GARIBALDI - After a late start, crab season is well and truly underway, with plump Dungeness arriving by the thousand at docks all along the Oregon Coast. For most of these arrivals, their time in Oregon will be brief and largely uneventful. But for a select few, the glory and excitement of the Garibaldi Crab Races awaits, with crowds cheering as

crustacean steeds surge along the custom-made, six-lane track. Alas, whether they win or lose, all are destined for the pot, with the only consolation being that they will continue to bring joy in the form of rather delicious crab melts.

The turn of the natives The native plants of Oregon’s northwest coast will be the subject of a handson program at Tillamook County Pioneer Museum, this Saturday, March 10. In a talk entitled “Native Plants: Food Factories for Critters, Source of Life for Indigenous People,” Ginny Maffitt will explore the plants used by Pacific Northwest natives for clothing, food, medicines and housing. Maffitt and her husband, John, have lived in Sherwood for 25 years. Gardening on an acre has made it easy to grow many native plants that are interconnected with the local flora and fauna.

GET ON THE SALE TRAIL Registration is now open for the Great Oregon Coast Garage Sale, which will bring bargain hunters flocking to the Lincoln City area from Friday, April 20, through Sunday, April 22. Organized by the Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce, this annual event consists of around 100 garage sales and draws bargain hunters from not only surrounding areas but neighboring states as well. “We get calls at the chamber all year long inquiring about the garage sales,” said Chamber Office Manager Candace Paris. “Visitors aren’t the only ones that look forward to the garage sales — many residents take advantage of the coordinated event as it provides the opportunity to get some spring cleaning done and make some extra money.” Registration forms are available throughout March at the chamber office and

Secrets ana-lyze, in Lincoln City Saucy scribblings and madcap misuderstandings will collide on stage this weekend as Lincoln City’s Theatre West presents “Meanwhile, Back on the Couch,” a fast-paced comedy by Jack Sharkey. Psychiatrist Victor Karleen is financially pressed between the rental of his posh office apartment and his fiancée’s expensive tastes. Needing cash, Victor reluctantly takes on a new patient who, due to romantic frustration, is grinding out a rip-roaring sex novel. By mistake, his nurse gives the patient’s manuscript to a literary agent believing it to be Victor’s work. Suddenly Victor has an enormous

advance royalty check, a Book of the Month Club selection and a potential Pulitzer Prize. When he discovers that it is his patient’s confidences and not his clinical casebook that has saved the day, Victor determines to keep his patient crazy until he dreams up the final chapter. Directed by Rich Emery, the play stars Tricia Chandler as Gaby, Steve Griffiths as Roy, Don Bambrough as Victor, Bryan Kirsch as Parker, Ren Jacob as Albert, Alice Luchau as Dorothea and Brianna Smith as Jingle. Patti Siberz and Cathye Wehr share the role of Charlotte. Alice Luchau also serves as assistant director, with

Andrew Schmitz as stage manager and Kate Daschel on lights and sound. The play opens on Thursday, March 8, and runs through Saturday, March 31, with performances at 7:30 pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday and a 2 pm matinée on Sunday, March 25. Tickets, $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and students, and $10 for children 12 and under, are available by calling 541-994-5663. Please leave a message and someone will call you back. On regular performance days, the box office is open at 4 pm. Theatre West is located at 3536 SE Hwy. 101.

over, they’re in a lot worse shape than the crabs are going to be.” Others have been known to break bones and still return the following year to compete, according to Lions Club members. This year, the top three adult winners will proudly take home a trophy. The overall victor also gets a $100 cash prize and carries the prestigious title of Northwest Crab Racing Champion. Children placing first, second or third in the kids’ races win items appropriate to their age group. Prizes including fishing trips, gift certificates, hotel stays, chartered boat trips, artwork, boys’ and girls’ bicycles and more are donated by area merchants and residents. The local crab fleet provides the “athletes” and dozens of volunteers pitch in their time for the activities that give the coastal community’s economy a muchneeded boost during the tourism off-season. Garibaldi resident Richard Lakey volunteered at last year’s races with his daughter by selling drink and raffle tickets. He said it was crab-crazy fun and they look forward to offering their assistance again this year. “I had a blast,” Lakey said. “I definitely think it’s a good cause and there is something there for the entire family.” So much so, numerous attendees travel in from across the country, year after year and decade after decade, making Garibaldi’s zany and hilarious crab-racing tradition their own family tradition. “We’re expecting a lot of the same families that have been coming back for years,” Barnett said. “It’s going to be great.”

