Increased Risk of Heart Disease Following Breast Cancer Diagnosis Other commonly used drugs for treating breast cancer, like trastuzumab (Herceptin), can also contribute to cardiovascular problems down the road, so patients need to be aware of the risks.” In addition, radiation therapy to the chest area can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease because the treatment is administered in close proximity to the heart.

Breast cancer survival has improved over the years due to new, innovative therapies. However, some treatments may cause cardiotoxicity, or damage to your heart. This is especially true if you are at risk for heart disease. According to Thomas Samuel, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast oncologist, “A significant issue for women with breast cancer is the ‘survivorship’ period, which refers to what happens after they survive the cancer. It’s particularly important to be aware of the risk of heart disease.” Many of the therapies used, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal therapy, can impact a patient’s longterm cardiac risk. Dr. Samuel adds, “For example, some of the agents we use in chemotherapy increase future risk of heart failure. Certain chemotherapy regimens that include medications called anthracyclines can cause weakness of the heart muscle and congestive heart failure.
“Thankfully, today radiation therapy techniques are very safe and localized, and are designed to spare the heart from any significant damage,” said Dr. Samuel. Cardiotoxicity can occur in various forms, including damage to the heart muscle itself, arteries, or the heart valves. Although cardiotoxicity can be life-threatening, it can often be managed effectively with medication and minimally invasive treatments. Diego Sadler, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida cardio-oncologist said, “Fortunately, the percentage of patients affected by these treatments is relatively small and there are now sophisticated imaging modalities that allow early detection and treatment of heart disease resulting from cancer treatment for breast cancer.” Breast cancer patients who have undergone these types of treatments, but who are also at high risk for heart disease due to other conditions, are at an increased risk for cardiotoxicity. “Pre-existing factors such as hypertension, diabetes or genetic conditions affect breast cancer survivors similar to how
they affect the general population; however, having undergone certain cancer therapies may put them at an even higher risk for heart disease,” said Dr. Sadler. It is also important to know that some therapies used in the treatment of breast cancer have the potential to cause cardiac disease many years, even decades after treatment. For this reason, surveillance to allow for early detection and treatment can offer improved cardio-vascular outcomes. The relatively new specialty, cardio-oncology, focuses on the effect cancer treatments have on the heart. I
t has been a couple of weeks since those dreadful days. We saw our lights go out, the water come in (and out) and the winds blow. For the most part, however, we were ready. We closed our shutters, prepared our hurricane kits, filled our gas cans and gathered our insurance papers. Some of us evacuated, while others hunkered down and waited for whatever Mother Nature was going to bring. Our community did not come out unscathed, but mercifully the center of the storm avoided us this time. After seeing the near total devastation on the Caribbean island of Barbuda, some of us feel a bit lucky. One of the true honors of publishing this magazine is being able to tell the stories of members of our community doing incredible things. We have already heard countless selfless acts from “Hurricane Heroes” across the community. People putting the welfare of their neighbors before their own. We want to tell these stories. ourteen years ago, Mayor Rae Carole Armstrong and City Council Members approved and adopted Resolution No. 8729. The resolution authorizes the sale and issuance of the city’s series 2003 Non-Ad Valorem Tax Revenue Bonds. Approximately $2.1 million remained in the bond, which was refinanced in November of 2013. Three years ago, in 2014, The Plantation City Council gave approval to spend the $2.1 million on the new community center. The overall appearance and traditional design of the building was chosen to complement the nearby city buildings such as the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library and the Plantation Historical Museum. Additional funding sources for the new 11,000 square foot community center
include the City’s capital budget and a generous donation last year of $100,000 from the General Federation Woman’s Clubs Plantation Woman’s Club (GFWC). The charitable 501 (c) (3) club is the oldest civic organization in the City of Plantation. All club proceeds go to scholarships, education, and community improvements. The new facility designed by one of South Florida’s top 25 architect firms, Synalovski Romankik Saye, features a state-of-the-art fitness center and a large space for plenty of programs for the community to enjoy such as Zumba, gymnastics, yoga, and kickboxing. It also has three additional rooms to serve the community. These are perfect for hosting local organization meetings and clubs. A warming kitchen is also on site, so catered events can be hosted. The dedication and grand opening celebration were held in August with an official ribbon-cutting event led by Mayor Diane Veltri Bendekovic. Introductions were made by Debra Generotti, Chairperson, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and Manuel Synalovski and Merrill Romanik, AIA, Synalovski Romankik Saye. Also in attendance were City Council representatives, Peter S. Tingom, Lynn Stoner, Jerry Fadgen, Mark Hyatt, and Ron Jacobs and many community VIPs. “The opening of the new Plantation Community Center on Palm Tree Road is a wonderful addition to the public recreational facilities in the City,” says Helen Ackerman, President of the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club. “Not only does it have the traditional work-out equipment but also boasts the latest in sound and electronics. hings are heating up at the City of Plantation Fire Station #1. For six decades, the station has been serving the community in a facility not exactly suitable for such a hard-working organization. Fire Station #1 was established in 1957 to accommodate two small fire units and a few part-time volunteers. Three years later it was expanded, however, it was not built to accommodate the current full-time staff that works twentyfour hours a day, seven days a week. The Past is Present – The 2017 GFWC Antique Show is Around the Corner COMMUNITY NEWS

