eniors without a vehicle have one less thing to worry about. Primary Care Physicians of Florida (PCPFL) offer its patients free round-trip transportation to any of their 11 locations. They also make house calls to care for the senior population which is a primary focus of their growing practice. The practice opened its doors in 1977 with only one physician. Fast forward 4 decades, and they now offer eleven convenient locations from Aventura to Margate, with free transportation service to all locations making it easy for patients to see any of their specialists. The PCPFL team strives to achieve excellence in every aspect of the patient healthcare process, from the preliminary screening to ongoing treatment, maintenance and support. They want the medical experience to be easy and flexible while providing the best possible patient care for everyone that visits anyone of their practices. A full line of Primary Care Specialties, including Geriatric Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine are all offered creating a convenient one-stop office for all their patients’ medical needs. Founding physician Moises Issa, M.D. F.A.C.S.G., answered some commonly asked questions about his growing practice.

Where are you located? We have an office in the Westside Medical Plaza in Plantation, two in Hollywood, two in Pembroke Pines, and others in Davie, Aventura, Sunrise, Coral Springs, Margate, and our newest in Lauderdale Lakes.

What specialties does your practice offer? We have a variety of specialists, including the areas of dermatology, cardiology, optometry, ophthalmology, podiatry, gastroenterology, and endocrinology. One trend we see in South Florida is the aging population, how is PCPFL adapting to this? We especially cater to the senior population by providing a ride to any one of our offices, offering the Silver Sneakers fitness program, treating age-related medical issues or making house calls. We see patients as young as 12 years old to those celebrating centennial birthdays.

It’s “Flu Season”, do you recommend vaccinations? We recommend flu vaccines to all our patients, especially our seniors. Flu vaccines are available in all our offices six days a week. We accept most Medicare Advantage plans as well as all major insurance companies in South Florida. Do you treat diabetics? We are proud of our diabetic testing and clinical research. njoy the ultimate tribute to legendary rock bands Journey and Styx, when the third season of the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series kicks off on Saturday, December 2nd with Majesty of Rock. Don Decker, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation, believes this show will appeal to an audience of all ages. “These two bands have a number of popular hits that are known not only to the adults in the community who followed 70’s and 80’s music, but to their kids too who have heard these songs reborn on shows like The Voice, American Idol and others.” Tribute bands Chain Reaction and Forever Styx will perform Majesty of Rock. The concert playlist will likely include Styx songs like Come Sail Away, Mr. Roboto and Lady, while Journey ballads such as Don’t Stop Believin’, Faithfully and Open Arms will bring back memories. Decker says he and his staff have enjoyed planning the WestonNights concert series knowing that it is something the community looks forward to each year. “We believe we have built anticipation for fun nights that will

appeal to Weston families looking for a reason to stay in town instead of fighting traffic, parking fees and crowds in Fort Lauderdale and Miami.” While the bands scheduled for the spring shows have not yet been announced, Decker promises the remainder of the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series “will be sure to rock the park.” Mark your calendar for Saturday, February 3rd and Saturday, March 10th. All concerts take place from 7-10pm at the event stage in Weston Regional Park. The park’s largest playground will be open to entertain children before the concert. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets to sit back and enjoy the music under the stars. A variety of food offerings will be available or guests are welcome to bring picnic dinners. Alcohol is not permitted, but Decker says new this year will be the opportunity to purchase adult beverages from park vendors. he Weston Art Guild has been busy preparing for two shows this month – its annual Juried Show and the Fort Lauderdale Home Show. Weston is home to many talented professional artists. Their work will be on display at the Weston Art Guild’s 9th Annual Juried Show. It runs November 1st through December 29th at the Angel Wings in the Sky by Weston Branch Library. Steve Romero (photography) The free exhibit will feature approximately 50 pieces of original artwork by Guild members in a variety of genres, including oils, acrylics, watercolors, photography and mixed media. In addition, this is the first year Cypress Bay High School has been invited to participate. Four student artists will have their work featured. This is a juried show and awards will be presented at a reception on Puffin Offspring by Becky Monday, November 13th from 6-7:30pm Blackwood (mixed media) in the library’s multi-purpose room. The awards reception is open to the public and is a wonderful chance to meet the artists and discuss their techniques and inspiration. unday, December 10th will be a day of health and wellness in Weston. The morning begins bright and early with the Rotary Club of Weston’s 20th annual Run For Tomorrow followed by a family-friendly Fun and Health Festival. Run Chairman Jesus Sanchez says this year the event is even more special than ever. “This is the 20th anniversary of this Weston run, walk, and health and fun fest, so we could say it is more than ever an institution for runners and the community. With thousands of participants, it has become the largest run and wellness event in the City of Weston.” The USATF certified 5K and half-marathon race event is Weston Rotary’s primary annual charity fundraiser. Last year’s Run For Tomorrow raised more than $60,000 for worthy Weston Rotary Club charities and service projects and organizers are hoping to raise even more this year. You can make a difference in the community today by participating in the Run For Tomorrow. Proceeds will support local charities such as Habitat for Humanity, Harvest Drive, Hope Outreach, LifeNet4Families, Sandy Nininger Jr. State Veterans’ Nursing Home, the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center, as well as Rotary International’s fight to end polio. In addition, part of the proceeds from this year’s race will be donated to the Rotary’s Robbins fund, which was established to support hurricane victims. Registration is now open for both races. Preregistration is $35 for the 5K and $50 for the halfmarathon. Race day registration is $45 for the 5K and $65 for the half-marathon. All runners will receive a premium Dri-Fit shirt, goodie bag, free breakfast and newly designed die-cast medals. Winners’ medals will be awarded to the top finishers in several age categories.

There will be changes this year to the post-race health and wellness event. The Fun and Health Festival, which runs from 9am-1pm, is free to attend and open to the entire community; race participation is not required. It will feature fitness obstacle courses for young and old, concerts, a DJ, bounce houses, free massages, raffles, and multiple other activities presented by vendors and businesses from in and around Weston. In addition, the BSO Police and Fire Rescue departments and members of the Weston CERT team will be on hand to provide educational information on health and safety topics.

Harvest Drive Accelerates into High Gear as Holidays Approach COMMUNITY NEWS

magine a Thanksgiving dinner without roasted turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes. Sadly, that’s a reality for families throughout Broward County, including right here in Weston, who don’t have the money to purchase the traditional feast. Thankfully, Harvest Drive donations will help put food on the table for about 2,400 families this Thanksgiving, providing meals for 10,000 people. This is no easy task. Harvest Drive Inc. Founder Renee Herman credits her student volunteers for making the Harvest Drive possible each year, and for continually expanding its outreach. This year 200 schools will participate, including every Weston school. Cypress Bay High School is one of Harvest Drive’s 15 distribution sites. It will help fulfill the needs of 75-100 families here in Weston, along with another 75 families at a benefactor school in East Fort Lauderdale. Recipient families receive ten grocery bags filled with food and basic household necessities, along with a gift card to purchase perishable items such as a turkey for their holiday meal. “The Cypress Bay students do an extraordinary job, there is no other word to describe their dedication, enthusiasm and drive,” shares Herman, noting that she is continually amazed at how students throughout Broward County embrace this project year after year, helping collect, sort and distribute tens of thousands of grocery items to needy families each holiday season. “These children are so inspiring. They truly want to help and do whatever is within their means to make Harvest Drive happen each year. They are the ones who keep us going.” Of course, Harvest Drive would not be successful without the support of the community as well. This includes individuals who donate food items as well as corporate, civic and community groups who step up for the cause. “Hunger is not just at the holidays, it’s year-round,” states Herman. “That’s why we started our Helping Hands Box program last year. Harvest Drive orders the food and one of our ‘partner’ organizations help pack 144 boxes which are delivered the next day to families in need right here in our community. Temple Dor Dorim will be packing boxes next month.” But this month, Herman is calling on all her Weston neighbors to support Harvest Drive Founder Renee Herman Harvest Drive by donating non-perwith sons, Jonathan and Adam, and ishable items for Thanksgiving dinner, Rep. In addition, keep an eye out for Harvest Drive Collection Days. Here in Weston, Cypress Bay students will be stationed at different Publix supermarkets throughout the community collecting donations. “Why not take advantage of Publix BOGO deals? Buy one item for you and donate the second to Harvest Drive,” suggests Herman. “ She also reminds people that we were very fortunate to escape the brunt of Hurricane Irma’s impact. “Please consider sharing our blessing by donating your unused hurricane supplies. One can of soup can help make a meal for a family in need.” Herman says donations are also needed for the Harvest Boutique. This year they are in desperate need of boys clothing, especially for ages four to 13, as well as gently used toys, games and children’s books. Food and merchandise donations can be delivered to Western High School on Harvest Drive Community Drop-off Day, which is on Friday, November 17th, from 3-10pm. Volunteers will be on hand to help unload your car. Another way you can help support Harvest Drive and is by donating a frozen turkey during the Florida Panthers’ Turkey Drive at the BB&T Center. For every turkey donated, supporters will receive two tickets to an upcoming Panthers home game. arvest Drive is celebrating its 25th anniversary. It started as a simple canned good drive at Country Isles Elementary School, but over the years has evolved into a county-wide program encompassing almost every single Broward County Public School. Despite its enormous growth, Harvest Drive remains true to its roots. “Since day one, our mission has always been to teach children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others,” states

