Yeti or not, here it comes A supersized new challenge in Newport will give people of all ages the chance to take part in a treasure hunt with a difference — and quite possibly dress up as bigfoot along the way. The first annual Super Awesome Scavenger Hunt In Newport, SASHIN for short, will see contestants tackling tough tasks, exploring local businesses and stretching their creative abilities in pursuit of great prizes. Participants will sign up in teams of two, which will then be combined by the Scavenger Hunt Overlords into teams of six. At least one person on each team of two must be 18 or over. A team meet and greet on Thursday, April 5, will give everyone a chance to meet their new teammates, come up with a team name and get a quick overview of the hunt. From that evening until Sunday, April 8, teams will race to complete as many tasks as possible, although be warned — organizers have packed the event to make it unlikely that any team will get through everything. Winners will be announced at a Friday, April 20, awards party, with the winning team treated to dinner with a mystery guest courtesy of Rogue Brewing as well as a pool party for 50 at the Newport Aquatic Center. Registration is open through Sunday, April 1, at https://goo.gl/MyYT6q or search for SASHIN at Eventbrite.com. For more information, call the Newport Recreation Center at 541-265-7783, email j.remillard@newportoregon.gov or check the SASHIN Facebook page at https://goo. gl/F4ZPeX.

TO BEACH THEIR OWN

Pick your stretch of sands for the Spring SOLVE cleanup Volunteers will take to the beaches this Saturday, March 24, for the SOLVE Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup, removing litter and marine debris washed in from winter storms. Held every spring and fall since 1986, this grassroots tradition has benefited both people and wildlife alike, supporting clean seas and healthy communities. Last year, SOLVE volunteers removed more than 82,000 pounds of trash — from a thousand-pound fishing net to the tiniest piece of plastic. “We’ve picked up everything, including a kitchen sink,” said Coral Cook, long-time SOLVE beach captain and Seaside resident. “It’s fun to see the children picking up little pieces of plastic and putting them in their small SOLVE bags. They’re always so proud!” The cleanup will run from 10 am to 1 pm at 45 beach cleanup locations from Fort Stevens State Park near Astoria to Harris Beach in Brookings. For a full list of sites, go to solveoregon.org or call 503844-9571 ext. 332. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. All cleanup supplies will be provided, but people who want to make the event more sustainable are encouraged to bring their own reusable bucket and work gloves. An old colander might also come in handy to sift the tide lines for tiny pieces of plastic.

And guests at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center near Yachats will have the chance to take part in a variety of activities from Saturday, March 24 through Saturday, March 31. Retired park ranger Michael Noack will present “Experiencing Gray Whales” at 11:30 am, Saturday, March 24, highlighting the history of these marine giants, while discussing whale watch techniques that have worked for him. Noack has been educating agency staff and the public about the natural world, especially Gray whales, for many years. He has trained whale watch volunteers and has been involved with whale research. Trained whale watch volunteers will also be on-hand every day during the week from 10 am to 1 pm, to share information and help visitors spot whales. The visitor center exhibits include a lifesize gray whale, bones and baleen from gray whales, huge jawbones from a blue whale and more. All activities are free, but a day-use fee or recreation pass is required within the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, located three miles south of Yachats. The visitor center is open daily, 10 am to 4 pm. The two will perform together as The B Side at the Hoffman Center for the Arts in a concert starting at 7 pm. Formed in 2011 in Walla Walla, Washington, the duo combines jazz standards, obscure rock, pop, a few show tunes and unique originals with a fun and playful presentation that fits just about anywhere. The band completed its first album, “Prince Charming” and performed its premiere to a soldout crowd at The GESA Power House Theater in Walla Walla in 2012. Music and memories The Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean will honor the memory of Resident Conductor David Ogden Stiers this weekend at a pair of concerts featuring music of the Easter season. Music Director Adam Flatt will begin the Saturday, March 24, and Sunday, March 25, concerts by leading the orchestra in a musical tribute to Stiers, the acclaimed actorturned-conductor who died on March 3. The concerts, the last in the 2017-18 season, will focus on the music of Easter, featuring with Haydn’s Symphony no. 26, “Lamentatione,” which incorporates a melody derived from an old plainsong chant of the Passion of Christ. The orchestra will then play “Good Friday Spell” from Wagner’s last opera, “Parsifal,” describing a moment of transfiguration in which the world is renewed and love and innocence are regained.

