Get Ready for School Magazine

This summer seems to be flying by, but there is still much to do before school starts. Buying school supplies, updating shot records and shopping for new school clothes. For some tips on the latter, Denise Yearian’s article offers strategies to help Magazine parents know what to look for when they are “Back to School Clothes Shopping.” Another thing that will be on many of our list of “to do’s” this month is investigating after-school care and/or activities. Whether your child is interested in sports, arts or just needs some extra tutoring, check out our afterschool directory Magazine and it’s comprehensive list of activities for students. Also, be sure to read Christina Katz “25 Ways To Enrich Your Child’s Education” in which she points of the need for creative enrichment for children. One subject, in particular, that helps make creative thinkers is in the field of the arts and Katz has complied a helpful list for parents. Magazine While you are busy getting ready for school to start, your child may be excited and jumping for joy to go back. For some children though, this time of year can cause anxiety from fear of the unknowns of a new school year. Ashley Talmadge has some advice in her article “Back-to-School Butterflies?” For mothers with newborns, your health professional probably explained the benefits of breastfeeding; but who do you turn to for the etiquette in breastfeeding in public? Read Christa Melnyk Hines article “A New Mom’s Guide to Nursing in Public” for practical information on public breastfeeding. At last, the week has finally arrived. Our Kids Magazine’s 4th Annual “Kidcation Week” is set for August 6 -14. Check out this month’s calendar for Kidcation events and a list of participating businesses and organizations. There are many other family friendly events scheduled throughout the month including Jazz Fest, Dog Days of Summer, Latch on SA, Tejas Rodeo in Bulverde, and the last of the free summer movies. Back-to-School Butterflies? Helping Your Child Calm the Jitters By Ashley Talmadge

Colin* was starting 6th grade in a new school. At an orientation event, he became visibly unnerved as he struggled with the combination on a sticky locker. “He was concerned that he wouldn’t be able to open his locker with only four minutes between classes,” says mom Lynn Brown. (*Names have been changed to protect privacy.) Colin’s particular fear is surprisingly common, and so is his apprehension about the beginning of a new school year. Most kids, even excited ones, experience a few butterflies in the first weeks. And the source of such uneasiness is not always obvious to parents.

are afraid to flush the toilet in the loud echo-prone bathrooms.” Older kids who are beginning to measure themselves against peers, may feel humiliated if they wear the “wrong” clothes or come to school with a “nerdy” haircut. Major transitions can cause feelings of insecurity, even if a child has previously done well. Brown says that Colin was “extremely successful and a model student” during his elementary years. Yet, as a kid who “thrives on routine and predictability,” it took time for Colin to adjust to the new academic expectations, the more complicated schedule, and the pre-teen social dynamics of his new school.

What kids worry about.

Signs of anxiety.

Age, experience, and temperament all determine a child’s concerns. Young children with little experience outside the home may have separation anxiety. “Being in the care of adults other than their parents can be initially stressful for some children,” notes Deb Cockerton, a child and youth behavioral counselor. These youngsters also worry about practical matters, such as finding the bathroom and getting on the right bus. When they’re a bit older, children worry about whether they’ll have friends in their class and where they’ll sit at lunch. Older tween-age students are “concerned about how they will fit in with their peers, and how they will do academically,” says Cockerton. The start of puberty and issues like cyberbullying, body image, and athletic ability may be additional stressors. Some worries are not obvious to parents. Kerry Norris, principal and longtime educator, says, “There are always some things we don’t think of as adults…We’ve had little ones who 8

Kids express anxiety in many ways. Some are vocal and quite specific about their concerns. But more often it is a child’s behavior that indicates his distress. Cockerton says, “The younger child can become more ‘clingy,’ not wanting to leave mom’s side.” The tummy ache is a common symptom of stress in younger kids. Older children can also suffer physical symptoms, such as headaches. They may eat more or less than usual when they’re feeling anxious, and Norris notes they may also experience sleep interruptions and moodiness.

How parents can help.