Harvest Drive Inc. Founder Renee Herman. She says in the beginning their goal was really quite simple – to help families within the school. “We thought there were families in need, so we went to the school to ask if we could help by organizing a food drive.” Herman clearly remembers those early years, when she and other parent volunteers would bag donations right there in the Country Isles cafeteria. “We took the Student Council students to Publix to buy the turkeys.” Over time, the Harvest Drive expanded, to the point where it outgrew its home at Country Isles. At that point, it was serving over 200 families in the Weston, Davie, Sunrise and unincorporated Broward area, but the need was much greater. “Western High School contacted

us and asked us to relocate there,” states Herman. “In our 16th year, we opened at Western and it’s been our flagship site ever since. Today we run 15 sites throughout Broward County and have more than 200 schools participating in Harvest Drive.” Despite its enormous growth, Herman says to this day children remain at the heart of Harvest Drive. “We started as a way to teach kids to give back. That’s what we are doing every single day. Harvest Drive is a unique opportunity to change a child’s life – both the givers and the receivers – and that’s incredible!” Although Harvest Drive is now far-reaching, serving more than 2,400 families each Thanksgiving, as well as running year-round food banks at two schools, Herman says it’s still a grass-roots effort run by her and a handful of volunteers. “We are the only charitable organization that is truly all-volunteer,” brags Herman. “We have no overhead. All donations go right back into the community helping those in need.”

Weston Welcomes Back Mayors’ Chess Challenge COMMUNITY NEWS

he City of Weston will once again host the Mayors’ Chess Challenge. On Saturday, December 9th, hundreds of players of all ages and skill levels from throughout Broward County are expected to come together to enjoy a friendly game of chess. This is the third year of the Mayors’ Chess Challenge. It was started by Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan to promote scholastic chess and its academic benefits. It has grown over the years and now 19 municipalities take part in the county-wide program, with multiple cities hosting each month from September through May. Mayor Daniel Stermer says he

is excited to welcome this open competition back to Weston. It is an opportunity for novices, experts and all ranges in-between to join in the fun. “One of the great achievements of the Mayors’ Chess Challenge is there are no barriers due to age, physical ability, or economic status,” states Mayor Stermer. “Chess brings students of all ages and areas of the county together with adults of all backgrounds and careers for a great interchange. Chess breaks down barriers and benefits students with critical thinking skills and focus that they will carry with them their entire lives.”

The Mayor is busy brushing up on his chess moves. “Playing against kids is always a joy and honestly a true challenge!” He will be joined by members of the City Commission, BSO officers, and principals from Weston schools.

The Mayors’ Chess Challenge is a series of monthly challenges hosted by mayors, other elected officials and community leaders throughout Broward County. he City of Weston has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its comprehensive annual financial report for the Fiscal Year ending September 30, 2016. This prestigious award, presented by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada, is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. This is the 19th consecutive year the City has received this award. For the City of Weston to consistently earn the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting represents a significant accomplishment by the Weston Finance Department. The award was presented to Accounting Manager Cindy Tao, but is shared as a collective effort with Dana Sampson, accounts receivable, and Ana Rodriguez, accounts payable, staff members. “Their collective diligence, dedication and professionalism is a constant source of pride for the City,”

ovember and the Thanksgiving holidays are a time of reflection and a time of giving thanks. While each year we are thankful, this year hopefully more so. It takes but a moment to look at the devastation of neighboring counties, states, countries and islands, which very easily could have been us. We should be forever grateful that in this hurricane season we were spared severe destruction. Landscaping can and will be replaced and minor roof damage will be repaired. Let us give thanks for what we have, for what we did not encounter, and help those truly in need of which there are many. Being the community that Weston is, each Thanksgiving we step up and help those in our own neighborhood with food insecurity. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Harvest Drive, a fundraising and food gathering effort working with the Broward County Public School System as well as private schools, churches, temples and community organizations, will provide a complete Thanksgiving meal and a week’s worth of groceries and necessities to over 2,300 families across Broward County, including families in Weston. Harvest Drive was initiated at Country Isles Elementary School right here in Weston. We encourage you to do what you can, if you can, to help children help other children in need. ovember begins the holiday season and the season of giving. Floridians are extremely generous and give of themselves for those whom we think are truly in need. Charities depend on the generosity of donors to support them for various causes and purposes. Many charitable organizations use your donations wisely; however, some may misrepresent their fundraising intentions or solicit for phony causes. Keep these tips in mind before making a donation.

Watch Out for Scams

Scammers take advantage of people by pretending to be a real charity in order to commit fraud. Frequently, bogus charities will exploit a recent natural disaster or tragedy, promising to use the donations to aid victims. It is important not to judge a charity solely on its name. Many organizations may use names similar to well-known charities and organizations.

Check Out a Charity Before Donating

Ask the charity or organization why it is asking for donations and what purpose will be served. Florida law gives the prospective donor the right to request and receive a copy of a charity’s financial report before donating. You can also visit our online Gift Givers’ Guide to view a charity’s financial information and current registration status, or call 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352). Be aware that many telephone appeals for funds are made by paid solicitors, not volunteers. The solicitors often work for a for-profit firm hired by the organization. Always obtain and save a printed copy of your donation or a receipt showing the amount of the contribution. If this is important to you, ask about the organization’s federal and state eligibility for receiving tax deductible donations. Typically, such donations fall under Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3). All charities soliciting within the State of Florida (excluding religious, educational, political and governmental agencies) are required to register and file financial information with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. outheast Florida was very fortunate to not get a direct impact from Hurricane Irma. Even so, the effects of Irma were felt throughout our area and still left significant damage to some neighborhoods. Safety is everyone’s top priority during and after a storm. Next comes the assessment of your property. So, what can you do to ensure your property is safe and ready to be listed? Here are a few tips to help you through the process. ▸▸ Inspection - Take a walk in and outside of your home to see if there is any major damage that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. If you sustained any type of flooding proceed with caution as there may also be downed power lines and debris floating around. Any significant damage should be assessed by an adjuster. If you haven’t already, or if it’s been a while, look over your insurance policy for coverage information. ▸▸ Mortgage - In the event of a hurricane, or if your home is in a federal disaster area, your lender may have deferment or forbearance options depending on your lender. Some lenders will defer your payments for up to three months with no penalties. Check with your lender for further options. ▸▸ Curb Appeal - Once your home is safe enough to walk around, it’s time to start clearing debris from your property. Post Irma, most properties in the area had uprooted trees and downed fences. You will want to make sure your sidewalks are also clear of debris. Some homeowner’s associations or city ordinances will require pressure cleaning of sidewalks and driveways. In some instances, painting of your home may also be required. The City and HOA will usually allow enough time to tend to these matters as long as there are no safety violations. Getting your home back in order and back to a daily routine is important after a storm. These circumstances can cause life to be stressful, but as long as you have done everything to prepare before, during, and after the storm the process should be easier to deal with. he kitchen is the heart of any home, especially during the holidays. Children also love to be involved in the holiday meal preparation. Combined with so much activity and people in the home, it is no wonder that Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment, according to the National Fire Protection Association. The frequency of cooking fires nearly doubles on Thanksgiving Day when compared to any other day of the year. Cooking fires, furthermore, are the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, unattended cooking is by far the leading contributing factor in home cooking fires. By following some simple safety tips, you can reduce your family’s chances of an accidental cooking fire this holiday season. ▸▸ Before you cook that holiday meal, be sure that the oven and stovetop are clean, free of grease and are in good working order. ▸▸ Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food. With the normal chaos of preparing a large meal for family and friends, it is easy to get distracted and walk away from your stove. If you must leave the kitchen even for a short time, turn off the stove top. ▸▸ Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently. Use a timer to remind you that the oven is on. ▸▸ Pot holders, oven mitts, wooden and plastic utensils, paper and plastic bags, food packaging, and towels are all flammable. Keep these items away from your stove top. ▸▸ Keep pot and pan handles facing in to prevent children from tipping them over. Hot food and liquids that spill onto a child can cause life threatening burn injuries. ▸▸ Do not wear loose clothing while you are cooking. Your sleeves can easily ignite on a hot stovetop. If your clothes catch fire: stop, drop, and roll! Stop immediately, drop to the ground, and cover your face with your hands. Roll over repeatedly to put out the fire. Call 9-1-1, then cool any burns with cool water for three to five minutes. ▸▸ If you are planning on deep frying a turkey, make sure you do it outside on a flat, level surface at least ten feet away from your home. Always make sure your turkey is completely thawed. Placing a frozen turkey in a hot oil fryer can cause an instantaneous overflowing of boiling oil that can easily ignite, causing significant burn injuries. ▸▸ Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen that is rated for all types of fires. These extinguishers can be purchased at most hardware and home improvement stores. ▸▸ Lastly, make sure that you have smoke detectors installed on every level of your home, near your kitchen, and by every bedroom. Test them every month and make sure they have fresh batteries. Make sure that you change your batteries once a year. Smoke detectors save lives! The prevention of cooking fires is one of the best ways to lower the number of home fires all year round and not just during the holidays. Avoid becoming a statistic. By simply staying alert and attentive when cooking this year’s Thanksgiving feast, you will ensure your family will enjoy a safe and memorable holiday. Weston BSO Hosts Shred-a-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet COMMUNITY NEWS