Guest clarinetist Narek Arutyunian will join the orchestra to play one of Mozart’s great final works, the “Clarinet Concerto K.622.” The recipient of the 2017 Leon Russianoff Memorial Award and Winner of the 2010 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Arutyunian was presented in debut recitals at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City and the Kennedy Center to rave reviews. The Washington Post described him as an artist who “reaches passionate depths with seemingly effortless technical prowess and beguiling sensitivity.” The concert will conclude with Liszt’s symphonic poem “Les Préludes,” a reflective piece inspired by the musings of his longtime confidant Princess Carolyne zu SaynWittgenstei, who asked: “What else is our life but a series of preludes to that

Formed in Israel, the group features Alexandra Kazovsky, Gershon Gerchikov and Jan Gruning on violin, with Amit Even-Tov on cello. The four moved to the United States in 2004 to continue their professional studies, graduating from the New England Conservatory’s prestigious Professional String Quartet Training Program in 2010. In 2014, the Ariel was named quartet-in-residence at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. They have won a number of international prizes including the Grand Prize at the 2006 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and first prize at the “Franz Schubert and the Music of Modernity” in Graz, Austria in 2003. The quartet recently won the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award and has toured extensively in Europe and the US, making their Carnegie Hall debt in 2015. Stand ready for Spring Whale Watch Week By Barbara B. Covell For the TODAY

O

f the many splendors on the Oregon Coast, few can match the power and graceful spectacle of the gray whale migration. Twice each year these mammoth mammals migrate through the Oregon coast on a 10,000 mile round trip trek to the calving lagoons of Baja, Mexico, then back to the cold feeding waters of the Bering Sea. The annual spring migration is celebrated here from March 24 to 31 as Whale Watch Week, with 24 designated viewing sites along the Oregon Coast. If you’ve never seen the gray whales blowing, breaching, spyhopping, or diving, this is the time to grab your binoculars and head to the coast. Gray whales typically travel close to shore, generally a few hundred yards, offering a show to please their human counterparts. “Whale Watching Spoken Here” is a program sponsored by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, where volunteers help visitors spot whales and share their knowledge and passion for these marine mammals. Volunteers complete a six-hour course taught by park rangers and a rotating panel of marine biologists. “They come to the Oregon Coast from places all over the US to participate in Whale Watch Week events in the winter and spring,” said Luke Parsons, interpretive ranger at the Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center. “We have nearly 275 active volunteers, staffing the designated sites everyday from 10 am to 1 pm, counting the whales and observing their feeding patterns.” How do you spot whales? Parsons has some tips. “When you first start looking for whales, use your eyes to scan the horizon and watch for the spout, or the blow,” he said. “The spout from a gray whale can be over 12 feet tall. Once you see a spout, bring your binoculars up and you should be able to see the next two or three spouts before the whale completes its dive. Gray whales have a fairly regular breathing pattern in which they will spout three or four times, then typically dive for about five

A Gray whale spyhopping at a tour boat

minutes. On the final spout, you will see them lift their head out of the water, and you may see them bring their tail out of the water.” Gray whales reach 45 feet in length and weigh 35 tons. Adult females generally are larger than males. Gray whales are baleen, not toothed, with a row of 130 to 180 baleen plates along each side of the upper gum line. Each piece of baleen is fringed inside the mouth and tapers from three inches wide at the gum line to nearly a point at its bottom. The fringes overlap to form an effective screen, necessary for their feeding. They are bottom feeders, filtering shrimp-like animals, while mud, sand and water pass between the baleen plates. When gray whales lift their tail flukes out of the water it is to propel them downward to the bottom for feeding. A deep dive is also known as a sounding or fluking. Upon resurfacing, they may blow five times to replenish their