Cruising crustaceans take on the chutes, and a cause, in Garibaldi By Ann Powers For the TODAY

A

bout 500 pounds of Dungeness crabs will hit the race tracks and then the boiling pots - for the 33rd Annual Garibaldi Crab Races this weekend. Hosted by the Garibaldi Lions Club, the event will see the crawling crustaceans scurry down a six-lane track for back-to-back heats as they’re cheered on by their “human jockeys.” And while the two-legged competitors vie for prizes, their scuttling steeds … not so much. “We cook up the losers throughout the day,” quipped Lions Club President Kelly Barnett, who also owns The Spot seafood market in Garibaldi. “The winners get all the glory, and then they get cooked as well.” Proceeds from the must-see, smalltown event benefit sight and hearing assistance in the local community, as well as Christmas baskets for families in need. Organizers expect around 700 com-mitted crab racing fans to attend this year, netting about $7,000 for eye glasses, hearing aids, exams and goods for the giving season. “It really enables us to be generous to those who would just do without if we couldn’t help them,” said Jeff Coon, Lions Club sight and hearing assistance chairman. “It’s our main fundraiser and it makes a big difference in people’s lives.” According to the event’s rules, human participants can’t touch their crab counterparts. People can, however, coach their crawling contenders across the finish line first with verbal incentives (yelling, singing, cheering, sweet-talking, etc.), bribery, various scents and even psychic powers. They’re

also allowed to pound on the plywood track - and many do with some seriously silly, if not risky, enthusiasm.

“I’ve seen people bleeding down their arms and not even know it,” Barnett said. “By the time the race is

The crab races are scheduled from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday, March 10, and 11 am to 4 pm on Sunday, March 11, at the Old Mill Event Center, 210 Third Street in Garibaldi. HANGING CHAD and Egypyt... and Namibia... and Ghana, Botswana...

Wonders ranging from a wall of African masks to a crowd of mummy sculptures and a freestanding pyramid centerpiece will pack Lincoln City’s Chessman Gallery this Friday, March 9, as the students of St. James Santiago school unveil their African art exhibit. The “Creating to Learn” exhibit will open with a public reception from 5 to 7 pm, offering snacks, beverages and a chance to chat with the student artists and their teachers. The artwork featured in this exhibit shows that the spirit of creativity is alive and well at Lincoln City’s St. James Santiago School. Teachers at the non-profit K-6 elementary know the creative arts are fundamental to learning, so they integrate visual, musical and dramatic arts across the school curriculum. This exhibit of student projects from the 2017-18 school year showcases the school’s current study of Africa through a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, writing, scientific

illustration, paper sculpture, clay, weaving and quilting. Art by the creative adult school community that supports student learning is also on display. In the tradition of Episcopal schools, St. James Santiago combines a strong academic and moral foundation in a supportive, child-centered atmosphere. Based at St. James Santiago Episcopal Church, the school offers small, multi-age classrooms and nurturing teachers to create an inclusive, structured environment for learning. A full-day kindergarten program provides a comprehensive social and academic start with time and space for asking questions, developing skills and learning through play. Music, drama, art, social studies and science studies round out the primary focus on core skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Frequent walking tours to city and nature sites and field trips bring learning to life. Art, music, drama and frequent presentations of

student learning are very important parts of the curriculum at St. James Santiago. Teachers Amy White and Eric Simpson lead active music classes twice a week and students perform publicly several times a year. Twice a week, students learn basic techniques and work on open-ended projects in art with teacher Jenny Donnell. Meanwhile, weekly drama classes with teacher Kaline

Klaas become the training ground for two public drama presentations each year. “Creating to Learn” will be on display through April 9 at the Chessman Gallery, located inside the Lincoln City Cultural Center at 540 NE Hwy. 101, available to view from 10 am to 4 pm daily except Tuesdays. For more information, call 541-994-9994, or go to lincolncity-culturalcenter.org.