n an effort to help prevent identity theft and prescription drug abuse, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is hosting a Shred-a-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet on Saturday, November 18th at the Weston Police Services Building. Residents are encouraged to drop off papers and pills to be safely destroyed. BSO’s Shred-a-Thon helps reduce crime by shredding sensitive documents as a pro-active step to reduce the risk of identity theft. Weston residents can safely destroy personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other material that might contain sensitive data. During last year’s Shred-a-Thon in Weston, 22,002 pounds of personal paperwork were securely shredded. BSO Crime Prevention Specialist Deputy Kari Pallotto says BSO’s Shred-a-Thon is a free and convenient way to safeguard your identity. “Set up like a drive-thru, officers will help residents unload boxes from their cars.” While there is no charge for the Shred-a-Thon service, there is a fivebox maximum per car. Boxes can be no larger than 15 inches long, 12 inches wide, and ten inches high. Operation Medicine Cabinet provides residents with the opportunity to dispose of unused, unwanted or expired medications. Deputy Pallotto says all medications will be accepted, just no needles or sharps. Participating residents will receive a $5 gift card, while supplies last. advantage of Operation Medicine Cabinet rather than throwing out or flushing medications. “If prescription medication gets into the water system, it can be bad for the environment. The purpose of this program is to dispose of old medicine properly and get any unused pills out of your house to prevent theft of the medicine.” Prescription drug abuse is on the rise, especially among teens. That’s because prescription drugs are easier for kids to get than illegal drugs. For many, it’s as easy as opening the medicine cabinet. Officials say one in four teens have misused or abused a prescription drug and prescription drugs account for more overdose deaths than street drugs. Programs such as Operation Medicine Cabinet with its no questions asked policy are proving successful in keeping prescription drugs off the streets. At last year’s event in Weston, 330.4 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs were disposed of safely. BSO’s Shred-a-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet will take place on Saturday, November 18th from 10am to 1pm in the parking lot of the Weston Police Services Center at 17300 Royal Palm Boulevard. leveland Clinic Florida has received a $2 million commitment from the Harry T. Mangurian, Jr. Foundation. The gift to The Campaign for Cleveland Clinic Florida supports medical education through the establishment of The Harry T. Mangurian, Jr. Simulation Center on the Weston campus. The facility is expected to open in Spring 2018. According to Cleveland Clinic Florida, the simulation center will leverage advanced technology to provide opportunities for caregivers to work in teams and replicate several real-life scenarios that take place in an emergency department trauma bay, a full-scale operating room, and a critical care (ICU) room. The Harry T. Mangurian, Jr. Simulation Center will provide learning opportunities for residents and fellows enrolled in Cleveland Clinic Florida’s graduate medical education (GME) program. More than 100 residents and fellows participate in its GME programs each year, making Cleveland Clinic Florida one of the largest training sites in South Florida. It has residency and fellowship programs in eleven medical specialties that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), plus additional fellowships in eight subspecialties.

“Medical education is the pillar of the Cleveland Clinic model of medicine,” states Wael Barsoum, MD, President of Cleveland Clinic Florida. “Honing the

Country Isles Elementary Welcomes Latinos in Action BY STACEY BOMSER

At the beginning of the school year, Western’s Latinos in Action Advisor Thalia Montes de Oca taught her students how to foster positive relationships and cultural awareness through interactions with the Country Isles students. “The mentors build a relationship with the students and support them socially and emotionally,” shares Principal Morgan. “They build their self-esteem and support them with their school work. Having a positive role model will promote social emotional growth in our students and will ensure a successful school year.” In addition to serving as mentors, reinforcing concepts taught in the classroom, the Latinos in Action also promote cultural pride. “Throughout the year, they will promote positive attitudes toward all cultures and collaborate with our staff to build students’ skills while assisting our students in adjusting to their new school.” This is the inaugural year of Latinos in Action at Country Isles Elementary. Cypress Bay High School has been doing the mentorship program successfully with students at Manatee Bay Elementary and Eagle Point Elementary.

wice a week, a group of Western High School students visit Country Isles Elementary to mentor young students who are acclimating to life in a new country. This project is part of Latinos in Action, a leadership program for high school students. “Latinos in Action is an opportunity for high school students to mentor younger students, helping them to be successful while maintaining pride in their culture,” explains Country Isles Principal Mindy Morgan. She says the students selected for the program from her school are all native Spanish-speakers who are learning to speak English. “The students that are new to our country have many questions and the Latinos in Action are there to support them to be successful at school and in their new environment,” explains Principal Morgan. “It is important because these students in elementary school can see that learning a new language and culture is difficult, but they will be successful and these high school students have already gone through that. The mentors know what it is like and how to guide the student to success.”

Everglades Elementary Shares Its Expertise During Digital Think Tank

verglades Elementary School has embraced technology. It’s been a Digital 4 and 5 school for the past two years, meaning that all fourth and fifth grade students have personal laptops. This year the school expanded the program, adding digital devices for third graders as well. It also has 12 new Recordex boards. These interactive panels significantly improve teachers’ demonstration abilities and student interaction. Because Everglades Elementary is a leader in the use of digital learning, it was selected to host the recent Broward County Public Schools Digital Think Tank session. School administrators and lead educators from across the district visited the school to deepen their understanding of digital classroom learning and how to effectively implement collaboration between the teachers and the media specialist. “Digital classroom learning, also referred to as ‘flipped classrooms,’ involves learning that is fully supported through technology,” explains Everglades Education Media Specialist Anabela Fernandes, who helped lead the Digital Think Tank session. “Students learn to use a variety of tech tools such as PowerPoint, Sway, and the district’s learning management system, Canvas. Students also conduct indepth research-based projects throughout the school year.” During the program, Mrs. Fernandes demonstrated how Canvas can be used to facilitate learning. The educators then went into break-out sessions where staff from the district’s Innovative Learning

Department provided training on the various applications of Microsoft Office365. Both teachers and administrators then visited classrooms, where Everglades students demonstrated use of the Recordex Interactive Panel, Canvas, district-approved research databases, and Microsoft Office365 applications. “Attendees were able to gain a stronger understanding of how using a learning management system, tools in Microsoft Office365, and online resource databanks are essential to digital learning and an invaluable resource for educating our students,” explains Mrs. Fernandes. “Furthermore, school administrators were able to better comprehend how collaboration between the school media specialist and classroom teachers benefits both the teachers and the students by allowing more instructional time in the classroom and providing students with reinforcement of the state standards in the Media special.” Everglades Elementary is proof of the power of digital learning. “Digital classrooms allow for more personalized learning and provide the teacher with more accurate descriptors of where each individual student is academically,” states Mrs. Fernandes. Principal Eliot Tillinger says he was proud his school was able to showcase such shining examples of instructional technology during the Digital Think Tank session. “Everglades Elementary is fortunate to have a talented faculty that embraces any and all tools and technology that will improve our 21st century learners.”