Kids feel more confident and competent when they come to school prepared. Experts like Cockerton and Norris agree that parents play a leading role in helping kids cope with backto-school fears. Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

Here are 11 ways to calm the jitters: Talk to your child about what worries her. Provide accurate information if she is misinformed. Listen carefully and respond empathetically. Avoid saying, “Don’t worry. You’ll be fine!” Focus on your child’s very real concerns. Create safe space. The tween who resists face-to-face conversation may “open up” at unexpected moments. Look for natural opportunities to listen and check in during daily activities— riding in the car, doing a chore, playing a game. Read books. Cockerton says books can give kids “language to express what they are feeling.” School-challenged characters can also normalize a child’s feelings. List it. Help kids refocus on the positive by listing the things they’re excited about as well as the things that scare them. Tour, meet, and greet. Visit the school so your child can see the layout. Make introductions to teachers and other school personnel. Play “what if…” What would you do if you forgot your lunch? What would you do if couldn’t find your homework? This technique gets even the youngest kids involved in problem-solving.

As Principal Norris says, “Developing the skills to solve problems independently lasts a lifetime!” Role play. Act out potentially uncomfortable interactions: What can you say if you want to be friends with someone? What can you do if someone is mean to you? Resist overscheduling. Keep extracurricular activities manageable, especially during the first months of school. Kids need down time to unwind and reflect. Show confidence. Let your child know you trust her ability to succeed. Remind her of the many challenges she’s faced and managed in the past. Check parental fears. As Cockerton says, “Children are very good at reading their parents’ emotions and if the parent is worried about how their child will do at school, the child will interpret that as ‘something to be worried about.’” Resist oversharing your own fears with your child. Get help. If your child’s difficulties persist, Brown says, “Networking with the school personnel is a critical piece of the puzzle…Open communication with school teachers, counselors, and others is paramount to ensuring the most successful year possible.” Ashley Talmadge is a freelance writer and mother of two elementary-age boys. She has found that each school year brings its own set of fascinations and challenges.

AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY

25 Ways To Enrich Your Child’s Education Exposure To The Arts & Why Our Future Depends On Creative Thinkers By Christina Katz

If I have observed one thing after a decade of having a school-age child, it’s that arts motivated kids perform better in school. Sure, my daughter comes from an artsy family already. Her mom is a writer and her dad is a theater director, but she’s not an extension of us; she is uniquely herself, and her exposure to a wide variety of arts helps her discover her own passions, proclivities, and personhood. The more types of arts my daughter engages in, the happier and more motivated of a student she becomes overall, even in her most challenging academic classes. But don’t take my word for it. Check out the messages broadcast prolifically by Sir Ken Robinson, author of the book, Finding Your Element, How To Discover Your Talents & Passions and Transform Your Life. One of the most popular TED speakers and a creativity and education expert, Robinson asserts that the job of education is to teach children to become creative thinkers rather than merely good workers. In addition to Robinson’s theory that a child’s exposure to a steady stream of his or her talents and passions leads to finding future work right in their element, we must remember something else: the greatest challenges faced by civilization are going to be solved by our children one day. Do we want them to behave like well-behaved workers or do we want them to become the creative thinkers, problem-solvers, and innovators they were born to be? Participation in the arts is just as important to raising wellrounded children as participation in academics and athletics. The arts awaken personal power in children by helping them 10 Our Kids Magazine | August 2015

