hepherds, kings, scholars, fishermen, prophets, military generals and priests . . . the Bible has many, varied human writers. Some were recording historical events, giving spiritual and moral instruction or pronouncing judgement. They composed their works from palaces, prisons, the wilderness and places of exile while writing history, laws, poetry, prophecy and proverbs. But through it all, there is one true Author. Within the dynamic array of topics, styles and goals, the Bible displays one flawless storyline. Its words point unerringly to Christ, whose work on the cross was planned and promised by God—the true Author Keep this Book of of Scripture—before the world began. Every page, story and teaching fills out the Law always on the picture of our Saviour so we can see your lips; meditate Him all the more clearly. Our Daily Bread Ministries has been on it day and opening up the Bible with people from all night, so that you over the world for more than 85 years, may be careful helping them meet the God who cares. We pray this little booklet will allow you to do everything to develop and keep your own Bible written in it. reading habit too, so that you can live your life listening to the Author’s voice. JOSHUA 1:8 In Him, Your friends at Our Daily Bread Ministries

TODAY’S BIBLE READING | JOHN 5:31–40 ‘If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. There is another who testifies in my favour, and I know that his testimony about me is true. 33 ‘You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. 36 ‘I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing—testify that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. 39 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.’ 31 32

The Author of Everything These are the very Scriptures that testify about me. [ JOHN 5:39 ]

L

istening to BBC Radio 4, I was struck by something comedian Lee Mack said: “It’s quite odd that people like myself, in their forties, [are] happy to dismiss the Bible, but I’ve never read it. I always think that if an alien came down and you were the only person they met, and they said, ‘What’s life about? What’s earth about? Tell us everything,’ and you said, ‘Well, there’s a book here that purports to tell you everything.’ . . . And you go, ‘. . . I’ve never read it.’ It would be an odd thing wouldn’t it?” Indeed, the Bible tells the story of our world, from the very beginning (GENESIS 1:1) right through to the dramatic and triumphant end to come (REVELATION 21). Yet God’s Word actually does much more than just retell everything; it introduces the Author of everything. That’s what Jesus wanted the Jewish leaders to realise. They thought they were righteous simply because they knew the Scriptures. But Jesus observed: “These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life” (JOHN 5:39–40). To know the Bible’s story is to know the One it is about. As we seek to embrace the love of Jesus Christ and to understand His character, we’ll increasingly make sense of every passage, event and promise in the Bible. And we’ll find our place with Him within His story. CHRIS WALE REFLECT: How have you glimpsed Jesus throughout the Bible’s story? How might your studies and reflections deepen by asking of each passage: “What does this show me about Jesus?” PRAY: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word and for speaking

faithfully to me through it by Your Spirit. When the world doesn’t make sense, help me see more clearly through reflecting on Jesus.

The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword. Hebrews 4:12

5-Minute Bible Study: Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. 12

FOR REFLECTION: What things do we learn about the Word of God here? What does it do? What is the difference between the Word of God which is “alive and active” and ordinary books (V. 12)? What are the Bible’s words sharp enough to cut through (V. 12)? How do you see the Bible cutting through these things in your own life? How do you think God’s Word judges our thoughts and attitudes? How does knowing “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight” make you feel (V. 13)? How is it good news?

1 2 3 4 5

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, thank You that Your Word is alive. Even when I can’t see my own heart, Your Word gives light to my darkness. Thank You that I can trust You with every injustice and pain in my life; knowing that one day You will put all things right. Amen. WHERE NEXT? If you have time, read 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and think about all the things regular Bible study will achieve in your life! A BIBLE STUDY TAKE-AWAY! Test your feelings and emotions against other passages of the Bible. When its teaching makes us feel uncomfortable, we can prayerfully ask God to give us a clearer revelation of the truth so we can experience the freedom and joy He intends for us.

TODAY’S BIBLE READING | PSALM 23 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. 1

The Right Paths He guides me along the right paths. [ PSALM 23:3 ]

ix ducks waddled up the hill into the woods behind our home in the Lake District. Moments later, a ruckus of squawking and quacking brought five ducks scrambling back down the hill. They’d met a hungry fox. To my amazement, just a few hours later I saw the five ducks waddling back up that hill. Dashing outside, I rounded them up and led them to safety. Psalm 23 shows that we have a similar relationship with God; He is our Shepherd and we are His sheep. Sheep, like ducks, are not famous for their wisdom or clear sense of direction. As with them, left to ourselves, we are prone to wander to places that seem good to us, but may actually hold hungry foxes. The psalmist writes that the Good Shepherd always “guides me along the right paths” (PSALM 23:3). As we listen to His voice and follow where He leads, He provides our souls with good, nourishing refreshment (V. 3). Even when He takes us “through the darkest valley”, His presence is the comfort and reassurance we need (V. 4). Ducks, sheep, people—they all can find it hard to stick to the right paths. Just as I had to steer those ducks, Jesus takes the responsibility to guide us. We don’t have to figure everything out for ourselves; we need only to stay close to our Good Shepherd. DEBBI FRALICK REFLECT: What decisions do you face at the moment? How can you keep putting your trust in your Good Shepherd to lead you, rather than trying to figure things out for yourself? PRAY: Dear Lord, thank you for being the Good Shepherd to lead me in goodness and love all the days of my life. Please help me to trust You to take me along the right paths and to stay close to me.