program for the 2016-2017 school year. The Weston City Commission recently recognized all eleven of the Broward County public schools serving the Weston community for their academic achievements. Each principal was presented with two

coveted crystal book awards honoring their individual achievement as well as the achievements of the school faculty, the students and the school community. In presenting the awards, Mayor Daniel Stermer, on behalf of the City Commission, noted that this achievement is a true testament to the dedication, commitment and hard work of every school in Weston for increasing the possibility for students to reach their highest educational aspirations. Yoga Class Helps Gator Run Students Develop Mentally and Physically

hysical Education class is so “old school.” Today, students at Gator Run Elementary are also participating in yoga -- gaining the physical and mental benefits of this mindfulness practice. Yoga is one of the school’s “Specials” offerings. During each cycle, students meet with certified yoga instructor Rebecca Rivera, who also happens to be a mom to two third grade boys. Mrs. Rivera developed a yoga curriculum specifically for Gator Run called Awesome Me. She explains, “It is a yoga and mindfulness inspired class in which we use movements, games, breathing exercises, stories, songs, visualizations, affirmations, and creative relaxation exercises to create the space needed for our kids to slow down and experience the value of becoming aware of their bodies, their breath and their minds. By doing this, we give kids the opportunity to notice how amazingly beautiful and awesome they are.” Yoga has many proven benefits for children. Mrs. Rivera explains that yoga promotes physical strength because children learn to use their muscles in new ways. She notes that balance, sustained through the poses, is another key element of yoga. “Studies suggest that through the practice of yoga and mindfulness inspired exercises, poses and games, children learn to become aware of their bodies and their breath, and use these to develop their ability to sustain a focused attention on the present moment.” Mrs. Rivera explains. “By doing this, kids learn to notice and self-regulate their emotions, their cognitive skills are strengthened and they feel empowered to make the best choices for themselves and others, improving their social experience and academic performance in school.” As for the mental and emotional benefits of yoga, Mrs. Rivera says the practice

helps instill confidence and bring learning to children on an experiential level. “Yoga teaches children to persevere, be patient, and work toward their goals. A yoga teacher can only offer guidance; it is the child who has to work to succeed. Therefore, when a child masters a pose, it gives him confidence and self-esteem.” This is the second year the school has offered yoga as a “Specials” class. Principal Keith Peters says the program was so successful last year, this year the tech lab was converted into a yoga studio, thanks to the Gator Run community. “We were fortunate that one of our parents, who is the manager of Orchard Supply Hardware, was interested in helping with a project. He donated paint and manpower to paint the studio and has donated money for plants and other furnishings. Our PTA decorated the studio as well.” Mrs. Rivera says she is grateful for the beautiful space, which she calls the Peaceful Garden. “It has become a space for play, exploration and relaxation, which kids embrace and appreciate, giving the class a whole new perspective and meaning.”

Cypress Bay UNICEF Club Raises Awareness and Funds

ypress Bay’s UNICEF Club is the high school’s biggest and best club. In fact, for the past two years it has won the “best club” award at the Lightning Oscars. Even more impressive, it is the number one UNICEF Club in the country. At 1,000plus members strong, that’s not surprising. UNICEF stands for the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund. According to Franco Darsin, Co-president of the Cypress Bay UNICEF Club, “UNICEF’s mission is to help children meet their basic needs by providing them with opportunities that help them reach their full potential.” The Cypress Bay UNICEF Club is committing to fulfilling that humanitarian goal by raising funds for the UNICEF UF Fund. “Last school year, we raised a total of $60,000 for the organization, which we’re all extremely proud of, bringing us to a grand total of $140,000,” boasts Co-president Camila Brooks. “Being able to wake up every day knowing that all of us are improving the lives of children around the world is truly amazing.” Raising that kind of money is no easy feat. The club is constantly fundraising. It just completed the annual “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” campaign. This month, members are collecting for the Harvest Drive, a local food drive that provides a Thanksgiving meal and a week’s worth of groceries to more than 2,300 families in need in Broward County. Other fundraisers for UNICEF

include selling chocolate and Oreo cookies. In addition to fundraising, the Cypress Bay UNICEF Club organizes awareness campaigns to reach the student body. “Throughout our school, we put up flyers alerting students about worldwide issues that affect children and informing the school body of all the steps that the UNICEF US Fund takes to improve the lives of these children,” explains Camila. Manatee Bay Elementary Turns to Social Media to Survive the Storm

s Hurricane Irma headed toward South Florida, Manatee Bay Elementary School turned to social media to keep in communication with families and staff. It started a WhatsApp chat group, which administrators used to provide updates on school closings, local shelters and post-hurricane damage and clean-up efforts, including where to volunteer or donate extra supplies after the storm. “Creating a sense of community has always been a huge part of the Bay,” shares Manatee Bay PTA Secretary Julie Romaniw. “One would wish it was a better circumstance, but we were able to do just that with over 400 families joining the chat group.” With Weston being a somewhat transient community, for many Manatee Bay families this was their first experience facing a hurricane. The WhatsApp chat group helped ease the tension for many people, even those who have weathered tropical storms in the past. “It was a helpful source for many to share and receive information on storm directions, necessary supplies, where to find gas, and decisions on whether to stay or travel north,” noted PTA Yearbook Co-Chair Lisa Vlock. “We found it especially helpful when all the families that left the state were trying to get back home.”

In addition to providing critical information, the chat group also served to bond the school community. Families were invited to share pictures of their children wearing school shirts while prepping for the storm, keeping entertained when the power was out, and helping with hurricane clean-up. According to Vlock, “We got numerous pictures of families hunkered down in the bathrooms during the tornado warnings, picking apples in another state, and hanging in a raft with flooded streets.” Romaniw says the app was a great network for information and provided a sense of community in a time of uncertainty and stress. “Manatee Bay has always been a huge family and this disaster brought us all closer.” Principal Heather Hedman-DeVaughn agrees. “It was great riding through the storm with our Manatee Bay family. Together we were strong.”

ndian Trace Elementary and Eagle Point Elementary participated in International Walk to School Day on October 4th. They were among the thousands of schools and communities around the country, and world, to take part in the annual event which celebrates the benefits and fun of walking to school. “International Walk to School Day was a hit at Indian Trace Elementary,” boasts Principal Amy Winder. “Any time we get to join 40 other countries in promoting safe routes to school and physical activity is a winning day for us! Having our elected city officials and School Board Member join us on this day made it extra special.” Weston City Commissioner Toby Feuer and Broward County School Board Member Robin Bartleman were on hand to greet students and families as they walked to Indian Trace Elementary School. At Eagle Point Elementary, Deputy Kari Pallotto joined students and families in

walking to school. Police Chief Kevin Butler and BSO deputies passed out health and safety information to children. This was the 20th anniversary of Walk to School Day. It began in 1997 as Walk Our Children to School Day. Organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America, Walk to School Day was created as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities and promoting safe routes to school. The event was established as international in 2000, when Canada and the United Kingdom joined with the United States. Growing interest in participation all over the world led to October being promoted as International Walk to School Month. Five years ago, the first-ever National Bike to School Day was celebrated. It takes place each May.

College Night Informs Families About Application Process

n order to help students and parents understand the college admission process, Broward Advisors for Continuing Education (BRACE) Adviser Shari Bush held the annual College Night at Cypress Bay High School. “I hold College Night to educate all of our students about the application process,” Mrs. Bush said. “It’s so important for them to really know how that works. It’s my job and my pleasure to teach them.” More than 600 people attended. Mrs. Bush said there were two College Nights so all the parents and students who wanted to attend would be able to. She had slightly different presentations each night to suit the students and parents attending. “The 11th and 12th graders are definitely closer to the process, so we were giving them some more current info and really getting them ready,” Mrs. Bush said. “For the 9th and 10th graders, it’s more of navigating their way through high school so that they’re in the best possible place to start the process a year or two from now.” At College Night, Mrs. Bush presented a PowerPoint in which she discussed the college application process, essays, scholarships, financial aid and Florida universities. “We covered everything. Because the process is so overwhelming and it’s changing every couple of years, it’s important that [students and parents] are updated and have the information,” Mrs. Bush said. “It’s impor-

