In a bowl, mix together the bread crumbs, herbs, salt and grated cheese. Place the beaten eggs in a shallow dish. Dip chicken breasts into the egg, until evenly coated, then press firmly into the crumb mixture. Place on a buttered baking sheet and bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until cooked through. The chicken portions can be sliced into four and served with salad and spinach or tomato pasta tossed in melted Kerrygold Butter.

Good vibrations ÉIRE WE GO AGAIN Acclaimed vibraphonist Chuck Redd will take to the stage this Sunday, March 18, in the first of a new series of fund-raising concerts from Just Jazz. Jazz sweetheart Halie Loren will also take to the stage with her friends Matt Treder, Charlie Doggett, Sean Peterson and Rob Birdwell. Chuck Redd has been impressing audiences since 1980 when he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio at the age of 21. Joining Redd on piano is a local favorite Randy Porter, who recently received a Grammy nomination for a project he recorded with Nancy King. Completing the trio on bass and vocals is Nicki Parrott, a singer who has studied with bass greats Ray Brown, John Clayton and many more. Over her extensive career, Parrott has performed with notable musicians including Paul McCartney, Steve Miller and Tommy Emmanuel. Long a favorite with Oregon Coast audiences, Halie Loren achieved international success with her debut album, “They Ought to Write A Song” in 2008. She has since continued to release jazz albums and receive worldwide recognition and awards including topping the Japanese Jazz Billboard charts twice. Loren will be releasing her latest jazz album, “From the Wild Sky,” this April. The concert will begin at 2 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive Street. With music, dancing, great food and spirited conversation, St. Patrick’s Day often seems like too big of a celebration to squeeze into a single night. So, the Lincoln City Cultural Center is doubling the fun with a two-night party on Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17, offering a traditional Irish dinner along with music and dance performances. Head chef and events manager Judy Hardy will be dishing up homemade corned beef and cabbage, served with carrots and potatoes, and Irish soda bread, plus a surprise dessert. The entertainment will begin at 7 pm, led by Nora Sherwood and Gary Burman, who perform together (and with friends) as Pipedance. Sherwood is a retired Irish dance champion who competed and taught for the Bennett School of Irish Dance in Colorado before moving to the Oregon Coast. From ceili to sean-nós, and from set to step dance, she enjoys sharing her love of Irish dance and the lively music

that accompanies it, playing the bodhrán or Irish frame drum, as well as the penny whistle. Burman is a lifelong musician who performs on the Irish uilleann bagpipes, guitar, flutes and whistles. He is a sometime balladeer and a craftsman who builds his own pipes and enjoys playing on instruments he has built himself. Joining Burman and Sherwood this year are two musicians from Newberg: guitarist-bassist Seán Boyle and bodhrán player Ciarán O’hEidhin. Together, the foursome will provide the live music for two groups: the

accomplished Claddagh Dancers of Salem, and the Lincoln City sean-nós dancers. The latter meet every Monday night at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, and are working to grow the Oregon Coast “Celtic contingent.” Advance tickets are $30 for dinner and the show, with seating at 6 pm both nights. Show-only table seating is also available at $16 for adults or $5 for kids, with seating at 6:45 pm. Tickets are $2 more on the night of the show. Declare your interest A nightmarish vision of America torn apart by civil war will fill Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Arts this Saturday, March 17, when Omar El Akkad reads from his debut novel. El Akkad’s dystopian “American War” begins in 2075 during the second American Civil War, with Red and Blue states clashing over the need for sustainable energy. Set in a land ravaged by global warming, Omar El Akkad this ambitious debut encourages Western readers to put themselves in the shoes of the world’s displaced peoples. For 10 years El Akkad has led a double life, working as an international war reporter for Canada’s The Globe and Mail while writing fiction between midnight and 5 am. “American War” is the fourth