ince the Club’s founding in 1949, Plantation Woman’s Club has strived to serve the Plantation community as their first public service priority. More than 100 club members are preparing for the “35th Annual Antique and Vintage Show” to be held at Plantation’s Volunteer Park Auditorium on Sunrise Boulevard near the Sawgrass Mall on November 11th and 12th. The Antique-Vintage Show will also feature members dressed in outfits that represent older times. The ladies are always delighted to pose for photos as souvenirs of the event. The first show was held at Deicke Auditorium in 1984 and has continued since that time as one of the major winter fund-raising events. “This year’s show promises to be outstanding as all the vendor booths have been rented filling up the main ballroom and adjacent areas to capacity as well as the outside,” says Club President Helen Ackerman. “Glass, vintage clothing, antiques of all kinds, metalwork, bric-a-brac, and a wide variety of collectibles will be featured. A well-loved highlight of each show is the home-made food and desserts available in the food court for eat-in or take out.” The Plantation Woman’s Club is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) representing women in the United States and all over the world. Their mission is first and foremost to support the local community. Throughout the years, they have provided assistance to police, fire, and other public service sectors of the city to help make Plantation the best place to live, play, and work. The Club is noted for its annual award of four-year university scholarships, all the fountains in Plantation, donations to hundreds of charitable organizations over the years, civic improvement proj-
ects and community involvement. The members have always looked to maximize volunteer efforts to enrich the community by taking on beneficial fund-raising projects such as the selling of driver’s licenses in the 1950’s when Florida only had a limited time window for license sale and renewal. At that time, the Plantation Woman’s Club was the only club in Broward County providing that service through a storefront in Plantation. That activity, and others through the years, provided for the Club’s initial funding and ability to provide financial assistance when needed to numerous projects and causes. “Our membership diversity is the strength of the Club with women of all backgrounds and ages. The only requirement is a willingness to get involved with doing good works as well as enjoying new friendships and community service,” added Ackerman. Creating a Model Canine Citizen – Dog Smarts 101 Class COMMUNITY NEWS

lthough adorable, loyal, and loving, sometimes our furry four-legged friends need a little training. Dawn Hanna, Owner of Oh Behave ® Dog Training, is offering free seminars at the West Regional Library. The class addresses basic obedience, behavior issues, house manners, and puppy training. Dog owners who take “Dog Smarts 101” will be offered plenty of helpful advice on solving their worst doggie nightmares from chewing and pulling to bad potty etiquette. Topics covered will be those such as: furniture and shoe chewing, excessive barking, leash pulling, and accidents in the home. The purpose is to not get mad, but to get smart. The dog training programs are force free, fear free, and pain free. For over 15 years, Hanna has been training and coaching dog owners. The Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT) continually attends educational opportunities to stay current on the latest positive reinforcement training methods and scientific studies. She is also a professional member of the Pet Professional Guild (PPG) which promotes the concept of “No Pain, No Force, No Fear”. For those that are unable to attend her free seminar at the library, Hanna provides group
classes for dogs at Plantation Heritage Park for a nominal fee. The setting allows for teaching basic dog training skills such as sit, down, come, stay, and loose leash walking. The six-session course will also address problem behaviors. The enjoyable reward based program not just educates and creates model canine citizens, but creates a bonding experience as well. Private dog training is offered to owners who have behavior issues that are not compatible with a class setting. When not teaching two-legged and four-legged friends alike, Hanna enjoys volunteering at shelters, pet friendly events, low cost vaccination clinics, and providing free dog behavior resources through her DogSmarts 101 program. “I always tell people to start training as close to day one when a puppy or adult dog is adopted. Many ‘bad’ and dangerous behaviors are preventable if you work with qualified dog trainers,” says Hanna. “Dogs offer ‘bad’ behaviors because they pay off for the dog. If you want your dog to stop offering bad behaviors, you must limit the dog’s freedom so that bad behaviors no longer pay off. Teach good behaviors and reward your dog heavily for offering good behaviors.” Class is held from 6 to 7 p.m. on October 10th and November 14th at the West Regional Library, 8601 W. American Heritage Student Had an Out-of-the-World Experience