TODAY’S BIBLE READING | MATTHEW 7:24–27 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. 24

Resilient Faith Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. [ MATTHEW 7:24 ]

T

owering dunes along the north shore of the lake put nearby homes at risk of sinking into shifting sands. Though residents tried moving mounds of sand in efforts to protect their homes, they watched helplessly as well-built houses were buried right before their eyes. As a local police officer oversaw the clean-up of a recently destroyed cottage, he affirmed the process couldn’t be prevented. No matter how hard homeowners tried to avoid the dangers of these unsteady embankments, the dunes simply couldn’t provide a strong foundational support. Jesus knew the futility of building a house on sand. After warning the disciples to be wary of false prophets, He assured them that loving obedience demonstrates wisdom (MATTHEW 7:15–23). He said that everyone who hears His words and “puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (V. 24). The one who hears God’s words and chooses not to put them into practice, however, is “like a foolish man who built his house on sand” (V. 26). When circumstances feel like shifting sands burying us under the weight of affliction or worries, we can place our hope in Christ, our Rock. He will help us develop resilient faith built on the unshakable foundation of His unchanging character. XOCHITL DIXON REFLECT: How does obedience demonstrate our trust in God?

In what areas of your life are you standing on the shifting sands of disobedience to Him?

PRAY: Jesus, please help me develop resilient faith. Empower me to demonstrate my trust through loving obedience to You.

My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises. Psalm 119:148

6 Ways to Develop (& Keep!) Your Own Bible Reading Habit it a priority: “Man shall not live on bread alone, 1 Make but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”

2 3 4 5 6

(MATTHEW 4:4). Just as we get wearied and feel unwell if we don’t eat, we will struggle spiritually if we’re not feeding our souls with the Bible. Choose a time and place: “When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen” (MATTHEW 5:6). Our time with God is just that: quality time when we can be alone with Him to reflect on His Word. Where might your special, secret place with God be? Share the journey: “[Speak] to one another with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit” (EPHESIANS 5:19). A great way to get into Bible reading is to get support from someone else. Who could help you develop this habit? Have a guide: We can really benefit from teachers and study guides; they will help us understand the various cultures and contexts in God’s Word, so we can get the most out of it. That’s what Our Daily Bread is all about; the writers open up the Bible with you each day to help you meet its Author. Meditate on it: “Blessed is the one . . . who mediates on his law day and night” (PSALM 1:1-2). Creating a Bible reading habit is more than just reading; it’s about learning to take what you read with you through your day so you can meditate (or ‘chew it over’ in your mind). This is where God often reveals the hidden truths of what we have read. Don’t give up: Our relationship with God isn’t dependent on getting everything right; He knows we won’t. But let’s ask Jesus to help us love and value His Word. Knowing God through it is incredibly exciting and rewarding. We’ll never regret the hard work involved in making it a bigger part of our lives!

TODAY’S BIBLE READING | 1 SAMUEL 3:1–12 The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions. 2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, ‘Here I am.’ 5 And he ran to Eli and said, ‘Here I am; you called me.’ But Eli said, ‘I did not call; go back and lie down.’ So he went and lay down. 6 Again the Lord called, ‘Samuel!’ And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, ‘Here I am; you called me.’ ‘My son,’ Eli said, ‘I did not call; go back and lie down.’ 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8 A third time the Lord called, ‘Samuel!’ And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, ‘Here I am; you called me.’ Then Eli realised that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, ‘Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”’ So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Then Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’ 11 And the Lord said to Samuel: ‘See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end.’ 1

Keep on Listening Speak, for your servant is listening. [ 1 SAMUEL 3:10 ]

G

randpa appeared at the bedroom door to look in on the two little girls. “I’ve told you twice already,” he said to my young daughter and her cousin, tucked up together in a double bed for their overnight sleepover. “You need to be quiet and go to sleep.” “But she keeps on talking,” my daughter protested. Her cousin shot back, “That’s because she keeps on listening.” The young boy Samuel kept on listening too. He’d been learning to serve God in the tabernacle but hadn’t encountered Him personally (1 SAMUEL 3:7). Not until the night he heard a voice calling his name. Samuel assumed it was his ageing mentor, Eli. But after three visits from the boy, Eli realised Samuel was hearing God and advised him what to do. So the next time Samuel heard the voice, he said, “Speak, for your servant is listening” (V. 10). Although the message was unpleasant to hear, Samuel obediently passed it on. In fact, he kept on listening to God, bringing his guidance and judgements to Israel, right into his old age. When we long to hear God, Samuel’s words of welcome and obedience help focus our attention. They prompt us to still our thoughts and to listen as we start praying or reading Scripture. They can also help us to pause and pay attention to God through our day. Be encouraged that God will speak to you too. ANNE LE TISSIER REFLECT: How do good listeners you know inspire your own attentive

listening to God? If you struggle to hear God’s voice, whom could you approach to help you nurture greater discernment? PRAY: Father, you have so much you want to say to me through