novel produced under this grueling schedule and the first to be published. As a reporter, El Akkad covered the war in Afghanistan, military trials at Guantánamo Bay, the Arab Spring protests in Egypt, the Black Lives Matter movement in Ferguson, Missouri, and the effects of climate change in places like Florida and Louisiana. “A lot of the world of the book is based on the things I saw while on those

assignments,” El Akkad says. “I like to say that a lot of what happened in this book happened; it just happened to people far away.” A graduate of Queen’s University, El Akkad is a recipient of the National Newspaper Award for investigative reporting for his coverage on the “Toronto 18” terrorism arrests. He has also received the Goff Penny Memorial Prize for Young Journalists, as well as three National Magazine Award honorable mentions. El Akkad’s reading will start at 7 pm and will be followed by a Q&A and an open mic where up to nine writers will read five minutes of their original work, with the optional theme of “revenge.” The Hoffman Center is located at 594 Laneda Avenue. In a new place, everything is fresh and if you’re lucky, in some way amazing or at least interesting. It’s a sad truth that after 17 years on the coast, I don’t see things the wayy I should. I take them for granted or just fail to notice. Recently, I drove to Pacific City for a travel story assignment and was surprised to find that after all the years of traveling 101, I couldn’t say the last time I’d noticed that spot on the highway where you look west and there, e, just for a moment, is the view of Haystack Rock. In truth, I only noticed it because as a travel writer, I know to open my eyes and collect as much detail and color as possible — which, if you think about it, is not a bad way too go through life. That’s how Mike Arsenault is seeing Rockaway Beach. He has had a second homee there for a few years, but it is only in the pastt year that he has called it home. And he sees it with fresh eyes, which has translated to a h passion for the place that’s absolutely contagious. It’s probably one of the most unspoiled beaches in this part of the Pacific Northwest.” He even waxes poetic about the food — one of the reasons he started the Facebook page for Rockaway Beach Foodies. “We now have over 500 members. We’ve done about 10 foodie events. Now, everyone is like, ‘When is the next event?’ It’s become a social event. People who are neighbors who have never met each other have met each other by coming to a foodie event. The most exciting thing is we are promoting and celebrating food, but it is also about bringing diverse communities together.” I’ve no doubt we’ll be hearing more about Rockaway Beach — about art shows and author readings and, who knows, maybe a new natatorium. histories, the publisher is dangling a hefty advance in front of him, plus a shot at Book of the Month and a Pulitzer Prize. The one fly in the ointment, though, is that Albert has to keep dreaming to finish the story. In this 1972 Jack Sharkey comedy, shenanigans and plot twists ensue as cash-strapped Victor weighs professional ethics against a chance for fame and fortune. Among the Theatre West regulars is Tricia Chandler, who brings Victor’s fiancée, Gabrielle Wingate, to life with a mix of good taste and good sportsmanship. Assistant director Alice Luchau does double duty as Albert’s grandmother, Dorthea Melnik, a saucy, savvy and slightly unhinged Reader’s Digest devotee. Brianna Smith, as Victor’s scavengerhunting neighbor, Jingle Jabonski, delivers a refreshing bit of free-spiritedness to the group of characters that drift in and out of Victor’s office. Directed by Theatre West stalwart Rich Emery, “Meanwhile, Back on the Couch” is an entertaining romp populated by a number of seasoned Theatre West actors. “I like having a large cast,” Emery said. “The more people you have, the more you can spread the wealth around.” Emery adds that one of the challenges of a play of this nature is to reflect the era in which it takes place. “We try to get the costumes as close to period as possible,” he said. In this case, that task fell to Patti Siberz and the cast. The set is also a period reflection. With Andrew Schmitz as stage manager, lights and sound by Kate Daschel, lighting design by Mark Akey, Victor’s office is colorful and rich. Reminders of the ‘70s are conjured in a vintage turntable stereo, wet bar (to which many visits are made), a ubiquitous rubber plant, and splashes of art, including a mobile and Rorschach-style mural by local artist Julie Fiedler. But amidst the retro vibe remains the central problem of Victor’s financial shortcomings. Will Albert finish his dream sequence? Will Victor hang onto his professional ethics or will he cash in on Albert’s dreams? Will Nurse Charlotte remain perpetually single? There’s only one way to discover the answers to these questions and others.