any kids over the summer enjoyed swimming, hiking, sporting activities, lounging around, and hobbies that they don’t get to participate in during the school year. However, Joshua Hoffman, a freshman at American Heritage School, spent his summer graduating from the Space Academy at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Official Visitor Center. The weeklong educational program at the renowned school promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), while training students and adults with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and problem solving. The students stayed in “Habitats”, 6 to a room while “Waste Management” (bathrooms and showers) were at the ends of the hallways. They were divided into 16-person teams, and called trainees. Each team had 2 trainers, one during the day and one at night. Joshua was part of the Space Academy program, which is designed for trainees who have an interest in space exploration. Astronauts and Space Academy graduates, who work at Boeing, gave lectures about the next generation of space travel. Classroom studies consisted of studying missions to Mars, astronomy, spacesuits, the International Space Station (ISS), and many other subjects relating to rocketry and space travel. However, the highlight was spending the week training with a team that flew a simulated space mission to Mars where they could experience the feeling of walking on the moon on a 1/6 gravity chair. They also did team building challenges such as constructing a cube underwater and designing and launching model rockets. Furthermore, the crew participated in experiments and successfully completed an extra-vehicular activity (EVA), or spacewalk, and returned to Earth in time to graduate with honors. “Attending Space Academy was a phenomenal experience because ever since I was little, I have always been fascinated with what’s outside our world,” exclaimed
Joshua. “Being in Huntsville at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and expanding my knowledge about astronomy and space travel is something that I will definitely put to good use and hopefully have a better chance of actually going to the moon or Mars one day. That’s my dream!” Space Camp operates year-round in Huntsville, Ala., and uses astronaut training techniques to engage trainees in real-world applications of STEM subjects. Trainees sleep in quarters designed to resemble the International Space Station and train in NASA-inspired simulators. More than 750,000 trainees have graduated from Space Camp since its inception in Huntsville, Alabama in 1982, including STS-131 astronaut Dottie MetcalfLindenburger, European Space Agency astronaut, Samantha Cristoforetti and NASA Expedition 48 astronaut Dr. Kate Rubins. American Heritage School Math Team Win National Championship

t was just five years ago that Dr. Radleigh Santos and Mr. Rick Rovere launched American Heritage School’s math competition team. Although the MIT graduate and veteran math teacher have worked together coaching students for over a decade, the dynamic duo recently cheered on their students as they earned the 1st place spot as “best private school in Florida in math competition”. Dr. Santos, an alumnus of American Heritage, (he was valedictorian of his graduating class), went on to graduate from MIT in 2002, earned a Master’s in Mathematics from Georgia Tech, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from FAU. “Our training program this year was the most rigorous ever, and the students were asked to be more committed to the program than ever before; the results show it worked,” said Dr. Santos. The biggest challenge for the math coaches is managing the program so that it could be successful and fun. In addition to the math team, the multi-dimensional students participate in many other extracurricular activities while maintaining a heavy course load and schedule. “I love teaching math, and I love math competition,” says Mr. Rovere, director of the American Heritage math competition team. “We built a program where students who love math have a home and can make friends with students who share the same passion for math.” In addition to training for competitions throughout the year, the students on the math team offer over 2,000 hours of free math tutoring as a service to their community.” “Math competition can be compared to a sporting event in that students have a variety of natural talents, like sports, and in the end, it is the hard work and practice that determines how far a student can go in the program,” adds Dr. Santos. “We do practice a lot.”