discover their talents and passions organically. I know this is true because my daughter loves to sing, dance, act, and draw already. Recently she’s also started reading Shakespeare, watching historical documentaries, playing the piano, and taking hip-hop classes. I am not bragging. But I am keenly aware that I may have been inadvertently putting imagined limits on just how creative my daughter could become. Now, thanks to her example, I am beginning to think that there isn’t anything she can’t do. And isn’t that exactly what I want her to believe? Why do parents put limits on kids’ creative impulses when creative activities clearly benefit real-world performance? My daughter has got the rest of her life to discover and pursue creative activities that light her up from the inside and inspire her to be the best she can be. My job as her mother between now and the day she ventures out into the world is to make sure she never runs out of opportunities to practice being her multi-faceted self. She can sift and sort through what she likes best and doesn’t prefer for herself. She doesn’t need me for that, except to remind her that how she spends her time and energy in life is her choice. When I leave this world some day, as of course I will-we all will, I want to depart knowing I exposed my daughter to as much personal enjoyment of life as I could. And the arts will have played a leading role in this endeavor. I don’t want my daughter’s focus in life to be on survival or drudgery; I want her life to be a celebration of the art of being herself. And, in FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY order to do this, she has to explore and assess her talents and abilities in her own ways. If you are denying your kids access to the arts because you think creativity is less important or less valuable than academics and athletics, I hope you are planning to stick around for a few more decades to witness for yourself the important role creativity will play in the evolution of our future. If you are, as I was, inadvertently capping the amount of creative activities your kids participate in to levels deemed reasonable, I hope you will stop. Instead of cutting the arts out of our kids’ schedules, we need to allow access to as much arts activity as a child’s schedule permits. They can set the bar to a level that feels right from there. Here are twenty-five types of activities to expose your kids to both in school and outside of school. Please don’t be confused about whose job it is to expose our kids to the arts. Arts engagement is a parent’s job first, before teachers or instructors get involved. Engage your children in the arts and watch the magic happen. They will thank you for your encouragement today and in the future with their smiles and feelings of contentment. In School 1. Fine arts (painting, sculpture, and printmaking) 2. Homework strikes fear in the hearts of many parents. You may not remember facts you learned in school, like the significant battles of the civil war or the difference between a simile and a metaphor. Some things you learned are obsolete now: Pluto is no longer considered a planet. It was demoted in 2006. Use these smart prompts to direct your child’s work and teach important learning-management skills.

2. Do you understand what your teacher is asking you to do? Even a detailed assignment won’t help if your child doesn’t understand it. Make sure your child grasps the particulars before she begins, so she doesn’t waste time doing the wrong things. Consult with the teacher if unclear expectations are a perennial problem. 3. What materials will you need? Tracking down materials creates unnecessary distractions. Encourage kids to gather supplies before starting a project, so their work isn’t interrupted by a frantic search for the calculator, scissors or glue stick. Keep oft-needed items in a homework caddy for easy access. 4. Are there words or ideas you don’t know? Your child may get stuck because he doesn’t understand one or more crucial concepts. Help him identify these obstacles and search for remedial information. Encourage kids to find answers in their textbooks or online, rather than offering your interpretation. Students who can find information on their own become empowered learners. 5. Did you do similar problems in class? Most homework assignments are opportunities to practice skills kids learned at school. Direct your child to class notes and FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY worksheets for examples and review them together to refresh her memory. Kids should repeat the in-class procedures to solve homework problems. Teachers often require students to show work step-by-step.

6. What is the timeline for completing this assignment? Kids may fail to finish big projects because they wait until the last minute to begin. “Older children with assignments that will take several days or weeks to complete will need help in learning to manage those assignments,” says Donna Elder, M.A., a senior literacy specialist with the National Center for Family Literacy. Clarify steps your child must accomplish and write due dates on the calendar. Kids should make their own deadlines for initial steps, like buying supplies or doing library research. Project planning reduces stress for everyone. 7. How can we break this assignment or project into smaller chunks? Breaking assignments into segments can help kids maintain momentum. Divide a long list of objectives into subsets and use a timer to stay on task. It’s easier to read social studies for 15 minutes than to plod through an entire 35-page chapter. Short breaks between work periods let kids stretch and refresh. 8. Where can you find the answer? Textbook authors use section headings, bold words, text boxes, graphics and summaries to present material in an accessible way. Smart students use these tools to locate answers quickly and to organize information. Help your child use textbook cues to hone his search skills, take notes, and create his own study guides. Structured material is much easier to learn and remember than unrelated ideas.

9. How did you get your answer? Why did you answer this way? Monitor the homework process by checking kids’ work. “If there are errors, help kids self-correct by asking them to explain their logic or to show you what source of information they used,” says educational psychologist Jennifer Little, Ph.D., creator of Parents Teach Kids (www.parentsteachkids.com). If your child insists his wrong answer is right, Little says, “Let it go.” Errors show the teacher what needs to be covered (again) in class. 10. Where can you go to get extra help? Your child may be anxious that there isn’t an instructor standing by during homework. Let her know it is okay to reach out if she’s stuck. There’s no such thing as a stupid question. Do your best to keep a positive attitude during study time. “Homework is not a punishment,” says Elder, “It takes practice to learn new skills.” A warm hug or an encouraging word can make all the difference. 10 Quick Tips for Back-to-School Clothes Shopping By Denise Yearian