Junior Carolina Gomez said she attended College Night to stay informed about college news and applications. “Because I’m currently a junior in high school, near the end of the year I’m going to have to start thinking about where I want to go and what I want

to do. It’s getting closer to senior year so there’s less time to think about it.” Ilene Herman, junior Dayna Herman’s mother, said it was helpful to attend College Night since the college admission process often changes. “The process is a lot different from when I applied many years ago and it’s a lot different from when my older daughter applied three years ago. I thought College Night was extremely informative; it was definitely a wake-up call.” Mrs. Herman said she has attended College Night in the past, but she wanted to receive more up-to-date information. “I was surprised at how much more difficult it is to get into Florida schools now. Colleges are more competitive nowadays.” Mrs. Bush said she wants parents and students to feel confident after College Night knowing that there are many resources at the Bay. “I hope they feel good about knowing that they have somebody to guide them throughout this at every step of the way,” Mrs. Bush said. “Hopefully, what came across loud and clear is my passion for what I do and how available we are to help every student at whatever level or at whatever path they want to take.” Jessie Chaiet is a junior at Cypress Bay High School. Community Invited to College Planning Workshop at St. Katharine Drexel Church

he college application and admissions process can be quite confusing and challenging for many students and their parents. The Women of Faith Ministry at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church is aiming to answer questions and ease concerns with its Road Map to College seminar. The free program is open to all high school juniors and seniors and their parents. “College planning is a very exciting yet stressful process for many families,” states Narcy Ascuntar, board member of the Women of Faith Ministry and director of outreach ministry. “Our local high schools have very large graduating classes making it difficult, at times, to afford every student with one-to-one expert guidance. Therefore, we thought it would be great for our local high school students to have the opportunity to attend a college information/planning session where they could learn how to prepare for the challenging undertaking of applying for college and ask specific questions about their current college direction and selections.” The Women of Faith Ministry has invited Liz AliceaVelez, executive director of Huntington Learning Center in Pembroke Pines, to speak. She has received extensive training from Huntington, worked closely with high school counselors, and has been advising families for the past four years. In addition, she has raised two children; one who graduated from

NC State as a computer science engineer and another who is currenting attending NYU. Alicea-Velez plans to address several topics during the seminar. She will provide a guide to understanding the ACT/SAT test process, as well as include information on college planning, campus visits, applications, essays, and more. She will share some of the strategies she uses when working with students at Huntington Learning Center. “I talk to the students and their parents about the three-legged stool that students must balance during their high school years: 1) grades and core classes; 2) extra-curricular activities, volunteer hours, leadership roles in their community and social life; and 3) the college process that includes the plan for taking and being successful with the SAT/ACT test, applying for colleges and scholarships.” In addition, Alicea-Velez says it’s important for parents to support their children during this process. “Parents must be present and try their best to help the student maintain their focus on what is important in each step of the journey. All of the students today have a ton of distractions and are under tremendous pressure with school, grades, applications, testing, visiting colleges, sports, jobs and their social life. Your child needs you more than ever.”

She adds, “Sometimes you are the coach, sometimes the strict parent, and other times you are the kind ear to help them problem solve just by listening to them think out loud.” Alicea-Velez reminds parents that one of the reasons the college process is so overwhelming is because it involves so much change. “Remember your child will be leaving home soon and you want them to be ready for the new challenges that college will bring” Road Map to College presented by the St. Katharine Drexel Women of Faith Ministry is open to the Weston community. Attendees should bring a notebook and a desire to learn about the college search and application process.

arents of toddlers are no strangers to toddler outbursts. There are two types: tantrums and sensory meltdowns. Think of tantrums as a denial of service: your child wants something that he is not allowed to have or not allowed to do. Meltdowns, on the other hand, are a backlash against feeling overwhelmed. Out of a clear blue sky the storm clouds of a tantrum can roll in if your child has to wait his turn in line for the water fountain or the slide at a playground. Everything seemed fine two minutes ago and suddenly your angel is having a screaming thrashing fit. A tantrum can be the result of you announcing that it is time to go to the grocery store when your daughter is happily playing with her stuffed animals, and she does not want to leave or understand why she has to stop her play time. The next time your daughter has a tantrum, watch her carefully, as carefully as she watches your behavior. You may notice her looking at you out of the corner of her eye to detect what your reaction is. Meltdowns are responses to frustration, and may be beyond your child’s control. Language may be the issue: toddlers are beginning to comprehend a lot of the words that they hear, but they may not be able to express that language yet. Imagine what it would be like if you knew what you wanted to express but just couldn’t say it. Don’t let your child’s tantrum threaten your equilibrium. Losing your cool by walking away, which will be perceived as abandonment, will most likely lead to a negative response from your toddler. As hard as it may be, your best strategy is to remain calm, in counterpoint to their near hysteria. Speak soothingly to your child even though it may seem like whispering in a hurricane. Try saying, “I know that you want Mommy to understand that you don’t want to go to the grocery store and you are unhappy. Would you feel better if Mommy let you play a little longer before we go?” Don’t change your plans but stay flexible enough to delay them slightly. “I will set this timer and when it rings then it will be time to go. Is that OK?” That option gives your little one a sense of some control and acknowledges that you understand her plight. If your toddler is having a meltdown – and the distinction between the two is not always clear cut – the best approach is to limit what may be a sensory overload. A sensory overload can result from a trip to Disneyworld or just a trip to the mall. Find a quiet place and speak soothingly to your child. Time away from the overload and your calm and soothing presence should eventually dissipate the meltdown. Discuss the event with your child afterwards. Children want to be understood, and they don’t understand the range of emotions that they express. Let your child know that you love him by giving him a quick hug. Being a supportive and encouraging parent shows your child that you understand your child’s emotions. It takes lots of time and effort, but those actions promote a positive sense of self-esteem, heighten your child’s development and most important, build a strong bond between the two of you. Pick Your Poison: Thumb Sucking or Pacifier Use BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN

long with many other parents, you may be concerned with your child’s finger sucking, thumb sucking or pacifier use. The majority of children will have one of these oral habits until two years of age. The shadows of prenatal thumb sucking have been seen on sonograms for years. Newer 3-D imaging technology allows for vivid evidence of prenatal thumb sucking. Sucking is a natural reflex that helps to soothe infants and provides a sense of security. Problems arise when these habits are carried on beyond the age of two. This may result in a negative affect on development of the upper and lower jaws as well as the eventual alignment of the teeth. The amount of facial/dental changes will depend upon the duration and force of the habit. One common affect of a sucking habit is the formation of an “open bite.” This is a “malocclusion” (bite problem) characterized by a vertical space between the upper and lower front teeth. Another resulting bite problem is a cross-bite. This is seen as a backwards relation of the back teeth. The upper teeth will be positioned closer to the tongue than the lower teeth. Others may simply notice a “buck” appearance of the upper front teeth. Such conditions may possibly lead to self conscious feelings, social ridicule by peers and may result in speech problems or functional disorders later in life. We are commonly asked whether one habit is better than another. Pacifier use seems to be the lesser of the “evils.” We notice less constriction of the palate with pacifier use and it is the habit more easily broken. Put another way, we cannot simply throw out a thumb or a finger as may be done with a pacifier. In either case, it is of utmost importance that an oral habit is broken long before the eruption of permanent teeth, which usually occurs between the ages of 6-7. Most children stop oral habits on their own or with the help of their parents’ positive “big boy/big girl” reinforcement. We recommend that parents remember to praise your child for not sucking their thumb/finger instead of scolding them when they are. Try to alleviate anxiety and insecurities that may be causing the necessity to soothe this way. Peer pressure of school aged children also helps the older thumb/ finger suckers to stop. Home remedies include covering the hand with a sock, use of long sleeve night shirt with sleeves sewn closed, or rubbing aloe on the culprit thumb/finger. If attempts at habit correction fail or you begin to notice the dental/skeletal effects of these habits, it is advisable to consult with your local pediatric dentist or orthodontist. Prevention is the key!

n today’s day and age, it is hard to tell what’s good or bad when it comes to nutrition. There is an overload of information available - studies, documentaries, blogs and social media posts. In spite of recent attempts to put the blame of our current “unhealthy” state on factors such as meat consumption and dairy products, the role of excess sugar in the American diet cannot be ignored or downplayed. Sugar has a place in your diet because your body needs it to function. When you eat food, the body breaks it down into glucose, which is released into the bloodstream. Insulin then helps move that glucose into the cells to be used for energy. But the problem is the excess - most of the processed foods or food choices that are “convenient” are loaded with hidden sugars. They won’t necessarily bring about more energy, but instead will shut your body down as proven by numerous scientific studies throughout several decades. People who suffer from diabetes have blood glucose levels higher than normal or have problems, because the body can’t make enough insulin or process it adequately. Children Can Exercise their Minds and Bodies at Weston Branch Library COMMUNITY NEWS

he library is no longer a dark, quiet place filled floor to ceiling with stacks of books. Today’s modern library now functions more like a community center with a variety of programs and events to entertain and educate. The Weston Branch Library offers a full menu of programs for children of all ages. The Story Time programs promote literacy in young children, with sessions for babies (3-11 months), toddlers (12-35 months) and preschool (ages 3-5 years). Story Time is held almost every Thursday morning in the library’s multi-purpose room. Baby Story Time is from 10:30-11am, toddlers from 11:30am12pm, and preschool from 12:30-1pm. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver. To help children who are learning to read, the Weston Branch Library offers Wags and Tales. Children can read to a therapy dog. The intent of the program is to make reading fun and boost the child’s confidence in reading aloud. This month’s program is on Thursday, November 16th from 3-4pm in the children’s program room. Pre-registration is required; call 954-357-5430. Sensory Story Time is designed for children with autism spectrum disorders, sensory integration issues, and other developmental disabilities. If your child has difficulty sitting through one of the library’s other story time sessions, this program of stories, songs, and activities might be just what you are looking for. It is held every other Saturday from 2-3pm in the multi-purpose room.