ne man’s dreams are another man’s potboiler in the latest production from Lincoln City’s Theatre West. Park Avenue psychoanalyst Victor Karleen has a cash flow problem. Between the lavish redecorating of his upscale New York combination apartment/office at the hands of his fiancée and his desire to take her on a honeymoon cruise in the Caribbean, his income just isn’t cutting it. What’s a shrink to do? Presented by Theatre West, “Meanwhile, Back on the Couch,” is a comedic farce in which Victor, played with a kind of edgy desperation by Don Bambrough, is confronted with a novel, yet ethically questionable strategy for boosting his bottom line. Initially, his plan is to publish a collection of case histories. His self-satisfied colleague Roy Terrigan (Steve Griffiths) recently did just that and is now raking in the royalties. But when his publisher and friend Parker Donnelly, portrayed by a pensive Bryan Kirsch, informs him that there is currently no market for such a book, and that he’d be better off penning a steamy novel, because — well — sex sells, his dreams start to disintegrate. Until a new patient lands on his couch and starts sharing some dreams of a different nature. Hapless Albert Brock, played in a hilarious turn by Ren Jacob, is unspeakably pedantic. Romantically frustrated, his repressed emotions emerge in the form of X-rated serial dreams — which he is helpfully jotting down on paper to aid in his analysis — one episode at a time. Praising him for his foresight, Victor asks sassy nurse, Charlotte Hennebon, a role shared by Patti Siberz and newcomer Cathye Wehr, to type up the notes for him, and doesn’t give them a second thought. But as Charlotte begins to read the notes,

See this, oar miss out A record-setting challenge to row across the Pacific Ocean will play out on Tuesday, March 20, as the Newport Chapter of Surfrider Foundation presents the second film in its Surf n’ Stewardship Film Series. “Losing Sight of Shore” tells the story of the Coxless Crew, a quartet of female rowers who set out to row from America to Australia, a trek never before completed by a team of four. In 2015, after years of planning, the Coxless Crew set off from San Francisco in a custom-made pink

ocean rowboat named Doris bound for Hawaii — the first checkpoint on their threelegged journey across the Pacific. Emmy-winning director Sarah Moshman documents this trying and triumphant expedition, occasionally catching up with the crew at their scheduled checkpoints, but mostly allowing team members to film their own experiences with a stock of weather-resistant GoPros. The result is part emotionally charged video journal, part

visually stunning wilderness documentary. The film follows the team as they face heartwrenching, awe-inspiring challenges, from dangerous storms, extreme heat and utter boredom to power outages and lack of food. In addition, they must battle the mental strain of unending repetition and the physical abuse of constantly rowing and sleeping only one or two hours at a time. And now a Lincoln City nonprofit aims to get surge-avoiding sprinters to hit the treadmills for a slower-moving emergency — homelessness. The Tsunami Run from Family Promise of Lincoln County gives people the chance to raise funds by running or walking on a treadmill for 30 minutes on Thursday, March 22. Designed for teams of three, the event will offer prizes for the team with the most donations raised as well as a team with the most miles recorded in the 30-minute time slot. All proceeds will support Family Promise in helping families experiencing homelessness get back on their feet and into their own homes again. “It’s time to Run Homelessness Out of Town,” declared Marilyn Salci, a member of the Family Promise board and fundraising committee.