Youth apparel is a billion dollar industry that peaks each Fall with back-to-school clothes shopping. To get the biggest bang for your buck, consider these 10 tips: 1. Get a game plan. The most common mistake shoppers make is buying too much on impulse when faced with a large selection, or buying too much of the wrong thing. Before leaving home, know what your child needs and what you want to purchase. Otherwise you’ll be overwhelmed when you get to the stores. 2. Take inventory. Make a shopping list of the basic items needed based on the closet inventory. Though this list should be your guide, leave some room for flexibility. Your child may see an extra-special sweater that matches two or more basics in her wardrobe. 3. Establish a budget. While not every family can spend the average estimated $635 on back-to-school clothes, it is important that you decide before you go shopping what you can afford to spend. Equally important is to know your price point – are you going to spend $40 or $80 for that pair of jeans? 4. Consider gender differences. Statistics show that parents tend to spend more on girls’ clothing than on boys. This is due, in part, to girls’ higher interest in apparel. Girls’ clothing also tends to be slightly higher-priced than boys’ because of special details, such as lace, buttons, and fancy collars. 18

Our Kids Magazine | August 2016

5. Anticipate budget hikes. Keep in mind that as a child’s age increases, so does the price. As children move into adolescence, expect a gradual 25 percent hike in clothing prices. The combination of increased peer awareness and pure size—more fabric, construction, and fashion features— adds to the bottom line. Older children also tend to have a wider variety of social activities that require a more diverse wardrobe. 6. Spread it out & change it up. Since preteens and teens are in the throes of growth spurts, it may be best to spread purchases over a longer period of time. And don’t forget about alterations. Those too-little pants or jeans can be easily made into shorts or capris. 7. Look for value. While a budget is partly about establishing spending limits, it is also about getting the most value for your money. Since elementary-age kids, 6 to 11, tend to be rough and tumble, value often comes from buying quality, durable clothing with easy-to-care-for features. When assessing additions to your child’s wardrobe, consider durability, versatility, quality and comfort: Durability. Look for good enough quality to withstand repeated launderings while remaining colorfast and not shrinking. Check for reinforced stitching and well-sewn buttons and buttonholes. When purchasing knits, go with fabric that is more dense than loose, with limited stretching. Keep in mind growth features such as elastic waistbands, adjustable straps, and longer shirt tails. Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

Versatility. Staples, such as jumpers for girls and khakis for boys, are great dress-it-up or dress-it down pieces, as are various colored T-shirts. Mixing and matching with the basics—jeans, tops, and other pants or skirts—make a wardrobe work harder. Quality. Getting the most value for your money means budgeting for quality. Backpacks and jackets, for example, are likely candidates for heavy wear and tear. For items like these, it’s a good idea to buy brands you trust, Some items, such as backpacks, even come with warranties. Comfort. Children need to be comfortable when they are in a learning environment. When trying on clothes on in the dressing room, have your child sit, kneel, twist around, and bend over. Are the clothes tight anywhere? Do they ride up or fall down? Are they itchy? If so, it may distract your child while he or she is trying to learn. 8. Turn opposition into teachable moments. There may be times when your child wants something more than your budget allows, or an item you simply find inappropriate. If you have a game plan before leaving home, you and your child will know what the expectations are, and you may be able to avoid an argument. When conflicts do arise, seize the opportunity to discuss the reason for spending limits with your child. This is usually tied to parents’ personal convictions about what is and isn’t extravagant. It is an important

way to impart values and introduce ideas that will make the child a competent money manager as he or she grows up. 9. Consider a compromise. If the situation warrants, negotiate. This keeps fun and camaraderie in the picture as parents and kids plan for back-to-school. One idea is to set aside at least 10 percent of the overall budget for the unexpected. That way, when you encounter an item that isn’t essential, but extra special, your child has some freedom of choice. 10. Let them buy it. Another option is to let children use their own money to buy that “must-have” item. Kids these days are spending more and more of their own money on back-to-school clothes. If they find something they want and it isn’t in your budget, let them purchase it themselves. Overall, preparing a back-to-school wardrobe can be a fun and rewarding experience. The key is to plan ahead, establish a budget, and keep an open line of communication with your child. Then you can shop for style with savings in mind. -Denise Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children and four grandchildren.