Mounted in pride of place Throughout March Lincoln City’s Beachstone Gallery will be showcasing original works by local artist Kathy Cope. Cope, from Lincoln City, works in a variety of media and is largely self-taught. “I always admired and envied people who could actually paint a picture and have it look like something,”

she said. “It wasn’t until I retired that I was able to try it myself. With the help of Bob Ross and a number of ‘Joy of Painting’ videos, I produced my first paintings and was hooked!” Since then, Cope has experimented with many different techniques, mediums and styles.

“I have enjoyed everything I tried,” she said. “but find myself drawn to colorful paintings with somewhat stylized subject matter.” The gallery is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm at 620 NE Hwy. 101, with parking at the rear of the building. For information about art classes, go to www.asaart.net.

SPRING IS IN THE ARIAS March and April will bring a host of opera gems to the big screen in Newport, as the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts presents the 2017-18 season of The Met Opera Live in HD. Spring screenings begin this Saturday, March 10, with “Semiramide,” Rossini’s masterpiece of dazzling vocal fireworks, making its first Met appearance in nearly 25 years, with Maurizio Benini on the podium. The all-star bel canto cast features Angela Meade in the title role of the murderous Queen of Babylon, who squares off in breathtaking duets with Arsace, sung by Elizabeth DeShong. Javier Camarena, Ildar Abdrazakov and Ryan Speedo Green complete a stellar cast. Hosted by North Coast Opera Lovers, the screening begins at 10 am at the Newport Performing Arts Center. Next up, on Saturday, March 17, is Bartlett Sher’s production of “L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love),” a charming tale with deft comedic timing, but also emotionally revealing. Pretty Yende debuts a new role at the Met as the feisty Adina, opposite Matthew Polenzani, who enthralled Met audiences as Nemorino in 2013 with his ravishing “Una furtiva lagrima.” Domingo Hindoyan conducts the production, which is hosted by Gloria Hutchins. The screening will begin at 9 am. On Saturday, March 31, audiences can enjoy Mozart’s opera buffa “Così fan Tutte,” which translates roughly as “Women are Like That.” A winning cast comes together for Phelim McDermott’s clever vision, set in a carnival-esque environment inspired by 1950s Coney Island. Christopher Maltman stars as Don Alfonso, with Tony Awardwinner Kelli O’Hara as Despina, alongside Amanda Majeski, Serena Malfi, Ben Bliss and Adam Plachetka as the pairs of young lovers who test each other’s faithfulness. David Robertson conducts in a screening that will start at 10 am. Plácido Domingo adds yet another role to his legendary Met career in the rarely performed Verdi gem “Luisa Miller,” which will grace the Newport screen on Saturday,

Joyce DiDonato stars in the title role in “Cendrillon,” with Alice Coote as Prince Charming

Matthew Polenzani and Pretty Yende in”L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love)”

April 14. Conducted by Bertrand de Billy, this heart-wrenching tragedy of fatherly love stars Sonya Yoncheva in the title role opposite Piotr Beczała in the first Met performances of the opera in more than 10 years. Hosted by Dorothy Black Crow, the screening will begin at 9:30 am. The spring offerings will conclude on Saturday, April 28, with a screening of “Cendrillon,” Massenet’s sumptuous take on the Cinderella story, enjoying its first-ever performance at the Met. Joyce DiDonato stars in the title role with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote as Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the fairy godmother and Stephanie Blythe as the imperious Madame de la Haltière. Bertrand de Billy conducts Laurent Pelly’s imaginative storybook production, with the screening hosted by Catherine Rickbone and starting at 10 am. General admission tickets are $21 for adults, $18 for seniors and $10 for students. Tickets are available at coastarts.org, at the PAC box office, 777 W. Olive Street, or by calling 541-265-2787.