Budding citizen-scientists are invited to build their skills at a Saturday, March 17, workshop at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. Participants will learn how to collect and report local data on precipitation and native plant seasonal changes using Oregon Season Tracker, an OSU Extension program that connects local community volunteers with OSU researchers studying weather and ecology. Volunteers collect measurements from their backyard, on their farms or woodlands and in schoolyards, with the data then shared with researchers at OSU and across the country. As well as tracking precipitation, volunteers record when the first leaves, flowers, fruits and leaf drop appear on native plants. Since the program

opened in 2015, more than a hundred OST rain stations have cropped up across the state, helping to fill in missing microclimate data in Oregon counties. Among those locations is the Oregon Coast Aquarium, which has put up rain gauges and marked significant native plant species to watch for seasonal changes. Volunteers spend about five minutes a day reporting precipitation, and about 15 minutes a week reporting plant observations. The training costs $40 and includes an approved rain gauge. Some scholarships are available. The workshop will run from 10 am to noon at 2820 SE Ferry Slip Road. The registration deadline is Friday, March 16. Sauté, study, scribble and splash in Tillamook Places are still available in a variety of creative spring classes for kids, offered by Tillamook’s OSU Extension Office. The Spring Break Cooking Day Camp will run from Monday, March 26, through Wednesday, March 28, teaching 4th to 6th graders how to homemade mac and cheese, from-scratch Hamburger Helper and spaghetti with meat sauce. Classes will run from 10 am to noon. Tuition is $30. The Forces of Nature Afterschool Program will teach 4th to 6th graders about the power of water, what causes earthquakes, why volcanos erupt and more. Classes will run from 3:30 to 5 pm each Thursday from April 12 to May 17. Tuition is $45. Running each Monday from April 9 through May 14, the Art Expression workshop will give kids in 4th grade and up the chance to explore traditional and modern techniques and materials as they improve their art skills. Classes run from 3:30 to 5 pm. Tuition is $30. Meanwhile the Art & Journaling workshop invites 6th to 8th graders to explore basic drawing and journaling concepts from 3:30 to 5 pm each Friday from April 6 through May 11. Tuition is $30. And the Downtown Mural Project gives 6th to 12th graders the chance to take part in everything from design through permitting to completion of a piece of public art. A purr-fect performance “Pete the Cat” will slink into the Lincoln City Cultural Center this Thursday and Friday, March 15 and 16, bringing a rock ‘n roll treat to audiences packed with hundreds of local schoolchildren. The Theatreworks USA musical, based on the popular series of children’s books by Kimberly and James Dean, will play to 750 Lincoln City students from kindergarten through fourth grades — with some tickets for the Friday, March 16, performances also available for the general public. Cultural center Executive Director Niki Price said that while some Theatreworks USA plays are designed for older kids, “Pete the Cat” is aimed squarely at pre-schoolers through third grade. “This is a great opportunity for parents to bring their children to the theater, for what might be their first sit-down performance,” she said. “These musicals have the power to ignite the imaginations of pre-readers and early readers, inspiring them to learn and laugh their way into literature.” When Pete the Cat gets caught rocking

out after bedtime, the cat-catcher sends him to live with the Biddle family to learn his manners — and boy, are they square. But for the groovy blue cat, life is an adventure no matter where you wind up, so the minute Pete walks in the door, he gets the whole family rocking. The whole family, that is, except for young Jimmy Biddle, the most organized second grader on Earth. As the end of school approaches, Jimmy has a lot of tests,\ and the last thing he needs is some groovy cat in his life, changing his family and turning everything upside down. But when Jimmy draws a blank in art class during the last week of school, it turns out Pete is the perfect friend to help him out. Together, they set out on a mission to help Jimmy conquer second grade art, and along the way, they both learn something new about inspiration. “Pete the Cat” features book and lyrics by Sarah Hammond and music by Will Aronson. It was originally directed and choreographed by Dan Knechtges, and

After a brief New York City area tour, “Pete the Cat” began its national tour in fall 2016, and has played in venues large and small across the country ever since. The Lincoln City performances are made possible through the Studio to School partnership, also known as Music is Instrumental, a grant-funded program, led by the Siletz Bay Music Festival and supported by the Oregon Community Foundation. Pete and co. will take to the stage at 9 am and 10:45 am on Friday, March 16, in the auditorium of the cultural center at 540 NE Hwy. 101.