Baby

A New Mom’s Guide to

Nursing in Public By Alyssa Chirco

You survived childbirth and learned the art of a successful latch, but if you have decided to breastfeed your baby, there is one final frontier you will need to conquer: the art of nursing in public. “Breastfed babies, especially newborns, nurse frequently,” says Holly Robinson, a Registered Nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. “No matter how well you plan, eventually you are going to find yourself out of the house with a hungry baby, so it’s important to be prepared.” The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for about the first six months, and continued breastfeeding – along with the introduction of complimentary solids – for one year or more. While not every mother chooses to breastfeed, those who do are likely to breastfeed longer and enjoy the experience more by learning to nurse in public with confidence and ease.

Practice Makes Perfect

For many new moms, breastfeeding presents enough of a challenge in the comfort of your own living room, so the thought of nursing in public – where other people might see you – can be terrifying. To boost your confidence, practice in front of a mirror so you can catch a glimpse of what others will (and will not) be able to see. When you are ready to venture out of the house for the first time, consider attending a local breastfeeding support 20

Our Kids Magazine | August 2016

group or grabbing coffee with a supportive friend. “I started small – going to the same coffee shop every day – for practice,” says breastfeeding mom Rhianna Mathias. “It was a shop I’d patronized a lot before baby, so I was familiar with the staff and felt comfortable there. Nursing in a group setting (for us a mom’s group in the early days) was also a comfortable place to practice and gain confidence.”

Find Your Comfort Zone

Some mothers feel totally at ease lifting their shirts to nourish their newborns, no matter where they happen to be. Others prefer a bit more privacy. No matter what your personal preference, be prepared when you head out in public by scoping out the setting as soon as you arrive. Look for a comfortable chair or bench where you will be able to sit and nurse when baby gets hungry. If you are dining out and prefer to breastfeed discreetly, ask for a corner booth or table so you can sit with your back to other patrons. Many shopping centers and museums also offer private nursing stations as a courtesy to breastfeeding mothers. “I found that corners were my friends because I could simply turn a bit to get her started,” says Melissa McAlpine of her experience nursing her daughter in public. “After the baby is latched on, there’s not really anything to see, so I could swivel back.” Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

Dress for Success

The right clothes and accessories make all the difference when you’re out in public and baby decides it is time for a meal. Wear a stretchy sports bra that can be pulled aside as needed, or learn how to unhook and lower the cups of your nursing bra with one hand. Many breastfeeding mothers like to pair a specially designed nursing tank top with a cardigan or loose blouse, since the top can be lifted up while the tank still covers your middle (where many of us have stretch marks we would prefer to keep hidden). Other mothers prefer to simply unbutton a few top buttons. A fussy baby is what draws attention, so wear clothes that make it easy to get baby latched on quickly. A few key accessories can also make nursing in public easier. Learn how to nurse while carrying baby in a sling or baby carrier. Try wearing a fashionable scarf or poncho that can double as a cover when baby is breastfeeding. Mom of two Melody Meiners is a fan of nursing covers, specifically the kind that have weights in one side or that tie around your neck and tent up. “It makes switching sides so much easier if you prefer to stay covered,” she says.

Know Your Rights

Keep in mind that, when it comes to nursing in public, the law is on your side. According to a database maintained by the National Conference of State Legislatures, forty-nine states have laws that specifically allow women to breastfeed

in any public or private location. Twenty-nine states exempt breastfeeding from public indecency laws. Knowing the law in your home state will help you respond more confidently in the unlikely instance that you are asked to stop or cover up. Also be aware that, sensationalized news stories aside, most people genuinely support your right to nurse in public, and mothers do it every day. “I never had any rude comments, in ten years of nursing, only supportive ones,” says breastfeeding veteran and mom of four Jennifer Heffern. Martine Samocha, who also breastfed four children, adds that “even though you think everyone is watching you, you are mostly being ignored.”

Fake It ‘Til You Make It If you are feeling nervous about breastfeeding your baby in public, you are not alone. “The first few times can seem uncomfortable,” admits mom of two Tammie Egloff, “but it gets easier.” You will gain confidence gradually, so in the early days and weeks, smile politely at passers-by and rest assured that the more you nurse in public, the less selfconscious you will become. “Eventually,” says Robinson, “you will appreciate the freedomwith knowing that, no matter where you are, you always have the perfect food ready to feed your baby.”Alyssa Chirco is a freelance journalist and mother of two. When her children were babies, she nursed them in restaurants, on airplanes and even at the beach.

