not perfect so we certainly can’t expect our children to be, but we can practice what we preach.

This architectural rendering of the “Diary of the Worm House” will be reality along with four other unique and interactive interpretations of “Storybook Houses” during an upcoming exhibition that opens March 5 at the Botanical Garden.

McNay Art Museum

The Extraordinary Ordinary: Three Installations highlight artists Tom Burckhardt, Ernesto Pujol, and Sandy Skoglund use of the stuff of ordinary life to create extraordinary environments. In FULL STOP (2004-05), Burckhardt fashions a full-scale artist’s studio from corrugated cardboard, black paint, wood, and hot glue. The walk-through installation depicts a mythical artist’s studio, with sly references to luminaries including Edward Hopper, Jasper Johns, and Jackson Pollock. Pujol’s Walk#1 (2005-06) premiered at the McNay in 2006 and was subsequently acquired by the museum. Through photographs and artifacts, Pujol takes the viewer on a meditative walk through a Southern cemetery, observing a solitary robed figure as he encounters the cemetery’s natural views and architectural details. Skoglund’s The Cocktail Party (1992) recreates this domestic ritual using bright orange junk food snacks covering figures, furniture, walls, and floor.

Acquired by the McNay in 2009, this presentation is the McNay’s second exhibition of the full three-dimensional tableaux, and is accompanied by a large color photograph of the same subject.

San Antonio Botanical Garden

Storybook Houses presents five unique interpretations, selected from a competitive field of submissions, which will be on display for Garden visitors to explore inside and out. See kid-sized, family-friendly Storybook Houses in this interactive spring exhibition. This engaging playhouse exhibit is the fourth collaboration between the Garden and area architects and designers. Area architects and design teams submitted entries for consideration, utilizing a wide array of styles and materials. A panel of judges representing the AIA, San Antonio Public Library and the Botanical Garden reviewed the designs and scored them based on a variety of criteria such as creativity of design and use/ re-use of weather-resistant materials; focus on recycling, reuse or sustainability; accessibility; collaboration with others; and design appeal for all ages of visitors. The winning Storybook Houses entries include: Oh! The Places You’ll Go, San Antonio & the Beanstalk, Diary of a Worm, The Little House and Sleeping Beauty. Exhibit runs March 5 through July 10.

Institute of Texan Cultures

“The Life and Legacy of César E. Chávez, Dolores Huerta, and Farm Workers” is an art exhibit telling stories of the battle for labor rights. Originally founded 13 years ago with the help of activist Jaime Martinez, the annual student art exhibit comes to the Institute of Texan Cultures as a part of the César E. Chávez March for Justice Week.

Faces of Survival features the work of UTSA graduate and honor students who have produced the new exhibit for display at the ITC. The class used the Holocaust as a model to explore the conditions that can lead to genocide at any time, in any place: Germany, Cambodia, Armenia, Rwanda, Guatemala and other nations. A concentration camp uniform is among the artifacts to be displayed.

Student researchers have collected accounts of the atrocities targeting ethnic, political or undesirable classes or groups, and photographs documenting the end result.

The Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio has supplemented the students’ findings with additional artifacts and materials. “Faces of Survival” explains how hatred, intolerance and discrimination become pre-conditions for mass murder. The students highlight the voices and faces of the victims and recognize that there can be no victims without perpetrators and bystanders. Exhibit runs through March 6.