The library offers yoga and exercise classes for tiny tots as well. This month, classes are on Thursday, November 9th. Yoga for Babies (3-11 months) takes place from 10:30-11am and Yoga for Preschool (3-5 years) is from 12:30-1pm. These classes are held in the multipurpose room. Zumbini will be held on Saturday, November 18th from 10:30-11:30am. This mommy and me Zumba class will allow babies and toddlers (0-3 years) to learn, bond, and grow in an upbeat and happy, musical environment. One child per adult. The Weston Branch Library offers afterschool programs for elementary school students. Munchkin Mondays, for kindergarten through fifth grade, is the second Monday of the month. Weston Athlete Earns Spot on National Taekwondo Team BY STACEY BOMSER

ou could say Nicolas Liway is a fast learner. The Imagine Charter School at Weston fifth grader has only been training in taekwondo for four years, but he is already good enough to represent our country. As an official Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Team member, Nicolas most recently competed at the 2017 Taekwondo Costa Rica Open, where he won a gold medal in sparring and a bronze medal in poomsae (forms). In March, he will represent the United States at the Taekwondo Germany Open. “I qualified for the 2017-2018 AAU National Team by training really hard, that is two to four hours a day,” explains Nicolas. “I won five fights at the AAU Nationals to get the gold medal and the spot in the AAU U.S. Team.” There are six weight classes in Nicolas’ age group, the 10-11 Cadet Team. He is in the under 63.9-pound Nicolas Liway won a gold medal in sparring class. He is the only athlete from at the 2017 Taekwondo Costa Rica Open. Florida in his age group. Nicolas says he enjoys competing in the international events. “I like to travel and meet kids from other countries. I have friends around the world!”

In addition to the 2017 Costa Rica Open, Nicolas competed in the 2017 US Open in Las Vegas and at the 2016 and 2017 World Taekwondo Open in Mexico. He says the Costa Rica Open was one of the most memorable. Teams from 31 countries competed in that tournament. “The feeling of holding the U.S. flag along with my gold medal and representing my country in the competition was incredible.” Locally, Nicolas trains at the Florida Taekwondo College in Doral with Master Guillermo Mosquera and at the Taekwondo Athletic Center in Coconut Creek with Master Juan Catalan. In addition, Nicolas trains in his garage with his father, Manuel, who is also a taekwondo instructor. He says the family is working to open a taekwondo school in the Weston area. Taekwondo is not the only martial art that Nicolas studies. He also holds a purplebrown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His other hobbies include playing soccer and the guitar, but taekwondo is definitely his passion. “In a few years from now I see myself competing in the Olympics since taekwondo is an Olympic sport,” states Nicolas.

espite medicine’s best efforts, degenerative joint disease, also known as osteoarthritis, continues to be one of our society’s most common – and tragic – degenerative diseases. By age 30, about one third of the population will show osteoarthritic changes on spinal x-ray, and by 70 years of age degenerative joint disease is almost universal. The prevalence of osteoarthritis has lead to two widespread misconceptions. Many people attribute back or neck pain to the presence of spinal degeneration. Similarly, many believe spinal degeneration is a normal and inevitable aging process. Both these traditional beliefs are now starting to be questioned as more, and better, research is expanding our knowledge of this condition. Although recent medical research has identified a possible genetic component to certain forms of osteoarthritis in certain individuals, spinal degeneration is still considered largely a “wear and tear” condition. In the simplest terms, the spine is comprised of vertebra separated from one another by discs (analogous to cushions or sponges). As we age, these discs undergo subtle biochemical changes resulting in a loss of thickness and cushioning ability. Evidence now suggests these biochemical alterations in the disc may be a product of chronic undernourishment due to faulty spinal mechanics, rather than an inevitable part of the aging phenomenon. Faulty spinal mechanics is primarily the result of accidents, microtrauma and postural distortions. Trauma and abnormal posture produces malalignment of the spine, further contributing to spinal wear and tear. The major significance of spinal osteoarthritis, however, lies in its effect on the nervous system. Studies show even minor changes in spinal configuration – the beginning stages of the degeneration process – result in compromise of the spinal cord and associated nerve function. As the arthritic changes progress in severity so does nervous system compromise. The potential implications of this are enormous, as science confirms the nervous system controls every tissue, organ and system in the body. For example, evidence shows there is a direct connection between the nervous and immune systems. The process of spinal degeneration may not be an inevitable part of aging. This is evident from the fact many older people have healthy, well-preserved discs and no sign of disc or joint degeneration. Yet severe degenerative change can be seen in young adults if there has been trauma or prolonged, abnormal spinal stress, such as the result of postural distortion and malalignment. Chiropractic care can significantly benefit osteoarthritis sufferers by gradually improving movement in dysfunctional joints and through restoring normal spinal curves and alignment. In addition to relieving pain, chiropractic care may also assist in preventing further degeneration from occurring. The most important contribution chiropractic care can have to spinal health, however, may lie in prevention. Through maintaining optimum joint movement and spinal alignment, regular chiropractic care can help prevent spinal degeneration from starting in the first place.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. he arch of a person’s foot is the main supporting structure of the body. It is composed of bones that are connected by ligaments. If the ligaments are strong, the integrity of the arch remains intact. Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops.

CAUSES: Flatfeet include loose ligaments in the arch. Trauma to tendons or bone abnormalities can cause the foot to flatten. Tight calf muscles can severely aggravate the condition. Arthritis in the foot or ankle (rheumatoid, psoriatic) can be a predisposing factor in flatfeet. SYMPTOMS: Pain, usually in the arch, ankles and legs aggravated by standing and walking, is most common. Premature fatigue during any type of activity frequently occurs. Cramping in the legs, especially at night is common. In children, a general lack of interest in participating in sports may be seen. SIGNS: A flat arch when standing or the foot excessively points to the outside especially during gait. Bulging of the bones on the inside of the ankle and foot are usually seen. Flat feet are usually associated with knock-knees and abnormal shoe wear. RELATED PROBLEMS: Back and knee problems are seen, especially in children and men. Hammertoes, heel spurs and bunions are often associated with flatfeet as a person ages. Arthritis in the foot, ankle, knees, hips and back is also common with aging. Inactivity, which can cause weight gain and poor cardiovascular fitness, may occur.