Approximately 700 students from the top 52 high schools in math throughout the United States traveled to Buffalo, New York to compete in the 2017 Mu Alpha Theta National Math Competition. American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida was represented by 38 students competing in the 42 individual events and 9 team events. American Heritage took 1st place in 22 events and had 8 perfect scores. After the 3-day competition, American Heritage School of Plantation finished in 1st place overall. The final math score is determined by a combination of individual achievements and teamwork–both vital for success. According to Dr. Santos, American Heritage’s win at nationals could not have happened without both great individual performances and team performances. Mr. Rovere sums it up best when he says, “The purity and relevance of math distinguishes it from other academic or non-academic disciplines. It is the most objective activity–the color of your skin, your nationality, whether you are male or female, it doesn’t matter–all you must do is get the right answer and you win.”

t was 5 years ago when Plantation resident, Tiernan Ramer, decided to start a charity project. At that time, she was just a 7th grade student at Seminole Middle School. The 12-year-old overheard a group of girls talking about their “shoe problems”. However, their “problem” was that they couldn’t stop buying them. Tiernan knew that this was no joke, it was a real problem for some children, and she was determined to help. She visited a local Broward County shoe charity “In Jacob’s Shoes”, and was saddened to hear that kids in her own community were without shoes. She then created “Tiernan’s Soles Shoe Drive” and started collecting that week. The ambitious teen ended up collecting over 100 pairs of shoes.
On her 13th birthday, she was invited to attend a back to school event as a personal shoe shopper for kids in need. After helping many wonderful families, she was assigned to help an eight-year-old girl who fell in love with the rainbow-laced boots she previously collected. “To see a pair of shoes that she collected make someone so happy was the most satisfying feeling she had ever experienced,” said her mother, Colleen Ramer. “After that her appetite for helping others was insatiable.” Fast forward to high school, and Tiernan had collected over 1,000 pairs winning her the “Mattel Top 5 Young Philanthropists” in the United States award. As a result, “In Jacob’s Shoes” received a donation of $1000 in her name. During her Sophomore year of high school, she was awarded the “Jacob S. Zweig Excellence in Service Award”, and in her Junior year the “Freedom’s Foundation National George Washington Award” for her continued efforts. Currently a senior at South Plantation High School, Tiernan has collected over 5,000 pairs to date, and has no intentions on stopping. Right now, she has about 400 pairs in her family’s garage ready for distribution. These will be transported to “In Jacob’s Shoes”. The local 501(c)(3) public charity, created in

loving memory of Jacob S. Zweig, provides shoes, backpacks, school supplies and athletic gear to South Florida children in need. “Donating shoes might sound simple but there’s so much more that goes with it. Shoes are the key to walking with confidence. Shoes also have the power to unlock opportunities some kids may never have such as playing sports, having a successful job interview, or even just going to prom,” says Tiernan. “I can confidently say that my volunteer work has not only made a difference today, but will also change tomorrow and every day following.” Whether it is law, social work or education, Tiernan is hoping to find a career path that will support her desire to help the underserved. Culpepper Journalism Foundation Celebrates 20 Years!

wo decades ago, The Culpepper Journalism Foundation (CJF) was established to promote excellence in scholastic journalism for Broward County School students. The non-profit foundation was created to provide educational and financial assistance to high school underclassmen so they can attend summer journalism programs at universities in honor of Dr. Alyce Culpepper. The retired South Plantation teacher always encouraged her students to improve their writing, photography, and editing skills at these summer programs. However, not every student could afford the luxury of doing so. Therefore, CJF was born. “I always encouraged my students to attend summer programs (which they did at their own expense) because they benefited from another teacher’s perspective. Most college media professors are or were professional journalists, and students need to practice good journalism that is based on facts and research which the summer program provides as they work hand-in-hand with the professors,” says Culpepper. “The CJF fellowships help the entire journalism class as well as the individual student who is exposed to the college experience while in high school.” In the last 20 years more than $40,000 has been given to high school sophomores and juniors to attend summer programs throughout the United States. During the early years, the Sun-Sentinel, Miami Herald and Comcast Communications provided internships and special fellowships for additional financial support to several recipients. All donations to the CJF go directly to the student fellowships students. A
Pap Test, more commonly referred to as a Pap Smear, is a screening procedure used to test for cervical cancer. The test will show the presence of precancerous cells on the cervix (the opening of the uterus), and it may also reveal changes in cervical cells that may become cancerous later. This annual exam is as important as a mammogram, and shouldn’t be missed or ignored. During the routine procedure, in your physician’s office, cells from the cervix are gently scraped away and then examined in a lab for abnormal growth. The physician does this by inserting a speculum into the vagina. This will widen the vaginal walls so the cervix can be seen. A swab will then be used to take cells from the cervix. Although, it may be mildly uncomfortable, it is relatively quick and has no long-term pain, or pain thereafter. The results usually return in a few days, and they will be negative or positive. A negative result is great, as nothing was found to alarm anyone. However, a positive result does not mean cancer is evident, but means there may be inflammation, or minor cell changes called dysplasia. These often clear up on their own, so your physician may suggest you have a repeat Pap test in a few months to follow-up and see if any changes have occurred.