San Antonio Botanical Garden

Winged Wonders highlights the Garden’s winged friends, especially monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. These winged wonders find sustenance for their life cycle here at the Garden, sensitizing all of us to the importance of habitat for those who “co-habit” with us. The Botanical Garden plays a significant role as an Official Monarch Waystation. San Antonio is the only Monarch Butterfly Champion City, taking the National Wildlife Federation Pledge in 2015 to increase pollinator habitat. Exhibit runs through October. Art in the Garden is a yearlong exhibition at the Garden for which Shotz has conceived a newly commissioned large-scale, freestanding steel sculpture, Scattering Screen. It features small mirrored circles that “reflect light and scatter the visible surroundings into thousands of tiny pieces,” per the artist. Exhibit runs through June 2017. Admission: $10 adults (14-64); $8 students, seniors, military; $7 children age 3-13; free for children under 3 and all members. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Witte

Splendor On The Range: American Indians And The Horse explores how life changed for American Indians after the Spanish brought the horse to North America in the 1500s. This fascinating exhibition, curated by Bruce Shackelford, looks at the culture and lifeways of tribes throughout the Plains and Southwest before and after the arrival of the horse. Exhibit runs through August 21. Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed is the first exhibition at the Witte’s new Mays Family Center and the largest exhibition to be brought to a San Antonio museum in the city’s history. In this 10,000 square foot exhibit, visitors will have the opportunity to learn how the Maya built their towering temples and created their intricate calendar system. There are hands-on activity stations where the whole family can build arches, decipher hieroglyphs and learn drilling techniques. Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed uses a combination of authentic artifacts along with multimedia and interactive, hands-on activities to reveal our deep ties to this astonishing civilization. Exhibit runs through September 5. Admission: $10 for adults (12-64); $9 for seniors (65+) and active duty military; $7 for children (4-11); and free for children ages 3 and younger and to all museum members. Coney Island: Visions of the American Dreamland, 1861–2008 celebrates the most iconic, uniquely American amusement park in the United States. Also called, “the People’s Playground,” Coney Island is a national cultural symbol that has inspired artists, musicians, novelists, poets, and filmmakers. From Coney Island’s beginning as a watering hole for the wealthy, through its transformation into an entertainment mecca for the masses, to the closing of Astroland Amusement Park following decades of urban decline, the exhibition explores 150 years of the lure of Coney Island. The modern American mass-culture industry was born at Coney Island, and the constant novelty of the resort made it a seductively liberating subject for artists. Taken together, these tableaux of wonder and menace, hope and despair, dreams and nightmares, become metaphors for the collective soul of a nation. Exhibit runs through September 11.

Parlour Games: Ruloff Kip’s Toy Theatre is an exhibit for kids of all ages. While vacationing at his Long Island country home in the winter of 1919, Ruloff Kip created a toy theatre for his young daughter, Elizabeth. The large, elaborate theatre features moving mechanisms, several working lighting schemes, and an array of set drops and cut-out characters, based on Kip’s house and family members. Long thought to be the work of artist Everett Shinn, recent research has uncovered interesting new perspectives on the theatre itself, as well as the fascinating background of its true creator and his family. Exhibit runs through February 5, 2017. Admission: $10 for adults (12-64); $5 for seniors (65+),

Mi Casa, Your Casa is a creative design installation conceived and created by contemporary Mexican designers Hector Esrawe and Ignacio Caden. The installation features ten red three-dimensional open frames in the shape of a house. Mi Casa, Your Casa invites the community to participate in the life of the Museum through recreation, social interaction, performances, and art-making. It is also a place of relaxation with hammocks. Mi Casa, Your Casa takes its inspiration from the home, a simple metaphor of warmth and welcoming, and also from the lively street markets or mercados of Latin America where human connections are made every day. This project explores how engagement with art and design can be extended beyond the Museum’s walls, bringing culture to everyone. Free. Exhibit runs through August 21. Admission: $10 for adults (12-64); $7 for seniors (65+); $5 for students and active duty military with I.D.; and free for children ages 12 and younger and to all museum members. Regular hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Tues, Fri and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