oxygen supply. Breaching is when a whale launches out of the water, showing up to three quarters of its body. Scientists speculate it is either to remove parasites or a way for whales to communicate with each other. Whales have the largest brain of any animal on earth, showing their intelligence and curiosity by “spyhopping” or lifting their heads above the water. Gray whales are known to spyhop regularly when tour boats are near. So where are the best places to spot whales? “In my opinion, the whole central coast is the best place” Parsons said. “During the migration months, find yourself a park or a viewpoint where you are up high. I like Cape Disappointment, Ecola, Cape Meares, Cape Lookout, Cape Kiwanda, Cape Foulweather, Cape Perpetua, Umpqua Lighthouse, Face Rock, Battle Rock and Cape Ferrelo. From

these heights, you can see miles out to sea and if the weather is good, you can see dozens of whales.” “Another thing to consider is the time of day,” he added. “We recommend looking for whales in the morning when the sun is behind you, and typically there is less wind on the water.” During the summer feeding months (midspring to mid-fall), the 200 to 400 resident gray whales put on a daily show. “Depoe Bay is the place to be,” Parsons said. “We expect to see around 10 whales every day, very close to shore.” Whale watch excursions are available in Newport and Depoe Bay, offering the opportunity to view these gentle giants from a close vantage point. W

hen Gary Fromm, owner of the town of Otis, wanted pizza done just the way he likes it, this life-long entrepreneur did the only thing that made sense — he opened his own pizzeria. While that might seem excessive to some, bear in mind that Fromm is not the sort of person to do things by halves. For example, when he found himself in the market for commercial property in Otis a few years back, rather than settling for a single storefront or two, he bought the whole town. And now, as the driving force behind Otis Pizzeria, Fromm is on a mission to provide great food to locals as well as a warm welcome to visitors on their way to and from the coast. Located east of the junction between Highway 18 and Highway 101, just minutes from Lincoln City, Otis has long been the gateway to the Oregon Coast — and Fromm is intent on rolling out the red carpet with an eatery that serves up mouthwatering cuisine in generous portions. “We cover every inch of that pizza,” he said. “That’s our claim to fame; we are very generous with our toppings. Some of them are so big you have to eat them with a knife and fork. There’s so much you can’t pick it up.” Bestselling varieties include the timehonored Pepperoni as well as The Meat Pie, topped with Genoa salami, Canadian bacon, pepperoni and house-made Italian sausage; and The Otis Pizzeria Combo, which combines all the above with mushrooms, purple onions, black olives and mixed bell peppers. All the pizzas are served up thin and crispy, just the way Fromm learned to love them during his 50 years in Philadelphia.

At Oregon Coast Comic Con in Tillamook By Ann Powers

W

For the TODAY

ouldn’t it be great to escape the mundane grind of everyday life and bust out as a total badass for the weekend? Then channel your favorite superhero, gear up for some creative cosplay (short for costume play) and take in a rad dose of empowerment during the 2nd Annual Oregon Coast Comic Con, at the Tillamook Air Museum this weekend. The event celebrates fantasy and sci-fi fandom linked to comics, graphic novels, anime, video games, movies and TV — basically a pop culture convention where the nerd is heard. Alkali Layke, a popular Twitch Streamer, nationally known cosplayer and selfdescribed “equal opportunity geek with a multitude of fandoms,” is one of the many comic con VIPs scheduled for meet-andgreets during the two-day event. “There’s a lot of people who go to comic cons who don’t have the best social skills and maybe a lot of social anxiety,” she noted. “But we bond together over common interests and there’s a feeling of a certain level of competence and power. When I don the (cosplay) costume, I get this major rush I don’t get in everyday life.” This sequel to last year’s NorthWest Comic Con will feature celebrity guests, artists, cosplayers, cosplay karaoke, gaming, autographed merchandise, exhibits, panel discussions, raffles, free swag and incredible edibles from Sea Baron Fish and Chips, NE Creperie and Papa Bear’s Smoked Meats and Catering. For an added bonus, the convention will be held inside the Tillamook Air Museum’s massive 32,000-square-foot Hangar B, billed as the world’s largest clear-span wooden structure. “Surrounded by history and military airplanes we offer an event like no other,” said Oregon Coast Comic Con President Monty Elliott. “There will be more guests, more celebrities, more artists, more vendors, more food and more professional cosplay groups. It’s going to be an amazing event.” The family-friendly convention promises fandom freaks of all ages something to feel good about, said special guest Kenn Scott