he concept of holistic medicine has been around for hundreds of years. So why is it that just recently interest in holistic skincare products and practices is on the rise? The concept of holism goes back centuries to the earliest naturopathic physicians. The basic concept of holism is that the component parts of the body are interconnected and therefore one cannot understand individual parts of the body without understanding the needs and workings of the “whole body.” In a similar sense, the practice of holistic medicine actually consists of using a number of different health disciplines and health philosophies that go centuries back in medicine together in the prevention and treatment of disease. Today, when we look at holistic medicine, we look at naturopathic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda and nutrition all working together to promote wellness and treat sickness. In treatment of patients in a holistic medical practice, we look at the individuals’ physical, mental, spiritual and overall wellbeing. Treatment of the whole is a similar concept with holistic skincare. In a holistic approach to skincare, we not only look at a person’s skin, but as importantly, how the skin relates to the total body as a complex system. Today, holistic medicine has evolved to include natural skincare and thus consumers now want and look for holistic products and healing aesthetics and modalities. Because of the growing popularity of integrative and holistic medical clinics throughout the world, the public’s increasing awareness and preferences are now moving to include alternative healthcare as a part of, and sometimes even as a replacement of, traditional medical care. In fact, holistic aestheticians understand that the mind and the body function as one unit. As a result, they are most often looking to treat the root cause of a skin condition rather than treat a symptom. So, for example, take someone with sensitive skin and acne. It is important to do critical scientific exploration to understand the cause and the effect of the condition. Is it caused by diet? The environment? Or is it a product of stress? The holistic aesthetician typically has a broader training and understanding of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, products and ingredients from a functional and integrated standpoint and, therefore, they usually implement a therapeutic model of prevention and provide treatments that fundamentally do not alter the biological aspects of the skin. They are also very committed to the wellness for the whole client and are committed to a providing a complete program of lifestyle improvement and change as a part of treating the one condition that they may be addressing. Holistic skincare is not trendy and it is deeply connected to the sciences behind touch, healing, wellness and mindfulness and the mind-body-spirit. Along with taking deeper breaths you can slow your roll so to speak and saunter like Ernie Els. “Just be conscious of all the changes in your body and recognize things are different.” – Most importantly, be aware that you are dealing with adversity and learn from how you handle it. Start keeping a journal of what thoughts pop into your head and how your body feels when adversity strikes. This will help you to stay calm since you’re not panicking on the inside anymore. It also helps to identify the way you deal with adversity so that you can break the cycle and no longer crack under it. The next time you are in front of a crowd on the first tee or making that putt, you will have the confidence and mind set to pull it off without pressure. How Sleep Affects Ocular Health ASK THE EXPERT

t every age we need adequate, uninterrupted sleep for optimal, wakeful functioning. Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Traditional medicine also considers appropriate sleep, among other factors, essential to maintain ocular health. A 2016 study from Japan concluded sleep quality is associated with dry eye disease (DED), and sleep disturbance seems to be an influencing factor on DED, especially dry eye symptoms. We are familiar with ocular surface disease (OSD) in patients with sleep apnea, often associated with floppy eyelid syndrome. In examination of risk factors for severe dry eye symptoms in U.S. veterans, sleep apnea was identified as a risk factor for severe dry eye symptoms. Additionally, sleep posture may be a factor in OSD. In addition to current dry eye treatments, patients who sleep on their sides or face down may see a reduction in dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) if they change their sleep pattern to the supine position.

Sleep disturbance can be identified and quantified using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire tool. The PSQI is a self-report questionnaire that assesses sleep quality over a one-month interval. The PSQI measures the quality and patterns of sleep in older adults by measuring seven domains. It consists of 19 items generating seven component scores, such as sleep latency (i.e., how long it takes to fall asleep), sleep duration, and sleep disturbances. A 2009 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) survey disclosed that adults who reported sleeping less than the recommended seven to nine hours per night were more likely to have difficulty performing many daily tasks.

Combating sleep disorders

The CDC recognizes insufficient/poor sleep as a public health problem, especially since the CDC surveillance of sleep-related behaviors has increased in recent years. Additionally, the National Academy of Medicine encouraged collaboration between the CDC and the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research to support development and expansion of surveillance of the U.S. population’s sleep patterns and associated outcomes. The National Sleep Foundation offers suggestions to enhance patients’ sleep patterns—including the promotion of regular, healthy sleep habits. This begs the question: Should ODs incorporate a sleep survey into their dry eye exams? Akin to dry eye disease, there are numerous validated global and targeted patient sleep/sleepiness/insomnia questionnaires available. Questionnaires can be selected to help identify sleep disorders in subsets of patients such as pediatric, adolescent, adult patients, or obstructive sleep apnea suspects. any couples are choosing to attend mediation rather than seek the representation of an attorney when considering a divorce. So rather than speaking to an attorney to learn about the law, they decide to attend a mediation session without representation, hoping to settle their case quickly and painlessly. In some cases this could be a good idea, since it probably would be less costly. Sometimes, however, it is “penny wise and pound foolish.” You may be successful in saving costs and attorney’s fees, but you may in turn be giving up more than you should. A signed mediation settlement agreement is a binding contract between the parties. If in fact you change your mind about the distribution of property after the agreement is signed, you will generally be “stuck” with your decision. “I didn’t have an attorney” will not be a defense. In addition, the mediator, although usually an attorney, is not playing the role of an attorney and therefore cannot give either party legal advice. Basically, you will be on your own.

I am not suggesting that mediation is always the wrong decision. In fact, parties who cannot reach a settlement on their own, even when represented by attorneys, must attend mediation prior to a final hearing being set. So, mediation can be a very successful tool, provided you know the law. If you are aware of what you are either entitled to or what you must give up, then a fair and equitable settlement can be reached. If you enter mediation without any idea of how the law is structured, you run the risk of reaching an unfair agreement. Perhaps the most important consideration is choosing the correct mediator. Mediators are trained and licensed. I find it very important when hiring a mediator to make sure his/her personality will be favorable for my client. Each mediator has a different style in the way they approach a case. Mediators generally charge from $150 to $350 an hour for their time. Most mediations last at least four to five hours, although some can last a full day. Anything discussed in mediation is confidential and therefore cannot be discussed after the mediation concludes. This is to promote the exchange of settlement offers without the fear that these offers will be used against you, should the mediation not be successful. A successful Mediator will settle a very high percentage of their mediations. Those are obviously very good odds for success. Not a smoker? You Could Still Be at Risk for Lung Cancer There is a common misconception that if someone has never smoked that they aren’t at risk for lung cancer. While tobacco smoking is the number one cause, Bruno Bastos, MD Oncologist there are other Cleveland Clinic Florida factors that can result in the development of lung cancer. Lung Cancer Stigma Some in our society believe that diagnosis of lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke only. e all know that life is both precious and unpredictable, yet most of us spend a lot of time stressed out and anxious. Unfortunately, we end up saying we should and could do more to be happier and healthier…and end up SHOULDING all over ourselves!!! It’s not surprising, as few individuals know how to cultivate calm; learning to surf one’s 65,000 daily spinning thoughts is not an easy task. Greek philosopher Epictetus said, “It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” What mindfulness teaches us is to pay attention to the present moment, rather than worrying about the past or future, while observing our thoughts, feelings and events with a patient curiosity. This practice enables us to have some distance between our thoughts, rather hearing self-doubt and criticism. As a practitioner and researcher, we have produced brain scans that prove that mindfulness and meditation can change the size of key regions of our brains, improving memory, making us more compassionate and resilient under stress. As we develop our own personal practice, we don’t get so caught up in the chaos inside our heads and in the world. We start to see that thoughts and feelings are not facts, and that we can relate differently to our minds; observing our negative thinking patterns with kindness. In fact, these are effective therapies for depression, addiction and social anxiety; studies also show increased creativity and decreased burnout in the workplace. I’ve had the privilege of developing mindfulness programs for numerous companies and have worked with thousands of individuals as a means of enhancing wellbeing, productivity and motivation. If you can breathe, you can meditate; it may seem simple, but it is not easy. What training allows students to do is to learn the power of non-verbal spaces through awareness and create a strong meditation practice. And if you already have a practice, there are always new techniques that can enhance and strengthen what you already are doing. A daily practice helps many live healthier, more joyful and productive lives. Life is a journey, so mindfully embracing and managing the time that we are given is how to best reach our goals and embrace our precious and unpredictable time.

The Mindfulness Manifesto – a new and improved model for increasing wellbeing: 1. Set a long-term goal. It could be health, personal, professional or spiritual. Understand why this is important to you. 2. Practice your behavior and start small. Research demonstrates that we become good at whatever we practice, so practice behaviors that bring you closer to achieving what is most important for you. Realize that you will stray from your goals, so approach your goals with patience and self-compassion. 3. Should Happens. Don’t beat yourself up. We all tend to think in a “dualistic” manner; either something is good or bad. Rather than judging yourself, simply notice your behaviors and bring yourself back to the present moment. By noticing our behaviors, we have a better chance of changing them. 4. Practice enables progress…not perfection. Approach yourself with less judgement and self-criticism. Cultivate patience.