The human papillomavirus (HPV), the most commonly sexually transmitted infection, is a virus that causes warts. HPV types 16 and 18 are the primary cause of cervical cancer. Those that have HPV have an increased risk for developing cervical cancer. There are screenings available to test for HPV as well. The HPV virus can be dormant for years, and then suddenly become active. Therefore, even those in a monogamous relationship should still get regular Pap smears. It is recommended that women should begin having regular Pap smears at the age of 21. ould you and your family know what to do if you awoke to the sound of the smoke alarm and the smell of smoke? In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. That’s why home escape planning is so critical in a fire situation. It ensures that everyone in the household knows how to use that small window of time wisely. “Developing and practicing a home escape plan is like building muscle memory,” said John McNamara, Acting-Fire Chief for the City of Sunrise Fire-Rescue Department. “That preplanning is what everyone will draw upon to snap into action and escape as quickly as possible in the event of a fire.” Sunrise Fire-Rescue urges residents to develop a home escape plan. A home escape plan includes working smoke alarms on every level of the home, in every bedroom, and near all sleeping areas. It also includes two ways out of every room, usually a door and a window, with a clear path to an outside meeting place (like a tree, light pole, or mailbox) that’s a safe distance from the home. Here are some additional tips for developing and practicing a home escape plan: ▸▸ Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit. ▸▸ Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out. ▸▸ Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them. ▸▸ Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find. ▸▸ Close doors behind you as you leave — this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. ▸▸ Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

ost of us are familiar with at least one use of ultrasound – those black and white first “pictures” of a baby. Ultrasound, which uses high frequency sound waves to produce images, has many more medical applications. Ultrasound is similar to the sonar that ships and submarines use to show what’s in the water around them. With medical ultrasound, a wand-like instrument called a transducer sends out waves of high frequency sound. As these sound waves pass through the body, certain structures like organs, tissues and tumors reflect the wave back. That reflection or echo is then used to create a picture of what’s ahead.
Medical uses of ultrasound
In addition to taking those early pictures of a developing baby, ultrasound has many uses including helping doctors determine the causes of pain, swelling and infection. Doctors also can use ultrasound to view organs including: • Heart and blood vessels including the flow of blood and potential narrowing of vessels • Liver • Gallbladder • Spleen• Pancreas • Kidneys • Bladder • Uterus and ovaries • Eyes • Thyroid and parathyroid glands • Scrotum Ultrasound can help doctors with a number of medical procedures such as a biopsy of a suspicious mass. A breast ultrasound may be one of the tools used to check areas found during a screening mammogram.
Preparing for an ultrasound
The preparation you’ll need for an ultrasound exam depends on the type of exam you’ll be having. In general, you should wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to remove. You may need to undress and wear a patient gown for the exam. Please leave any jewelry and valuables at home. Please ask your doctor for specific instructions about whether you should eat or drink before the exam. For some exams, you will need to have a full bladder so that we can get a better look at your abdominal organs. For others, you may need to refrain from eating and drinking for up to 12 hours before the exam.
What’s an ultrasound exam like?
Ultrasound exams are generally painless and don’t take a lot of time. If you are having a standard, diagnostic ultrasound, there are no known harmful effects. You’ll lie down on a table next to the ultrasound machine. The technologist will rub some gel on your skin around the area to be examined. Then he or she will press the transducer firmly against your body and begin moving it back and forth to produce the images needed. You may feel some minor discomfort from the pressure of the transducer. Some ultrasounds require a probe into your body in order to get a better view. A transesophageal echocardiogram is a type of ultrasound where the transducer is inserted into the esophagus in order to view the heart. Men with prostate problems may need a transrectal ultrasound that inserts a transducer into the rectum in order to view the prostate. A transvaginal ultrasound uses a transducer that is placed into a woman’s vagina in order to look at the uterus and ovaries.