TODAY’S BIBLE READING | PROVERBS 2:1–5 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding— 3 indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 1

Hidden Treasure Search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord. [ PROVERBS 2:4–5 ]

M

y husband and I read in different ways. Since English is a second language for Tom, he has a tendency to read slowly, word-for-word. I often speed-read by skimming. But Tom retains more than I do. He can easily quote something he read a week ago, while my retention can evaporate seconds after I turn away from the screen or book. Skimming is also a problem when I’m reading the Bible—and not just the genealogies. I’m tempted to skim familiar passages, stories I’ve heard since I was a child or a psalm that is part of a familiar chorus. Proverbs 2 encourages us to make the effort to know God better by carefully seeking a heart of understanding. When we read the Bible carefully and invest time memorising Scripture, we absorb its truths more deeply (PROVERBS 2:1–2). Sometimes reading the Word aloud helps us to hear and understand the wisdom of God more fully. And when we pray the words of Scripture back to God and ask Him for “insight and understanding” (V. 3), we enjoy a conversation with the Author. We come to know God and His wisdom when we search for it with our whole heart. We find understanding when we seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure. CINDY HESS KASPER REFLECT: How can you make a habit of setting aside quality

time reading God’s Word and asking for His help to reveal the hidden treasures within each passage? PRAY: Dear Lord, help me to slow down and listen to what

You want to teach me through Your Word so I can be the person You want me to be.

Making Time for the Bible

T

he Bible is the most amazing book in the world. It’s not just a book; it’s a system of communication by Almighty God to His creation—us! It starts at the beginning of our world and finishes at the end. Inside is everything God wants us to know about Him, ourselves and life in general. It is alive, active, sharp, life-changing and the very foundation of our relationship with God. So how can we sink our roots deep into this living book to get the most out of it? 1. Get to know it. Learning the Bible is a bit like learning a language; it isn’t always super exciting, but before we know it, a whole new world has opened up to us! The key? Keep reading it! As you get to know the characters and stories better, the Bible will become like a map that helps you understand its central story, the world you live in and your own life. Why not get an audio version of the Bible and play it regularly while you’re driving, doing chores or resting! 2. Meditate on it. Sometimes when you read a bit of the Bible, you don’t get much out of it; either it doesn’t make sense, or it doesn’t seem particularly relevant. But don’t stop there! Take a bit and ‘chew it over’. Whether on a walk or sitting quietly, repeat what you’ve read in your mind, ask God to show you something important, and get ready to listen as you reflect on His Word during your day. 3. Study it. It’s not as hard it sounds! It comes down to three things: observe, interpret and apply. Observe: look closely at what is actually being said. Highlight lists, repeated words, times, places, actions—anything that stands out! Interpret: try to understand why it was said; what did it mean to those it was originally written to? How does it fit with surrounding passages or the story as a whole? Apply: this is where Scripture really comes to life! You make it personal when you ask: “How do the principles in this passage apply to my life and relationship with God?” The key in all this is making time for God to speak through His Word. How can you make regular Bible reading a habit of your life? Our Daily Bread Ministries would love to join you on this journey. For over fifty years we’ve been helping people in the UK and Europe open up the Bible to meet the God who cares. Follow @ourdailybreadeurope on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok for daily encouragements and verses from Scripture.

From

GENESIS Where did we come from? Why is there so much evil in the world? And why can’t we ever seem to find peace? The answers to some of life’s biggest questions are found in Genesis! Genesis tells the story of our world: God’s perfect creation, people’s rebellion against spiral that follows: the first murder, Him, and the downward lying and scamming, gang wars and riots, brothers turning on one another . . . a world full of selfishness. But it’s more than that; it’s also a story of hope. From the moment the world first goes wrong, God promises to send someone to rescue us; a hero who will put everything right. He starts by choosing Abraham to be the father of a special nation out of which the hero will eventually come. But Abraham is no saint; and his family has plenty of problems too! The stories in Genesis prove that God doesn’t need perfect people; Genesis is full of exciting, interestin He can use anybody. g and sometimes shocking stories. And it lays the base on which the rest of the Bible is built. This book is the beginning; the beginning of God’s world, the beginning of His rescue mission— and the beginning of the search for the One who can save us and fix our world. 6