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster, first, the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. In a matter of hours, Rotarians with cell phones rallied businesses, associations, government officials and fellow Rotarians near and far to join in the Keys relief efforts. “One of the few positives that came from Irma for many of us was a new-found appreciation, almost amazement, at the collective power of Rotary,” says District Governor Alan Cohn. “Our members, and the resources that we can marshal for our service efforts, can do amazing things, and we proved that with a great effort on Irma.” November is traditionally the month that Rotarians focus on The Rotary Foundation, Rotary International’s charitable arm for doing good in the world. The Foundation funds humanitarian projects around the globe, including responding to disasters. Locally, Rotarians in South Florida have long supported their local charitable fund specifically organized for disaster relief, and monetary donations are pouring into that. Extra water and food stockpiles have been rerouted to Puerto Rico, while supplies for reconstruction and repair are still being collected for the Keys and the islands.

t’s been a rough fall. Over a thousand died and millions were left homeless because of monsoon flooding and landslides in South Asia. Earthquakes razed parts of Mexico killing hundreds and leaving thousands more without safe housing. Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria inflicted massive damage to the Texas Gulf coast, the Florida Keys and many islands of the Caribbean, including serious devastation to Puerto Rico — again, Weston Rotarian Margarita Troconis-Lartitegui joins the crew headed to Key West to assist leaving thousands homeless. with Hurricane Irma recovery efforts. Since August, Weston Rotarians have jumped in to help, and will continue to help with hearts, hands, connections and donations. Within a week of Hurricane Irma, Rotary clubs throughout South Florida along with Rotaract club members, business associates, friends and family organized a hurricane relief effort. The Rotary Clubs of Fort Lauderdale, led by President Jonathan Keith, and Weston, led by President Brad Coren, joined other District 6990 Rotarians to help those impacted by the storm as they collected over 60,000 pounds of necessities. Among the donations were several trucks from local companies and a vintage DC-3 cargo plane to airlift the supplies to the Keys. “This is what we do! We are Rotarians in Action to help our community,” notes Jim Norton, a Past District Governor and Rotary Club of Weston member who traveled to the Keys with other South Florida Rotarians to assist. “Presidents Jonathan and Brad saw a need to help our neighbors in the Keys and they called others to serve. They organized our time, talent and resources to make a difference. Our motto says it all, Service Above Self!”

Buttock Enhancement (a.k.a. Brazilian Butt Lift) ASK THE EXPERT

ennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian started a craze for an enhanced buttock. Flat or less protruding rear ends everywhere are being surgically enhanced into more shapely curves and feminine fullness. More women everywhere are considering, or getting buttock enhancements – lifted, sculpted, or augmented. Tighter fitting clothing, such as low-cut sweats, workout pants and leotards are seen in public more often, and a more shapely feminine figure has become aesthetically more desirable. The popularity of the butt lift is not just a U.S. fashion fad. Many women desire to enhance their buttock and thigh region to create a beautiful buttock shape and the very attractive sweep of the lower back, hips and waist. The buttock augmentation (a.k.a. Brazilian Butt Lift) is enjoying a surge in popularity, because women are unhappy with their buttocks - viewing them as too flat, too wide, or sagging. They were either born like this, or lost the form and shape of their buttocks after losing or gaining weight. Pregnancy, or just aging alone, can also affect the size, projection, and profile of the buttocks. Inability to achieve perky buttocks and sexy curves through exercise and muscle toning has frustrated healthconscious women. There are a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures available for those who desire youthful, fuller, and perky buttocks, with a more sensual body profile. These techniques vary depending on what is actually missing and what is the overall body frame and form. For example, there are many who are either genetically or by weight gain have developed “fat and wide” buttocks. Liposculpture can shape their buttocks and the surrounding tissues to make the buttocks rounder and more proportional to the rest of the figure. On the other hand, there are those who have “flat and wide” buttocks. In addition to utilizing liposculpture to shape their waist, hips and buttocks, fat injection or grafting is used to augment the buttocks and to provide fullness and projection. Because it also helps to lift loose buttock tissue, this procedure is also referred to as a Brazilian Buttock Lift. Contrary to the above, there are some with sagging buttocks who are not a candidate for Brazilian Buttock Augmentation. These are people whose buttocks sag as a result of massive weight loss, such as after a gastric bypass surgery. These individuals would benefit from a body lift procedure which removes excess skin and helps to lift their thighs and buttocks. Why Do I Need To Vaccinate My Pet? ompanion animals today can live longer, healthier lives than ever before, in part due to the availability of vaccines that can protect pets from deadly infectious diseases. Over the past several decades, the widespread use of vaccines against diseases like rabies has saved the lives of millions of pets and driven some diseases into relative obscurity. Unfortunately, infectious diseases still pose a significant threat to dogs and cats that are unvaccinated; therefore, although vaccine programs have been highly successful, pet owners and veterinarians cannot afford to be complacent about the importance of keeping pets up-to-date on their vaccinations.

How Do Vaccines Work?

Although there are many types of vaccines, they tend to work through a similar principle. Most vaccines contain a very small portion of the virus or bacterium that is the infectious agent. When this material is introduced into the body in a vaccine, the body’s immune system responds through a series of steps that include making antibodies and modifying other cells that will recognize the target organism later. When the vaccinated individual encounters the “real” organism later, the body recognizes the organism and reacts to protect the vaccinated individual from becoming sick.

Many vaccines are available for dogs and cats, but every pet does not need to receive every available vaccine. So how do you know which vaccines your pet should have? The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) have summarized vaccine recommendations to help veterinarians clarify how to best protect dogs and cats using vaccine programs. AAHA and AAFP evaluated the available vaccines and categorized them to provide guidelines on how commonly they should be used. Vaccines are categorized as core, non-core, or not recommended. A core vaccine is one that all pets should receive. The core vaccines for dogs are rabies, distemper, adenovirus-2, and parvovirus; and the core vaccines for cats are rabies, rhinotracheitis (feline herpesvirus-1), panleukopenia (feline distemper), and calicivirus. Non-core vaccines are optional ones that pets can benefit from based on their risk for exposure to the disease. Examples include the vaccines against Lyme disease and leptospirosis in dogs, and the vaccines against feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus (or feline AIDS) in cats. Categorization of a vaccine as “not recommended” does not mean that the vaccine is bad or dangerous. This designation simply means that widespread use of the vaccine is not currently recommended.

What Is The Recommended Schedule For Vaccines?

Puppies and kittens generally receive their first vaccines when they are around six to eight weeks of age (depending on the vaccine and manufacturer’s recommendations). Booster vaccines are generally given during your puppy or kitten checkup visits. Although puppies and kittens are considered especially vulnerable to some diseases, it is also very important for adult pets to be up-to-date on vaccines. Traditionally, many vaccines were repeated yearly, during regular checkup examinations. However, research has shown that some vaccines can protect pets for longer than one year. In light of these findings, the AAHA and AAFP guidelines note that some vaccines don’t need to be repeated more frequently than every three years. The decision regarding how often your pet needs vaccine boosters depends on several factors, including your pet’s overall health status and risk for exposure to the diseases in question. Vaccination remains one of the most important services your veterinarian offers, and although vaccination is a routine procedure, it should not be taken for granted. It also allows a regular opportunity for your veterinarian to perform a physical examination, which is very important for keeping your pet healthy. Rescue Apparel Aids Animal Shelters BY STACEY BOMSER

ou’ve heard of dress to impress, but what about dress for progress? Rescue Apparel focuses on providing support for animal shelters across the country. President Michelle Elena Arevalo explains more about this athleisure line of clothing and how proceeds are helping save the lives of shelter animals.

What is Rescue Apparel? We sell cloth-

ing designed with an animal theme to raise awareness for animal shelters that need support to stop euthanization. We are different from other animal rights organizations because we have created an athleisure clothing line, of which the profits are used to support animal shelters 100 percent. How does it work? For every item purchased from the Hope clothing line, our team buys a pack of 12 cans of pet food and donates it to a shelter. What shelters do you work with? When you donate to Rescue Apparel you’re donating to multiple shelters. Our organization has a network of national and international animal shelters which care for animals and help prevent euthanization. How do you support the animal shelters? We meet

up with shelter directors to learn about what the shelter needs such as more medical supplies, grooming products, and/or moving an animal to its new forever home. We focus on raising funds for whatever they might need in order to help as many animals as we can and make sure no shelter gets left behind.

Besides selling its clothing line, how else does Rescue Apparel aid animal shelters? We create

different ways for the community to give back to animal shelters via Rescue Apparel events. We are not purely asking for donations. We also create opportunities for people to adopt animals and learn more from animal supporters at programs such as Rescue Apparel’s Howl-O-Ween event, which was held at Weston Town Center last month. We are also holding a car wash at the Exxon gas station at 20 Indian Trace to raise funds. We are planning a Painting with a Twist party on April 12th.