Alkali Layke in her self-made Wonder Woman cosplay outfit.

Arthur Suydam will be among the comic book artists in attendance

— who portrayed Raphael in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. “I definitely think super heroes play a role

in providing positive role models for young people,” he said. “Whether it’s Spider Man, Captain America, Superman or even Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars films, they are all stories of individuals who, against initial odds, discover or are imbued with powers to combat evil in the world, and help society move forward.” Some of the other comic industry personalities on the guest list include Scott Allen of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” Vincent M. Ward from “TheWalking Dead,” Sandi Sellner from “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” and Eric Vale of “Dragonball Z.” Guests will also be able to meet comic book artists Arthur Suydam, Mike DeCarlo, Freddie Williams and Jeremy Colwell, who between them have worked on everything from “Marvel Zombies,” and DC’s “Batman,” to “He-Man” and “Thundercats.” And what gathering of geeks would be complete without a bit of the paranormal thrown in? Author and researcher, Dr. Richard Alan Miller, will share his knowledge and experience in metaphysics, ESP, altered states, self hypnosis and more. As an original black ops team member in the 1960s, Miller’s paranormal research began as a graduate physicist working 11 years with naval intelligence. He currently writes for Nexus Magazine, a bi-monthly alternative news publication. Now 74 years old, Miller acknowledged he’s a huge comics book fan and wants to share that joy with younger generations. “I collected comics in the ’50s and ’60s and I want to repay the favor,” he said. “Imagination is reality.” In addition, The Geek Embassy is on board to present a panel titled, “Capes and Baskets: What Can Fairy Tales Teach Us About Superheroes?” on Saturday at 2 pm in the event theater. The Oregon Coast Comic Con will run from 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday, March 24 and 25, at the Tillamook Air Museum. Tickets are $20 for Saturday, March 24, and $15 for Sunday, March 25, for ages 12 and up. Two-day weekend admission is $25 for ages 12 and up. Weekend admission for either day is $5 for kids aged 3 to 12. to buy tickets or for more information, call 503-354-5588 or go to oregoncoastcomiccon. com.

An evening of bakes and gains Bakers from throughout south Tillamook County will be bidding for glory this Saturday, March 24, as the South County Pie Night returns to Pacific City for its fourth year. The evening begins with a fun and lively pie auction featuring a gourmet lineup of pies that are as much a treat for the eyes as the taste buds — all going home with the highest bidders. Then, an all-you-can-eat pie feast will give everyone the chance to indulge in a variety of locally and lovingly homemade pies, including glutenfree and vegan varieties. This year’s celebration will also feature music by the multi-talented Donna Jose. In addition to pie and ice cream, coffee will be served and beer and

wine, provided by the Pelican Pub and Brewery, Twist Wine Company and Columbia Distributing, will be available for purchase. The event will run from 7 to 9 pm at the Kiawanda Community Center, 34600 Cape Kiwanda Drive, with doors opening at 6:30 pm. Admission is $10 at the door, reduced to $5 for children under 12. Advance tickets are available at Oregon Coast Bank in Pacific City. All proceeds from the event will benefit the South County Food Pantry, the Neskowin Farmers Market, the Pacific City Farmers Market and Food Roots. For more information, contact Lainie at office@foodrootsnw.org or 503-815-2800.
